Same here in Savannah, GA.

Nearing totality now.

What an eerie sight, to see stars one does not ordinarily see during a full
moon.

Re: [meteorite-list] [IMCA] Update 2 - Wilbur Wash (correction)

2010-12-21 Thread Jason Utas
Hello Martin, All,

although I'm not so rhetorically trained like you, I guess,
you started (once again) in your initial email with a post hoc ergo propter
 hoc..

After all, if I knew you would reply anyways ; )

The greater good of
. don't teach us anything new.

1st - who else is still classifying thousands of OCs aside the classifiers
 involved in the Antarctics?

There are 3256 approved/official NWA meteorites, of which 2325 are
ordinary chondrites.
To say nothing of the countless Omani finds as well as those from
elsewhere, yes, thousands are being analyzed. By whom? By many
researchers worldwide.

2nd - why then such a legal drama in so many countries, regarding ownership,
heritage, ect. if that stuff is so uninteresting?

Two reasons.

One is the fact that they're worth so much.

The other is that no lawmakers know enough about meteorites to say no
meteorites other than ordinary chondrites may leave our country.
Well, even if they did, it would be a useless law, because a country
that tried to do that would have to train its customs officers to
recognize the difference between an achondrite and a common chondrite.
And that's not going to happen.

No.  They're generally expected to write a papers/conduct research at
a set rate

Difficult to write a paper, if you don't have results from analyzes to write
 about.
At least until meteoritics will be reckoned to the humanities.   (Quiet
 Mathias!)

I agree - but if we're to assume that scientists discard ordinary
chondrites and work only on the 'interesting' meteorites, then they're
still going to have new meteorites to write papers about.

paid only to
conduct research

I think most of them understand analyses of new meteorites as research too.

Many researchers' jobs depend on their writing 1-2+ research papers
per year, and there's no provision about analyzing new meteorites
(I've spoken with a few who analyze meteorites for whom this is the
case). Analyzing a new meteorite is a task that takes up time and
money that they could otherwise have put towards their research
project, and there is little incentive to do it.

I'm not going to ask
Bill Gates to analyze all of the meteorites in the world just because
he makes the most money.

Right, but would you pay in a restaurant to the bill an extra for the cook,
if the egg in your diner was not uncooked?

It is the cook's job to cook the egg I eat at a restaurant. What you
don't seem to understand is that many researchers are hired for
research -- and the analysis of new meteorites isn't part of their job
description. It would be a much better question to ask if you think
you should tip the waited if the service was excellent, but the egg
undercooked. Because it wasn't the waiter's fault that the egg was
underdone. Rather, it was the chef's fault, and they almost never
share tips.

Furthermore, you seem to have completely missed the point

I don't think so, cause that's why we personally spare the classifiers the
 OCs and the junk meteorites.

But I'm glad to see advances in your opinion.

You do? I just spent the afternoon at UCLA, and saw excel
spreadsheets full of submissions of NWA ordinary chondrites - the fact
that 71.4% of all approved NWA's are ordinary chondrites should tell
you as much.

isn't easy to decipher.
 Doesn't matter, was off-topic.

But you seem to be equating
working in a lab analyzing meteorites to the profession of finding and
dealing meteorites.

In no way. That would be in contrary to the above, a cum hoc ergo propter
 hoc from your side :-)

http://www.fallacyfiles.org/cumhocfa.html

So A is true and B is true, but A doesn't cause B? There's no way
that my interpretation of what you said as a comparison between two
professions is a cum hoc, ergo propter hoc. That just doesn't make
sense.

Let me quote you:

Although I concede, that the modern practice to give scientists, especially
the younger and in branches with an excess supply of applicants, only serial
contracts of always maximum 2 years, is quite shabby, cause they are often
so lousy endowed, that they reach almost the level of successful planetaries
recoverers only. I hope in overseas it's better?)
So it can be a pretty thankless job.
Sounds like the description of a meteorite hunter, dealer, finder,
who mainly have to live from their passion :-)

Yes, you are comparing scientists to meteorite hunters/dealers. This
has nothing to do with cum hoc, ergo propter hoc.

...

Have you been reading the recent posts?

 Is Catterton J plenty?

You seem to think that if someone disagrees with you and your idea
that all meteorites should be found as quickly as possible without a
care for proper documentation (at least coordinates), they must be
against all meteorite dealers.

I don't have a latin phrase for that kind of assumption, but rest
assured, it doesn't make sense.

So you're saying that these scientists should be analyzing meteorites
because it's their passion.

 No. Where?

I have 54 auctions ending tonight, all started at 99 cents with no reserve.
There are many great items, some without an opening bid. I am in the process
of
doing a year-end inventory and put up an extra set of auctions totaling several
thousand dollars. A few items are worth more than $1,000.00 each and were
started at just 99 cents!

I will re-list all the items won by tri-ball34 once I receive credit from
eBay for non-payment from this bogus bidder. This will give those a who were
interested and outbid another chance at these items so continue to check back
as
I will be listing these in a few days.

Please click on the link below to see many fantastic items.

[meteorite-list] Question about lost shipment and what to do.

2010-12-21 Thread Mike Miller
Hi all, I shipped a priority flat rate box on Dec 6th and it was
scanned and left the Las Vegas sort facility on the same evening. Now
ever since it has just said it was in transit to its destination. I
did use a signature confirmation. The bad news is it is a meteorite
that I sold for several thousand dollars...I know but it is too
late to register and insure the package. I am hoping there is some one
who investigates something like this because I don't think the item
was lost it was in a flat rate box, hard to miss that lying on the
floor. So if it is gone then I am guessing someone has stolen it.
Input would be helpfuland I guess the moral of the story is
shipped expensive items insured and registered, they can go missig
even from state to state.

Mike,

I shipped a package to Gary Fujihara in Hawaii under the exact same
circumstances - It was very late (about 3 weeks) I went to the post
office and talked to someone there that gave me a number to call. I
called and also gave it to Gary and he called too. Somehow they WERE
able to track and find the package. I don't have that number anymore
but maybe Gary still does. They were very good at finding it! Even
called every few days to let me know what was going on.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question about lost shipment and what to do.

2010-12-21 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi Mike,

Take the signature confirmation receipt to the PO and have them check
their computer (which is updated sooner and more often than the web
version).

If the package was signed for, then you are off the hook for it.

If the package wasn't signed for, then the PO should be able to track
it in detail because the label number on signature confirmation is a
true tracking number, unlike delivery confirmation which is not.

It might be sitting at the destination post office because nobody was
at home to sign for it. I've notice that even with signature
confirmation, the web tracking is spotty at best. I've had packages
go without a status update, even when the package was delivered and
signed for. I guess it just depends on who scans the package and who
is working in the computer room at the moment.

Good luck and don't feel bad about using USPS. I've had 10 times as
many problems with UPS and never use them any more.

Best regards,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] Question about lost shipment and what to do.

2010-12-21 Thread al mitt

Greetings Mike and all,

I had something similar happen with the Post Office one time. It ended up
going to the hub in Pennsylvania (from Indiana). You first have to let
them know it is not moving or possibly lost. They make a note of it but will
tell you that you have to wait a couple of weeks. I did so and went back
(different person) and they gave me the same story that I would have to
wait. I asked to see the supervisor, she told me I would have to wait a
couple of weeks (consistant aren't they). I told her that I had and had
waited three weeks prior to that so it had been over five weeks and it still
showed being at the hub. This got her attention and I believe she made some
phone calls. Mysteriously the package started to move a day or two later and
the package finally was received. I had used insurance so they were a bit
more worried about it. Insurance costs about $1 per hundred last I looked.

I would bet with the holiday traffic, it has been sitting behind other
packages and hasn't been looked at. If you put in a formal lost in the mail
then wait a bit longer you can then get them to start making phone calls.

Of course it could always be stolen. Best not to advertise what you have in
the box. Just say rock sample.

I wish you good luck and hope that things work out well for you. If not you
have to chalk it up as a lost and let your business absorb it. Hope this
helps.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question about lost shipment and what to do.

2010-12-21 Thread Chris Peterson
It may not be lost. Remember, there is no more unreliable delivery service
than the Post Office. Their tracking systems don't work, they use marginal
subcontractors, once something is in their custody it could be anywhere.
Don't give up hope... it's more likely to simply be laying on the floor of
some substation somewhere than to have been stolen. If so, it will show up
one of these days.

[meteorite-list] Question about lost shipment and what to do.

2010-12-21 Thread bernd . pauli
Mike wrote:

Thanks very much it seems most of the time these things have a
pleasant ending. You have all given me me a little more hope.

Hello Mike and List,

Mailing and waiting for packages can be an unnerving project around Christmas
time. Your lost shipment reminds me of my NWA 1909 and my NWA 1943 slices from
Mike Farmer back in 2003 (October 01) -- a 600$$+ value. The package was already
in the hands of the German customs authorities about 16 km (about 10 miles) from
where we live and I was haggling with them via telephone over customs fees.

They finally agreed to send it to my home address but it never arrived even
though
I had a photo copy of the customs papers from these customs dudes. More calls
...,
etc. followed ... and they informed me the package was possibly on its way back
to
Tucson. If not, they added, the sender would have to start a tracer :-(

On December 17, I received an email from Mike Farmer informing me that the
meteorites
had arrived back to him, that the packaging had been removed, that the
meteorites were
loose in the box which was smashed, but the meteorites were fine and undamaged!

Mike resent them and the finally arrived (a second time) on Dec 30, 2003!
That's 3 months, now ... go figure!

Keeping my fingers crossed for your package!

Bernd (in Germany)

Re: [meteorite-list] Question about lost shipment and what to do.

2010-12-21 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi Mike, Gary, Al, Bernd, Chris, and List,

I concur with Gary on this one about USPS. Now, I don't completely
disagree with Chris Peterson's assessment of the postal service,
because they have their fair share of inefficiency and waste - and
that is why they are hemorrhaging money to the tune of billions of
dollars.

Perhaps I have just been lucky with USPS. It is very rarely that I
lose a package without a trace. I've been selling a wide-range of
collectibles online since 1999 and I can count on one hand the number
of times USPS has lost a package (or damaged it to the point of being
a total loss). This handful of lost packages was the minority in
thousands of successful mailings.

More frequently, a package will be slow through USPS and take several
days (to weeks) longer to arrive than it should. Delays of a few days
are not uncommon and delays of weeks happen about once a year. In my
personal experience, the hiccup rate with USPS is about one package
out of a few or several hundreds.

On the other hand, I have shipped via UPS about 20 times in my
lifetime. Out of those 20 times, I have had major issues about a
half-dozen times. This includes lost packages, damaged packages, and
very poor customer service. My personal hiccup rate with UPS has been
about 25-30% of packages shipped. For this reason, I ceased using
them entirely about 2 years ago. I don't even like buying from
vendors who use UPS and I tend to avoid sellers who ship via UPS in
favor of those who ship via USPS or FedEx.

I've never had a problem with FedEx and find their service to be
reliable, albeit more expensive.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question about lost shipment and what to do.

2010-12-21 Thread Alexander Seidel
Many years ago I had a meteorite rock´n roll back and forth from Down Under,
one complete roundtrip and another one way trip over the Pacific Ocean, half
around the globe, after it finally safely arrived. This was all due to some
really minor problem at my destination here, where the post office usually
doesn´t hold it for longer than 7 days once a first attempt of delivery to the
private address fails, because the addressee is in the office and not at home
at time of delivery, so in the wrong place at the wrong time...

On another occasion I waited for more than three weeks for a small delivery
from a dealer based in our neighbour country Switzerland, which is very close
in geographical distance, but is not one of the EU countries, so goods are
often delayed because of (sometimes) tough customs controls.

Well, Mike, what I want to say to you: don´t give your meteorite up! It is
likely that it will turn up again, one or the other way. I´ll keep my thumbs
pressed...

Have a nice Christmas time all, a happy New Years Eve, and a good start into
2011!

Re: [meteorite-list] Question about lost shipment and what to do.

2010-12-21 Thread Linton Rohr

Greetings Mike and Listoids,
I shipped a premium eyepiece to a buyer on the east coast last year (South
Carolina?) and he wrote that he had not received it a week later. USPS
Delivery Confirmation showed that it had been delivered. When the postmaster
called to inquire WHERE they had delivered it, they discovered it had gotten
mixed in with the enormous load of daily returns that go to the (nearby) QVC
shopping network! In QVC's own zip code! We had to wait for QVC to process
through the bins full of returns, but they found the package and returned it
to the post office, who got a second chance to deliver, in which they were
successful. Priority Mail, indeed. The whole thing took about a month, but
all's well that ends well I guess.
I had feared having to refund the purchase price, but I imagine there's a
similar happy ending awaiting you.

Linton

to send it overnight express, and two weeks later it had not arrived. I
just happened to be at the postoffice talking to the manager in the back
where stuff comes in when a bag of parcel post packages arrived. Right on
top was my express package! So there is hope! Often I find when a
package fails to arrive on time it is misdirected to a wrong zipcode
thousands of miles away, but it eventually gets delivered, usually after a
delay of a couple of weeks.

Aloha Mike,

Sorry to hear about your package going AWOL, but as everyone has already
mentioned, there is hope that it will eventually arrive at its
destination.

FWIW, despite everyone's grim perspective of the USPS, I have found their
service to be exemplary, especially when compared to UPS who gouge us in
Hawaii and lose or damage packages on a seemingly regular basis. Gotta
also remember that its the busiest season of the year for the post
office, who are operating under a constrained budget with less staffing
than in years past. Good luck getting your package to its destination
Mike!

Hi all, I shipped a priority flat rate box on Dec 6th and it was

that I sold for several thousand dollars...I know but it is too
late to register and insure the package.

[meteorite-list] eclipse photos

2010-12-21 Thread Mike Hankey
I had a great eclipse observing and photography session last night,
but boy am I tired.

Photographing an eclipse is a real challenge, but luckily the clouds
stayed away for most of the night and everything came together pretty
well.

I uploaded some of the photos here:

http://www.mikesastrophotos.com/lunar/lunar-eclipse-december-21st-2010/

I had a fish eye camera working the whole night, hoping to catch a
meteor, but didn't get that lucky.

Check out ebay item number 120661711027

This nutcase also claims to be selling a North American Biologic Planetary
Meteorite  with clear evidence of well preserved fossils of crab, sea worms,

This one is a game changer along with the associated non-existent 125 meter
diameter crater formed in 2006, and it is on film!

So are the users of ebay smart enough to see through this one

Sigh..

Re: [meteorite-list] Rocks from Space Picture of Day - December 22, 2010

2010-12-21 Thread Jason Utas
Hello Count,
Mundrabilla looks like so when cut:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/65/Mundrabilla_meteorite_NMNH_slice.jpg

It's a coral-like intergrowth of Fe-Ni and troilite.
They would probably have looked spectacular when found, but sadly
their current surface morphology is due to the fact that troilite
weathers more quickly than iron. The inclusions weather away or
weather out of the iron framework leaving a spongelike structure
behind.
There are two similar meteorites; Waterville and Buffalo Gap are in
the same IAB grouplet, and all three have high concentrations of
troilite. There are also a few others like Georgetown that are
structurally similar, but I believe chemically unrelated.
Regards,
Jason
