Steve,

Regarding your ridiculous “High Noon” challenge – even though I was
not there YOU HAVE LOST!!

Does this look familiar   http://www.impactika.com/images/fake5000.jpg

Well IT SHOULD!!

I got this (along with 2 other samples) from the guy on 2000 Rd in
Delta you “hired” to cut it.

As I do very little on line (and even less on E-Bay), I really did not
know what rock all of the NWA 5000 supposed pairing fuss was about. I
happened to bump into this gem
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Colorado-Lunar-Meteorite-/120781889556?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item1c1f296014
while looking for something else in the E-Bay listings today. I
immediately recognized it as something I already had a piece of!

I have already analyzed this stuff and found it to be wholly
terrestrial (as were the other two specimens you gave the rock shop).
I finally got to analyze a nice specimen of the real NWA 5000 in
Denver last week (which, in my opinion does not look much like your
stuff at all, aside from the breccia texture. But then what do I know,
I only have a bachelor’s in geology with minors in math, physics and
chemistry and a meteorite dealer for 25 years now but YOU have an
Audio Visual degree!).

Any way: HERE ARE THE RESULTS: I ran both of these in two different
modes for a better element coverage. Soils mode (the one that is best
for accurately picking up very low level stuff in rocks and dirt), is
not set up to see Si or Mg in my machine, so I use “Mining” mode to
see those often important elements (among others). This mode is not as
accurate in the numbers reported as soils, but it gives a pretty darn
good ball-park number (this really does not matter when comparing two
rocks run on the same machine. Any errors in calibration accuracy will
be the same in the other sample, so they ‘wash out” so to speak). I
have also converted the numbers all to ppm, since this is what you
seem to be so stuck on. I usually use % as that is a little easier for
the average person to understand (for those of you that are curious
1ppm = .0001% or 1gram in a metric ton (1000kg, 2200pounds).

“SOILS” MODE:

NWA (5000)
Ba (160), Ca (143,087), Cl (4775), Co (553), Cr (544), Cu (52), Fe
(37,941), I (570), K (1512), Mn (476), Rb (3), S (1429), Sr (178), Ti
(1619), Zn (23), Zr (87)

YOUR “Pairing”
Ba (580), Ca (11,464), Cl (10,064), Cu (59), Fe (6853), K (23,422), Mn
(99), Pb (19), Rb (64), S (964), Sr (714), Ti (1469), Zn (44), Zr
(169)

A quick look at this tells me that you have way too little Ca, Cr (you
had NONE of this critically important element in all meteorites in
this sample!), Fe, and Mn. You also have way to high Ba, K, and Sr --
all features common to many terrestrial (that is EARTH rocks, if you
don’t understand the lingo) materials.

“MINING” MODE: Note – LE is “light elements” This device cannot see
elements of atomic weight lighter than Mg. In rocks, this is usually O
(oxygen).

NWA (5000)
Al (154,940), Ca (131,430), Cd (200), Cr (850), Fe (45,800), LE
(334,220), Mg (43,300), Mn (890), Ni (50), Sb (320), Si (285,060), Sn
(220), Ti (2110), V (260), Zr (87)

YOUR “pairing”
Al (89,390), Ca (8270), Cd (194), Cr (190), Fe (13,570), LE (409,990),
Mn (290), P (600), Pb (13), S (500), Sb (300), Si (472, 980), Sn
(210), Ti (2780), V (500), Zr (218)

A quick look at these numbers shows that your sample is to high in LE
(oxygen), Si and Zr. Your sample is to low in Al, Ca, Cr, and Fe.

The high Si linked with a high LE number tells me that you have a lot
of quartz in this rock and hints that it is indeed a rhyolite lava
breccia. These type lavas are VERY common to the San Juan Volcanic
field just south of you. Much of those mountains you see to your south
are the remnants of huge, explosive volcanoes. The high Si content
makes these lavas thick and sticky and the volcanoes they are
associated with particularly violent in their eruptions – hence the
breccia structure in your rock (though, admittedly, it could be from a
fault zone but it looks more typical Rhyolite breccia to me).

So Steve, you have lost!

I personally think that, since you demanded us all to quit and write
apology letters, you should be required to completely remove yourself
from the

[meteorite-list] Crater in Okotoks?

2011-09-24 Thread MexicoDoug

Don't know about the source but it sounds like fun!

http://www.itwire.com/science-news/space/49989-uars-is-down-in-south-western-canada

Locals in Okotoks (approximately 30km south of Calgary) are reporting
the discovery of wreckage from the recently downed UARS (Upper
Atmosphere Research Satellite), including a large piece that left a
substantial crater and early estimates suggest a debris field extending
to the north east of there.

In addition, apparent video showing pieces of the burning satellite
passing over Okotoks is already on YouTube

The video from Okotoks, Alberta, looks suspect. I have the same feeling as some
other people: a series of Chinese lanterns, not UARS debris. There is very
little evolution in the series of dots.

Could be wrong of course, but I have serious doubts about this report.

Re: [meteorite-list] UARS -- Alberta or Pacific fall?

2011-09-24 Thread Bob King
Marco and all,
So where did UARS come down? Was it southern Alberta or over the
Pacific. The NASA update says the latter.

Rob, others,

The video from Okotoks, Alberta, looks suspect. I have the same feeling as some
other people: a series of Chinese lanterns, not UARS debris. There is very
little evolution in the series of dots.

Could be wrong of course, but I have serious doubts about this report.

[meteorite-list] Named masses

2011-09-24 Thread Jeff Grossman

All,

I'm compiling a list of all meteorites that have named masses. The two
well-known examples are Cape York and Campo del Cielo, which each have
many large pieces that are known by informal names, e.g., Ahnighito (CY)
and El Patio (CdC).

How many others can people come up with? This is a crowdsourcing
exercise for the MetBull database, where I'd like to keep track of such
names. I already have a long list of synonyms, but most of these are
not the names of masses; they are alternate names and spellings for the
meteorite itself (if you'd like to scan them to see if you can spot any
mass names, here is the long list:
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/MetBullSynonyms.php).

What I need are:

Meteorite name; mass name; weight; source of information; optional
descriptive text

Thanks to all who can help!

Jeff

p.s. I think I have most of the CdC and CY names already compiled.

[meteorite-list] [New] Kenya Greenhouse Hammer Stone Kits Fragments - AD

2011-09-24 Thread Greg Hupé

Dear List,

I made more kits after the successful announcement of my latest project
three weeks ago, the Mwana Wikio Greenhouse Hammer Stone Kits from the July
16, 2011
meteorite fall in the Thika District of Kenya. These kits include a fragment
from the Greenhouse 001 or 002 stones along with a piece of greenhouse
roof material from which these stones struck.

In addition to the kits, I have several fragments from both greenhouse
hammer stones listed after the kits below. If you are interested in any of
these, please email me Off-List for a price list. I hope you enjoy these as
much as I have creating them!

illustrate front back):

Re: [meteorite-list] LOOKING FOR UPDATE ON METEOR INCIDENT FROM BASKING RIDGE, NJ

2011-09-24 Thread drtanuki
Dear List, A newspaper has contacted me for a followup story about the New
Jersey Mystery Crater Event on Basking Ridge, NJ. Several of you went there
personally to have a look at the crater. If you wish to help please email me
an email with you answers and I will forward your information to the writer;
thank you in advance.

 Original Story with photos:
  http://patch.com/A-ht0r

1)  Is there any way this could be a prank?

2) Do you know if a seismograph measured from the nearby
 William Annin
Middle School is a reliable source of data?

3) If it was a meteor, why were there no traces of a meteorite
 found or
no iron traces which are normally found in meteors?
 Supposedly the
meteor was supposed to be the size of a baseball.

4)Is it possible the meteor ricocheted off the lawn or another rock and
landed far away from the impact site?

 5) Are meteors and meteorite hits really uncommon?

6) Do you think this sounds like it could have really been a meteorite?

Please email me offlist with your comments. Thank you. Dirk RossTokyo

Hi Phil and List,

LOL! I assume it is a joke listing and the seller does not expect to sell
it.

However, the listing fee for a $400,000 BIN can't be cheap. It's an
expensive joke for the seller. I don't get it.

FWIW, if anyone is interested, I have an enchanted galaxy rutabaga for
sale. Contact me off-list if interested.

Best regards,

Re: [meteorite-list] UARS -- Alberta or Pacific fall?

2011-09-24 Thread MexicoDoug
Bob, Marco, all, Chris,

Now someone in Ottawa is getting into the act (picture of contrails?):

http://www.torontosun.com/2011/09/24/ottawa-resident-says-space-oddity-was-falling-satellite

Canada wants this one ;-)

Rumor is the video turned out to be lifted from another probably from
Oklahoma City and not a whole lot to do with the UARS. As for all the
hoopla about Alberta unless this is the world's biggest conspiracy, it
is sounding like a bunch of people progressively feeding and weaving a
tall tale (as in the episode The Omega Glory of Star Trek) until it
has little to do with the original.

From Calgary:
http://www.calgaryherald.com/sign+that+debris+from+falling+satellite+landed+Alta/5454240/story.html

If you take a moment to think about this, with all the amateur and
professional all-sky cameras and online communication, and folks
looking for the show, more original accounts would be showing up by
now. As for the crater story (also picked up by the Christian Science
Monitor), one wonders how it seems to have first shown up on the other
side of the world in Australia first...maybe where the pranksters were
having a lazy afternoon.

Kindest wishes
Doug

Marco and all,
So where did UARS come down? Was it southern Alberta or over the
Pacific. The NASA update says the latter.

Rob, others,

The video from Okotoks, Alberta, looks suspect. I have the same feeling
as some
other people: a series of Chinese lanterns, not UARS debris. There is
very
little evolution in the series of dots.

Could be wrong of course, but I have serious doubts about this report.

I would like to say the Monnig collection at TCU is an awesome display. Dr.
Art Elhmann is one of the nicest men you could ever meet and gave me a
personal tour of the collection. I too also have a couple of nice meteorites
in my collection with the Monnig provenance. I have dedicated a page on my

Ehlmann for his kindness.
Here is the link.

compliment and thanks for sharing. Although not being specialized on
historic falls I'm glad enough to keep a small Winona fragment with Monnig
provenance in my collection.

Oscar E. Monnig (1902-1999), lawyer by training, worked his entire life in
his family's wholesale and retail business in Fort Worth, Texas, to
finally become CEO of the same company. He began collecting meteorites in
the early 1930s. Autodidact, he amassed one of the most important private
meteorite collections of the 20th century and played a significant role in
the Meteoritics community. On his spare time, he helped recover new
meteorite falls and old finds, some of which may have been lost to science
without his thorough investigations...

Sure, a piece of sheet metal and things much thicker can rip after the
ablative stage but before free fall as things rip apart in dense
atmosphere!

Even irons can get sharp shrapnel.

But the warning does sound a bit lame. Guess the radioactive wait for
the men in black excuse doesn't work any more.

[meteorite-list] 1 in 3200 odds of human impact (help)

2011-09-24 Thread MexicoDoug

Hi listers

I'm very suspicious of this widely quoted 1 in 3200 that is being
passed off as a scientific number by NASA.

Not 1:3000, nor between 1:1000 to 1:10,000: but 1:3200.

This foolishly precise assertation, which if you've read The Little
Prince you immediately suspect it is overstated due to the author's
calculations 70 years ago there...where a similar calculation is
actually done ...

Average cross sectional area of a person? (Depends if it is in the
morning when everyone is praying, I guess, or in the afternoon when
everyone is running out of work)...let's say:

Cross section per person:18 inches by 18 inches (1.5 x 1.5 sq. feet)
World population: 6.964 X 10^9 living souls
World Area: 196,939,900 sq miles

Calculations:

* Cross section per person = 2.5 sq. feet

* current world population occupies 624.3 square miles
(a wee bit bigger than Guam, and smaller than Singapore)

* people that could fit on Earth's surface: 2,196,000,000,000,000 (2.2
million X 10^9)

* Fraction of Earth's surface that's people  = 6.96 / (2,196,000)  =
0.0317
= People occupy *ONLY* 3.2 parts per million (3.2 ppm) of the earth's
surface

So, saving rounding till the end, each piece of UARS actually has a
1/315,457 chance of falling on people (1/0.0317).
In rounded numbers, that's about 1:320,000 per fragment == 26
fragments approximately 1:12,000 chance.

I guess if you are American you need more space than if you are
Indonesian, and changing it to a 18 inches X 17 inches would change the
result by 6% ie, if 3200 were right for 18X18 it would now be about
1:3000, and that is one of so many assumptions making the 3200 number a
total joke of fake scientific confidence. If you gave everyone a
square yard ((91.4 cm)^2) instead, it would be in the 3000 range.

But here are the defficiencies I think of looking at it this way:

* this looks at the whole world vs. the limited satellite trace. A
true measurement would do a little calculus along the path considering
the population density and the probability of earlier or later entry
which could change probabilities by an order of magnitude easily.

* I think what I did would work for 26 darts, but not hunks of
significant size compared to a person's area unit.

* Finally there is the Sylacauga effect for bouncing material that will
affect things another factor of 2, 3, 4 who knows...

There must be a half dozen other complicating factors to do this right.
Does anyone know what has been considered to arrive at the bogusly
precise 3200-1 odds being fed to us?

Love to hear any improvements on the above model (if you can call it a
model) which I got the 1:12,000 as a streaming (unverified) starting
point ...

Kindest wishes
Doug

Hi listers

I'm very suspicious of this widely quoted 1 in 3200 that is being passed
off as a scientific number by NASA.

Not 1:3000, nor between 1:1000 to 1:10,000: but 1:3200.

This foolishly precise assertation, which if you've read The Little
Prince you immediately suspect it is overstated due to the author's
calculations 70 years ago there...where a similar calculation is actually
done ...

Average cross sectional area of a person? (Depends if it is in the morning
when everyone is praying, I guess, or in the afternoon when everyone is
running out of work)...let's say:

Cross section per person:18 inches by 18 inches (1.5 x 1.5 sq. feet)
World population: 6.964 X 10^9 living souls
World Area: 196,939,900 sq miles

Calculations:

* Cross section per person = 2.5 sq. feet

* current world population occupies 624.3 square miles
(a wee bit bigger than Guam, and smaller than Singapore)

* people that could fit on Earth's surface: 2,196,000,000,000,000 (2.2
million X 10^9)

* Fraction of Earth's surface that's people  = 6.96 / (2,196,000)  =
0.0317
= People occupy *ONLY* 3.2 parts per million (3.2 ppm) of the earth's
surface
