[meteorite-list] Moldavite question
Hi list, I saw a seller selling a Moldavite as a great channeling crystal. Aren't Moldavites a type of impactite glass, and thus lacking crystal structure (amorphous)? Also, I was checking in an old geology dictionary, and it mentions that Moldavites are a type of ozocerite (also spelled ozokerite). A mineral paraffin wax (aka mineral wax, fossil wax, earth wax native paraffin). Has anyone heard of ozocerite and know how they are (were) associated with Moldavites? Bob, I first called you at 5:53pm CST to inquire about the refund, yet you claimed that you would have to wait a few hours to send the refund via Paypal since you did not have internet access at the time, thus proving yet another blatant lie from you; your defensive and unprofessional response to my email (to the list) came through at 6:08pm CST, a time-lapse of only 15 minutes. No internet access for a few hours??? 2. Also, regarding the original transaction; as I had told you over the phone, I was unable to make the payment (in excess of $1000) due to the fact that I had not received a large payment that I had been expecting to receive from a sale that I had made. The buyer that I had made the deal with finally backed out after two nearly two months of negotiations, so please don't act like it hasn't happened to anyone other that you before, because If it didn't we wouldn't be in the situation and both of us would be happy. I told you that I was sorry for not being able to come through on the deal, but unlike others, I have more important financial priorities over collecting meteorites. 3. I understand that you had to take the extra time to relist your auctions. However, per Ebay policy, odds are you didn't loose any money as a result of this since no additional fees are charged to one's account if the unsold items sell the second time around. 4. Shame on you little boy Wow, very mature of you, Bob. At least I don't act like one. I am sorry that I had to go public with this, but I believe that it has importance so that others can avoid any similar experiences in the future. Thank you for your time. The money order to Stefan was mailed out sometime in October last year. Why wait 9 months to bring it up here on the list? There were some inquiries that I responded to approx. 4 months after the payment was sent. Unfortunately Martin and Stefan dont want to forward my email responses. I should add that Stefan is a complete gentleman, and I never accused him of being fraudulent. Martin, If you have any proof of me accusing him of being fraudulent . please share it with the list ! Of course you cant , BECAUSE I NEVER DID ! By the way Martin. If I never responded to your inquiries , how did you know I accused him of being fraudulent? Can you read my mind ? As for Ryan He requested that I cancel approx. 8 to 10 meteorite ebay auctions ( which I did ) so that he may buy the whole lot. Then he waits one week and tells me that he wants his $125.00 deposit back. This obviously put me in a jam, anyone knows that I sell material to acquire new meteorites. So , I get pissed off and take my time refunding the money. Go ahead and shoot me!! Some Dealers would have told him to go to hell for wasting their time and would never have dealt with him again. So beware of Ryan he likes to have you cancel auctions, pay a deposit and then later back out and ask for a refund. Shame on you little boy As for the other people Ive dealt with in my short time collecting, I want to say I appreciate all of the sales, trades, discussions etc. To name a few Mike Farmer, Dave Shultz, Steve Arnold Chgo., Michael Blood, Eric Olsen, Rob Wesel, Jim Schwade, Bob Cucciara, Bob Haag Ask them If I ever stiffed them on money. Paul, Thanks for that, most interesting. I had heard that it was thought to be some sort of furnace waste, the thing that bothers me about that theory, is why would you end up with Iron and Nickel in similar ratio's to meteoric iron?, if it was waste from a steel furnace surley the Iron would be a lot more pure? And maybe contain more cobalt etc - So unless it was 'made' how did the Fe/Ni ratio get to be so 'realistic'? As you say the 250 My age is interesting too, does point to the surrounding rock types in the area, being the Olivine source. [meteorite-list] Moldavite question
Mark Bowling escribe: I saw a seller selling a Moldavite as a "great channeling crystal". THAT's OK. Aren't Moldavites a type of impactite glass, YES, ACCORDING TO MANY SCIENTISTS' OPINIONS. and thus lacking crystal structure (amorphous)? BASICALLY CORRECT, THOUGH I'D BET STRESS RELATED MICROSTRUCTURES ARE USUALLY PRESENT SINCE COOLING WAS VIOLENT AND PRESSURES GREAT. Hola Mark, Your comment may unnerve a lot of believers, so let me try to come to the rescue before they are driven to wanton chocoholisticism. Today's Spanish Word of the Day: "Cristal". It most frequently translates as glass, as in, the thief broke my window's cristal (glass). So what comes easy in Spanish, we'll have to work a little harder in English. Pick up a good dictionary and see if "crystal" is limited to "oriented molecules". Nope. It has the following meaning, too: Crystal: A very high quality of glass ... Moldavites may not be crystalline at a molecular level, but they certainly aren't "Green Eggs and Ham," as Dr. Seuss wrote. Speaking of which, when the real Dr. Seuss, a crystal expert, geologist and founding father of modern paleontology brought the world the word tectite and first suggested they might be meteoritic in origin, publishing on moldavites in 1901, he chose that word because it means melted ... and being an Austrian crystal expert, I am sure he wouldn't have told the great glass blowers of Austria that they weren't producing the world's finest crystal. (Thank goodness, or they might have degenerated into severe chocoholisticitis fits.) So, then, that fine crystal on the chocoholic pusher's Rolex watch ... crystal?= yes. high purity, _CLEAR_, glass. Just like Evian's crystal clear water. And what of that crystal ball? How does it work? Mystically as the tektite, I would guess it channels energy to a receptive user. For the scientist in you ... it might be as mystically crystal clear as the amorphous crystals used on Mauna Kea, Hubble, Palomar, Cerro Pachon, Zelenchukskaya, ESO which channel energy so well, astronomers never fail to have other worldy and galactic experiences. I don't think an astronomer would trade his big glass for a high quality quartz crystal in hopes of better channeling!! Quotes by Green Eggs and Ham (T.G.) Dr. Seuss: "I like nonsense. It wakes up the brain cells." "Fantasy is a way of looking at life through the wrong end of the telescope." Dr. Franz Eduard Seuss: Biosphere and chocolate may peacefully co-exist. Gondwanaland had a plague of chocoholisticism but that couldn't sink Pangea. Plate Tectonics doesn't anything to do with melting chocolate or zitty volcanoes. [meteorite-list] Matteo War on the list
Hello, I am fairly new to this list and to meteorite collecting in general. I think a list such as this could be very beneficial to new people to the hobby of collecting and dealing in meteorites. Alot of very informative material has come through this list and I'm taking it in like a sponge. THIS IS WHY THE LIST WAS CREATED RIGHT? This endless banter regarding Matteo is ridiculous. I get emails in Italian (No Offense, Matteo, I have nothing against Italians), I waste my time deleting emails of people dogging each other repeatedly, it's such a waste of everyone time. I think Mike Farmer did a good thing by sending the initial warning. This is where it should lie! Judging from the emails I have read thusfar, it seems that [EMAIL PROTECTED] is instigating a fight here and it has to stop. For those who are unaware, Please review the following: General List Policies 1. Posts need to relate -in some way- to meteorites - Current Emails are not longer reflecting this 2. Be courteous and professional at all times - Right, SureNOT 3. Do not post -private messages- or -personal attacks- to the list - Not happening here 4. Please include the 'subject' of the post in the subject box 5. Send emails in text format, not -HTML- 6. Do not send emails with -file attachments- to the list - include a file link - Not happening here 7. Make sure you can back up statements with -facts and references- - Again Not happening here 8. Do not post -major advertisement- emails to the list - include a 'sale' link 9. If you are posting a URL for a sale, include 'SALE' in the subject box Ok, So could we all please just put the stick down (That means, Stop the fight, Matteo) and move on to why we are here in the first place. Re: [meteorite-list] Shirokovsky
G'day Frederic, The official position of the Nomenclature Committee is stated in their Shirokovsky statement below. http://meteoriticalsociety.org/bulletin/shirokovsky.pdf Cheers, Jeff KuykenI.M.C.A. #3085www.meteorites.com.au Shirokovsky pallasite, special statement. Specimens of an object known as the Shirokovsky pallasite, recently acquired by a variety of public and private collections, are probably not meteorites. The petrology and geochemistry of this object strongly suggest that it has a terrestrial origin. Below is an account of the 1956 bolide that may have produced meteorites (still undiscovered), followed by a description of the probable pseudometeorite. At 03:30 UT on 1956 Feb 1, a fireball shining brighter than the sun and leaving a smoke trail was observed by numerous eyewitnesses in an area of about 500 km2 across Russia. The fireball disappeared in 5-6 seconds but the trail was visible for an hour. Windows in nearby villages were broken by the shock wave. A meteorite reportedly fell on the frozen Shirokovsky reservoir (58°48'N, 57°57'E), situated on the Kosva River near Shirokovsky village and the cities of Ugle-Uralsk and Kizel, Producing a 42-cm diameter hole in 80-cm thick ice. Magnetic particles enriched in Ni were extracted from the ice surrounding the hole. Several attempts by divers to recover the meteorite on the bottom were not successful. In early 2002, anonymous searchers found many fragments, totaling ~150 kg, of iron-rich material at the site. Mineralogy and petrography (M. A. Nazarov, Vernadsky Inst., L. A. Taylor, University of Tennessee): The material is breccia-textured, with angular silicate clasts in a metal-rich matrix. Clasts consist mainly of olivine fragments up to 1 cm (Fa3-39, avg = Fa12, CaO up to 1 wt%, NiO up to 0.3 wt%, Fe/Mn = 8-34 at., avg = 21) and rare diopside grains (Fs3-19Wo43-50). Olivine contains small inclusions of diopside, roedderite (?), Mg-rich wustite and magnesioferrite. There is no reaction zone between olivine fragments and the metallic matrix, however diopside has reacted with the matrix to produce unknown Ca,Fe,Mg-rich phases, larnite and merwinite. The matrix is metal-wustite eutectic containing minor Ca-rich fayalite. The metal contains 20-47 wt% Ni (avg = 26.5) and 0.8-2.2 wt% Co (avg = 1.3). Phosphorus and Cu were not detected. Sulfides, phosphides, phosphates, chromite, and Al-bearing phases were not found. Superficially, the mineralogy resembles that of pallasites, and the Fa number and Fe/Mn ratio of the olivine are comparable to those of pallasite olivines. However the high Ni of the olivine is distinct from that in all metal-rich meteorites. The metal-wustite eutectic has never been documented in meteorites. Accessory minerals are atypical of meteorites, and accessory phases typical of stony-iron meteorites are absent. Olivine chemistry (Fa, Fe/Mn, CaO, NiO) resembles that in some terrestrial carbonatites. Olivine was not equilibrated with the matrix melt, which crystallized quickly under highly oxidizing conditions. Mineralogy and petrography (T. Bunch and J. Wittke, Northern Arizona Univ.): contains subequal proportions of fragmental olivine and metal-rich matrix. Olivine cores average Fa11.4, rims Fa17, and have lower Fe/Mn than pallasites. Olivine has inclusions of ferroan magnesioferrite (5-80 µm), magnesiowustite (Mg0.7Fe0.3), and an alkali-rich Ca phosphate (30 µm). Metal composition (wt%), Ni = 23.6, Co = 1.8, Mn = 0.12, Ti = 0.11, Cr = 0.25. Metal contains vermicular inclusions of magnesian magnetite (4-8 vol%), magnesian kirschteinite (4-8 vol%), and rare chromite, plagioclase (An89), and olivine (Fa41). Instrumental neutron activation analysis (M.A. Nazarov and G.M. Kolesov, Vernadsky Inst.): Composition of metal-wustite eutectic, Ni =14 wt%, Co = 1.03 wt%, Au = 540 ppb, Ag = 2700 ppb, Pt = 339 ppb, Os = 3.8 ppb, Ir = 4.3 ppb, and Ru = 40 ppb. The Ni and Co contents are similar to those in some pallasites. The Au, Ir and Os concentrations are all significantly lower than those in pallasites. Pt/Ir is 40× the solar ratio, similar to that of Cu-Ni ore deposits. Oxygen isotopes (D. Rumble III, Carnegie Inst. Wash.): Olivine of the Shirokovsky specimen is on the terrestrial oxygen isotope fractionation line, 17O = +2.44, 18O = +4.63, 17 = +0.002. Noble gases (Yu. A. Shukolyukov and L. Schultz, Max-Plank Inst.): olivine has 20Ne/22Ne = 7.4 and 21Ne/22Ne = 0.038, close to the ratios of planetary gas. No cosmic component was found in He, Ne, or Ar isotopic compositions. This suggests that the specimen has never been in space, it came from the interior of a large meteoroid, or it had a very short cosmic exposure history. The small size of the hole in the reservoir ice and the lack of other meteorite fragments indicate that the pre-atmospheric mass was on the order of 1 m in diameter, too small to lack cosmic noble gases. (Stuart Perry to Harvey Nininger letter, Perry's File copy) June 24, 1954 Dear Harvey: We are all settled here, at last, and it is no small job to get everything organized and in place. I will take the 150 grams of Horse Creek at $450, and please send it to Henderson, explaining to him that it is for me. I think that is the safest way, for it is too valuable to be lying around either here or at Adrian in my absence. As soon as it is received at Washington I will mail you the check. We had a miserable week at Adrian just before we went --90 to 93 every day for seven days, and humidity around 70 or 80. With all the work of packing and getting the house ready for the summer, it was pretty trying. But when we arrived at Boston it was actually chilly -- 60 by day and 50 or less at night, and it remained that way the three days we were there. We got out of town just in time, for a day or two after we got here Boston was up to 93. With best regards, Sincerely, (Stuart Perry - name is missing as this is the file copy. The mass split along what seems to have been a reichenbach lamella which accounts fro the almost plane surface bearing some traces for the crystalline pattern. Your piece is the best of the fall and parting with it is a little like losing the lobe off one of my ears; but I guess a man can't have everything and we must pay out bills. [meteorite-list] Mars Rovers Might Get Further Lifeline
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3872975.stm Rovers might get further lifeline By Paul Rincon BBC News July 7, 2004 Negotiations are underway to further extend the missions of the US space agency's Mars Exploration Rovers. The rover team wants the robots to keep on with their science operations for longer than the 250 Martian days (or sols) they are expected to work. Representatives from the team are making the science case to Nasa officials in order to secure funding for the mission beyond September. The robotic explorers were originally due to work for just 90 Martian days. We've literally and figuratively just scratched the surface of the Columbia Hills and we're about halfway through the Endurance mission Dr Ray Arvidson, Nasa In April, scientists and engineers based at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) announced that this period would be extended to 250 sols due to the robots' better than expected performance in Mars' harsh environment. BBC News Online understands that rover project manager Jim Erickson and JPL's director of Solar System exploration, Firouz Naderi, are in talks with Nasa's associate administrator, Ed Weiler, to extend the mission still further. Dr Ray Arvidson, deputy principal investigator for the rover science payload, explained there might be significant discoveries waiting to be made on the planet. We've literally and figuratively just scratched the surface of the Columbia Hills and we're about halfway through the Endurance mission, he said. Convincing arguments Dr Arvidson said July was the last full month the rover team would be based at JPL. After that, mission scientists will use teleconferencing and distributed processing of data to carry the mission forward. This would also help to make the mission more cost-effective, said Dr Arvidson: [Money] is a huge factor. We have to minimise the costs as much as possible. Erickson and Naderi will also have to prove that the rovers are healthy enough to carry on past September. Dr Arvidson said both Opportunity and Spirit were in excellent shape, although the time available for rover operations had been gradually diminishing. This is largely due to the northern movement of the Sun as viewed from Mars in the lead-up to winter on the planet. This means days are shorter for the rovers and the Sun less intense, limiting the energy available through their solar panels to charge batteries. The steady accumulation of dust on the rovers' solar panels will eventually cut the power that can be drawn from the Sun. But this was not currently proving a significant hindrance to the mission, Dr Arvidson said. In about 30 sols' time, scientists will position the rovers' solar panels in order to soak up as much of the Sun's energy as possible to help push the vehicles through the Martian winter. Spirit will be placed in a deep-sleep mode during the night, which involves shutting down all electronics and relying on solar power to wake the rovers up. Opportunity has already been in this mode due to a faulty heater that was sapping power. We're not going to do a lot but stay alive and occasionally do some remote-sensing of the sky and surface. We'll become a long-term weather station, said Dr Arvidson. The rovers might begin driving again by early 2005, when conditions improve on the planet. If Nasa headquarters agrees to an extension, it is possible the rovers could still be roving well past their first anniversary on the Red Planet. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rover Update - July 7, 2004
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Opportunity Tests its Mettle on Slopes of 'Endurance Crater' - sol 154-158, July 07, 2004 Sol 154 consisted of Opportunity completing activities on the target Kettlestone, including a long Mössbauer integration, some microscopic images and placement of the arm for a little early morning alpha particle X-ray spectrometer integration to occur on the morning of Sol 155. The rover then went to sleep. Sol 155 began with an early morning Mars Odyssey UHF relay of about 60 megabits of data, followed by a completion of the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer integration on Kettlestone. The rover then performed a calibration activity with the arm, consisiting of moving the arm into about 20 different poses and imaging each pose with the front hazard-avoidance cameras. From the stereo images and the reported position of the arm, the rover team will be able to update models and better target the instruments onto surface features in the future. Some miniature thermal emission spectrometer activity was conducted midday, and then the rover drove backwards about 1 meter (3.3 feet). The drive backwards served two purposes: first, it positioned the rover to image the most recent rock abrasion tool holes with the panoramic camera and miniature thermal emission spectrometer; secondly, it gave the team an opportunity to evaluate driving back up over the curb that was considered so difficult before traversing on sol 150. The drive back up over the curb went very well. Slip was estimated at around 11 percent, admirable for such a traverse. On sol 156, due to an incorrect time conversion, the rover team failed to get the intended command load to the spacecraft at the right time. As a result, the spacecraft executed a backup set of minimal activities and returned about 80 megabits of data through Odyssey in the afternoon. On sol 157 the rover acquired some images of the rock abrasion tool holes from previous sols. Then it drove down the hill to approach the next target. It drove beautifully and achieved its goal location. However, due to the large slopes (final rover tilt was 28.6 degrees), Opportunity ended the drive with the right rear wheel apparently slightly above the terrain (not touching anything). Even in this state the rover appears to be stable, but the team will likely take action on the next sol to get the suspension squared up (six wheels touching) before proceeding with preparations to grind with the rock abrasion tool again. On the night of sol 157 to 158 the rover gave up deep sleep in order to preserve an exceptional morning Odyssey pass. The very early morning of sol 158, the rover woke up to chat with the Odyssey spacecraft and returned over 100 megabits of data! The rover then started the day's activities early with an attempt to image clouds around 8:30 in the morning. It then went back to sleep until about 10:30. After the morning uplink, it acquired some microscopic images of the new target area, then stowed its arm to allow a small mobility maneuver to get all six wheels squarely planted on the ground. This seemed to go as planned and reduced the total tilt of the vehicle to only 26.4 degrees, but did not appreciably change its position. http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/print.cfm?story=72693ran=177313 Cape Charles embraces its crater history By DIANE TENNANT The Virginian-Pilot July 7, 2004 CAPE CHARLES - From outer space, it's impossible to see the educational sign at the corner of Bay and Mason. But from the Victorian heart of town, the opposite is true. The extraterrestrial is in plain view, right there on the sign. Go just beyond the hump, as the railroad overpass is known, and it's under foot. Scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey and other agencies dug recently into the Chesapeake Bay impact crater, which was gouged out by an object from space 35 million years ago. They found a wealth of information in the rocks but something less tangible, too - a warm welcome in town. Cape Charles, from the tourist marker to a proposed museum/research center to a hotel bar named Ground Zero, has embraced its ancient history as a tourist attraction. It's a match made, literally, in the heavens. Wright Horton is a mountain man. His specialty at the USGS is the Appalachians, but the 2,900-foot hole drilled into the crater was expected to penetrate beyond coastal-plain sediments to the ancient bedrock from which the mountains climbed. This is the last frontier for Appalachian geology, Horton said, the part that's buried under the Atlantic coastal plain and the continental margin. Coreholes drilled over the past several years have sampled the outer parts of the 56-mile-wide crater. The Cape Charles hole was near the crater's central peak. We're pretty sure we see something that looks like impact melt, said Ward Sanford, one of the principal investigators on the drilling. That's like finding the holy grail. They do not expect to find actual pieces of the object that made the crater, but minerals can give clues to what it was - an asteroid, a comet or a meteor. Examining the rocks may take several months. One type of chemical analysis involves irradiating samples in a nuclear reactor, then waiting six months before looking at them. We're still trying to figure out what we have, Horton said. Some people describe this as one of the best preserved craters in the world. The downside of that is that there are no surface outcrops. Most of the crater is deep under the Chesapeake Bay, but it also underlies part of the Eastern Shore, the Middle Peninsula and Hampton Roads. The drill ran day and night for several weeks, lubricated by drilling mud that poured into the hole and was pumped back out. Scientists had to sit by the drain pipe and sift the mud for rock and fossils. I was on the night shift, 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., Horton said. I don't know whether 12 hours sitting by a horizontal pipe catching mud sounds exciting to you, but it actually did get kind of exciting as we got deeper and started seeing things we hadn't seen before. Dave Daniels does gravity. While gravity may seem constant, it is not. A person standing on the top of Pikes Peak would weigh slightly less than the same person standing at sea level, Daniels said. Dense rock has more gravity than shattered rock. The crater is filled with rocks that were blown out during impact and then fell or washed back in. A high gravity point seems to indicate the crater's central peak. More mysterious are two other points of high gravity, which could mean lesser peaks, which could mean the object that made the crater broke apart before impact and actually hit separately. Magnetic readings also are helping scientists map the shape of the crater more accurately for studying groundwater and future drilling. Deep rocks were magnetized during the impact, but in a slightly different orientation to Earth's current magnetic field. The work is in progress, Daniels said. Somewhere below Cape Charles is this central peak that everybody is sure is there and the gravity and the magnetics seem to indicate it is there, but are we going to see that in those samples we brought back? I don?t know the answer to that. Sanford himself is after water. The main purpose of the drilling was to create a well where samples could be taken at different depths. The state Department of Environmental Quality is charged with regulating groundwater use, but it doesn't have a clear picture of what the water is like inside the crater or how much is there. Much of the Eastern Shore lies over the crater, and new houses are going up every day. So far, the well has yielded water with 47 parts of salt per thousand parts of water. Seawater has only 35. But the well also produced water with only 10 parts per thousand. It is unusual, Sanford said, to find fresh water so close to brine. It could mean that water moves more easily through the crater fill than once thought. Sanford also will look for helium. Helium-3 is found in certain types of asteroids, and high amounts of helium-4 would indicate that water had remained in place for a long time. Pictured are core samples from the Chesapeake Bay impact crater that were

Greetings I'm rather intrigued with Shirokovsky. In looking at the pictures, a couple of things jump out - first off, most of the pieces are shaped like loaves of bread, or like ingots. Secondly, the comment that the olivines did not equilibrate with the metal matrix, but rather cooled quickly in a strongly oxidizing environment is interesting. An oxidizing environment such as ...air?? As in, someone melted some Ni-Fe, added crushed olivines, then sand-cast the resulting melt into fine sand pre-forms roughly pounded out to look like meteorites. The cooling time would be a matter of minutes. A little wire wheel action with a mild acid bath encore to clean it up, and voila - a pallasite. In some ways I find this more interesting than an actual pallasite, and I'd like to get my mitts on a piece. Anyone have any to sell? Cheap? (I'm a stingy bastard) There are problems with that scenario, among them - are there any iron meteorites with almost 30% nickel? I went looking for matches beween Shiro. and other irons like Nantan for a source of metal but came up empty. Also - is it common for meteorite finders to ask to remain anonymous? ...like the anonymous finder who discovered Shirokovsky? Cheers, MDF -- Marc D. Hello All, Thank you for all of the help that many of you have offered me since I asked the other day. I'm sure that over time I will become much more knowledgable as I get to know the hobby better; with your help of course. Thank you. Allan Lang, if you are out there, please get back to me about your offer you e-mailed me about the other day. Thank you. Best to all, Kirk.. Re: [meteorite-list] Moldavite question Ozocerite
Yes as to the glass and amorphous nature of moldavites. The New Agers aren't concerned with technical accuracy. I have some ozocerite (aka Olefinite(?)) that the late Darryl Futrell gave me. I believe some early naturalist thought tektites reported that they were hardened wax or prehistoric slag and the story can still be found. Ozocerite isn't considered a valid mineral species any longer owing to its petroleum hydrocarbon nature and chemical variation. It has been discussed on the list in ages past I think. However to my knowledge today, there is no connection between either. :http://www.mindat.org/min-7529.html Ozocerite has been found in Arizona, Utah, The Netherlands and France. It has a crystal form but is usually found in stalagmitic form. I believe it also found in coal mines occassionally. Its origin is uncertain but probably was left over when high grade crude petroleum evaporated. It is essentially natural paraffin wax as you saidMEtlist. Elton minador wrote: Hi list, I saw a seller selling a Moldavite as a great channeling crystal. Marc D. Fries wrote: I'm rather intrigued with Shirokovsky. Yes, I agree, it is an interesting X-File type of object. I might track down some metallurgists, whom I know, to see what they have to say. Also, my Russian wife can translate into and type letters in Russian on my Russified Mac, if needed. In looking at the pictures, a couple of things jump out - first off, most of the pieces are shaped like loaves of bread, or like ingots. In terms of being ...then sand-cast the resulting melt into fine sand pre-forms roughly pounded out to look like meteorites., they seem to be too ingot-like to have been made as deliberate fakes formed to look like meteorites. To me, the ingot-like forms suggest some sort of industrial by-product, not something shaped to deceive. My (naive?) impression is that we are dealing with self-delusion on a massive scale instead of fraud. That the olivines are of a type associated with Ni-Cu ores and of the approximate age of Ni-Cu ores associated such deposits suggests to me that whatever created the Shirokovsky material might have something to do with the smelting of such ores. The local Ural olivines are far too old and not associated with Ni-Cu ores from what I can tell and, thus can't be their source. If Shirokovsky was made simply as a fake, the people involved logically wouldn't have ignored local olivines,in favor of more distance olivines associated with the Ni-Cu ores. (Also, it doesn't look like it has been underwater for 44 years. (Of course the water is cold, but still there should be some obvious corrosion.) Secondly, the comment that the olivines did not equilibrate with the metal matrix, but rather cooled quickly in a strongly oxidizing environment is interesting. An oxidizing environment such as ...air?? This is a devasating argument. Quick cooling in an oxidizing environment certainly puts the stake in heart, as if it was needed, of the meteorite interpretation. Also, I get the feeling that the promoters of it make much of a nonexistent connection between the hole in the ice and what was found on the bottom of the reservoir. Given that the fall happened in 1956, how do they know exactly where to search in 2002 some 44 years later? Are there any records of someone determining the location of the hole in 1956 with a survey before the ice melted? It would be interesting to find out what sort boat and barge traffic uses the Kosva River near Shirokovsky. If there is any sort of commercial or industrial traffic, there is almost an unlimited variety of stuff that could get dumped into the reservoir. I suspect the promoters of this material as a meteorite likely don't realize that all sorts of really weird stuff gets dumped into reservoirs. Yours, Paul Baton Rouge, LA __ Do you Yahoo!? [meteorite-list] Just observed bright meteor (fireball?) outside Tucson!
Hello List, About 7:45 (~3:45 GMT) I witnessed a bright meteor bearing ~270 degrees at an altitude of ~70° down to ~45°. I can't estimate a brightness, but the sun had been down ~20 minutes and the sky was still fairly bright blue. About 10 minutes later I thought to look at Jupiter, and it was much brighter than Jupiter. The meteor was a brilliant white/blue and I could see a few pieces come off, but nothing major. This whole event took ~3 to occur. Did it most likely burn up at high altitude? Would this be called a fireball since it was very bright? Is there somewhere I should report this? I was pretty excited at the time and was trying to point it out to my dad. Certainly others in the Tucson area saw this, especially since it was in the area close to Jupiter. Any other sky observers out there who saw this? Any feedback will be appreciated.
