The Russia Today page has video of the light of the meteor throwing
moving shadows of buildings, in broad daylight.

There is a report of 100 people being injured, none seriously, and two
photos of a zinc factory (maybe a galvanizing factory) which was hit
and damaged.

This video shows the smoke trail:

More than 150 people have sought medical help in one of three Russian
regions hit by a meteorite shower on Friday, the Interior Ministry reported.
Dozens of people suffered cuts from broken glass as the meteorites
smashed windows in numerous buildings across the Chelyabinsk Region, but
“no-one suffered serious injuries,” the Interior Ministry said.

[meteorite-list] History changing meteorite fall

2013-02-15 Thread Robert Woolard
All,

I was off yesterday and had the H2 channel on in the background while taking
care of a few things around the house. The programming included six different
meteorite/comet-strike-themed one hour episodes, many describing the
consequences of a large impact on a populated area. Although we all have seen
these shows (probably several times) I know I still love to watch them.

Looks like there's no need for future programs to say what if anymore.
Although fortunately not THAT large of an event and NOT city-destroying nor
life-ending by any means, I'd say this fall has really brought home to people
just how real the potential danger is. This fall will almost certainly be
featured in all the future meteorite themed programs. Perhaps NOVA will do a
nice episode on it soon.

History has changed today. Although we don't seem to have any reports of a
person actually being struck by meteorite ( at least yet) we all will have to
change our talks and lectures about the damage and incidental injuries ( over
750 people at this point and climbing fast) that have occurred from a fall. And
if it is proven that someone WAS actually struck by a piece- well ..

I'd also hazard to guess that NASA and the Spaceguard type programs might see
some significant boosts in their financing from this?

Best,
Robert Woolard

I'm betting it's an Iron, Personally I don't think there's too much smoke,
(look at the classic Skihote Alin painting for example!)

What is strange is that in quite a few videos of the fireball there seems to be
some odd features what I can only describe as 'puffs of extra fast smoke'
spontaneously appearing almost like mini explosions along the trajectory as it
travels. Maybe these are just shock fronts or water vapour from the supersonic
trail, but ive not seem them before...

More than 150 people have sought medical help in one of three Russian
regions hit by a meteorite shower on Friday, the Interior Ministry
 reported.
Dozens of people suffered cuts from broken glass as the meteorites
smashed windows in numerous buildings across the Chelyabinsk Region, but
?no-one suffered serious injuries,? the Interior Ministry said.

I'm betting it's an Iron, Personally I don't think there's too much smoke,
(look at the classic Skihote Alin painting for example!)

What is strange is that in quite a few videos of the fireball there seems
to be some odd features what I can only describe as 'puffs of extra fast
smoke' spontaneously appearing almost like mini explosions along the
trajectory as it travels. Maybe these are just shock fronts or water
vapour from the supersonic trail, but ive not seem them before...

Hmm, but why there is double smoke trail ? Its unusual

Too slow? Marcin, this is an extremely fast entry actually. Not a chance of
space junk.
I am 99 sure this is massive iron meteorite. It splits into two pieces upon
entry, and those two pieces then disrupt a few seconds later.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Hits Central Russia, More Than 500 People Hurt

2013-02-15 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/15/us-russia-meteorite-idUSBRE91E05Z20130215

Meteorite hits central Russia, more than 500 people hurt
February 15, 2013

(Reuters) - More than 500 people were injured when a meteorite shot across the
sky
and exploded over central Russia on Friday, sending fireballs crashing to
Earth,
shattering windows and damaging buildings.

People heading to work in Chelyabinsk heard what sounded like an explosion, saw
a
bright light and then felt a shockwave according to a Reuters correspondent in
the
industrial city 950 miles east of Moscow.

A fireball blazed across the horizon, leaving a long white trail in its wake
which
could be seen as far as 125 miles away in Yekaterinburg. Car alarms went off,
windows
shattered and mobile phone networks were interrupted.

I was driving to work, it was quite dark, but it suddenly became as bright as
if it
was day, said Viktor Prokofiev, 36, a resident of Yekaterinburg in the Urals
Mountains.

I felt like I was blinded by headlights, he said.

No fatalities were reported but President Vladimir Putin, who was due to host
Finance
Ministry officials from the Group of 20 nations in Moscow, and Prime Minister
Dmitry
Medvedev were informed.

A local ministry official said such incidents were extremely
rare and Friday's events might have been linked to an asteroid the size
of an Olympic swimming pool due to pass Earth at a distance of 17,100
miles but this was not confirmed.

Russia's space agency Roscosmos said the meteorite was travelling at a speed of
19
miles per second and that such events were hard to predict. The Interior
Ministry
said the meteorite explosion had caused a sonic boom.

Russia's Emergencies Ministry said 514 people had sought medical help, mainly
for
light injuries caused by flying glass, and that 112 of those were kept in
hospital.
Search groups were set up to look for the remains of the meteorite.

There have never been any cases of meteorites breaking up at such a low level
over
Russia before, said Yuri Burenko, head of the Chelyabinsk branch of the
Emergencies
Ministry.

WINDOWS BREAK, FRAMES BUCKLE

Windows were shattered on Chelyabinsk's central Lenin Street and some of the
frames of
shop fronts buckled.

A loud noise, resembling an explosion, rang out at around 9.20 a.m. (12:20
a.m. ET). The shockwave could be felt in apartment buildings in the industrial
city's center.

I was standing at a bus stop, seeing off my girlfriend, said Andrei, a local
resident
who did not give his second name. Then there was a flash and I saw a trail of
smoke
across the sky and felt a shockwave that smashed windows.

A wall was damaged at the Chelyabinsk Zinc Plant but a spokeswoman said there
was no
environmental threat.

Although such events are rare, a meteorite is thought to have devastated an
area
of more than 1,250 miles in Siberia in 1908, smashing windows as far as
125 miles from the point of impact.

The Emergencies Ministry described Friday's events as a meteor shower in the
form of
fireballs and said background radiation levels were normal. It urged residents
not to panic.

Chelyabinsk city authorities urged people to stay indoors unless they needed to
pick
up their children from schools and kindergartens. They said what sounded
like a blast had been heard at an altitude of 32,800 feet.

The U.S. space agency NASA has said an asteroid known as 2012 DA14, about 46
meters in
diameter, would have an encounter with Earth closer than any asteroid
since scientists began routinely monitoring them about 15 years ago.

Television, weather and communications satellites fly about 500 miles higher.
The
moon is 14 times farther away.

Baczynska in Moscow,

 Hey
I dont know but this looks to me like big space junk, not a meteor. Too
slow, too much smoke, no fragmentation like for example on Peekskill
 video.
This will be interesting what did they find on the ground. Anyway I hope
it will be 10 ton lunar :D

[meteorite-list] List posts and formatting reminder - from the Admin

2013-02-15 Thread Art Jones
Good Morning;

As there's been a big event (wow!) I wanted to remind everyone that only plain
text emails make it through to the list. Be sure that your email client is
configured to send Plain Text, not Rich Text, Rich Formatting, or HTML.

Have a great day!

Re: [meteorite-list] Russian Meteor event Not related to 2012 DA14

2013-02-15 Thread MEM
Two ways to look at this and two possible outcomes.  Either it was or was not
related to the unperturbed orbit of 2012 DA14.

According to Dr Marco of the Dutch Meteor Society this could not be related to
Asteroid 2012 DA14.  When asked about the possible connection and the speed
with which the ESA published a disclaimer tweet he wrote:

In this case, no trajectory for the Russian bolide was needed to come to
that conclusion.

With a geocentric radiant at declination -81 degrees for the 2012 DA14
orbit, it is impossible for fragments from an associated stream to impact
at a latitude as high as 55 North. As seen from the viewpoint of approaching
2012 DA14 fragments, 55 N is the backside of the Earth.

**

HOWEVER there is a mindset that potential debris streams are likened to water
hoses or narrow stream channels in lockstep with the NEO aka Main Mass.
Photographs of recent collisions in the asteroid belt show that the stream
rapidly spreads out more like a delta than a stream bed increasing the length
of time/window of opportunity for earth to intercept any broad front debris
stream.  I still want to see the calculated orbit and know this wasn't snatched
from a parallel orbit, slingshot around the moon 3 days ago and over to poles.

Sorry, but I want a little more solid info from a group of folks that commingle
metric and Imperial units with out changing out the values.
Elton

PS: As I see it, DA14 is well inside/below the Roche Radius for a low density
rubble pile but not low enough for calculated high density objects.  If it
disintegrates then DA14 isn't an iron.

[meteorite-list] Russia Asteroid Strike 15FEB2013 - commentary, etc.

2013-02-15 Thread drtanuki
Dear List,
I have been scrambling for the past 12 hours plus.

A live interview with me on RT (Russia Today) was a giant surprise!

Site stats: Pageviews today 42,030 and the 24-hour day is 12 hrs into day.

This will certainly alter perception about the potential and reality of
potential danger from space, especially given the current world political
climate, world population and world economy.

After today things will NOT be the same. Perhaps NASA, ESA, and JAXA will be
forced to address funding for even better advance warning systems.

When the NEXT bigger one comes (still in many of our lifetimes) all hell
may break loose with population panic. This event can serve as a wake-up call.

Please support my site by supporting my Google sponsors which appear as google
ads and by bookmarking my site: http://lunarmeteoritehunters.blogspot.com/
The correct citing for my site is The Latest Worldwide Meteor/Meteorite News.

The specific link for this event is:
http://lunarmeteoritehunters.blogspot.jp/2013/02/mbiq-detects-russia-fireball-meteor.html

I will continue to update this story with a video library and data as it comes
in and is vetted.

Thank you for your contributions by visiting; my site is still a One-man-band
and 15-20 hours of worldwide monitoring is taxing on health, family, and other
aspects of my personal time; but This is what I choose to do.

Thank you all for helping to make my dream come tru of a worldwide
meteor/meteorite monitoring site outside of govt funding and control for all of
mankind.

Thank you all! Sincerely and humbly, Dirk Ross...Tokyo

It is ironic that as we learn more about meteorites by the common
hunter/collector and scientists with cooperating with science and meteorite
science that we may be too late and I wonder IF the dinos knew that they
realized that they too were too late to change behavior and culture ??? (joke
- dark humor)

Please help support this site by getting out the word about this site on
facebook, twitter, youtube, and with interested friends and forums and by
making constructive suggestions/criticism offline. Blessings! ... drtanuki

I don`t like to ask for donations but IF you feel lead let me know; thanks!
Non-the-less I will continue to serve the meteorite community and science.

I would like to thank Art Jones for the vision of creating the metlist! Thank
you Art!

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite over Russia

2013-02-15 Thread E.P. Grondine
Hi all -

So far, no fatalities, and though we have not heard as the severity of the
injuries, they appear to be from glass shards, and treatable. Thus I tend to
think of this as a low cost warning, and as something of a blessing.

My assumption is that money from fragment sales will go to a relief fund.

Given the ground effects, this one must have been pretty friable with a
detonation at a higher altitude than average.

Great Job you're doing there, Brownie.

There have never been any cases of meteorites breaking up at such a low level
over Russia before, said Yuri Burenko, head of the Chelyabinsk branch of the
Emergencies Ministry. I know there are some Siberian separatists, but last I
heard Siberia was still part of the Russian Federation.

[meteorite-list] Russian Meteor Not Associated With Asteroid 2012 DA14

2013-02-15 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2013-061

Russian Meteor Not Associated With Asteroid 2012 DA14
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
February 15, 2013

Preliminary information indicates that the fireball in Chelyabinsk,
Russia, is not related to asteroid 2012 DA14, which is flying by Earth
today.

The Russian fireball is the largest reported fireball since the 1908
Tunguska event. The fireball entered the atmosphere at 18 km per second.
The impact time was 3:20:26 UTC, and the energy released by the impact
was in the hundreds of kilotons. Based on the duration of the event, it
was a very shallow entry. It was larger than the fireball over Ind
onesia on Oct. 8, 2009. Measurements are still coming in, and a more
precise measure of the energy may be available later. The size of the
object before hitting the atmosphere was about 15 meters, the pre-impacting
asteroid was about 15 meters in diameter and had a mass of about 7,000 tons.
It was about 1/4 the size of asteroid 2012 DA14. The fireball trail was
visible for about 30 seconds, so it was a grazing impact through the
atmosphere. The fireball was brighter than the sun.

It is important to note that this estimate is preliminary, and some of the
estimates may be revised as more data is obtained.

such descriptions in Find a Falling Star...now we can hear it for
 ourselves...remarkable!
I keep hearing the estimated weight of this at 10 tons or
so...that's laughable! If this was about the size of a bus, and
composed of ordinary chondritic rock, the mass would be something on
the order of 270 tons, achondrite, 220 tons, nickel-iron, 800 tons.
There's probably more than a couple hundred tons of pulverized
material in just the smoke trail; compare it to the drawing of the
Sikhote-Alin fall...the resemblance is more than a passing one. In
particular, there is virtually no fragmentation during the
incandescent portion of the flight, in stark contrast to, say, the
fall of the Peekskill bolide. The S-A iron broke up just few miles
above the Earth's surface; I'm guessing something similar may have
happened here, and the amount of recoverable material of comparable
 mass.
I'm hoping for another planetary, too, but my money is that we're
looking at another iron fall. My guess is that we'll know for sure in
the next 48 hours, maybe less.

[meteorite-list] NASA Experts Discuss Russia Meteor in Media Teleconference Today

NASA Experts Discuss Russia Meteor in Media Teleconference Today
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
February 15, 2013

PASADENA -- NASA experts will hold a teleconference for news media at 1
p.m. PST (4 p.m. EST) today to discuss a meteor that streaked through
the skies over Russia's Urals region this morning.

Scientists have determined the Russia meteor is not related to asteroid
2012 DA14, which will safely pass Earth today at a distance of more than
17,000 miles (27,360 kilometers). Early assessments of the Russia meteor
indicate it was about one-third the size of 2012 DA14 and traveling in a
different direction.

Panelists for the teleconference are:

-- Bill Cooke, lead for the Meteoroid Environments Office at NASA's
Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.
-- Paul Chodas, research scientist in the Near Earth Object Program
Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

[meteorite-list] Russian Meteor Shook Ground Like An Earthquake

2013-02-15 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.space.com/19816-russian-meteor-earthquake-signal.html

Russian Meteor Shook Ground Like An Earthquake
By Becky Oskin
space.com
February 15, 2013

A meteor explosion in the skies above Russia this morning also walloped
the Earth, triggering shaking as strong as an earthquake, the U.S.
Geological Survey (USGS) reports.

Today's early morning blast, centered on the Chelyabinsk region, sent
massive tremors through the ground, which were recorded on seismic
monitoring instruments around the world.

Initial reports pegged the explosion as similar to a magnitude 2.7 shaker,
according a seismograph released by the USGS. For comparison, the 1908
Tunguska meteor blast's shock waves, which flattened 80 million trees in
Siberia, produced the equivalent of an estimated 5.0 temblor.

When you have an explosion in the air, it shakes the ground, and we see
it on the seismographs, explained Paul Caruso, a geophysicist at the USGS
National Earthquake Information Center in Denver, Colo., which reported the
meteor-related tremors. It's not an earthquake, and it looks very different
from the usual earthquake seismogram, he told OurAmazingPlanet.

Few meteor explosions have actually been recorded on seismographs, though,
Caruso said. We've been looking at it all morning, he added.

The meteor reportedly injured hundreds of people and damaged hundreds of
buildings when it exploded in a massive blast Friday morning (Feb. 15).

Most of the injured were reportedly hurt by falling glass caused by the blast,
and many have been hospitalized. In addition, an estimated 297 buildings
suffered damage, including six hospitals and 12 schools, according to
translations of updates by the Russian Emergency Ministry.

Scientists think a meteoroid entered the atmosphere above Russia's southern
Chelyabinsk region, where it exploded and broke up into fragments scattered
across three regions of Russia and Kazakhstan, according to news reports.

The Russian meteor probably had nothing to do with the upcoming close Earth
approach of asteroid 2013 DA14, which is due to make its closest approach to
the Earth at 2:24 p.m. ET, Don Yeomans, head of NASA's Near-Earth Object
Program, told SPACE.com. The Russian meteor's trail did not travel south to
north as the asteroid will.

[meteorite-list] Russia mega meteor and asteroid 2012DA14 related, yes I think so...

2013-02-15 Thread Bjorn Sorheim

All the various arguments against it being a connection between the russian
meteor of today and the asteroid passage also today of 2012 DA14 are quite
shallow and actually faulty. The closest passage of a very large asteroid
object ever and the the most damaging (for humans) meteorite fall ever in
the same day and they are not related?? That is a joke! Added to this, can
anyone with good knowledge (exact information) of the geometry of the two
trajectories of these bodies just compare them? The best knowledge I got
(from International Meteor Organization IMO) is pointing towards them being
exact parallell, which would in effect exclude them from not being related.
An object coming in shallow path from south could easily enter Russia from
northeast in the morning. The earth rotates continuously and therefore
entry from northeast is easily attainable. NASA (to the degree they have
made a final verdict) is in error here. Unfortunately the world press has
too little scientific background to counter an error from NASA and follow
it as a flock of drowsy geese. Sorry but this is the situation in this case!
Psychologically, I think this is a case (on the the part of NASA) as -
DON't you grab MY puppy!! (being incidentally asteroid 2012 DA14) Well,
Russia did just that, and the US reaction followed - not the first time
actually...

Hello Bjørn,

Ok, what _evidence_ do you have to the contrary?

/DA14's trajectory is trivially established precisely. Show us this
new body matches that trajectory. It either does or it doesn't. You
are claiming it does, so now you need to present your case.

Finger-pointing and innuendo does not a falsifiable argument make.

I saw this listing first thing this morning too. I immediately discredited it
because it's the morning of the fall and it's being listed by a guy in Vegas...
and oh ya it's already been sliced. Give me a break!

Re: [meteorite-list] Russia mega meteor and asteroid 2012DA14 related, yes I think so...

2013-02-15 Thread Bjorn Sorheim

The trajectory through the siberian atmosphere doesn't seem to be known with
very great precisison at the time.
I am working out from this statement from Jeremie Vaubaillon
on the [IMO-News] saying:
the bolide was heading very roughly North-East towards South-West.

Looking at the geometry of the orbit of 2012DA14 and the location of these
russian cites east of Ural
at nine in the morning, a flat path over west Siberia is _strikingly very
parallell_ to 2012DA14's
orbit. Only this is already giving a strong leaning towards them being
connected. You need to be looking
at a globe of the Earth and its exact tilt and Siberia's position to the
other objects of interest (asteroid, Sun)
to get a grasp of my argument. If not, you would not understand the value
of the argument.

If NASA (if they indeed have done so) is rejecting a connection to the
nearby asteroid
I think it foremost is up to them and other 'astronomers' doing so - to
bring forward what reasons

of rejecting a connection. They seem to have brought forward none.
The message from NASA says only:
Preliminary information indicates that a meteor in Chelyabinsk, Russia, is
not related to

asteroid 2012DA14, which is flying by Earth safely today.

Take note of the fact that the inclination of the orbit to Earth's orbit
plane is a shallow 10 degrees.
Actually one would say, 'almost' parallell to the Earth's orbital plane. So
no problem reaching any

point in the northern hemisphere, let alone 55 deg. N.
(And don't make the mistake of assuming that the meteorid/meteor is
originating in the
2012DA14's postion, they are flying _parallell_ through space at any
distance you may wish - within reason.)

Re: [meteorite-list] First Chelyabinsk Russia meteorite listed on eBay

2013-02-15 Thread almitt2
NASA asteroid expert Don Yeomans, head of the agency's Near-Earth
Object Program Office, told SPACE.com that the object which exploded
over a thinly inhabited stretch of eastern Europe today was most likely
an _exploding fireball known as a bolide._

Greetings all,

Looks like bolide is STILL a relevant term according to the NASA
expert! Also until a chemical analysis of the fallen material along
with a spectra of the asteroid that is near, we won't know for certain
if there is a connection. Lets wait until evidence is in.

Re: [meteorite-list] Interactive map of all known meteorites (Guardian data blog)

2013-02-15 Thread Anne Black

A couple problems.

I suppose you mean the Meteoritical Society, not the Meteorological
Society, since we are talking about meteorites not weather.
Also, there should be a red dot in Alsace, eastern France, where the
Ensisheim meteorite fell in 1492.

Besides that, this map is a great idea.

Every meteorite fall on earth mapped

Or at least those we know about. And where are the known meteorite
landing places on earth? These impact zones show where scientists have
found meteorites, or the impact craters of meteorites, some dating
back as far as the year 2,300BC. The data is from the US
Meteorological Society and doesn't show those places where meteorites
may have fallen but not been discovered

[meteorite-list] Small fragments of meteorite on ice in lake?

2013-02-15 Thread Robin Whittle
This page:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-02-15/russians-panic-as-meteor-shower-rains-down/4521958

  http://www.abc.net.au/news/image/4522768-3x2-940x627.jpg

has a photo of small black fragments ~12mm across on the ice, presumably
near the hole in the lake: A ruler is used to examine fragments said by
the Interior Ministry to be from the meteor (Reuters: Chelyabinsk region
Interior Ministry).

Using Google image search I haven't found any other source of this photo.

I assume this is the same hole as depicted here:

  http://rt.com/news/scientists-explain-chelyabinsk-bolide-337/

A Russian policeman works near an ice hole, said by the Interior
Ministry department for Chelyabinsk region to be the point of impact of
a meteor seen earlier in the Urals region, at lake Chebarkul some 80
kilometers (50 miles) west of Chelyabinsk February 15, 2013 (Reuters /
Chelyabinsk region Interior Ministry)

This page also shows weather satellite images of the meteor.

I haven't seen any more details about the zinc warehouse which was
severely damaged. A widely circulated photo shows a cloud of grey smoke
from inside the factory, which would not seem to be consistent with the
idea that the wall was simply blown down by the shockwave from
appoximately above. However, I think this was in Chelyabinsk, and I
understand the main or only path of the meteor was many km above this
area, so it seems unlikely that a fragment would have hit the ground there.

Lake Chebarkul is about 70km west and a little south of Chelyabinsk:

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Lake+Chebarkulhl=enll=55.044942,60.395622spn=0.15205,0.271912geocode=+t=hz=12

I haven't yet seen a map of the trajectory.

Here are two attempts at making such a map based on a weather satellite
image, though it is not clear that they have corrected for parallax:

http://attivissimo.blogspot.ch/2013/02/russian-meteor-path-plotted-in-google.html

  http://www.flickr.com/photos/hurizen/8475727383/

I guess the image only shows the initial part of the smoke trail or
light, since it seems the meteor went pretty much over the city of
Chelyabinsk. If so, then this track would go roughly westwards and a
little to the south, towards Miass, which would take it over the Lake
Chebarkul area.

Re: [meteorite-list] Russia mega meteor and asteroid 2012DA14 related, yes I think so...

2013-02-15 Thread Chris Peterson
It is 100% certain that the two bodies are unrelated, given the physical
impossibility of a single object producing the two completely different
trajectories involved. I'd suggest you study orbital dynamics before
making scientifically unsound suggestions.

NASA has made no final verdict. It's initial analysis is no different
than what dozens of other meteor experts have concluded.
