Re: [meteorite-list] Jeff Kuyken Finds his First Meteorite

2011-05-30 Thread Jeff Kuyken
Thanks to everyone for the congrats both on and off list. Much appreciated.
I'll be doing a full write-up with pics in the next couple of months.

This is a great post Brian. I actually found the antler in the first couple
of days. Then Mike mentioned that he had found the same one the year before.
And now you too! We were saying how it's now become the official Whitecourt
community antler! ;-)

I actually took a pic of the find too:

Ohhh... it's still there ready for the next hunters. Good thing too...
quarantine/customs checked my bags with dogs when I came back to Aus! :-O

Cheers,

Jeff

Jeff, if you are still up there at Whitecourt there is a deer antler
(souvenir?)
to go along with your first find.

I use a dremel diamond wheel when I am in the field from my truck and it

Re: [meteorite-list] Taking a look inside a chondrite meteorite

2011-05-30 Thread Count Deiro
That's a great tip, Jim. I never thought to use the side of one of the wheels
on my bench grinder when that was all I owned. Mine bench grinder does have
side guards that would have to be unscrewed and dismounted. Now I have a four
station wet/dry cabachon maker that has a six inch flat polishing wheel on one
side that you can stick different diamond grit discs on. I like it because
there's no mandrel in the middle and it's easy to change the discs.

Adam Hupe' turned me on to these neat diamond grit hard sponge sanding blocks
used in finishing granite counter tops and auto body work. You can buy a set of
different grits from 80 to 2000 on E-Bay for around $100.00 and they can be
used wet, or dry.

You can also buy an inexpensive portable (about the size of a shoe box) DC to
AC Inverter to clip to your vehicle battery to power your grinder, or Dremel in
the field. Must run the engine to get the amps neeeded.

Best regards to all,

Yes, most Moroccan dealers fail to realize the world economy is in the worst
downturn since the great depression and barely showing signs of recovery. For
example, they are stilling asking $10.00/gram for Eucrites when only $5.00/gram
can be realized on eBay, even after suffering a cutting loss. In the end, they
will find out how tough a market it really is. No amount of hype or press will
bring the prices up on the open market. It is a supply and demand issue. Maybe
once the stockpiles which are dwindling are exhausted the prices will go back
up. Until then, I will be purchasing older U.S. finds which are priced most
reasonably at a few dollars per gram.

John Steinbeck: Travels with Charley

There are customs, attitudes, myths and directions and changes that seem to be
part of the structure of America. And I propose to discuss them as they were
first thrust on my attention. While these discussions go on you are to imagine
me bowling along on some little road or pulled up behind a bridge, or cooking a
big pot of lima beans and salt pork. And the first of these has to do with
hunting.

I could not have escaped hunting if I had wanted, for open seasons spangle the
autumn. We have inherited many attitudes from our recent ancestors, who
wrestled this continent as Jacob wrestled the angel, and the pioneers won. From
them we take a belief that every American is a natural born hunter. And every
fall a great number of men set out to prove that without talent, training,
knowledge, or practice they are dead shots with rifle or shotgun. The results
are horrid. [. . .]

It isnt hunger that drives millions of armed American males to forests and
hills every autumn, as the high incidence of heart failure among the hunters
will prove. Somehow the hunting process has to do with masculinity, but I don't
quite know how. I know there are any number of good and efficient hunters who
know what they are doing; but many more are overweight gentlemen, primed with
whisky and armed with high-powered rifles.

They shoot at anything that moves or looks as though it might, and their
success in killing one another may well prevent a population explosion. If the
casualties were limited to their own kind there would be no problem, but the
slaughter of cows, pigs, farmers, dogs, and highway signs makes autumn a
dangerous seasons in which to travel.

A farmer in upper New York State painted the word cow in big black letters on
both sides of his white bossy but the hunters shot it anyway. In Wisconsin, as
I was driving through, a hunter shot his own guide between the shoulder blades.
[. . .]

With the rolling barrage going on in Maine, of course I was afraid for myself.
Four automobiles were hit on opening day, but mainly I was afraid for Charley.
I know that a poodle looks very like a buck deer to one of these hunters, and I
had to find some way of protecting him. In Rocinante there was a box of red
Kleenex that someone had given me as a present. I wrapped Charley's tail in red
Kleenex and fastened it with rubber bands.

Every morning I renewed his flag, and he wore it all the way west while bullets
whined and whistled around us. This was not intended to be funny. The radios
warned against carrying a white handkerchief. Too many hunters seeing a flash
of white have taken it for the tail of a running deer and cured a head cold
with a single shot.

But this legacy of the frontiersman is not a new thing. When I was a child on
the ranch near Salinas, California, we had a Chinese cook who regularly made a
modest good thing of it. On a ridge not far away, a sycamore log lay on its
side supported by two of its broken branches. Lees attention was drawn to this
speckled fawn-colored chunk of wood by the bullet holes in it. He nailed a pair
of horns to it and then retired to his cabin until deer season was over. Then
he harvested the lead from the old tree trunk. Some seasons he got fifty or
sixty pounds of it. It wasnt a fortune but it was wages.

After a couple of years, when the tree was completely shot away, Lee replaced
it with four gunny sacks of sand and the same antlers. Then it was even easier
to harvest his crop.

If he had put out fifty of them it would have been a fortune, but Lee was a
humble man who didnt care for mass production.

Re: [meteorite-list] Moroccan business meteorite is suffering

2011-05-30 Thread Greg Hupé

Hello Said and All,

Typically when there is more competition, the prices are driven down. In
this situation where prices are going up, I would suggest that this is
another sign that supply is indeed drying up in the Sahara. The fact that
the Algerian finders are going direct is not unlike Moroccan dealers going
direct to collectors a few years ago, they simply want to larger piece of
the pie and no longer want to go through the old fashioned
Finder-Broker-Wholesaler-Retailer model that used to work.

With technology advancing so much from the 'early days' of the Moroccan
'gold rush' some 15-20 years ago, it is a simple matter of getting online,
post an ad on this List, Facebook or emailing people directly, everyone has
some sort of device that allows them to 'connect' with buyers. I remember
when I was amazed 12 years ago when I was on the border of Morocco and
Algeria going from Berber tent to tent asking if any of the nomads had
stones for sale -- the amazing part was that one of the nomads pulled a cell
phone out from under his robe and made a call from way out in the middle of
the desert! Turns out that countries like Morocco and others have had a far
more advanced communication infrastructure compared to the US at the time.
It was only a matter of time before the finders got 'connected' and grabbed
their piece of that pie.

The one aspect that Said was referring to that I do not like is that some of
these newer 'brokers' make claims they own particular stones they offer
around the world, where in fact as Said points out, they have ZERO financial
risk involved. I suppose they are smarter than the rest of us old timers who
still believe in the archaic 'cash-n-carry' mentality!

Sounds like a new Market Trends article Capt. Blood! ;-)

Best Regards,
Greg

Re: [meteorite-list] Taking a look inside a chondrite meteorite

2011-05-30 Thread Jim Wooddell
Hi Count!
I have used the Dremel from the truck for a few years and it sure has
come in handy.
I have an inverter mounted in my truck that easily handles the Dremel
and it also handles a coffee pot where I can make coffee or heat up
water or whatever. The inverter is a solid investment in mobility.
I have a green wheel on a Darex grinder at home and with the cost of
savings (comparing to a diamond wheel, it does chondrites very good
and you just have to square it up now and then. I can buty several of
these for the price of one diamond wheel. I do have a horizontal
Diamond lap but seldom ever use it. I normally end up finishing with
wet/dry sand paper to about 1000 grit (in steps of course). I find it
soothing doing this by hand.
All toys are fun though, eh?

That's a great tip, Jim. I never thought to use the side of one of the wheels
on my bench grinder when that was all I owned. Mine bench grinder does have
side guards that would have to be unscrewed and dismounted. Now I have a four
station wet/dry cabachon maker that has a six inch flat polishing wheel on
one side that you can stick different diamond grit discs on. I like it
because there's no mandrel in the middle and it's easy to change the discs.

Adam Hupe' turned me on to these neat diamond grit hard sponge sanding blocks
used in finishing granite counter tops and auto body work. You can buy a set
of different grits from 80 to 2000 on E-Bay for around $100.00 and they can
 be used wet, or dry.

You can also buy an inexpensive portable (about the size of a shoe box) DC to
AC Inverter to clip to your vehicle battery to power your grinder, or Dremel
in the field. Must run the engine to get the amps neeeded.

My favorite way of windowing potential meteorites is with a bench grinder.
Using the side of the wheel will leave a nice flat and smooth surface in
about a  second. To bad they don't make them to run off a 12 volt automotive
outlet for  use in the field.

Hello  Chris,

I use a dremel diamond wheel when I am in the field from my truck  and it
works perfect. Just have to be careful on the amount of  pressure
applied.

You can see me using them in my YouTube  videosfrom my website

This is all very depressing news.
It sounds to me like you are all right.
I think Adam also pointed out in a recent post that the media. Specifically the
NYT article along with a bunch of Scientist's from around the world have done a
very good job of helping drive down the prices in the US of meteorites. One was
even quoted as saying It's a black market.
Well.
when they own the information, they can bend it all they want (John Mayer).

Blood! ;-)

 Hi all,
the issue about the shortness of the material and also the high prices of
meteorites in morocco has nothing to do with the world economy..
this is becuase even there was bad economy there were some meteorites that
were sold at a very good price,,,This is not our issue ..
the problem we try to talk about is the reasons why prices of meteorites are
 going up recently in Morocco..
Not the Moroccan dealers who are the responsible of this, but the prices are
way too high from the native suppliers who are Algerians or few Moroccan
nomads ...US AND European and Moroccan dealers are complaining about this
not only US or European dealers because we,moroccans, buy stones also from
other people..We are all the same like you all in the market...
Lets go back to the reasons why the prices are too high,,
In Morocco we have some brokers who, have nothing to do with this
business, jumped on the market and destroying the proper manner of buying and
sellling ..They got on contact with some algerian via moroccan nomads and
made a bad competition and they sometimes offered high prices to Algerian
trying to overdominate the market and they make the suppliers or the finder
keep dreaming with crazy prices ..
 cheers

Yes, most Moroccan dealers fail to realize the world economy is in the
worst
downturn since the great depression and barely showing signs of recovery.
For
example, they are stilling asking $10.00/gram for Eucrites when only
$5.00/gram
can be realized on eBay, even after suffering a cutting loss. In the end,
they
will find out how tough a market it really is. No amount of hype or press
will
bring the prices up on the open market. It is a supply and demand issue.
Maybe
once the stockpiles which are dwindling are exhausted the prices will go
back
up. Until then, I will be purchasing older U.S. finds which are priced
most

reasonably at a few dollars per gram.

Happy Hunting,

Adam

Dear All,

I suspect the reason the prices are higher is that supplies are drying up
because of various conflicts (Political or Otherwise) affecting the ability
to go find them. Border controls are tighter getting in/out, now affecting
the movements of locals (Nomads/Berbers). For what it's worth, that's my
take on it.

Dear All,
yes prices are too high now...
And worst is that Maroccan dealers ask much more than US or European dealers
can sell here.

Interesting will be to see this year prices in Ensisheim.
