I seen a painting, That I knew was a $5,000.-$7,000. painting. The est. was only $100.-200. dollars, I knew this painting was placed in the wrong category at this auction. So, most people did not go into this category looking for good paintings! But I knew a few might! So I waited, till the end of the auction, and put in my bid, seconds before it ended! I got this painting for only $168.00 dollars. When it comes to collecting, If you know the value of what is for sale! (or just love it, and have to have it) and you know it is under valued, (if you really want it cheap) YOU SNIPE IT! ME myself could never afford to pay gallery price! I do not know enough about meteorites, and am not in the position to do so now, But if I could, YES, ON A, ON LINE AUCTION, THAT I KNEW WAS selling at a fraction of the price ...i would snipe every time. Only because of my life-long art research, and these opportunities, is my a apt. a little modern art museum. I wish 25 years ago I know about meteorites! Dave Myers --- On Wed, 3/17/10, Richard Kowalski damoc...@yahoo.com wrote: From: Richard Kowalski damoc...@yahoo.com Subject: [meteorite-list] The Sniper Mentality To: meteorite list meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Date: Wednesday, March 17, 2010, 11:58 PM This mentality, waiting until the last few seconds before bidding, is something I just don't get. Maybe someone can explain it to me. I bid for lots on ebay just like I do when I bid at a real auction. I set in my head what I believe the value of an item and what I have available in my budget to bid for that item. I then bid that much and no more. If I get the item, great. If not, someone wanted it more and we're willing to pay more for the item... While I will sometimes raise my ebay bid a little before the end of the auction, I really don't understand the idea of sitting there and in the last second or two, to try to jam in bids high enough to win the item. Do snipers really want the item or are they just trying to screw others out of the item? Are they just trying to get the item at a lower price, thinking that their competitors will just rebid again, upping the price? I see this on meteorite auctions every so often, but much more often on the Daguerreotypes I bid on. The reason I was reminded of it was a lot I just lost out on. There wasn't just one sniper, but two. The both bid at the exact same time, 2 seconds before the auction ended... As I said, it doesn't mater that I lost the lot. It went for more than I was willing to pay, so I wouldn't have rebid even if I could. Possibly someone can explain what is gained by bidding like this instead of just bidding what you think it's worth and letting it go for that... I'd really like to see ebay eliminate this foolery. It'd be pretty simple. Any bids that occur within one minute of the closing time of the auction automatically resets the end time by 10 minutes, or 30 minutes. The snipers games are eliminated and the dealers (and ebay) gets more profits because the auction remains open for the bidding to continue to higher levels. Just like in a real live auction. However, a writer and social activist, the lady who called, seems to be slowly getting through. He has asked her for a moon rock and she called expecting that moon rocks were plentiful and cheap; she quickly became disabused of the notion. Since we do sell meteorites, I suggested a small one which she is willing to pay out of her own pocket. I have to write a short note as an astronomer certifying it is a rock from space. Then I thought of this group: would someone be willing to donate a lunar micro to the cause ? That would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me off-list if interested. I vary in my bidding methods, depending on the current bid, how many people are bidding, how much I want the item... People snipe so that they have the best chance of getting the item for as cheaply as possible. Usually I bid my maximum as late as possible; if I can, manually sniping in the last few seconds. This puts my bid in late enough so that others can't 'top' it or raise it and make me pay more. I may put in an absentee bid early on if I know I won't be online when the auction is closing. I don't always win my item, but often enough I do, and for less than I was willing to pay, that it works for me. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it. ;) Best! Eric, Do an ebay search for 'coupon' and you'll get over 100,000 items. How would Joe's Meteorites 10% off coupon be different than Victoria Secret Free undies panty coupon + $10 OFF bra (auction currently on ebay with 2 minutes left to go - snipers, get ready!!) Paul Unfortunately this would not work because it seems they've thought of everything... Everything to limit the seller anyway. ...You can't refer to or promote your personal website (including links to home page web addresses that promote outside-of-eBay websites), sales outside of eBay, or other businesses... Listing an item and then being paid outside the eBay system. - Not allowed and ...We don't allow our members to use eBay to contact each other to make offers to buy or sell items outside of eBay Regards, Eric ** What if a seller sold an option to buy instead of the item itself? For example, suppose you have a meteorite that you expect to go for $1,000. You create a nice certificate, suitable for framing, that says the winner can buy your meteorite at 10 times the price paid for the certificate. Then, you auction the certificate. You would expect the certificate to sell for about $100, which is what ebay would calculate their FVF on, so they get nine bucks. Bid increments would run from 25 cents to a dollar, which equates to 2.50 and 10.00, respectively, when the option is exercised. Of course, the buyer would get credit for the price of the certificate. Best of all, ebay is counter-screwed. Years ago when I was still selling on Ebay, I had an interesting insight in the sniper mentality. The auction was for a Tatahouine, about 4-5 grams, very nice but not exceptional. With minutes to go, two guys got into a sniping war, I don't know if they were using a software or sitting in front of their computers but the batlle raged with bids coming in every couple seconds. [meteorite-list] Keeping a meteorite database
Greetings list, I remember several years ago that one of the list members (I think) had a meteorite database available on CD. It was simply a matter of downloading to your computer and it formed the framework for keeping all pertinent info on your collection, including a place for photos. Is there something like this still available? If not I would like to ask that those that do catalogue their collections please give me some ideas on what programs you are using. I really have no idea of where to start. Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated. And if there are any computer geeks on the list, a CD like the one I mentioned would probably sell quite well here on the list. thanx, Steve Steve Witt IMCA #9020 http://imca.cc/ __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Ad Ebay sellers must see
Yeah, I'll have to try some listings on Astro Auctions, Mike. There's only 3 auctions listed there though, at the moment. I have to disagree on Astromart, though. In my opinion, it's the best place on the web to buy and sell astro gear. Much safer than ebay, as either a buyer or a seller. Not the best market for meteorites, I must admit. 85,000 members, but they're mainly interested in scopes and accessories. Still, after a one-time registration fee of $12, you're able to place up to 35 ads in any 6 months period with no cost. They do have Terms of Service though, and they don't allow dealers to set up shop there, without contributing. They don't allow simultaneous listings on other sites, especially pee-bay. Having a website you sell from is a definite no-no. But it's all spelled out in the TOS. Quite reasonable for the most part, in my opinion. And no, Tony Soprano doesn't put the hammer down. There is a peer group through which violations are policed. They debate and vote on TOS infractions, and their decision is then enforced. If they notice that you're always selling the same thing... say meteorites... they might decide you're a dealer and ask you to buy ad packs. But for guys like me, who mainly buy, and only occasionally sell anything, it's great. By the way Mike, the site is now administered by Astromart LLC. Herb bowed out quite a while back. Couldn't handle the headaches any more, I guess. For anyone else, I am not affiliated with Astromart in any way, other than being a happy member/user. Totally free of fees. The time it takes to list an item is 30 seconds to one minute. How many new dealers started listing there? None. I see is that you are going to miss a massive chunk of the exposure that eBay provides. Not really. List meteorites at both sites. They are not mutually exclusive.
