Mr. Kashuba's article on SaU 562 caught my eyes. I also acquired this TS before

His FOV-0.5 pic is mind boggling.

Thanks Everyone, for another great edition.

Benzaki Mohamed,
Since you have never reached out to me about my classification, Nwa 15758
CK6, I politely request that you do not use this name. I invested time and
resources into having it analyzed and if you wish to sell your material as
a named meteorite I suggest you do the same. Thank you in advance.

Re: [meteorite-list] Nice iron meteorite unclassified

2024-03-20 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list
Thank you Graham.
And thank you for having purchased this meteorite and for taking the time to
get it analyzed. If you had not it probably would have been chopped up and sold
as a probable-carbonaceous, and we would have never known that it was special.
So thank you.

Interesting to discuss Anne, It is true it is a gamble sometimes buying
unclassified material, especially as there are so many unusual achondrites
turning up these days that look like terrestrial rocks. But in a way that's the
point. There has been so much new research into these rocks so as the desert
hunters are spotting these rocks that do not fit the local geology and offering
them up unclassified then it's often worth the gamble..indeed some are sending
them direct to institutions more and more because so many are turning out to be
unusual metoeites. .that's how so many of these new types are being found and
those offering them and those taking the gamble are contibuting so much to
research in recent times.
I gambled on buying an unclassied NWA a few years back in Ensisheim that looked
as if it may turn out to be a CM and I wanted another larger CM to replace
others I'd let go for research, one being a 54g Murchison. It sat in my
collection for a while and then I decided I'd get the classification done to
confirm what I thought. Indeed I was wrong as when I cut it, it looked like no
other carbonaceous meteorite I'd seen before. I took it to be classified and
eventually it turned out to be a unique ungrouped carbonaceous specimen. I
donated extra and eventually more work will be done to investigate further. So
not only did I and the seller end up helping to discover something new and
contribute something extra to science, I gained a very special piece for my
collection.
All classified material was once unclassied and somebody had to take a gamble
on getting the work done, either as finder, buyer or researcher. There is a
danger in buying unclassified material but in the end it comes down to how
experienced the buyers and sellers are. It's unlikely to turn out well if an
inexperienced collector buys from a new or unknown seller.

 Hello Everyone,

Finbarr is correct. (Thank you!)

It looks like you can add AOL along with Gmail and Yahoo to the list who
require SPF, DKIM, and DMARC from the "sender's" mail server.

I know with Gmail, some can be delivered, some go to spam,  and
sometimes they are not delivered at all.

Anne, you can contact AOL and ask if they can whitelist
"meteoritecentral.com" and "imca.cc" until Art and the IMCA get DMARC
working.

For Website Owners, you can check your domain at the URL below.

https://mxtoolbox.com/emailhealth

Under "Mail Server" check to see if you have any errors.  Warnings are okay.

If you have any errors listed, send an email to p...@tools.mxtoolbox.com

You will receive an email back with some information but for a detailed
look click the "View your full deliverability report" link. This webpage
will give the information needed to provide to your web host to get your
mail server setup.

Anyone having any questions on this please contact me off list so we
don't clog the list.

Thank you,

Paul

Re: [meteorite-list] Destruction of the Hopewell civilization

2023-09-28 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list
 Indian sites.

Camp Verde, AZ. - Iron, IAB – 61.5kg, transported Canyon Diablo. Sometime
around 1915, George E. Dawson found a stone cyst, typical in appearance to a
child burial, in the corner of an ancient Indian dwelling.  About 18 inches
down, he uncovered the meteorite, wrapped in a feather-cloth.  The 2 foot long,
1 foot wide, 5 inch thick iron can be imagined to resemble a small child with a
distinctive head and shoulders, and a very pronounced spine that appears to
have been rubbed smooth by human hands. It was found approximately 65 miles
southwest of Meteor Crater. Bloody Basin, AZ. – Iron, IAB – 5.074kg,
transported Canyon Diablo.  Found September, 1964 by A. Morriston,
approximately 65 miles southwest of Meteor Crater, in connection to an Indian
burial.

Mesa Verde Park, CO. – Iron, IB – 3.5kg.  Found in 1922 in the Sun Shrine at
the north end of Pipe Shrine House, commingled with miscellaneous rock
fragments.

Winona, AZ – Stone, Winonaite – 24kg.  Roughly 35 miles NW of Meteor Crater is
the prehistoric site of a vanished tribal people now referred to as the
Sinagua.  In 1928, archaeologists discovered the Winona meteorite in a stone
cyst in the floor of one of the rooms.  The manner in which it was carefully
buried closely resembled the method of burial of a revered young child of the
Sinagua culture. This seems to suggest that the pueblo builders most likely
considered the meteorite a sacred object, possibly after witnessing its fall.
Originally thought to be a single, large, egg-shaped mass, the stone had
crumbled to pieces during its over 700 year internment.

*Pojoaque, NM. – Stony-iron, Pallasite - Synonym for a small, transported
fragment of Glorietta.  Found in 1930 inside a small black-on-white pottery jar
that was plowed out of the ground by an Indian.  The worn condition of the
meteorite suggests that it may have been part of a medicine man’s
paraphernalia.

Bonita Springs, FL. – Stone, H5 – 41.8kg.  Reginald Lyles found this meteorite
in 1938 or 1939 while digging in a local Indian sand mound that measured 300
feet in diameter and 6 feet high.  The large stone was situated amid several
skeletons.  It was recognized as a meteorite in 1956, and was purchased by the
Smithsonian.Apex, CO. – Stone, L6 – 6.1g.  Found by Robert Akerley during
his investigation of an ancient Indian camping site in the foothills west of
Denver, subsequently known as the Magic Mountain site.

Oktibbeha County, MS. – Iron, IB – 156g.   Found in 1854 in an Indian mound (on
which no data have been recorded).

Pedernales, TX. – Iron, IAB – 691g.  Mr. John Stitt excavated this small
meteorite from a depth of 4 feet from an Indian rock midden on December 1,
1980.

Meteorites have also been found by surface hunters while searching on various
Indian sites across the country.  These were most likely NOT collected by the
early inhabitants, but were merely random and coincidental falls upon, or at
least near, land that was once occupied by the Indians. The following are a few
examples that illustrate such finds. Dalhart, TX. – Stone, H5 – 4.4kg.  Found
in 1968 by an amateur hunter of Indian artifacts on a grass pasture.  Delaware,
AR. – Stone, L4 – 8.346kg.  A single stone was found by a then 12 year old boy,
Daniel Michaelson in 1972 while hunting for arrowheads near Delaware, Arkansas.
When found, the stone was still black, and therefore at least a fairly recent
fall.  This fresh condition obviously indicates that the early inhabitants of
the site had no knowledge of the stone.  It had simply fallen there relatively
recently and was found merely by accident while Michaelson was surface hunting
for arrowheads. Unfortunately, the Delaware meteorite was left to weather
outdoors for nearly 30 years, when it was at last identified as a meteorite by
the well known meteorite hunter, Allen Shaw.

Floyd, NM. – Stone, L4 – 13kg.  Found in 1966 by the prolific and legendary
meteorite hunter, Skip Wilson, while originally pursuing his hobby of arrowhead
hunting.  This was his very first meteorite find. Skip has gone on to find more
than 200 stones, representing over 125 unique meteorite classifications! If he
had never been interested in arrowhead hunting, the meteorite-world  would
almost assuredly been robbed of this great meteorite hunter.  Tarlton, OH. –
Stone, H4 – 226.5g.  Found in the summer of 1967 by Mr. Richard Wise while
hunting for fossils and Indian artifacts.

Thurman, CO. – Stone, OC – 1.959kg.  A single stone that has not yet been fully
classified was found in 1965 by a woman while she was looking for arrowheads.

Walcott, TX. – Stone, H5 – 2kg.  Found in November, 1983 during a search for
arrowheads.
Best wishes to all,
   Robert Woolard

One interesting line:  The Hopewell people collected the meteorites and forged
malleable metal from them into flat sheets used in jewelry and musical
instruments called pan flutes.

It would be interesting to hear more.

[meteorite-list] David Gregory

2022-10-06 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list
Hello everybody,
I am sorry but I have very bad news to tell you.Just a few hours ago I received
an email from Chris Gregory informing me that his father Dr. David Gregory had
passed away Monday night. The effects of the cancer he had been battling for
years finally got to him.
For those of you who did not have the chance and pleasure to meet him, he was
the friendliest person, a doctor, and a long time collector of our favorite
space rocks. You could usually see him during the Denver or the Tucson Shows
sitting quietly in the room of one or the other of the meteorite dealers,
chatting with all the people he knew. I last saw him during the Tucson Show of
2020, I told him that I had broken my back a few months earlier, he told me
that he had done that too years earlier, so we had a very nice conversation
comparing back problems!!

Again we lost a very kind friendly person, and the world is poorer tonight.
Please tell everybody who might have known him. Thank you.All my sympathy and
condolences to Chris and his family.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Times Magazine 20 Year Anniversary Issue

Hello Everyone,

The May issue of Meteorite Times is now up.  It's hard to believe that
this is our 20 year anniversary issue.  Our first issue was in April
2002 back when Meteorite Times was monthly. We'd like to give a special
thank you to all of the writers over the years who have contributed
articles to Meteorite Times. And a special thank you to Martin Horejsi,
James Tobin, John Kashuba, and Mitch Noda for their continued article
support.

With the May issue we have a new web hosting company providing better
performance and as our old template was not being supported anymore I
have created a new template using Elementor with an updated look but
same layout functionality. If anyone notices any errors or strange
behavior please contact me off list.

https://www.meteorite-times.com/

Enjoy!

[meteorite-list] Ensisheim Show

2022-03-17 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list
FINALLY!! The Ensisheim Show. A long message from Zelimir Gabelica, the
organizer of the Ensisheim Show. Yes there will be a Show in Ensisheim in June
this year, and here is all the information you need to visit, sell, or buy at
the Show:
“ENSISHEIM METEORITE SHOW 2022”GENERAL INFORMATIONShow dates & brief
scheduleAfter the cancellation of the show in 2020 and 2021 for Covid-19
pandemic problems, we have recently decided that the 21st edition of
“Ensisheim-Meteorite” show can be again held in the “Palais de la Régence”
which remains the forever show magical place. Tables re-arrangements have been
planned in the old Regency building and within the annexed tent, in accordance
with the law on security distancing requirements. As already announced on small
leaflets distributed at the Munich Mineral Show last October, our Meteorite
show will be held as usually, the week preceding the Ste-Marie-aux-Mines
“Mineral & Gem” show:* Friday June 17: 10:00–18:00: professional day (for
dealers only, public not allowed).* Friday 18:00 : official opening of the show
in front of the Regency building, followed by a short optional visit of the
thematic exhibition (and the genuine Ensisheim meteorite !) in the Regency
museum. The end of these visits is scheduled at 18:30 sharp.* Friday18:30:
Official show pre-opening (for dealers, friends & invited guests): welcome
words, induction ceremonies, and the traditional friendly drink.* Friday 20:00
: traditional DINNER PARTY in the big tent set on the square (see below).Show
opening to the public:* Saturday June 18: 9:30–18:30 (dealer’s access possible
from 8:30)* Sunday June 19: 9:30–16:30Location: Regency Palace & attached tent,
city main square (in front of the church)Entrance fee* Saturday + Sunday: 5 €*
Saturday only: 5 €* Sunday only: 3 €* Children under 12: free* To avoid fraud,
tickets with stamp will be distributed at the entranceThe showrooms81 dealer
tables will be installed in different Regency palace rooms and in a medium
sized tent (10.5 x 7 m) connected to the main entrance of the building. The
entrance to the Palace is now such that the public must first enter the main
tent door and inevitably visit all the tables of the tent before entering the
building. Oppositely to the 2019 show, it is not anymore possible to reach
directly the Regency buildings. The “Tent” contains 27 tables, including the 3
consignment tables (see below) that are on the right side of the tent
entrance. The “Pas Perdus” hall (first floor entrance) involves again 5 dealer
tablesThe “Spiess” space is again fully open and can accommodate 8 dealer
tablesThe “Egloff” hall now allows placing 10 tables. The “Regency Room” was not
affected by the recent works. It still contains the usual 35 tables.Travel
tipsMaps and travel itineraries could be found soon on the website of the city
of Ensisheim:www.ville-ensisheim.fr.Nearby hotels are: "La Couronne" (reopened
after a substantial restoration) "Domaine du Moulin", "Logis de l'Ecomusée",
"Niemerich" and "Cheval Blanc" hotels. More information on their location and
their characteristics (phone, fax, e-mail, websites) will be given on the
official show flyer which will be finalized soon. You could also find it on the
city's website or ask me to send it to you by e-mail.IMPORTANT: everyone must
organize his own accommodation! If you call, they all also speak English and
German.SPECIFIC MESSSAGE FOR DEALERSTable attributionThe present configuration
of the space currently available (buildings + tent) forces us again to assign
the tables according to the seniority rule. The "old exhibitors" (those who have
reserved tables for a long time), will have the priority to have their usual
tables in the Regency room (or elsewhere if preferred) so as in 2019. I will
try to arrange their table(s) the best I can, respecting as much as possible
the old layout and their wishes regarding the presence of their usual
neighbors. The "new exhibitors" (those who have rented tables recently and all
the newcomers) will receive their tables in the adjacent tent, following the
"first come, first served" rule. Those of you who booked tables in 2019, please
inform me quickly whether (or not) you wish to confirm your renting tables this
year.If yes, specify how many tables you want to rent.I insist that if you
cannot come this year, you notify me that you want to cancel. This is very
important and absolutely necessary so that I can immediately assign tables to
those who are on the waiting list.Table specification:All tables (in the
building and in the tent) are considered almost equivalent in size (24 tables
are 182 x 75 cm and 61 tables are 160 x 80 cm) and in price (single price of
200 euros per table - and not per meter), regardless of the number of tables
rented, meaning that there is no more digressive price for those who rent more
than one table. The Palace and the tent rooms are well lit. It's up to you to
decide if your

My first post, so apologies if I miss anything. There were many reports of
hearing a loud boom around 11:28am EST on Saturday,  January 1st, 2022.. The
Nat'l Weather svc reported no lightening but potentially a meteorite exploded
before hitting the ground. The target area is about 60min drive for me, and I'd
love to find some remnants,  as rare as that would be.
Either way I'd like to confirm if it was a meteorite. The cloud cover was heavy
and raining in my area, so there was no chance of seeing anything.
Has anyone heard anything or have any data they could share?

Those of us who knew Dan and were there at the NM Mineral Symposium, had heard
Sunday morning that Dan had had "something heart-related" happen and was at a
hospital in Albuquerque, but no one knew anything of the details, nor what his
condition was. We'd had a dinner banquet for the symposium that Saturday
evening, and Dan and Brenda were there then--in fact, I even sat at the table
with them--and at that time Dan had never said one word about having had any
medical issue!
Very glad that he is doing well, and that there were friends and family to
pitch in and help.

Erin, Dan's daughter, posted this on Facebook.Lets hope Dan gets well very
quickly.
This week took a bit of a turn on its head. Sunday morning my Dad had a heart
attack. He and my mom were out at a mineral symposium they attend every year in
Socorro, New Mexico with the airstream when Dad started having chest pain
Friday night. When he went to the emergency room in the tiny town Sunday
morning, they decided to fly him by helicopter to Albuquerque. Wonderful
friends of my parents drove my mom the hour or so to the Hospital and helped
button down the Airstream, I immediately got on the road and drove the 6.5hrs
to get there (it was faster than I could get a flight there), and my awesome
husband and best friend Brynn, took over things at home so I could leave
quickly. Dad had a stent put in and they determined he had a STEMI, which is
the most severe type of heart attack. Of course, you’d never know it from Dad.
Just hours afterwards, he was very much himself. I think the hardest thing will
be convincing Dad to take it seriously. Ha. He’s doing very well considering
all he went through (and the fact that he waited so long to take himself to the
ER). The doctors and nurses have all been wonderful and he’s been in great
hands. The Dr saw very little damage and is confident his heart will recover
well if he sticks to his cardio rehab and does what he’s supposed to. He was
released today and we got to go have lunch together and take a nice leisurely
walk through the Albuquerque Balloon Museum. My Dad’s brother Chuck is on a
plane here now and will be helping us start the journey home with my car and
the truck and trailer tomorrow. We will be taking it slow, but hopefully we
will all be home soon. Dad’s in great spirits and feeling really good, so
again, the hardest thing will be keeping him slowed down a bit to let his heart
heal. We’re so thankful he’s doing so well. We are so grateful for all the
amazing friends and family we have that have reached out and been so amazing
and helpful. My parents have such a great support system and so do I. So thank
you.

Greetings,

I did a lot of business with David New and always enjoyed talking with
him. I still have a lot of specimens in my collection and preserved
his info cards. As I go through my collection I will probably thin
down pieces and put David's card back with his specimen and offer
those for sale in the future.

You are right Greg, there use to be a lot of trust between the few
dealers and a limited number of collectors.

I can remember Compuserve and the astronomy forum. I met Joseph
Murakami there and we started perhaps one of the first meteorite
forums. The Sysop allow us a place on the astroforum to talk
meteorites. I think Bernd was also on there as I had downloaded some
information he put out for meteorites. Before this time I did a lot of
letter writing to dealers asking for sales lists as there was so
little information to read about meteorites.

Re: [meteorite-list] SALE: BUR-ABOR, AN INCOMPARABLE METEORITE SPECIMEN – MAIN MASS

2021-05-19 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list
This is odd, it totally  contradict what the Met.Bulletin says about that
meteorite:
About 50 fragments totaling 280–300 kg, the largest weighing >250 kg, were
found by a family after they heard an explosion and saw a cloud of dust.
Nearby banana trees were broken, and some contained embedded metal shards.
However, the recovered iron meteorite is too weathered to be consistent with a
recent date of fall.
Not a Fall, but a weathered find. Not one main mass, but 50 fragments.

Subject: [meteorite-list] SALE: BUR-ABOR, AN INCOMPARABLE METEORITE SPECIMEN –
MAIN MASS

    NOW AVAILABLE AT AUCTION
BUR-ABOR, AN INCOMPARABLE METEORITE SPECIMEN – MAIN MASS Iron, medium
octahedrite IIIAB
Northeastern Province, Kenya https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/27190/lot/11/
A thrilling 600-pound main mass, the Bur-Abor meteorite main mass may arguably
be classed at the top of all large iron meteorites to be offered at auction.
Bur -Abor was found in Northeastern Kenya in a local family's garden, after it
fell on Nov. 27, 1997. Considered an unwitnessed fall, Bur-Abor boasts numerous
distinguished qualities.

The present main mass is replete with regmaglypts and large scoops while also
displaying the rarely seen feature of orientation. These distinctive features
were caused by ablation as the meteorite coursed through Earth's atmosphere.
One can see the surface area where elongated, parallel thumbprints indicate
oriented flight, which melted grooves into the surface, mirroring each other in
shape and size. Created by millions of years in the heavy metal core of an
asteroid, it weighs a massive 274 kilograms and has never been cleaned or wire
brushed; its appearance is exactly as it was the day it was found.

After its discovery, a portion of Bur-Abor was taken to the Natural History
Museum in London. The present offering is the main mass. Iron meteorites of
this size and beauty are generally only seen in world renowned museums and a
few university display collections. The magnificent piece is offered on a
rotating custom steel stand. Weighing 274kg (602.8 lbs). Measuring 32 x 20 x 15

Since a few people (very few!  just 2!!) have answered, here is what I have

Anne, I cheated and just went to Mike's site for the other two 21st century
coincidental falls -
Dec 09, 2013 - Parauapebes (H4-5 chondrite) : Brazil (Hammer) Dec 09, 2013 -
Mahbas Arraid (LL6 chondrite) : Western Sahara

and
Mar 01, 2009 - Cartersville (L5 chondrite) : Georgia USA (Hammer) Mar 01, 2009
- Nkayi (L6 chondrite) : Zimbabwe

even the former of those is not watertight as the stones were discovered 9
months after the fall...
There is also Glendale and Benenitra on July 27, 2018 but Glendale is
unofficial.
Yes I'm lazy but actually it might be an idea for an additional filter in the
database...
Best regards,Finbarr.

[meteorite-list] Ensisheim 2022 - More information

2021-04-30 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list
For all of you Dealers and visitors who are eager to plan for the Ensisheim
2022 show, Zelimir sent more information. And here it is:

Hello meteorite aficionados and friends,

As president of the Association of Friends of the Ensisheim Meteorite, giventhe
uncertain development of the pandemicsituation (Covid-19 and its variants), I
must inform you officially and withgreat regret that we must cancel again the
2021 edition of our meteorite showand postpone the event to June 2022. This
heavy decision was takenconjunctly by the organizing committee and the
municipal authorities of thecity of Ensisheim.

Our event involves many exhibitors and visitors from all over the world
andholds a large audience. The virus and its new variants continue to
emerge, disappear, or persist, and to circulate around the world, requiring
periods ofconfinement and deconfinement. This health crisis, as well as that of
theglobal economy, could last for many weeks and months to come. No one can
yetpredict when the free movement of people to cross borders will be effective,
orwhen the gathering of the public that circulates among the tables will
beofficially tolerated.

The report of the show in the autumn was also considered, but quicklyrejected
due to too much uncertainty about the evolution of sanitaryconditions.
Furthermore, holding the show at an unusual date and in a reducedconfiguration
was not found to be satisfactory.

Presumingthis pandemic will be over next year, we invite you to meet in 2022,
from June 17 to 19, to resume withconfidence our cultural and scientific
activities around meteorites.

By ensuring the full support of the entire organizing committee, receiveall of
you my best regards and above all, stay healthy!

 Zelimir

 Important note

In early February 2020, I have irreversibly lost my usual email address“uha.fr”
so that I could not read any of your messages you may have sent since, this
explaining my long silence. Should you need to contact me for questions
orcomments, please use my new current email address:

This will also allow me to reconstruct the entire list of addresses of

I've been fielding a lot of e-mails this week from someone who is certain that
a meteorite nearly hit their house.  The picture they sent me is of what looks
like a weathered lava bomb that likely washed free of an upslope location and
rolled/fell/bounced into his yard.  They found it the following day after a
"loud thump that shook the house", then picked it up and hosed it off, so don't
have any pictures of it in situ, just a shallow hole with muddy splash marks.
I've told them several times that it doesn't look like a meteorite: vesicles,
not regmaglypts; no fusion crust, nothing that identifies it as a likely
meteorite, but they don't want to hear it.  Anyone who has dealt with a
persistent "meteorite" finder, how did you eventually get them to listen to
reason/experience -- or not?

Best!

In my experience the import charges/duty/VAT have been applied quite randomly
whether or not the seller declared a correct value or not in the UK.
So sometimes I get charged and sometimes not. If stopped we then also get an
extra charge from the shipping company for handling it too. So on small items
the charges can be far more than what was paid for the item!
To be honest that side of things in not a problem. It is the fact our
government wants the sellers in other countries to register with the UK for VAT
and do the collecting of tax for them at point of sale and then forward that to
the UK quarterly for smaller items below £135 that does not seem sensible.
Otherwise I think it stays the same if above £135 and the taxes are collected
at our border customs.

Something is not clear.

Are you saying that the 20% VAT (collecting, registration,...etc) applies only
to sales valued at LESS than L135 (Roughly $180)?
But does not applies to anything with higher value, regardless of value?

I got the impression that it was the opposite.

Please clarify.

Hi Mike,

Yep, sadly correct if the value is less than £135. Crazy! So you as a vendor
would have to register for VAT with UK authorities, charge and collect 20% VAT
on behalf of the UK government then file quarterly VAT returns and pay the UK
government what you've collected on their behalf

Madness!

Cheers from across the pond.

Thank you all for your feedback.  I’ve been talking with folks on
various platforms today, and it seems I’ve found a good option.  There is a new
meteorite-related, international, non-profit organization standing up soon.
They’ve agreed to host GA-style information including images with free and open
access.  What I’d like to do, if it’s alright with y’all, is to host content on
that platform and send links to the Met List.  That way y’all can share in the
content, the information remains freely available, and this also solves the
problem of how to share images (strewn fall calculations, images of radar
signatures, etc.).    This new organization is going to make its
debut online in about a month and will have their own announcements – I don’t
want to steal their thunder by saying more than that now. It looks like this is
going to work well.      If any new falls occur between now and
then, well I’m working on that.  I’ll find a way to disseminate that
information.    Cheers, Marc    From: Swan Valley Bushcraft

Marc    This Meteorite List has terms of service as well, and has removed
individuals based upon their postings. It would be a shame if our precious
meteorite list was dragged into an ideological debate as we have struggled to
keep the List on topic in the past.     Even though this List is not a

Perhaps more clarification about your proposal is needed.     Best wishes

forum for all participants. Unfortunately, Facebook has recently enacted
policies which restrict the uncensored flow of content between one end of the
political spectrum in particular.  I cannot support censorship, as it is a form
of oppression.  I have shut down Galactic Analytics (but will retain old
content on Facebook for the time being) and am looking for a new, open venue to
host content.   Most of the options include starting up some new
platform, which has the drawback of adding yet another source for interested
parties to keep track of.  However it occurred to me that we can use this as an
opportunity to consolidate sources.     What would you all think if
I were to start posting GA content on the Meteorite List?  When an event occurs
I can post it here.  I will have to find a server to host images but that is
do-able.  Be advised that it may increase MetList traffic by a sizable

All things considered, April sounds a bit optimistic.

If a show was outside, like Quartzite, then I would be less worried
about exposure risk while attending. My main concern would be
traveling to and from the show and how lodging could be handled.
Traveling and lodging present their own inherent risks.

Or, they could just move the show to Florida where the governor is a
science-denier and business is open as usual. A lot of people down
here are acting like nothing is happening. Events, parades, parties,
sporting events with fans in the stands, the whole nine yards. Of
course, the hospitals are filled to the rafters and the morgues are
overflowingso there's that.

Stay safe!

Re: [meteorite-list] Who sold their collection to a pawn shop?

2020-12-02 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list
Good point except for one problem:  The TKW on the Met.Bulletin is rarely
correct. So many more fragments, and masses are usually found well after the
meteorite is classified and listed on the Met. Bulletin. And the information on
the Met. Bulletin is rarely updated.
Example:  Saint-Aubin is still listed with a total weight of 472kilos, but the
main mass is over 4 tons. And look at Tatahouine, Seymchan,...

Hey Mike,
Check out the Dar El Ghani 995 and examine the listed weights for the stone.
Take into account the two photographed specimens in the encyclopedia of
meteorites.
https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=6535
https://www.ebay.com/itm/46-5-G-Dar-al-Gani-995-Meteorite-Specimen-Main-Mass-Black-Fusion-Crust-DaG-995-/264951405461?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292
Main mass of 46.5g and the bulletin says the type specimen weighs 11.2g . The
tkw is listed as 56.12 This is a physical impossibility since the Pawn Shop
shows a tkw of 57.62, more than the Meteoritical Bulletin shows exists, and
that is not accounting for cutting loss and the 2 photographed specimens. Maybe
the meteorites were purposely stripped of the provenance to hide something.
Maybe they are stolen? Clearly someone is trying to get rid of them really
fast. Buyers should be cautious, and the collection they are sourced from
should be identified fast!!!

Hello folks,

With regard to Steve Britteham's MPOD of 8/18/20 where he stated that with some
simple parts and some innovation,
anyone is able to enjoy the amazing kaleidoscope (type) images of a meteorite
thin section. His illustrated
microscope setup is probably too intense for a casual collector. I do
understand his methods and goals. Again,
too much for most. However, for simple home viewing of thin sections under XPOL
(cross polarized lighting) which
shows the beautiful colors that, we know, we all love to see, this type of
viewing can be accomplished quite simply.
If I remember correctly, Steve Schoner (bless him-super guy) offered a hand
held viewer. The only important parts
needed are Two ordinary polarized camera lenses (camera shop "goody box"--$2/3
apiece) and Any light source.
Of course any microscope would improve the expierience. I hope Marissa had her
oooh & aaah moment. I was on
a personal mission to rival Kashuba's expert work and s#it happened in 2012 for
me, now I just watch others build
their own systems. My favorites to view are achondrites - just ask Anne.

Many others have tried to get a Met-List or IMCA list going on this subject
with limited results. It is Not complicated
to achieve astounding personal results. A few comments from the knowledgeable
geared towards a collector
that's sitting home and saying "how do I even get started". Help them get
started and they'll go from there.
Guaranteed they will.
Big thanks to thin section producers.

Every one of them is Beautiful in XPOL.
Thank you Steve.

My last email was about 4.5 months ago and since then much has changed in
the world and in my inventory. As before, I hope that every one of you is
staying safe and healthy. I have been staying quite busy and continue to
work on bridging the gap between scientists and collectors. Some of you have
been of great help on this project and I am very appreciative. If you’d like
to see some of what I’ve been working on you can go to:
https://www.skyfallmeteorites.com/education-research/meteorite-wiki/meteorit
ics-classification
Attached you will find my sales list spanning a large percentage of my
inventory (listed by type). The list is sortable and filterable so you can
easily sort by name if needed. Falls are highlighted in light blue. Notable
new meteorites are highlighted in light gray as are a few that may have been
overlooked in the past. Some notables:
1) Zhob, a rare classification, H3-4, fell Jan. 2020. This meteorite has
beautiful brecciation (picture attached).
2) Erg Chech 002, an ungrouped achondrite unlike anything seen in
meteoritics (picture attached).
3) Chwichiya 002,  a C3.00-ung. This meteorite is a consignment item, but
all specimens are with me.
Though many institutions are not able to trade out material, for those of
you that can, I am usually open to do so on nearly all specimens. Prices and
pictures are available by request as is the provenance.
Regards to all and enjoy the weekend!

If you are on this distribution list it is because we either know each other
personally, have done business in the past, met at LPSC or MetSoc, are FB
Friends that have corresponded in a meaningful manner, or you were referred
to me by someone on this list. My intent is not to spam anyone and the max
number of emails you will receive from me will not exceed 6 times a year in
order to present new material for sale or to tell you about important
meteorite falls or classifications. If you do not want to be on this list,
please let me know and I will remove you.

Hey Mendy,Thanks for your response, but if that’s true, Erg Chech 002 should
have like 30 different NWA numbers. Same with 869 and Al Haggounia 001 and
about a thousand other NWAs. The Martian is unique looking enough and has a
unique-ish composition, was all found around the same time and submitted around
the same time. It’s all the same material. Just because it was sold to a
handful of dealers shouldn’t mean it’s a handful of different meteorites
(opinion).~Roberto

Roberto,

Well … You are right. Unless you bought material that can be traced back to
any of the mass holders listed in the classification, then those stones are
not “Erg Chech 002” and have either been visually paired and sold improperly
under that name, visually paired and sold as visually paired, AND/OR are in
process of getting their own numbers paired by classification.

Just because a meteorite can be paired visually does not mean that it should
or can be classified as such. I would recommend reading the guidelines
(https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/docs/nc-guidelines.pdf) to understand how
names and pairings are determined for falls versus dense collection area
finds. The system is not perfect and for sure needs improvements to reflect
the situation on the ground, but I believe we as a community are better off
recommending changes working with and within the MetSoc. However, doing so
means that we have to address not just our concerns but also the concerns of
the MetSoc and NomCom. In order to find common ground, we as hunters,
collectors, dealers, etc. need to understand their reasons for why the rules
are as they are. Changes forced from the outside are rarely effective.

If you want to have a more in-depth discussion, feel free to contact me off
list.

Hello all

I have a nice lot of historic falls available from the Walton Collection.

Send a reply and I'll get back with price and photo

Mr. Wayne Walton was one of the first scientists to study rocks from
the first lunar landing, NASA's Apollo 11 mission. His team originated
and compiled most of the information in NASA's catalogues, Apollo 11
Lunar Sample and Apollo 14 Rock Samples. Mr. Walton's double major in
Geology and Chemistry at Drury College in Springfield, Missouri had
led to a Masters Degree in Geochemistry at University of Arizona,
after which he became a research chemist at the Minnesota Mining and
Manufacturing Company. Later, as he prepared for a career in teaching
- his life's greatest passion - at Ohio State University, he became
intrigued with meteorites. He began his prolific collecting hobby and
subsequently chose meteorites as the subject of his dissertation,
Phase Equilibrium in the System Farringtonite-Whitlockite-Forsterite
at One Atmosphere Pressure. From this study, new and unusual minerals
have been discovered. After Mr. Walton's career at NASA, he taught as
a missionary in Africa for fourteen years where, in the early 1990's,
he was instrumental in making the discovery of Gao known to the world.
Mr. Walton's fascination with meteorites resulted in a fine assemblage
of specimens representing a spectacular variety of localities,
including rarely seen meteorites like these:

Forest City, Olivine bronzite chondrite (H 5), 4.3 grams;

Lancon, Olivine bronzite chondrite (H 6), 0.3 grams;

[meteorite-list] Ensisheim Show 2020

2020-04-11 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list
Hello everybody, Here a message from Zelimir Gabelica the organizer of the
Ensisheim Show. Hello friends, As president of the Association of Friends of
the Meteorite of Ensisheim, given the current situation (coronavirus and its
consequences), I have the duty to announce to you officially and with great
sadness, that we cannot maintain the 2020 edition of our Show on meteorites and
that, therefore, we postpone the event to 2021. This decision takes into
account the unanimous opinion of our organizing committee and is also in
complete agreement with the opinion and request of the municipal authorities of
the city of Ensisheim. Our event involves a large number of dealers from all
over the world and attracts a large audience. Even if the current containment
(the latest news, planned to be extended beyond mid-April) will (perhaps) end
next June, it is expected that the period of "de-containment" will be long and
very progressive. Health experts agree that the health crisis, but also, and
most importantly, the economic one, could last for weeks, even months. No one
can yet predict when the free movement of people across the borders will be
effective, or if the gathering of the public who circulates during the fair
will be officially authorized next June. We hope that this pandemic will end
before the end of the summer and that we can resume our cultural and scientific
activities with confidence in June 2021. With the full support of the entire
organizing committee, Best regards to all of you, and most importantly, stay
healthy! Zelimir Anne blackimpactika.comimpact...@aol.com

Subject: [meteorite-list] A note from E.T.

Hi Folks,
I am writing to pay homage to James Tobin and Paul Harris for all that they do
for the meteorite community. We all owe them a debt of gratitude for bringing
the meteorite community together in so many ways. So much of what they do takes
work , effort and dedication with virtually no reward or recognition. Many of
us owe them for a great deal of the business we have enjoyed over the years. It
is so incredibly unselfish of both of them to promote web based businesses in
the marketplace.
I was on the phone today with Jim when a call came in from Al Lang. Al asked a
question that only Jim could answer so after merging the calls, we had a nice
confab. Al is setting up at the 22nd street tent where he was located last
year. He asked Jim if there was going to be a dealers list for the Tucson show
coming up in a couple of weeks. Both Al and I learned just how thankless Jim
and Paul's efforts really are. Jim replied that because all of the information
must be input manually and because some people who don't send in their location
information or do it too late, have berated them because they not featured on
the coming show list, that they have considered not providing the list any
longer. Jim related a story of a dealer who climbed their cage at the IMCA
dinner last year because they were not on the list, even though they had not
provided any location information.
Its easy to understand why they would not want to deal with that grief again.
I would like to personally and publicly thank Jim Tobin and Paul Harris, two of
the nicest guys on this planet, for their generosity and all of the wonderful
contributions they make to our hobbies, businesses and the amazing science that
is Space and these beautiful rocks that fall from the sky!

Regards,  E.T.

Yes John,
Thin-sections are amazing, like looking in the heart of a meteorite. And John
Kashuba takes great pictures of them. Do you read his column in
Meteorite-Times.com?
You can also see some of his pictures on my website, along with many
thin-sections. And yes of course they are available.
Thanks.

Hello Steve,

Nice to hear from you. I will Always treasure the 30+ thin sections
that I recieved from you. For all others that have not had their eyes
on a meteorite thin section during cross polarization - you Will Not
believe what you are seeing - absolutely beautiful.

The current 3-D work and previous work by Kashuba and Phillips (and
others--sorry)
is spectacular. But, to see it live only amplifies the beauty of it.

As Steve stated, with some innovation and very little cost it is possible
to get a very good rendition of what they have to offer as eye candy.

Tracy,

If you can get those 3D poloroid glasses that are used for modern 3D movies,
just pop out the plastic poloroids and cross them till
they turn black. Staple or tape them together.  Place the slide between them
and any microscope will show amazing details.

Not as good as a quality petrographic microscope, but for one that just wants
to see some amazing detail in a thin section that
will do just fine. One can also the two use it with a hand lens.

I have a friend who likes to do microphotography; he can produce fascinating
3-D images.? I've loaned him some of my meteorite

there are voids or vugs.? Last time i spoke with
him, I mentioned thin sections and wondered if he would be interested in trying
microphotographs of that.? Turns out he is VERY
intrigued by the prospect.

Now comes the fun part.? I don't usually go in for thin sections, having none
of the microscopes or polarizing filters to make them
pop.? Does anyone have one or two they would be willing to part with
inexpensively so I can let Gary have a crack at them?? They
don't need to be anything rare or unusual for a first foray; if it turns out he
likes them, I will have started him on a new bad

Re : the so-called "Breja" fall of May 01, 2010 in Morocco.

I recall that a good bit of material from this fall appeared on the

market for a period of time after the fall, then it got forgotten as

newer and more interesting material surfaced later. It was a fresh OC

with a battleship-grey matrix with sparse metal fleck and shock

veining. Specimens had velvetly black crust.

A couple of years after the fall, I inquired about it to a few dealers

and somebody told me that a scientist at a leading institution said

that Breja would not be classified because it originated from Algeria

and there were legal/ethical issues surrounding it. I don't recall who

exactly said this and I think it was in a private email discussion.

Well, several more years have gone by, and I still wonder about this

old fall when I update my "Recent Falls" meteorite page. And it occurs

to me that there have been many new finds approved in the Met Bull

that come out of Algeria - it doesn't seem to be an issue recently. In

fact, the latest Met Bull update contains three different meteorites

out of Algeria.

So, is Breja not being classified because nobody is trying (nobody has

submitted a sample) or is it because no reputable institution will

touch it? And if the latter, then why not?

Best regards,

MikeG

How did you find out about it?

And Michael,
To second what Mike Farmer said, yes I was there 3 weeks but I would not have
had time for those lectures (even if I had known about them). Also after doing
that show for some 15 years, it seems that visitors fall in 2 categories:
either highly knowledgeable collectors who know exactly what they want and who
came to the Show with a mental list of dealers to see and pieces to look for.
Or visitors who happen to wander in my room out of curiosity and who know
nothing about meteorites. Very few in-betweens.
The first kind would probably not need those presentations, the second kind?
maybe, but how would they hear about it? online? on Facebook??? I am sorry

There was an educational series of lectures during the last Tucson show in in

There were both attendees and online live feeds available for an entrance and

I watched 5 nights during the show from a FB live feed.  This was held by

Hi Michael,

I think your idea has merit but Doug points out some good points. What I would
suggest if you were able to arrange this, first, I'd have presentations and
talks more during the evenings after dinner time. Second, if you were to have a
list of topics that were going to be addressed along with a time line, well
ahead of the Tucson Show, so people could attend areas they were interested in.
Maybe post the topics a week ahead of time before the show and post them again
just before and during the show, I think you would get a steady group of people
that would attend.

Things like this cost money, but a fee to cover and off set costs would be fine
as long as it wasn't too much or you would loose people. Perhaps a fee for each
talk people want to attend. You might also offer some refreshments for a modest
fee to off set the costs. I'd see if you couldn't get a hotel to donate a room
for the talks. This could be all or part of the cost of the meeting room.

I wouldn't appreciate dealers making an info commercial but if they gave solid
science type of program, then fine. I have organized sizable conventions before
(over 300 attendees) and it can be a lot of work but there is a lot of great
scientist that are in the area or attend and I am sure that some of them would
be glad to offer informative talks for the troops during the show. Good luck
and hope you are able to succeed! Best!

Hi Michael,

Time at Tucson is at a premium, and the purpose of it is to get around and see
what's there. Tucson is an exciting place and there is just too much to see.
While some people may have the luxury of time on their hands, with the Internet
at everyone's disposal, you'd have to design things to really be fun or
interesting, IMO.

We have had events at Tucson before so that is not at all true. Just not really
a series of seminars and such. But we had Blood's auction and the Gold Basin
Party, IMCA dinner, Parties organized by members of the community, and it is
common for groups to get together for dinners for time to catch up with each
other. What all these things had in common was that everyone was invited or can
do them, they are fun, and they require no real time commitment. After all, we
also have/had  resources like Meteorite!

Subject: [meteorite-list] Meteorite reclassification questions

As a newbie, I've come to rely pretty heavily on the Meteoritical Bulletin
database for information about particular meteorites as well as to look at
aggregate data for different types.

I've been somewhat surprised to discover that it is not unusual for meteorites
to get reclassified and I was wondering if anybody could tell me how and under
what circumstances a Met Bull entry gets updated to reflect new classification
information.

Ningqiang is a good example of reclassification updates.  The Meteoritical
Bulletin database entry shows that Ningqiang was originally classified as a
CV3, per Meteoritical Bulletin #65 (1987) [1]. Then (if I'm interpreting the
entry correctly) it looks like it was reclassed as a CK3, per the Natural
History Museum's Catalogue of Meteorites, 5th edition (2000).  And a subsequent
reclassification as C3-ung came per the 7th edition of MetBase (2006).

The particular example I had questions about is the entry for Hart, a Texas
meteorite found in 2010 and that was initially classified as a CK3 [2].  CK3 is
a pretty rare carbonaceous chondrite type and Hart was apparently the only
meteorite in the U.S. to get that classification.  However, I recently came
across a scientific paper ("Reclassification of Hart and Northwest Africa 6047:
Criteria for distinguishing between CV and CK3 chondrites" [3]) that appears to
make a persuasive case for Hart being reclassified as a CV3. This paper was
published in 2017, but there is no update yet in the Met Bull entry.

So my questions are:

1) Will the Meteoritical Bulletin database entry for Hart eventually get
updated to reflect a change in classification?

2) What mechanisms (if any) are in place to keep track of these types of
reclassifications and make updates? (From what I've seen, there is a mechanism
for Antarctic meteorites via the Antarctic Meteorite Newsletter. See, for
example AMN item on reclassifications [4] and subsequent Met Bull database
entry update [5].)

3) Is there some body that mediates between competing classification claims?
E.g. what if the original classifier disagrees with a reclassification?

Team Meteorite:
(Not yet for sale) - Lux 1/1 120m2 cabina on 1750m2 of mountaintop at 1000m
altitude in western Costa Rica. Perfect, always spring-like climate. Coffee
removed and replaced with multiple tropical fruits and grafted Haas avocados
thriving on manicured terraces sloping down to rain forest. Sits on huge
aquifer generating endless water. Best sunset views in the country (Pacific
Ocean). Separate rancho for witnessing Scarlet Macaw fly-overs and up to a
dozen toucans sitting in the next tree. Double, concrete-block garage built to
same earthquake-resistant standards as house and designed to be two more
bedrooms and bath. Quartzite countertops, marble shower and coral-rock
fireplace. Spanish floor tiles, wood ceiling beams throughout. The 17th century
window 'bars' copied from a cathedral in Nimes, France were crafted by the same
Italian brothers that did these on my first home here, 'LaQ'. Fifteen running
meters of panoramic windows rise up to the 4.5m high ceilings, offering
dramatic close-up views of mountains cascading-to-the-sea. Property located at
the end of a dirt road and is hidden behind block wall for complete privacy
(and security). Sat and cable TV, high-speed internet.
But in the always slow CR real estate market full of such 'trophy properties',
getting $300,000 cash, same as the expected low-bid on the Iron meteorite
Darryl offered for V-Day, would be difficult.
Does anyone know what the Iron brought at last week's Christie's auction?

Hi Anne -- Bill beat me to it. Basically you have a small asteroid in an orbit
that

is dynamically difficult (but not impossible) to achieve without having
originated

in the earth-Moon system. The aphelion was well inside the orbit of Mars, so the

only way it could get from the Main Belt to the orbit that it occupied
immediately

prior to hitting the earth is via past earth/Moon encounters. The easier path is

via lunar ejecta following a NEO impact.  --Rob

I can answer this, as we got enough data from our meteor cameras to compute an
orbit. It was very similar to that of Earth (semi major axis of 1 AU,
eccentricity < 0.1) with an inclination within 2 standard deviations of that of
the Moon. This means we are either dealing with an evolved orbit (most likely)
or lunar ejecta (much less likely, but not impossible).

Hi Randy,

It hadn't been mentioned yet on the Met-List. I worked this fall last week
(unaware
that Marc Fries had already done so), so the fortunate result of the independent
analysis is that two people came up with the same answer and the exact same
radar returns. (I also analyzed the Carrollton, AL, seismic station data which
has
an unmistakable sonic boom just 106 seconds after the terminal burst of the
bolide.) I'm 100% sure these returns are associated with the fall since they are
practically colocated with the seismometer.

Upper atmospheric winds were high at the time of the fall -- jet stream was
about 125 knots blowing almost due east. This is why the Doppler radar
returns subsequent to the initial high-altitude westerb return at 15 km are
displaced to the east of it. At the altitudes below the 2.5-km altitude radar
cluster, the winds were below 30 knots and blowing more to the southeast
or ESE. This is supported by the small southeastward shift from the central,
linear-looking return, and the wider cluster to its lower right that was
scanned less than a minute later. The first place I would search would be
the southeast edge of the 2.5-km altitude cluster.

Unfortunately, this is a tough search area.  --Rob

[meteorite-list] HUGE meteorite in France

2018-10-19 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list
Hello,

A huge iron meteorite has been found in France. 477 kilos. And 55 000 years old.
It is the St Aubin and now it is the largest meteorite ever found in France,
even bigger than Mon Dieu and La Caille.
And the strewn field has also been figured out.

Here, on behalf of Marc Chapelet who handles the Meteorites Division, are all
the details (in English, below the French version) published by the Societe
Astronomique de France, so it is a serious report. (not a journalistic fantasy).

https://saf-astronomie.fr/decouverte_de_la_plus_grosse_meteorite_francaise/

Enjoy!

2018-09-13 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list
John,
I accept that meteorites have to be cut to study the matrix, and re-cut so more
experts can study it, and cut even smaller in thin-sections to be studied some
more. And I accept that pieces go to collectors for safe keeping and
preservation. But I don’t like meteorites being sliced and diced and minced
into tiny crumbs that are not even recognizable.
As for spheres, skulls, rings, ……and over knick-knacks, No. It is adding insult
to injury.

As for the others, I am told that the rarest ones like Angra were kept in a

Team Meteorite - Very sad news that Brasil's National Museum has suffered a
fire that seems from photos to have burned the building to a skeleton of bare
walls open to the sky. Every possible type of object typically on display or
stored in such a facility, the national heritage of Brasil, is likely damaged
or destroyed. Imagine the Smithsonian turning into 'ashes in a moment'. Some
objects were apparently saved by workers, but no inventory is possible at this
time.

Angra dos Reis (ANGR), the country's most significant meteorite was displayed
there. Anne Black recently submitted a fantastic image of  a specimen for
'Meteorite Picture of the Day'.

The Cat of Mets shows a TKW of 1.5 kg, and the Museum had a single specimen of
101 gms. Oddly, only about another 46 gms. were assigned homes. Where did the
rest go?

Hello,

Saying that a rock is a meteorite simply because it is attracted to a magnet is
wrong. A magnet is only the first of many tests you must do before you can say
that a rock is "perhaps" a meteorite. But you will not know for sure until it
has been analyzed by a specialized lab.

I recommend you study this site very carefully.

graphite) is not a terrestrial rock. It's a meterorite. The difference between
a meteorite and a magnetic terrestrial rock is the latter attracts iron and
nickle too but the former dose not.

Is this idea right?

I work under this idea, yet, many hunters say the meteroites I collected are
not meteroite because they do not look alike a meterorite. And they of course
they are not under This Idea. Mostly they say the Same as this many terrestrial
rock also attract magnet.

I use a Brothers P-Touch labeler as many do here to label meteorite display
box's. The machine always leaves a UN-printed end on each side of the label you
print. I save these "ends" and use them to tape the box's closed.

Anne, List,

The absolute worst sticky tape
to remove is Scotch No. 800 and
similarly formulated varieties
of clear packing tapes.

Years ago, when my family ran
a drugstore, we used Scotch No.
800 to wrap the label onto your
pill bottles because you never
want that kind of label to come
off... ever.

The only two solvents that
would work on that stuff was
petroleum-distillate-based
cigarette-lighter fluid or
acetone, neither of which
is pleasant to work with
and will require a well-
ventilated area.

There is a good but even more
primitive solution to holding
a plastic box shut, but one that
is very effective.

Go to an office supply store
and buy a box of 1/4" (wide)
rubber bands of the right
length to be stretched tight
in one or two wraps around
your packaging. No residue
at all.

[meteorite-list] Boxes sealed with tape.

2018-07-07 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list

Hello to all of you who prepare meteorites, mostly irons.

Please stop sealing those clear plastic boxes with yards and yards of tape. I
have to remove all that tape to be able to open the box and take a good
picture of the specimen, and all that tape leaves a sticky mess that is very
difficult to clean, I often just move the specimen to a new box.
I know you want to seal the box to protect your good work, but really a couple
small tabs along the long edges would be sufficient.

Thank you for considering this request.

In the Famous Collections section you are forgetting the Monnig Collection.
Almost as important as Nininger.

In collection #2, I would add
Belle Plaine
Haxtun
Huckitta
Glorieta Mountain
Tafassasset

and in collection #3, I would certainly add
Nakhla, the real one. Yes, it is available (I have it) ;-)

Subject: [meteorite-list] The "definitive" collector's list of meteorites

Friends,

If only I could do this halfway ... ;-)

Many of you have provided great feedback on what specimens should and should
not be included in this list. In reading your feedback, I, like some of you,
also came to the conclusion that just one list does not make sense. To make
this list consistent, we will assume all specimens are greater than 1g,
unless in very rare instances, micros are really all that are realistically
available. The other thing I realized is that every collection should own
some historic specimens and while some are must-haves, like L'Aigle and
Ensisheim, there are many others where once the collector gets to a certain
point, they should have the education necessary to make the right decision
for their own collections. After carefully reviewing the list, I realized
that like many other similar lists I've seen, there are geographic biases.
For example, Park Forest is a must have for American collectors, but Barwell
or Crumlin is a far better choice for European collectors (even taking into
account the price differences). Finally, I decided to organize the list
levels based on availability and price. There are no post-Antarctic treaty
meteorites on this list for obvious reasons.

Note: This is not the list for type specimen collectors.

Now, from this list, how would you adjust it ...

Thank you to all of you who responded to Zelimir and me.

To make it more complicated they work 3 days, are off 2 days, back at work 3

19th “ENSISHEIM METEORITE 2018” Show news for dealers (May 02, 2018)

Dear meteorite friends,

As already announced earlier this year, the 19th meteorite show is
exceptionally and provisionally moved to another nearby building, due to
important work being done in the Palais de la Regence where an elevator is
being installed. This works will not be finished until early in 2019.
This clearly supposes that next year, the Show will by all means take place
again in the unavoidable Palais de la Regence Palace to celebrate in a
worthwhile manner the 20th anniversary of the Show.

Unfortunately, the genuine Ensisheim meteorite, normally in the Regency
museum, will not be visible this year, but a life-size plaster cast will be
displayed in the Gymnasium hall.

The address of the provisional show hall is:

Gymnase Communal, 20, Rue des Tourterelles, F-68190 ENSISHEIM.

The new “Sports Complex” is located in the middle of a large park, about 250
m (« as the crow flies”) from the Palais de la Regence.

The map (see attachment) is showing the Gymnasium location in respect to the
Palais de le Regence. Just follow the arrows if you are walking or driving.
The previously announced itinerary through the Rue de Colmar is also correct
but not advised because of street works.

The 2 main buildings (the Gymnasium and the Elisatia halls) as well as the
parking places will be clearly signposted.

The “Gymnase Communal” consists in a large 40 x 20 m sports hall where all
the tables are aligned along the walls and also in two double rows
surrounding the middle “Consignment Room” including a small bookshop table.
Something resembling the Munich show layout.

All tables (still 160 x 80 cm) are equivalent but barely lit by sunlight
through skylights so additional lights of your own are strongly recommended.
Please bear in mind that only LED bulbs are acceptable, with a maximum power
of 100 watt per table. Other bulbs are henceforth prohibited.

I will try to arrange the layout of the tables as it was in the main Regency
room, respecting as much as possible the presence of the usual neighbors in
each case.
The new hall is large enough to accommodate all the 2017 participants and
about another dozen of possible newcomers.

It has always been our policy to give to all past dealers priority when it
came to reserving the table(s) they had the preceding year. Those who did
not come in 2017 have lost their priority and should consider themselves as
“newcomers”.

However, since this year we could set up 70 ta

An obvious fake!

The last I checked Kapoeta was a Howardite, not an Ordinary Chondrite.
The crust and matrix are wrong. The presence of numerous chondrules
excludes it. Oxidation halos around metal and the lack of basalt clasts
indicate, even to a complete novice, that this specimen is bogus. The
real Kapoeta was recovered within minutes of hitting the ground and real
examples are near pristine.

Here is the Meteoritcal Bulletin entry for Kapoeta:

https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?sea=Kapoeta=namescontains=50=ge==All=name=All=All===0=Normal%20table=12251

Remember, that one bad specimen can bring an entire collection into
question. It would interesting to see the complete chain of custody on
this piece.

Re: [meteorite-list] Stability of Sericho (Habaswein)

2017-12-04 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list

Hello,

I believe it depends on the pieces and where they were found. I understand that
some were found on salt-flats.
I have a couple that I bought in June from Mike Farmer. One was cut in two
halves, no special treatment, no varnish or lacquer. My customers are not
reporting any problems. They are holding up just fine. Much better than
Admire!!

Hi all,

There seems to be some very stable specimens and also some that will
crumble in your hands. It all depends on where it sat for the last
1000 years.
