[meteorite-list] Udei Station vs. NWA4024 winonaite types
List, When stumbling across an ad for NWA4024 I saw pictures of the meteorite and immediately thought how similar it looks to Udei Station. Comparing the pics of NWA4024 and my slices of Udei Station reveal very similar compositions. However, NWA4024 is classiifed as a winonite where as Udei Station is classified as an IAB iron. Further research shows that it is likely Udei Station and other IAB irons along with Winonites come from the same parent body. My question is, what is the dividing line between Winonites and IAB's? How does one decide which group the meteorite should fall? Is it %Fe? Thanks for any help and Cheers! Thanks for that, Darren. I found it particularly interesting because I started my own archaeological career in the early 80s in a similar way. Re: [meteorite-list] Udei Station vs. NWA4024 winonaite types
Hi Mike Tett., What I understand is that Winonaites are essentially the 'pop-out' silicates from silicated irons, the non-iron inclusions. Basically, if someone were to extract the silicates from silicated irons, they would have Winonaites left over. There are several list members who can explain all this better than my quick layman description. Re: [meteorite-list] Aeschylus
Well, Bill, ladies gentlemen, we know the situation as follows: An eagle (most probably a lammergeier), circling in the sky right above the poet and carrying a turtle in his claws, is looking for a rock to throw his prey on, cracking it's shell. Aischylos' cleanhead, shimmering in the sun, seemes to be exactly the right target, and ... crack. Bit unexpected I guess 'cause a poets skull should be one of the most solid things of the world. [meteorite-list] Scale Cubes
Hello Kevin, There are also 1-inch ones that NASA uses. The typical ones used in the collector community are 1cm square. The N,S,E,W,T,B are directional references for photographing specimens. T=Top, B=Bottom, N=North, E=East...so on. What I typically do before I cut something rare is to choose a side of the stone that I want as the 'Top' and 'North'(usually first image towards camera) I then turn the stone 90 degrees in one direction along with the cube turned same way. If you want an image of the bottom of the item, flip it over and flip the cube over the same way. A little hard to describe in words, but I hope I explained it well enough. Re: [meteorite-list] Geoff's book
Dear Walter and Laurence: Thank you for the kind compliments about my new book. As some of you know, I have been a writer for many years and my published work has focused on meteoritics, paleontology, and the arts. While there are a number of excellent reference works on meteorites by our late friend Richard Norton and others, until recently there was no guide to meteorite hunting. One of the most frequent requests we receive as a result of the Meteorite Men series is: I want to look for meteorites, how do I start? My book is an attempt to answer that question. As Walter noted, this is primarily an entry-level work, and you old pros will already be familiar with much of its content. To widen the appeal, I hired my very talented photographer, Suzanne Morrison to take a series of studio photographs to illustrate the characteristics of fusion crust, orientation, chondrules, flow lines, regmaglypts, etc., and the book is also peppered with numerous photos from both seasons of Meteorite Men, as well as various anecdotes from the road. Our good friends Nancy and Dr. Larry Lebofsky, late of Meteorite magazine, did a superb job of editing the book, and I was honored to have an introduction written for me by Chris Cokinos, of The Fallen Sky fame. Meteorite Hunting can be ordered online at: http://meteoritehunters.tv If any List members would like their copy signed and/or personalized, just let me know and I will be happy to oblige. Hello Martin, Chris, and Listers I did a search on Google books and I found a copy of the affidavit from the Valera meteorite fall in the Natural History Auction Sunday June 8 th 2008 catolog. Re: [meteorite-list] Valera affidavit and 1cm cubes
Hi all about Valera, and Greg about the 1cm cubes, Yes, Google is the best to look for anything these days. I was looking Valera up and then saw Shawn's post with it. Believe me, google saves everything searched, that's why if you google your name or your web site or any user ID you've ever had, it's on google. Kind of an invasion of privacy I think, but that's the world we live in. Greg, I have some of the cubes, but unfortunately these don't have the 1cm on them. I'd rather have those too! They are Drake Damerau cubes and are made from 6061T6 aluminum, and anodized to a military grade spec. The letters are filled in with baked enamel. He told me last year that he saw the one he sold Steve Arnold on “Meteor Hunters” one day last Spring 2010. He thought it was the “Tucson Meteorite” episode. They showed a picture of his find next to one of his cubes. You can always tell it’s a “Drake Cube” when you see the dot next to the N. All other cubes made have a small line next to the N, not the dot. I'll send you a photo of mine, and you can always write Drake if you want. I just wrote him a few minutes ago to ask him if he has made any with the 1cm on them. P.S. is anyone else noticing so many of the posts being incredibly long. I think maybe some are replying from the list email instead of a separate new email which is what we should use. It's pure hell trying to read these on a cell phone when you have to scroll through the whole list of 20 posts and some with the entire previous 20 posts attached under their one post. Always send a new email page with the subject and attach the post you are talking about if you want. It's much easier on all then to have the entire list of all posts to scroll down through. All the best! Re: [meteorite-list] A chance photo discovery
Hello, list, If you write the Odessa meteor crater museum and ask if they still have a copy of the: Occasional Papers of the Strecker Museum The Odessa meteor craters and their geological implications written by Glen L Evans and Charles E Mear. There are numerous good drawings and many BW photos of the crator and the surounding area in the 50 page booklet. I used to live just 2 1/2 miles from the crator and have personally been inside each of the five crators. It's not as awesome as The Barrienger crator, but still has a good deal of awe as you stand in bottom of the main crator and look out. In trench D there was found a prehistoric horse tooth. this was before WWII. Sometime during the war, it was missplaced and has since been lost. My book is available, if needed for research. [meteorite-list] You will 'Melt' for this... AD
Dear List, You will 'Melt' for this! A taste from one of the goodies I picked from the Tucson Show. Here are the new Impact Melt Breccia specimens from an unclassified NWA I purchased. Can you say, Swt?! I normally do not offer special meteorites before classification, but this one just got me so excited that I could not wait. One problem, I have to choose one of these slices to cut down and submit a piece for the type sample! I think I will see what is left after offering them and what ever is left, will become the sample for the lab! That, or the 79.69g slices will make for a good candidate. I received the pieces back from Marlin a couple days ago and they just won't sit still here any longer! While there was nearly a 30% cutting and polishing loss, it was well worth it to expose this fantastic matrix! Re: [meteorite-list] Udei Station vs. NWA 4024 winonaite types
G'day Mike, I asked this very same question about a year ago and got some very good replies. Here are some of them: http://six.pairlist.net/pipermail/meteorite-list/2010-March/062685.html http://six.pairlist.net/pipermail/meteorite-list/2010-March/062688.html http://six.pairlist.net/pipermail/meteorite-list/2010-March/062729.html http://six.pairlist.net/pipermail/meteorite-list/2010-March/062736.html Bernd summarised with the following: It is likely that the winonaites cooled faster than the silicates in IAB irons, which may have been more deeply buried. This is supported by the metallo- graphic cooling rates of Winona, 200°C/Myr, and IAB irons, 10-50°C/Myr. So, maybe these metallographic cooling rates can help make a clear(er) distinction between the two: Silicated IAB's and winonaites.
