Russian Mars mission halted by glitch in low Earth orbit
BY STEPHEN CLARK
SPACEFLIGHT NOW
November 8, 2011

Russia's Phobos-Grunt mission, an audacious effort to retrieve samples
from a Martian moon, is stranded in low Earth orbit following a
successful liftoff Tuesday from Kazakhstan, according to Russian reports.

Two rocket burns were supposed to propel the massive probe on a course
toward Mars late Tuesday, but indications are the engine firings did not
occur, according to Vladimir Popovkin, head of the Russian space agency.

The revelation came after a successful blastoff on top of a Zenit 2FG
rocket at 2016 GMT (3:16 p.m. EST). Phobos-Grunt and an attached rocket
pack separated from the booster about 11 minutes later.

Radar trackers did not detect Phobos-Grunt in the expected orbit after
it was supposed to fire engines nearly three hours after liftoff. The
burn was timed to occur over South America and out of range of Russian
ground stations, which are limited in coverage over Europe and Asia.

We had a difficult night, and we could not locate the spacecraft for a
long time, Popovkin said in a report by the Russian Novosti news
agency. We now have its position. It was found that the propulsion
system failed. There was neither the first nor the second burn.

Popovkin said the spacecraft may not have issued the command for a
specially-designed rocket system to ignite, adding such an issue was
foreseen during the development of the mission. He also suggested there
could have been a problem with the craft's orientation and switching
from sun-tracking to star-tracking, according to the Novosti report.

A subsequent story in Novosti late Tuesday night said such a problem
could be due to software or hardware issues. If it was a software
glitch, the odds of recovery are good, while a hardware anomaly could
have more dire consequences for the mission, the report said.

A senior manager at NASA's Deep Space Network said there is no agreement
between the United States and Russia for tracking of the launch sequence
with the network's powerful communications antennas around the world.
The antennas could be made available if Russia requests aid, the
mananger said.

Engineers are evaluating whether the spacecraft can be recovered in time
to upload fresh commands to attempt more engine burns to aim for Mars.
According to Popovkin, ground teams have three days to try to devise a
new program for the burns toward Mars.

Because it didn't fire its engines as scheduled Tuesday, Phobos-Grunt
still has a full load of propellant to get to Mars if engineers can find
the cause of the problem and fix it.

In a report by the Interfax news agency, Popovkin said he would not
describe the mission as a failure yet.

After initially reaching an elliptical orbit a few hundred miles above
Earth, Phobos-Grunt was supposed to fire its main propulsion unit twice,
first to raise its altitude, then to inject itself on a trajectory to
escape Earth.

Neither burn occurred, meaning the spacecraft is probably still circling
Earth at altitudes between 120 miles and 215 miles. The orbit was
supposed to have an inclination angle of about 51.4 degrees to the equator.

The first rocket firing was supposed to raise Phobos-Grunt's maximum
altitude to more than 2,500 miles. A second burn would have accelerated
the spacecraft beyond escape velocity, the relative speed needed to
overcome the influence of Earth's gravity and head for Mars.

Phobos-Grunt should have been on an Mars-bound trajectory at 0120 GMT
(8:20 p.m. EST).

The $163 million mission's propulsion system is derived from the Fregat
upper stage, a hydrazine-fueled space tug that often places satellites
in high-altitude orbits above Earth. The Fregat has never been used on
an interplanetary mission before.

The Fregat-based main propulsion unit was supposed to stay attached to
Phobos-Grunt for course correct maneuvers and a critical braking burn to
arrive in orbit around Mars in October 2012.

After getting to Mars, the probe was supposed to jettison the propulsion
unit and deploy China's Yinghuo 1 orbiter, which rides piggyback on
Phobos-Grunt for the journey there.

By early 2013, Phobos-Grunt was scheduled to approach Phobos and study
the moon with remote sensing instruments, giving Russian scientists data
needed to select a landing site.

Using a laser altimeter and radar navigation sensor, Phobos-Grunt was
expected to descend to the surface of the moon in February 2013. Because
of the weak gravity field at Phobos, the probe must make a gentle
landing with little margin for error.

After scooping up rock with a robot arm and placing the samples in a
canister, Phobos-Grunt's return capsule was designed to depart the moon
and target a landing back on Earth in August 2014 with nearly a
half-pound of soil.

After sending its samples back to Earth, Phobos-Grunt's core spacecraft
was supposed to remain on Phobos for

[meteorite-list] AD: Special: The new, fresh and very peculiar Martian meteorite NWA 6963

2011-11-09 Thread Chladnis Heirs

Dear collectors,

Today we have once again the especial pleasure to continue our serial of new
finds
of unpaired and extraordinary Martian meteorites.

It's about the most recent Martian recovery of this year, which has found
its way already as NWA 6963 into the Meteoritical Bulletin.

Again it is an unusually fresh material. NWA 6963 owns a very good
glossy-black fusion crust and the interior presents itself to be absolutely
unaltered by terrestrial weathering.
What is remarkable about NWA 6963 is that it doesn't belong to the olivine-
and olivine-orthopyroxene-phyric main group, but that we have here a basalt,
which resembles, if anything, Shergotty.

Already the first long- and eagerly awaited cut revealed the fantastic
texture of this Mars rock.
The crystallization pattern consist of a a dense and angular lattice of
broad spindles and bars, much more distinctly and clearer pronounced than
that one
of Zagami or Shergotty, of which some of you might feel reminded of.
And other than these, which are gray, does NWA 6963 attend upon us with an
accented greenish tint,
which turns that shergottite into an acutely aesthetical delight.

Classified was NWA 6963 this time by Dr. Carl Agee at the university of New
Mexico.
NWA 6963 is highly shocked, so that the plagioclase is completely
transformed into maskelynite.
The bulk composition is 60% pyroxene, 35% maskelynite, 2% ulvöspinel.
Additionally it contains melt pockets with traces of merrillite, pyrrhotite
and chlorapatite.
Of course no abstracts are on hand yet, according to reports the composition
of the pyroxene shall be very similar to that of Shergotty, and hearsay
tells,
that the bulk chemistry could point also in the direction of NWA 480/1460.

Therefore a lot of research is still to do and with that NWA 6963 the
scientist certainly will be occupied for quite a while, like it was
with the previous, each for its own very special Martian meteorites, where
we had the possibility to introduce them here on the list,
and so we can look forward to thrilling results and publications still to
come!

Here you are now.
All specimens down to 1.6g do have minimum one fully fusion-crusted edge.
The smaller ones sometimes and here and there a few specks of crust.
Note also, that this time, seen the news value, the freshness and the
specialty of that amazing material among the other Martians and regarding
the overall price level of the Martians of the last 2 years,
we kept the offer tempting:

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Central Flashback

2011-11-09 Thread Bernd V. Pauli
Hi All,

When I started collecting meteorites seriously in the early eighties
(about thirty years ago), I purchased my first Allende specimens at
about 75 cents per gram and I had to pay about 38 cents per gram
for Nuevo Mercurios. Peekskill sold for about US $ 20-25 per gram.

The US $ was about 2.62 German Marks in those days (Apr 04, 1984).

In his Fall 1987 Meteorite List, David New offered Allende for about
$3.00 per gram (exchange rate: 1 US $ = 1.8093 DM, Sep 11, 1987).

David New, Sep 1991: (exchange rate: 1 US $ about 1.76-1.80 DM)

Allende without fusion crust ca. $ 4.50
Allende with fusion crust ca. $ 5.50-6.00

Michael Casper's Allende pieces in 1998:

- ca. $ 5/ g for a 1/2 individual with fusion crust and polished face.
- a complete individual: 7.547 kg @ $ 50 000 (about $ 6.60 / g).

Best wishes,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] Russia Trying To Salvage Phobos-Grunt Mission

2011-11-09 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.spaceflightnow.com/news/n/09phobosgrunt/

Russia trying to salvage Phobos-Grunt mission
BY STEPHEN CLARK
SPACEFLIGHT NOW
November 9, 2011

One day after a Russian Mars probe was left stranded in low Earth orbit,
engineers planned to begin trying to save the mission Wednesday in hopes
the problem was a relatively simple software glitch.

After launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on Tuesday, the
29,000-pound Phobos-Grunt spacecraft entered an orbit with a low point
of 128 miles and a high point of 216 miles. But the craft's propulsion
unit was supposed to fire twice later Tuesday night to raise its
altitude and inject the probe on a trajectory toward Mars.

Neither firing occurred, leaving Phobos-Grunt stuck in orbit.

Phobos-Grunt was orbiting out of range of Russian ground stations for
most of Wednesday, but its flight path was expected to pass over Russia
again beginning around 1900 GMT (2 p.m. EST).

Only then can Russian engineers begin to diagnose what caused Tuesday's
post-launch problems. Officials are hopeful they can trace the anomaly
to a software issue that could be solved with a reboot or patch.

Top Russian space managers said a hardware problem would pose more dire
consequences for the $163 million mission, according to news reports.

Vladimir Popovkin, head of the Russian space agency, said the engine
firing mishap could have been caused by a problem in the orientation of
the spacecraft or the probe's computer may not have sent an ignition
command on time.

Otherwise, the spacecraft was stable and in a known orbit, according to
Russian officials.

It was unclear if control teams would upload commands for the engine
burns Wednesday night, or if the next attempt to set course for Mars
would wait until another day.

The Russian space agency said they have two weeks to issue the commands
based on the spacecraft's orbital altitude and its energy supply. The
timeframe is different than the one initially stated by Popovkin, who
said engineers have three days to save the mission.

If Russia is unable to save the mission, the spacecraft would be subject
to atmospheric drag, lowering its altitude until it fell back to Earth.

Phobos-Grunt is more massive than NASA's Upper Atmospheric Research
Satellite, which re-entered Earth's atmosphere in late September. The
highly-publicized re-entry, which had a 1-in-3,200 chance of striking a
person, occurred over the Pacific Ocean.

A German scientific satellite fell to Earth in October with no reports
of damage to property.

Phobos-Grunt still carries a full load of toxic hydrazine and nitrogen
tetroxide propellant to reach Mars and enter orbit around the Red
Planet. The propellant potentially makes Phobos-Grunt a greater threat
to the public than either recent re-entry or the USA-193 spy satellite
that was shot down by U.S. missile in 2008 to avoid an uncontrolled fall
back to Earth.

U.S. government officials cited frozen hydrazine fuel in USA-193's fuel
tanks as the reason to worry about the satellite's uncontrolled
re-entry, leading the Bush administration to shoot down the spacecraft
before it could naturally decay from orbit.

Russian officials quoted in the RIA Novosti news agency said
Phobos-Grunt could remain in orbit for up to a month without a risk of
falling.

The Phobos-Grunt propulsion system is derived from the Fregat upper
stage, a hydrazine-fueled space tug that often places satellites in
high-altitude orbits above Earth.

After sending its samples back to Earth, Phobos-Grunt's core spacecraft
was supposed to remain on Phobos for a continued science mission for up
to a year.

2011-11-09 Thread Dave Gheesling
Great stuff indeed, Pete, as always from Dr. Korotev. Also enjoyed the
surprise Conception Junction appearance over the last two minutes. I don't
think Dr. Korotev mentioned it in the video, but Karl recently donated that
polished specimen to WUSTL...
All the best,
Dave

Hello all,

Everyone should check out Patrick's killer howardite NWA 6695. Those angular
contrasting pitch black CM2 inclusions are phenomenal!

Best,
