Hi all,
Here are three hours at the Tucson Gem and Mineral
show condensed into three minutes. Nothing special,
just walking and talking with some meteorite dealers.

If you like this sort of thing let me know -maybe I'll
do more.

[meteorite-list] The goose that survived...(YES- it is meteorite related!)

The goose that survived crashing into a meteorite only
to be savaged by a fox!

February 5th, 2008 - 5:14 pm ICT by admin - Email
This Post

London, Feb 5 (ANI): A goose survived being hit by a
9lb meteorite and crashing into a car only to fall
prey to a hungry fox.

And, witness to all this was Brit postman Adrian
Mannion who was enjoying his morning cup of tea with
wife Fiona when the bizarre set of events unfolded.

According to Mannion, the Canada Goose was left dazed
when after banging into a meteorite, it fell headlong
into his cars roof, causing 2,500 pounds worth of
damage.

However, there was no reprieve for the bird, for a
hungry fox then grabbed it dragged it away before the
Mannions could rescue it.

We heard two almighty thuds and rushed out to see this
large, odd-looking rock next to our Mini and a very
poorly-looking mangled goose on the car roof, The Sun
quoted Mr Mannion, as saying.

A flock of Canada Geese were overhead so the falling
stone must have hit the poor creature.

Mrs Mannion added: It has to be the unluckiest bird
ever. It survived being knocked out by a meteorite
only to be savaged by a fox.

The meteorite is now being studied by researchers at
the University of Derby. It is one of only 1,000
asteroid fragments that hit earth each year. (ANI)

[meteorite-list] Not an Aubrite

2008-02-05 Thread Mike Bandli

This is ridiculous:

Obviously not an Aubrite as advertised. Not even Murchison (looks like CV3).
And what is 'Space Research Corporation?' The only info I can find is of a
notorious arms smuggling company. I emailed the seller and told him that it is
not an aubrite and that he would be ripping off some poor new meteorite
collector if it sells. The seller doesn't believe me because he has a 'COA' and
claims that he has received dozens of offers to end his auction early for $400.
Come on! Scam... By the way... COA is usually an acronym for: FAKE.

[meteorite-list] AD:Special NWA 4901 a pair of the once most expensive NWA ever

2008-02-05 Thread Martin Altmann
Dear collectors,

our Special deals this weak with a true legend of the still young history of
NWA-meteorites.

With NWA 4901 as a pairing of NWA 011
we want to let you participate in that material,
which already found his place among the most famous meteorites in the annals
of meteoritics.

The senior collectors will well remember the enormous shake, NWA 011
provoked in the world of scientists and in the collectors community
likewise;  the initial debates about its possible origin from Mercury, the
distribution of the material and so on.
Little shavings sold at 100$ per milligram, making that material to the most
expensive NWA ever and the 4th most expensive meteorite - after Calcalong
Creek and the very early DaG 400 and 262 – in history.

It would be foolhardy if we would try to delineate the astounding
particularities and circumstances about that meteorite
in a detailed manner here, as it never could rival the excellent write-up
about NWA 011 on David Weir’s page.
(who surprisingly is still not yet awarded with the IMCA Gold Medal for the
excellent service, that he’s supplying for many years to scientists and
collectors with his fabulous Meteorite Studies Site!).
Therefore we set here the link:
http://www.meteoritestudies.com/protected_NWA011.HTM

There you’ll find all results of the analyses of NWA 011, the
interpretation, its complex genesis and thermal history, the supposed
origin, but also its turbulent human reception here down on Earth.

Perhaps in a short form: NWA 4901 has eucritic characteristics, but is a
basalt, stemming from an other former large parent body than Vesta.

Well, and beside the manmade uproar – NWA 4901 with it’s leopardizing
interchange of transparent and opaque crystals..
that meteorite is one of the most eye-appealing and beautiful stones of all
in our opinion!
And we are sure, that many collectors, who already own a specimen from the
pairing-group will fully agree.

We decided to set up for sale a couple of budget-sized slices and priced
them at a irresistible 180$/g.

I am one of those collectors and I fully agree with each and every word!
I purchased a 0.914-gram slice of NWA 4587 from Greg Hupé about a
year ago and it looks terrific under a microscope - not to mention a look
at a thin section in cross-polarized light!

We decided to set up for sale a couple of budget-
sized slices and priced them at a irresistible 180$/g.

http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/special-nwa4901.html

Yes, the price is irresistable. I paid $225+shipping for my beautiful slice
of NWA 4587. If I didn't already have this exotic beauty in my collection,
my favorite piece would be the specimen weighing 3.319 g. Just look at that
gorgeous black spot in the lower left part of that specimen! Chromite or
ilmenite, I suppose!

[meteorite-list] Cheap meteorites for classroom give aways

2008-02-05 Thread E.P. Grondine
Hi Jason -

Agree with you about the Barringer Crater chips being
very highly oxidized - but they are cheap, labeled,
provenienced, and available, and if you have classroom
full of kids...

If someone with connections in Russia or Argentina
wishes to provide for this market that would be
wonderful.

I seem to remember that the store there also had
inexpensive tektites, as well as coprolites. While
this isn't what a hard-core high-end meteorite
collector might want, I remember the store as well
done and not exploitative.

Speaking of the educational market, I seem to remember
that years ago the Jensens were selling boxes with
many types of micro mounts.

Perhaps in a short form: NWA 4901 has eucritic characteristics, but is a
basalt, stemming from an other former large parent body than Vesta.

Well, and beside the manmade uproar - NWA 4901 with it's leopardizing
interchange of transparent and opaque crystals..
that meteorite is one of the most eye-appealing and beautiful stones of all
in our opinion!
And we are sure, that many collectors, who already own a specimen from the
pairing-group will fully agree.

We decided to set up for sale a couple of budget-sized slices and priced
them at a irresistible 180$/g.

[meteorite-list] Real Aubrite - NWA 4799

2008-02-05 Thread Greg Hupe

Hello All who love Aubrites,

NWA 4799 - The first TRUE Aubrite from Northwest Africa. Even though I have
previously announced NWA 4799, here are some great photos of this beauty:

Obviously not an Aubrite as advertised. Not even Murchison (looks like
CV3). And what is 'Space Research Corporation?' The only info I can find
is of a notorious arms smuggling company. I emailed the seller and told
him that it is not an aubrite and that he would be ripping off some poor
new meteorite collector if it sells. The seller doesn't believe me because
he has a 'COA' and claims that he has received dozens of offers to end his
auction early for $400. Come on! Scam... By the way... COA is usually an

Re: [meteorite-list] AD:Special NWA 4901 a pair of the once mostexpensive NWA ever

2008-02-05 Thread Martin Altmann
Yes it is - normally if you're able to identify quartz on a suspected stone,
you can throw it away, as it's no meteorite.
But in a very few, of course as you mentioned in very small amounts, quartz
is found - e.g. in some Martian basalts, NWa 856 for instance (if I remember
right) has some.

Creek and the very early DaG 400 and 262 - in history.

It would be foolhardy if we would try to delineate the astounding
particularities and circumstances about that meteorite
in a detailed manner here, as it never could rival the excellent write-up
about NWA 011 on David Weir's page.
(who surprisingly is still not yet awarded with the IMCA Gold Medal for the
excellent service, that he's supplying for many years to scientists and
collectors with his fabulous Meteorite Studies Site!).
Therefore we set here the link:
http://www.meteoritestudies.com/protected_NWA011.HTM

There you'll find all results of the analyses of NWA 011, the
interpretation, its complex genesis and thermal history, the supposed
origin, but also its turbulent human reception here down on Earth.

Perhaps in a short form: NWA 4901 has eucritic characteristics, but is a

Wonder with all the tossing around this meteorite's history involved,
whether the QUARTZ showed signs of Shock?

[meteorite-list] Ensisheim: What is the TRUE FALL DATE??

2008-02-05 Thread Don Merchant
Hi List. Can someone tell me why there is a discrepancy to the fall date of
Ensisheim? I see some World Class Museums as well as articles with specimen
photo's of Ensisheim and they state Fell November 16th 1492 Yet I see
other reference articles and meteorite info data bases state Fell November
7th 1492 Is there a reason to this? Are the dates both right? Slightly
confused on this.

Re: [meteorite-list] Ensisheim: What is the TRUE FALL DATE??

2008-02-05 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi, Don, List,

The difference between the two dates is the difference
between the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Of course, the
Gregorian calendar was not devised until after the Fall, so
the date of Nov. 7 is what they called that day in the Julian
calendar in use at that time, but in a more accurate calendar,
the Gregorian (which we use today), it was Nov. 16, by the
solar orbit (well, pretty close).

Of course, it's not really that simple. I made a really long
Post with all the details about all this date confusion back
when we were talking about the Nagota fall in Japan in 861
AD. Being a helpful fellow, I went to the List Archives to
get you the URL, but it requires a password to look (never
used to) but the site doesn't recognize the password I retrieved,
so now I'm past caring. I posted it on November 18, 2007
Subject: japan fall date, or something like that, If you want,
I can forward you a copy of the post. Let me know.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite-list Digest, Vol 52, Issue 9

2008-02-05 Thread Bob Loeffler
And notice that he spells meteorite, origin and weight wrong on the
certificate! And what does the specimen weight mean? Is that the
specimen that is being sold? Obviously not 1655 grams! Or is that the TKW?
Or is that the size of the specimen that was tested before they sliced off
this specimen? It's amazing that fraud can proliferate like this without
someone throwing them in jail. I wish eBay could crack down on people like
this (no jail time, but boot them off of eBay). Even if this guy was
innocent and was sold the specimen and COA by someone else, he should still
be reprimanded because he obviously doesn't have a reputable source and
doesn't care.

Bob
