Re: [meteorite-list] [3] West Virginia / Maryland Event
(Oct 4 Event) According to Allegany County 9-1-1 officials at about 4:30 this morning folks throughout Western Maryland awoke to a sonic boom created by a meteorite that moved through the area. 12 calls were made to Allegany County 9-1-1 beginning at about 4:22 am from Frostburg to Oldtown. Callers reported hearing a loud boom and seeing a blue or green light flashing through the sky. County 9-1-1 officials from around West Virginia claimed they received calls about feeling the sonic boom from Carpendale, Capn Bridge and Wardensville. Early reports are that the meteorite may have allegedly crashed somewhere in Virginia. But Virginia Emergency Management officials say they have had no meteorite reports. NASA officials have been unable to confirm the reports at this point. -Original Message- From: MexicoDoug mexicod...@aim.com To: meteorite-list meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Sat, Oct 8, 2011 2:05 am Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] West Virginia / Maryland Event Check the line going North-east from around Petersburg WV to Chaneysville PA ... [meteorite-list] LODRAN - main mass
Dear list members, David Weir writes on his website that the main mass (690 g) of Lodran from the Museum of Geology in Calcutta (meteorite collection now probably in Indian Museum, Calcutta ??) has been missing for some years. Does anyone have additional information? Was it stolen or lost? Has it been found again? If it is really lost forever, there is not much Lodran left: 69g NHM Vienna, 56 g + 25 g in NHM London, 17g AMNH New York, 24,6 g USNM Washington, 11 g ASU, 5 g MfN Berlin, 2 g FMNH Chicago and a few micro fragments in private collections. (source: Catalogue of Meteorites (NHM London), 5th edition, 2000 and online NHM Mineralogy collection database) That's a mere 209.6 g left in Museum collections worldwide ... How much is 'curated' in private collections? Please let me know if you have any information. Thank you! Re: [meteorite-list] Draconid meteor shower - any reports yet?
Hi Bob, my esteemed meteorite buddy Matthias just reported here that skies were overcast in South Germany, but I heard that there were some clear areas over other parts of the country where observations could me made despite a disturbing nearly full moon. More on this will surely be reported soon, and a good place to have a look at in the meantime is this: http://www.imo.net/draconids2011 I was very lucky to see one single bright Draconid from my balcony in downtown Berlin this evening 11.39 local pm (UTC 21.39), just passing 4 to 5 degrees over the star Vega (A Lyr) for two seconds with about mag +2.8, which is one of the few brighter ones. I looked for more, but did not see more meteors, as this is a central location of a big town, with all the city lights around, and the moon interfering in addition. But it should have been sort of a good show out on the countryside Best, Alex Berlin/Germany Original-Nachricht Datum: Sat, 8 Oct 2011 18:19:14 -0500 Von: Bob King nightsk...@gmail.com An: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Betreff: [meteorite-list] Draconid meteor shower - any reports yet? [meteorite-list] AD : Big New Specimens (not micros), Rare Types CR2/CK5/CO3.0, Falls, Oriented, Lots of New Specimens!
Greetings Listees and Collectors! Big News! This is one of my once a year BIG sales with BIG specimens and one of a kind specimens. I did some big trades with a fellow dealer or two, and I acquired some top-shelf specimens that are much bigger and nicer than what I usually carry. This is the last batch of collector-grade, large specimens I will be getting before Christmas - barring unforseen circumstances. A few of these specimens are really hard to find and this may be your last chance to get a few of these before they are absorbed into collections elsewhere - especially the NWA 6026 (CK5) and a few others. I restocked on lunar material for Moon Rock displays - a very limited quantity of two hard to get lunar meteorites. Take a look at the list below. To save myself a case of carpal tunnel from typing, the links are presented below and each leads to a detailed description and photos. These are NICE specimens and don't miss your chance. These are going to sell quick and a couple of them sold while I was listing them. (It's take me all afternoon and evening to list this many new specimens) As always, you can use your metlist coupon code at checkout for 20% off your entire purchase. If the code or checkout gives you any problems, contact me via email - meteoritem...@gmail.com Without further ado, here is the list of NEW stuff.
