Re: [meteorite-list] Poll
Hi Raz all, That is an example of why there are no longer any scientific laws - ie, at the sub-atomic level there are particles that go backwards in time. (of course, there are not any real particles as there is no such thing as solid matter, only dense vibrations HOWEVER, except at the most semantically literal level, all objects, barring wind resistance fall at the same rate, regardless of weight. But, technically, you may well be correct. It is one of the greatest things about reality - it is always relative! (not to mention ironic, paradoxical and hysterically funny!) [meteorite-list] RE: Gravity poll
Hi All, The majority of people who have stated that the two spheres will arrive at the same time are mistaken. The 10-kg sphere will definitely arrive first, if only by milliseconds. Now if you had dropped the spheres on the Moon, the majority answer would be correct. But wind resistance on earth after 100 meters of freefall cannot be discounted, and the ballistic coefficient of the denser object is going to come into play. --Rob -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Razvan Andrei Cc: meteor list Sent: 8/21/2005 12:36 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Poll But, the question was defined, stating spheres of specific weight, in a classic physics example. I'm wondering whether everyone has jumped to a wrong conclusion at to what is the correct answer. In a vacuum all bodies will be accelerated by gravity at the same rate. However the question was if ON EARTH! (emphasis added) 2 spheres of different weight are dropped. Since the heavier sphere has a smaller surface to volume ratio it will be slowed less by air friction and will land first. The difference in time over 100 meters will be VERY small, but it will be there none the less. Re: [meteorite-list] RE: Gravity poll
I took the only true answer... you never know As the question doesn't contain the necessary information to decide the outcome of this experiment. The question was : Two same shape spheres (1kg and 10kg) dropped from 100m. Which one will reach the Earth's surface faster? It's the same shape spheres that is the problem. If the shape is the same (spherical) it doesn't say anything about size. So drag could be an issue if the size is not the right to compensate. So depending on the relative size it could be any of the spheres that reach the ground first. Nowhere in the question is there any referenses to the density of the spheres. Even if the size is equal this could make the experiment fail. If the density is less than the surrounding air neither sphere will reach the ground. I rest my case. :-) It reminds me of the story of how to measure the height of a building with a barometer. http://www.xs4all.nl/~jcdverha/scijokes/2_12.html#subindex Nittpickingly yours, Göran Matson, Robert wrote: Hi All, The majority of people who have stated that the two spheres will arrive at the same time are mistaken. RE: [meteorite-list] RE: Gravity poll
Hi Goran, I took the only true answer... you never know There are actually two possible correct answers, depending on how much credit you give to the questioner. The key, as you point out, is the interpretation of the phrase same shape spheres. Did the questioner realize the redundant nature of the phrase (a sphere's a sphere!), or did he mean for the extra words to be interpreted as same size or same radius? If the latter, then I'm right. If the former, then you are. Bottom line is that the question was oddly/poorly worded. You wrote: Even if the size is equal this could make the experiment fail. If the density is less than the surrounding air neither sphere will reach the ground. True -- but then we are making additional assumptions about the interpretation of 1 kg and 10 kg. Are we talking mass or weight? If mass, then you are correct. Although he does say the spheres are dropped rather than released, implying that the densities of the spheres are greater than that of air. --Rob __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hello Robert, Goran, Michael, Sergey and all others: The two spheres would hit the ground at the same time only if air resistance or another resistance (large bird maybe)doesn't interfere with the spheres. The law stands true if the two spheres are released at exactly the same time and in a space devoid of air (a vacuum). If this were the case they would reach terra firma at the same instant.
