Hi, Michael,

I didn't mean to be PRO or CON on the hot or cold question. I offered no
judgement. I am inclined to the SOMETIMES HOT school myself.
I only meant to demostrate a pecularity of the way in which human perception
and conception interact so strongly and the difficulty it poses for evaluating
witness reports from the past..

The answer to that is no.

My example is lightning. If I ask you What color is lightning? I will
get a variety of answers based on your perceptions of lightning AND your
knowledge of it. Most will say white. Many will add to it, blue-white.
There will be few others, about 5%, the most naive and uneducated observers,
who will add a tinge of red, orange, yellow, usually with an -ish tacked

The actual color of lightning is white, of course, since the central
core plasma of a bolt is at a temperature between a minimum of 20,000 and
usually closer to 30,000 degrees Kelvin.

Many years ago (long before Google), I did an exhaustive search (months)
of all the historic literature of the world, every language, every culture
(available in translation) for descriptions of the color of lightning.
English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Russian, etc., medieval and
modern up to 1800 AD. The Greeks and Romans, Egyptians, Mesopotamian, Hindu,
Chinese, everybody! (I just want to impress you with the thoroughness of the
  search.)

I was able to find 974 descriptions of lightning color, some from every
time period and literature searched. I probably could have found thousands,
but since the results were conclusive, I quit the increasingly difficult
task. Absolutely, without any doubt, before the year 1800 AD, all lightning
on the planet Earth was RED in color, or red-orange, or bloody or other
descriptive terms clearly derived from the color red.

Obviously, some major change in the physical character of electricity or
the nature of the planet's atmosphere had occurred, hadn't it? Between 1790
and 1900, lightning changed color from RED to WHITE or blue-white. There's
  no doubt about it.

What happened? Well, before 1800 AD, everybody knew that lightning was
fire. By 1900 AD, everybody knew that lightning was electricity.
That's all. Before 1800 AD, there was no electricity, so how could we know
waht color lightning was? Fire is red; electricity is white or blue-white in
  discharge. Ah, now we know!

Human perception is not influenced by human conception or
pre-convictions, it is totally OVERWHELMED by it. Human beings only see what
they BELIEVE they are seeing. They pay no attention at all to what is
actually there or to the data presented to their senses, correcting
obvious errors on the fly before the perception even reaches
  consciousness.

Meteorites? Flamin' Fireballs, Batman! Burning, blinding, fiery bolides!
Yada yada. Of course, meteorites are hot! It's surprising they're not
molten, like the standard Hollywood B-movie of the 1950's, with its glowing
craters. John Carradine as The Professor says gravely and deep-voiced,
We'll have to wait until the meteorite cools. It's OBVIOUS that meteorites
  are hot, so they are...

Sarcasm aside, it's to be expected that there would be many reports of
hot or at least warm meteorites. Warm is probably a compromise made between
the knowledge that they are hot and the strange fact that you can't feel
  any heat!

Peanut, Frank all,
$ wires are common - especially in conducting international
business, and yes, your account and routing number is at the bottom
of every check you write and a wealth of info is passed on every time
you use a credit card or debit card. On top of that, people are stealing
mail at an alarming rate and a credit card outfit reported 41 MILLION
Identities and misc. information were stolen in the last 2 weeks.
The FBI reports it takes an average of 600 hours and 40 LBs of
paperwork by an ID Theft vicime to restore a stolen
identity to its original state.
If people are concerned about ID theft, fraud, etc, they should get
the only ID Theft protection that guarantees reconstruction
as well as total protection (US Canada, only).
It's very cheap and it is iron clad.

[meteorite-list] Attn: Meteorite Dealers

2005-07-24 Thread MeteorHntr
Hello Dealers,

I am excited to announce my new webiste for meteorite buyers at
www.FindMeteorites.com.

This site is dedicated to providing the collector a place to go to quickly find
which dealers are selling which specimens.

Basically, it is a big online classified ad website. Sellers (and buyers) can
purchase ad space under the appropriate meteorite name if they have it in
stock. So when the buying customers start to shop, they know if you have what
they want.

Sharing the concept with just a few sellers, I already have verbal commitments
from the following people that they are going to participate:

Blaine Reed
Michael Blood
Kevin Kichinka
Adam Hupe
Roman Jirasek
John Schooler

While these guys are writing up their ads to submit, others dealers have shown
interest by asking some good questions. I have tried to price this so it is a
very good deal, to encourage maximum participation from the different dealers.

The goal is to get as many sellers as possible to list their inventories so
that the site will be a great source for buyers to find exactly what they need
- quickly.

If you are a seller, what better place to expose what you have to offer?

If you would be interested in advertising, I am offering a special 40% off rate
if you place your ads by August 1st. Details are found on the Contact Us -
Rates page.

Most feel that the top spots in ANY advertising are the premium locations to
have (which is why Google and ebay sell them for a premium price). Instead of
selling those spots, they will be filled on a first come first served basis at
no extra charge. So decide if you want to target these customers, and if so,
get your order in ASAP.

While the site is just a skeleton site right now, it will be filling up very
quickly. You can visit the A - G Meteorites page at the site to see an
example of what the ads could look like under ALLENDE.

If you are a collector, I invite you to visit the site and bookmark it now, so
that you can use the source from now on. Come back often and see how we grow.

Email or call with questions.

Collector's Corner: Meteorites
By Zander Kaufman

July 24, 2005

You were told as a kid that money doesn't grow on trees, but it can fall out of
the sky from time to
time. The pastime of collecting meteorite has grown in popularity over the past
couple of years due
to several movies and a growing interest in the space sciences.

Today it is easier then ever before to start a meteorite collection of your
own. Everyday, earth is
bombarded by thousands of pounds of space junk, most of it being the size of a
grain of sand, wich
is what you see as shooting stars on clear nights. But every now and then a
piece the size of your
fist or bigger makes its way through the earth's unforgiving atmosphere.

If you don't have the time to go searching through strewn fields (meteor impact
locations) for
meteorites, you can find great deals online on auction sites like eBay. Prices
range from a dollar
to well over $5,000 for the very rare.

General cataloged meteorites sell for an average price point of a dollar a
gram. The price rises or
falls after you factor in the meteorite's historic value and composition. A
specimen that was part
of the asteroid that made the meteor crater outside of Winslow, Arizona might
bring a higher price
than one of the same size and composition found in another location.

For the first-time collector, I would recommend buying small samples to start
your collection. Start
with basic iron and stony iron meteorites. These are the least expensive and
easiest to find online.
By doing this you will have a better idea of the market, and you will be able
to figure out what
type of meteorite you want to collect.

It is also a must to buy only from sellers with established feedback for
selling good quality
meteorites. Meteorites are not easy to fake, and most of the fakes are merely
misidentified, so be
on the lookout and do your research.

You might find some sellers who claim they are members of a meteorite
collecting organization or
society. This is in no way a badge of honor. Unless they have good feedback for
selling real
meteorites as advertised, I would be cautious if you are not a seasoned
collector.

Identification
There are some basic ways to identify a true meteorite.

The object is attracted to a magnet--proof of Iron present.

Unless the specimen has been sliced, it should exhibit a thin, dark layer. This
is called fusion
crust, caused by the object entering the atmosphere.

If the specimen is a single whole piece, it should exhibit an aerodynamic
shape, also caused by the
entry into our atmosphere. This is the same of shape you would get if you where
to hold an ice cube
under rushing hot water.

Even with these basic principles, it's still possible to misidentify a sample.
Especially with
online auctions where you are unable hold the sample in your hand. I know for a
fact that I have
bought misidentified meteorites, which are known as meteor-wrongs.

This is another reason to start out small with your collection. By buying good
quality pieces, you
will start to learn the language. Iron, Stony iron, impact glass, and Slag are
some terms that might
confuse the new collector. There are books out there that will explain in great
detail everything
there is to know about meteors and meteorite collecting. High on that list is
O. Richard Norton's
Rocks from Space. This book is a must. Considered by many, including myself,
to be the meteorite
collectors' bible.

Collecting meteorites is a much bigger field then most people realize. The love
and enjoyment of
collecting meteorites is almost universal. Even if someone has never seen a
meteorite up close or
held one in their hand, it always brings awe and a few wonders. And that is not
a bad thing to
collect.
