[meteorite-list] SOHO Spots 2000th Comet
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/soho/comet-2000.html SOHO Spots 2000th Comet Karen C. Fox NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center December 28, 2010 As people on Earth celebrate the holidays and prepare to ring in the New Year, an ESA/NASA spacecraft has quietly reached its own milestone: on December 26, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) discovered its 2000th comet. Drawing on help from citizen scientists around the world, SOHO has become the single greatest comet finder of all time. This is all the more impressive since SOHO was not specifically designed to find comets, but to monitor the sun. Since it launched on December 2, 1995 to observe the sun, SOHO has more than doubled the number of comets for which orbits have been determined over the last three hundred years, says Joe Gurman, the U.S. project scientist for SOHO at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Of course, it is not SOHO itself that discovers the comets -- that is the province of the dozens of amateur astronomer volunteers who daily pore over the fuzzy lights dancing across the pictures produced by SOHO's LASCO (or Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph) cameras. Over 70 people representing 18 different countries have helped spot comets over the last 15 years by searching through the publicly available SOHO images online. The 1999th and 2000th comet were both discovered on December 26 by Michal Kusiak, an astronomy student at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. Kusiak found his first SOHO comet in November 2007 and has since found more than 100. There are a lot of people who do it, says Karl Battams who has been in charge of running the SOHO comet-sighting website since 2003 for the Naval Research Lab in Washington, where he also does computer processing for LASCO. They do it for free, they're extremely thorough, and if it wasn't for these people, most of this stuff would never see the light of day. Battams receives reports from people who think that one of the spots in SOHO's LASCO images looks to be the correct size and brightness and headed for the sun - characteristics typical of the comets SOHO finds. He confirms the finding, gives each comet an unofficial number, and then sends the information off to the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Mass, which categorizes small astronomical bodies and their orbits. It took SOHO ten years to spot its first thousand comets, but only five more to find the next thousand. That's due partly to increased participation from comet hunters and work done to optimize the images for comet-sighting, but also due to an unexplained systematic increase in the number of comets around the sun. Indeed, December alone has seen an unprecedented 37 new comets spotted so far, a number high enough to qualify as a comet storm. LASCO was not designed primarily to spot comets. The LASCO camera blocks out the brightest part of the sun in order to better watch emissions in the sun's much fainter outer atmosphere, or corona. LASCO's comet finding skills are a natural side effect -- with the sun blocked, it's also much easier to see dimmer objects such as comets. But there is definitely a lot of science that comes with these comets, says Battams. First, now we know there are far more comets in the inner solar system than we were previously aware of, and that can tell us a lot about where such things come from and how they're formed originally and break up. We can tell that a lot of these comets all have a common origin. Indeed, says Battams, a full 85% of the comets discovered with LASCO are thought to come from a single group known as the Kreutz family, believed to be the remnants of a single large comet that broke up several hundred years ago. The Kreutz family comets are sungrazers - bodies whose orbits approach so near the Sun that most are vaporized within hours of discovery - but many of the other LASCO comets boomerang around the sun and return periodically. One frequent visitor is comet 96P Machholz. Orbiting the sun approximately every six years, this comet has now been seen by SOHO three times. SOHO is a cooperative project between the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA. The spacecraft was built in Europe for ESA and equipped with instruments by teams of scientists in Europe and the USA. Carl, All, For those who apparently don't know how to read the bidding statistics on a given page, the important thing to look at is the time at which a bid was placed -- not the order in which it appears on the list. The current top bid, held by 3***g( 93), was placed on December 31st, at ~10:30am PST. a***a( 419) tried to outbid 3***g( 93) twice the next day (Jan. 1), placing bids of $50 and $60. At this point, s***t( 0 ) placed no fewer than 14 bids, the last of which was for $180. This drove the price to $182.50, which...makes sense, since the bid increment up to $250 is $2.50. This looks like a typical example of someone bidding an item up. But since we all know Geoff and he does have good standing, it would be strange to accuse him of anything without evidence of some sort. It's probably just someone who doesn't understand how best to use ebay. Or it could even be a recurrence of our non-paying fellow from a week or so ago... Hey Don, Greg, Did you even bother looking at who's auction this is? Do you realize that the Met-List is a PUBLIC forum? Not just in your email box... Maybe you don't mean to associate a reputable member of this communbity with the practices you mention, but your statements can be seriously misinterpreted by others. Perhaps showing some thoughtful intelligent restraint is a good thing here instead of being overly suspicious by pointing out probably completely unrelated circumstances which could cause an automatic and mistaken association with one of our communities most reputable dealers. It's probably just and overly zealous and extremely excited inexperienced bidder. Re: [meteorite-list] Another crazy bidder on ebay
Seems odd that somehow Geoff got mixed up in this discussion. I see this as nothing more that tv-show groupees seeing a value (perhaps rightly so if they had discovered the B-meteorites, but even still because of the celeb status)...for anyone unaware of current $-trends for any Bassikounou, and never looking into real-collection offering pricings, I can actually see this happening. (Even Sikhote Alin ~30-40 gram rusty-oily shrapnels were going for 1$+/gram today, go figure.) When I originally read the first two posts, Geoff never came to mind, still doesn't. Certainly shill-bidding didn't. Let's watch the newbees instead. [meteorite-list] Re-2: Another crazy bidder on ebay
Hello Jason, Hello List, Here's my assumption: I don't have to reiterate that this oriented piece is a beauty in its own right! Geoff, as some of you may know, is the administrator of CSR (Club Space Rock). You'll find a lot of enthusiastic, fervent, new collectors there who would gladly give almost anything just to call such an exquisite piece their own. Geoff informed his forum members that this spectacular, flight-oriented piece was on EBay without reserve. I personally think that someone who is new to collecting has eyes only (only in the positive connotation of the word) for the exotic beauty and rarity of this flight-oriented specimen with its frothy, fresh fusion crust and distinct roll-over lipping ... ... and: No, it's not me! [meteorite-list] MHC Magazine
As promised... Update on the status of Meteorite Hunting Collecting Magazine. We go to print this week! No need to worry, everyone will receive their magazines this month shipped direct from our printer. This delay has been caused simply by the overwhelming success and growth of the magazine. I'll admit I was slightly unprepared for such a massively positive response and extremely fast growth, we've been working very hard to get back on schedule. It's been hugely popular throughout the meteorite community. Aside from the slow schedule of course, there's been nothing but praise for the quality of the publication and the fabulous meteorite content. I have all of you, my supporters, and contributors to thank for that. Without you guys this magazine would not be possible. Thank you all for your patience and support. Happy New Year! Re: [meteorite-list] Another crazy bidder on ebay
Hello List and Associates, Some of us who sell and buy at auction have just fought off an expensive attack by an unscrupulous pseudo-bidder. It's unnerving to realize someone is out there in cyberspace intent on, at the least, harming us financially. Worse, he has succeeded, knowingly or not, in promoting cyancisim amongst us.. Like lions in a cage that have been prodded with a stick, we whirl and snarl and bite at every threat real, or imagined. I'm sure gentleman Geoff understands what's going on and forgives the overspray. Don't forget, this auction is for an extremely exquisite, flight oriented, rollover lipped, beautifully fusion crusted meteorite, being offered by none of than the world famous Geoff Notkin of the Meteorite Men. Naaa... That couldn't possibly be the reason it's got such high bids. Regards, Eric On 1/2/2011 2:50 PM, GREG LINDH wrote: An Ebayer bidding on his own stuff. Wow, there's a shocker. Greg L.
