Marlin Cilz told me he has not cut a more beautful iron. What do the list

the large emerald green crystals are? Pyroxene? Every slice seems to have one
 or two of
them. The silicated and etch pattern in the silicated area reminds me a lot
 of Steinbach.

Beautiful crystals, they are! Yes, I think they are pyroxene crystals
 (augite), probably
diopside [CaMgSi2O6]. Diopside has been found in these irons: Caddo County,
 Four Corners,
Ocotillo, and Udei Station. The most interesting of these with regard to
 Mike's iron is
probably Four Corners because of its polycrystallinity, its silicate-graphite
 inclusions,
its Neumann bands. Four Corners is anomalous and Mike's iron will surely be
 classified
 as an anomalous iron, too!

 Congratulations!

[meteorite-list] My new web site, for and about meteorite hunters.

2006-10-28 Thread Ruben Garcia
Hi all,
My new web site just went on line. I'm not selling
anything, it is merely a collection of pictures and
stories relating to meteorites and meteorite hunting.

I feel blessed to have spent time in the field with
some of the worlds best meteorite hunters that swing a
metal detector, as well as some that hunt only by
sight.

There are still quite a few ( Bob Verish, Rob Matson
and Jason Utas, etc...) that I haven't hunted with
that I'd love to learn from.

It is a work in progress and some stories are not up
yet. Over the next few months more will appear.

Check it out at http://www.mr-meteorite.com

[meteorite-list] park forest outing

2006-10-28 Thread steve arnold
Well I am back home from park forest. It seems no one
wanted to show up.That is to bad.It was great for
hunting, even with the 40 mile an hour winds.I was
really lucky to find 2 more pieces.I found a 0.4 gram
fragment with a little end of crust,60% weathered and
a 3.2 gram individual with alot of weathering. It kinds
pisses me off when people are going to be there, but do
not show up.Oh well I am sure something came up.But
there loss my gain. The pieces I found were by the pool
on orchard street.I brought my handy dandy magnetic
rake and they were scooped up.That is the same area I
found small fragments 3 years ago. When I get time I
will post some pics.Along day driving and I am
bushed. Thanks to some of the people for giving me some
info on the ghubara. It was fun,but I know there still
are bigger pieces left,SOMEWHERE.Ya just gotta find
them.

[meteorite-list] Canyon Diablo Spheroid Size

2006-10-28 Thread Dave Carothers
Good evening list members,

I have specimens of the famous Canyon Diablo spheroids with a copy of the
American Meteorite Laboratory label. I don't have the capability to measure
the spheroids, but they are of the size that would qualify them as a Bessey
Speck. The label specifies Size 24.

I know that the spheroids were typically from 0.01mm to 2 mm in size. Does
anyone know the scale Nininger used to produce the Size 24?

Thanks,

I don't remember any exceptions written into the one AD per week rule. It's
pretty simple and until Art says otherwise it should be respected. A lot of
dealers as well as dealers would bury us with mindless garbage and hype if
not for this basic guideline. 10 kilo lunar in your attic or not. One AD per
week works.

[meteorite-list] Rob's Comet's Exciting Explosion Part III

2006-10-28 Thread MexicoDoug
Hello shooting star devotees and comet origin enigmaticists,

Just an update on the great surprise comet of 2006,
C/2006 M4 (SWAN), discovered by Rob Matson by early July...

We are in bright Moonlight at the first quarter and Rob's comet continues to
be nicely visible from suburban or reasonable urban areas. Most suburban
locations will be fine and if you happen to live in the dust bowl try Cuivre
River Park Sunday night and look inside the Keystone for a guarantied
delightful view - can't miss it if the clouds hold back...I walked outside
this suburban locaion while on the computer and found it immediately despite
the first quarter Moon about a quarter turn of sky away at the same
elevation. The Comet is WNW about 280º(Seattle)-295º(Miami) on a compass at
two hours after Sunset for US latitudes the next few nights. It is the
greenest natural object in the skies and well worth the chase!

N. 30º13.40 Lat. Lunar First Quarter, 2006 OCT 28 20:49 EDT (29.035 UT)
C/2006 M4 (SWAN) 2006 Oct. 29.035 UT: m1=4.8, Dia.= 9', DC=8 vis. LM = 4.0

Photo tonight:
www.diogenite.com/061028-03.jpg

The above is a photo tonight taken less than 3 hours ago and Rob's Comet is
labeled. The brightest star to the left of the comet in the photo, Zeta
Herculis, is the second brightest star in the constellation Hercules. Zeta
Herculis is brightest star in Hercules' Keystone asterism, at magnitude 2.8.
The Comet is taking the scenic route through our heavens jetting by the
brightest Globular Cluster in the Northern hemisphere, the imposing M13, in
that neighborhood, which is sometimes visible with the naked eye at a
diffuse 5.9 magnitude. The photo with a typical digital camera zoomed for
highest magnification shows both the Comet and Globular Cluster. Two
fuzzies for the price of one...Initial reports of fragmentation as far as I
can see in a small telescope are not playing out...

Best wishes and clear skies,
Doug

Today is Astronomy Day in Denver and every year the members of Astronomy

RE: [meteorite-list] Canyon Diablo Spheroid Size

2006-10-28 Thread Steve Schoner
Dave,

What I remember Nininger telling me was that he used a set of standard
geologic grain sizing screens for shperoid sizing. I have a complete
set of shperoids from him. (There is a name for this set and I can't at
this time remember the specific term) This is a set of screens mounted
in circular rings that fit on on top of each other. Sand is poured in
the top ring and the assembly is shaken. Course grains stay on top and
the fines continue down to the smallest grain size. As I remember,
having used one many years ago, there are seven maybe more screen sizes
and each are given a specific # pertaining to grain size.
