I havent finalized plans yet but I am seriously hoping to make it this year for my first time but there are a couple of things that I have to straiten out before I am 100% on going. What was the source of energy to heat them? The leading candidate is the decay of short-lived radioactive isotopes such as aluminum-26 (26Al). I thought a good source early on would be the planetoids plowing thru the magnetic fields of the proto sun? Various distances from the proto sun will induce various temps. George Zay

Re: [meteorite-list] I need help!! L, H what?
Fresh H chondrites have 9-13 volume% metal plus sulfide, L chondrites have 6-7 vol% metal plus sulfide. But notice that a perfectly respectable H chondrite with 9% only has slightly more metal+sulfide than a perfectly respectable L with 7%. It's not always easy to distinguish on this basis. The quality of the surface can also affect what you see. With that said, here is the reason I am writing: this meteorite has not been approved by the Nomenclature Committee, so it may not have been formally classified yet. A lot of provisional classifications get changed when somebody does an analysis. jeff At 05:14 PM 4/2/2004 -0700, you wrote: Hello List, I am confused! Please help me out on this! [meteorite-list] I Need Help - L, H what?
Tom asked: Hello List, I am confused! Please help me out on this! An L is low and an H is high, right? If a meteorite is chocked full of visible metal can it be an L, or is it an H ? Jeff kindly responded: Fresh H chondrites have 9-13 volume% metal plus sulfide, L chondrites have 6-7 vol% metal plus sulfide. But notice that a perfectly respectable H chondrite with 9% only has slightly more metal + sulfide than a perfectly respectable L with 7%. It's not always easy to distinguish on this basis. The quality of the surface can also affect what you see. Tom, the presence of a lot of visible metal can be a deceiving criterion. Lots of L or LL chondrites have an appreciable amount of visible nickel- iron specks or flakes, others are very poor in visible metal as some of this total iron may be locked in the silicates (olivine, pyroxene, etc.) Best wishes, Bernd __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] L, H what?
Hello Tom and List, Yes, lab testing will probably be the only sure method to classify a meteorite unambiguously. My NWA 984 (LL4) slice has lots of easily visible FeNi metal specks, my Saint-Severin (LL6) has lots of FeNi specks (large and small), my Parnallee (LL3.6) is choke-full of metallic iron. Same thing with my Tenham (L6) or my Suizhou (L6). So high iron and low iron does not primarily refer to the visible amount of nickel iron in the matrix. Table 3.3 in D.W. Sears (1978) The Nature and Origin of Meteorites (Adam Hilger Ltd, Bristol), p. 62 has some interesting details: Principal minerals in chondritic meteorites (wt%) for types 5 and 6: Olivine H = 33-37 / Pyroxene = 23-27 / Kamacite (FeNi) = 15-17 Olivine L = 45-49 / Pyroxene = 21-25 / Kamacite (FeNi) = 06-08 Olivine LL = 56-60 / Pyroxene = 14-18 / Kamacite (FeNi) = 01-02 In words: The amount of olivine increases, the amount of pyroxene decreases as you go from H = L = LL. But: The total amount of the low-nickel kamacite decreases from H = L = LL as more and more iron is oxidized that is: needed for the silicates. [meteorite-list] Putting things in perspective
Hi all, I've been on our list for several years but astronomy takes up most of my *free time*. I get the digest and try to check it at least a couple of times a week. Seems like I missed most of the bad stuff and that's probably just as well. I'm on the moderator team of a large (6000 people) yahoo group for people who take astro pics with digital cameras so I know that sometimes things can go sour. Unfortunately, some people just don't play well with others! I know most of the folks here know how to behave on a list. Whenever I get discouraged I always turn to the night sky to help me put things in perspective. Just so happens I have a beautiful Muong Nong layered tektite which always reminds me of the night sky when I look at it in just the right light. I took some pics of it today and then decided to play around a bit. Into the *night sky* shown on the polished face of the Muong Nong I placed a picture I took a few weeks ago of Comet C/2002 T7. Although there is really no direct connection between the comet and the Muong Nong they still make a nice composite image. Hope you all enjoy it. http://velatron.com/dca/ginger/muongnung_comet_t7.jpg Here is a more normal picture of the Muong Nong http://velatron.com/dca/ginger/muongnong01.jpg And here is my original picture of the comet, taken 2-16-04. http://velatron.com/dca/ginger/comet._T7_21604rework.jpg Ginger Mayfield Divide, CO - where it's snowing and foggy __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

It is a, still unclassified, CV3. can be seen on Deans website (and probably other places too) When I was studying it more closely, I got the thought that it migt be paired with NWA1807.they look very similar, bot on the inside and on the outside. Anyone have an oppinion on that ? The next is OT... but I just have to tell someone :-))) And later last night I was to a Country music show with Charlie McCoy. Charlie is an old friend, I have known him for may years. But last night he surprised me ! I was talking to one of the other artists from the show, Jett Williams. Then Charlie told me she was the daughter of Hank Williams thé greatest songwriter that have ever lived !!! WOW ..I was shaking hands and talking country music with Hank williams´s daughter ... It was a night (and day)I will never forget. Best Lars
