[meteorite-list] AD Sotheby's Auction Closes tomorrow!

2022-07-27 Thread Darryl Pitt via Meteorite-list

Hi,

Sotheby’s Meteorite online auction closes at 10:00a EDT (UTC-4). Here is the
bit.ly link to the entire sale:
https://bit.ly/3Pv7c4N

Good opportunities still exist and I can’t overemphasize the wisdom of placing
a modest “walkaway/absentee” bid that might provide a big smile should you be
successful. You may just receive an email that begins, “Congratulations, you
were the successful bidder….”

Here’s a great example. The current bid on Hoba — including a 25% commission —
is now $57/g. Where else would this be possible….and an end piece with great
provenance no less! Here is the bit.ly link: https://bit.ly/3J8FdFJ

Anyway, take a close look. Especially at Gatuto, Al Bir Lahlou 101, Clarendon
(c) — the largest piece that can be privately owned(!), NWA 12520 and Kilabo.

And check out the Seymchan polyhedron — if only just to appreciate and the
Imilac Home Plate from the main mass as well.

Wishing everyone the best of luck in this and more…



And make certain you include the buyer’s commission (25%) when determining the
bid you feel good about!!

[meteorite-list] CORRECTED // ADV – SOTHEBY'S / METEORITES NO RESERVE

2021-11-30 Thread Darryl Pitt via Meteorite-list
Hi!

Hoping I sent this correction in time! 爛

All the best / Darryl

Greetings All,

There is an auction at Sotheby’s which ends this Friday, 3-December with 29
meteorites at no reserve. [Meteorites commence at Lot 88]

There is ALWAYS a great sleeper opportunity at a no-reserve auction. And there
are currently numerous lots which are selling for far less than you could
purchase them for from a dealer — including the auction house buyer’s
commission!

The advice I always share — and always follow — is to enter a bid that feels
good and then forget about it. While it doesn’t happen very often, you are at
least giving yourself the chance to receive an email which congratulates you on
your success — a deal which will result in your being extremely happy
露‍♂️露‍♂️

https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2021/natural-history-2?locale=en

It happens at every auction. Consider the following….

Name / Low Estimate / Current Bid / Price Gram

Henbury / $12,000 / $1,200 / $206/kg
Ghubara / $3,500 / $300 / $0.10/g
Willamette / $2,250 / $1,100 / $63/g
Timbuktu / $2,500 / $500 / $3.75/g
Seymchan pallasite / $14,000 / $3,000 / $5.60/g
Lunar Rabt Spayta 002 / $14,000 / $1,700 / $11.88/g
Ensisheim / $3,000 / $1,000 / $97/g
Lunar NWA 8306 / $12,000 / $1,200 / $12.63/g

There is also a 1200 gram / 3.25 inch diameter Seymchan Sphere whose current
high bid is $5000. A matchless Seymchan — nearly 50kg with a natural hole —
whose high bid is currently $12,000.

Place a bid that feels good and who knows — Christmas may arrive early!

Re: [meteorite-list] SALE: BUR-ABOR, AN INCOMPARABLE METEORITE SPECIMEN – MAIN MASS

2021-05-19 Thread Darryl Pitt via Meteorite-list

Hi Elizabeth,

Bur-Abor is not considered an “unwitnessed fall” by anyone as no such
designation exists. The features of this meteorite are consistent with a
residency on Earth of at least decades — if not centuries...or far more;
Bur-Abor is an outstanding, highly weathered meteorite. Please remedy as we
all get hurt when the line between puffing and misrepresentation is blurred.

Clarification is required. The low estimate is $1,500/g (before commission).

While the reserve is far lower still, NWA 5000 is indeed the preeminent lunar
meteorite of our time.

Re: [meteorite-list] Stability of Sericho (Habaswein)

2017-12-05 Thread Darryl Pitt via Meteorite-list
Hi Everyone…

Just picked up on this thread and I agree with MikeM.

However, more to his point, Gibeon sold for as little as $16/kg — and
spectacular specimens. The Gibeon Owl — the cover lot of the Heritage
Meteorite catalog of several years back — that’s right, acquired for $16/kg.

Certainly there are specimens of Sericho which are wanting, but anyone who
passes on a chance to purchase good material for $2.00/g let alone $0.20/g will
find themselves wanting. If possible, examine the exterior rind before making
an acquisition If the olivine and metallic matrix are clearly articulated,
there’s an excellent chance you’re good. When the exterior surface exhibits a
lack of material differentiation, that’s when serious weathering has occurred
and I would suggest being far more cautious.

All the best / Darryl

Oh my goodness...

Carlos was such a great guy! With deeply heartfelt condolences to Giovanna and
the Oddi Family.

I was not going to mention the following here, but in light of this sad news,
I've been up to my eyeballs producing a cancer research fundraiser (for Drs.
Azra Raza — a member of the Biden Cancer Moonshot Task Force — and Sid
Mukherjee, who won a Pulitzer for "The Emperor of All Maladies"), and if you're
so inclined, please donate now to a cancer research organization of your
choice.

And add the meteorites Berduc and Talampaya to that list. Edwin expressed it
beautifully: Carlos brought so much joy to those who adored him—which is to
say...most anyone who was lucky enough to know him.

Very sad.

Larry was a good, good man who so enjoyed meteorites and especially the
meteorite community—and he was so appreciated in return. If I didn't see Larry
in Tucson, it felt as if something were truly amissand so it will be.

With heartfelt condolences to his family and all those near and dear.

Re: [meteorite-list] Kalahari lunar vs NWA 5000

2016-06-07 Thread Darryl Pitt via Meteorite-list

Folks

NWA 5000 is a spectacular meteorite whose resume did not require enhancing. I
wholly agree there is no lunar that's nicer. That said, Kalahari 009 exists
—it's a fact. I am not going to climb into the details other than to share
that the owner is a paranoid eccentric who has gone to great lengths to remain
anonymous. That's all that is at work here. Nothing nefariousjust put
Occam's Razor back into play. In addition, I know of two other lunar masses
that are larger than NWA 5000—one reassembled and one intact.

Re: [meteorite-list] NWA 5000 Goes Ivy League - NEW Display at Yale!

2016-06-06 Thread Darryl Pitt via Meteorite-list

Hi,

While this is great — many congratulations! — the exhibit headline incorrectly
states that NWA 5000 is "The World's Largest Lunar Meteorite." In the exhibit
description it states that NWA 5000 is the largest lunar meteorite ever
discovered. Despite being uber-cool, NWA 5000 never held this distinction.
Discovered nearly a decade earlier, the Kalahari 009 mass is significantly
larger. In addition, there is a recent lunar which fits together as a jigsaw
which is more than twice as massive (which Tony analyzed many months ago).
Still...very nice. All the best / Darryl

[meteorite-list] REMINDER: Christie's Auction Tomorrow

2016-04-19 Thread Darryl Pitt via Meteorite-list

Hi,

CHRISTIE'S Auction Tomorrow in London. 2.30p / (GMT+1) Catalog –
http://bit.ly/23DlL8D

It's worth noting...

— Several lots have no reserve;

— There is a benefit to those paying in US dollars. Due to currency
fluctuations, CHRISTIE'S current USD auction estimates are about 8% lower than
those printed in the catalogue. To track the current exchange estimates, go to
the CHRISTIE'S website http://bit.ly/1qp6Osq and look at the “grid view” where
the real-time dollar amounts can be compared with those in the downloadable
e-catalogue—which, again, can be seen here: http://bit.ly/23DlL8D

Best of luck,

Darryl

[meteorite-list] AD - CHRISTIE'S DEBUT CATALOG METEORITE AUCTION

2016-04-06 Thread Darryl Pitt via Meteorite-list

Hi,

Meteorites have finally hit the big time as it regards at least one measure:
CHRISTIE'S, the largest and most esteemed auction house in the world, will be
conducting its first dedicated catalog auction of Meteorites on Wednesday,
April 20th in South Kensington, London.

The catalog looks smart <--- (had to throw in a Briticism) and it most
certainly is, as Alan Rubin had a hand in the creation of the descriptive copy.
The images by and large are not so bad as well.

To see a PDF copy of the catalog, go to the following link and click on the
e-catalogue option, and you will see the PDF option

http://www.christies.com/salelanding/index.aspx?intSaleID=26216

There are close to 80 meteorites in the sale. Several have no reserve. Many
have museum provenance. The Zagami main mass—it's here. As is the only
"starstruck" lunar specimen

Academy Award winning actor Kevin Spacey (L.A. Confidential, American Beauty)
had a piece of the Moon in his pocket as he sang “Fly Me to the Moon” on
November 9, 2014 at the Thelonious Monk Institute’s “All-Star Gala Concert: A
Tribute to President Bill Clinton” at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
Twenty-two other luminaries touched this same piece of the Moon that evening
and signed their names to a document that states, “I touched the Moon at the
Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz All Star Jazz Salute to Bill Clinton.”
Signatories include Herbie Hancock, Pharell Williams, Goldie Hawn, Don Cheadle,
Dianne Reeves and Quincy Jones…and, of course, Mr. Spacey. (President Clinton's
secret service detail wouldn't allow him to touch it—which was rather odd in
the scheme of things.) The winning bidder receives the Moon touched by the
stars as well as the documentation. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this
lot will benefit the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, the world’s largest
non-profit devoted to nurturing excellence in jazz.

All the best / Darryl

Hi,

While I take your point and understand your frustration, you've violated the
most fundamental canon of journalistic ethics by extracting a passage from a

modified.

Your gratuitous addition of the president's middle name is a point I do not
take to at all: bigotry is not welcome here.

Re: [meteorite-list] aziz habibi and his bad behavior

2014-10-03 Thread Darryl Pitt via Meteorite-list

Hi,

Mohamed rendition is in-part incorrect.

Aziz has been in contact with the owner for quite some time now, and as Rachid,
myself and others can attest, the trigger to Habibi's interest was certainly
not the interest expressed by Mohamed this past weekend. In an effort
sanctioned by Rachid, Aziz had been operating at my request.

I've never experienced more misinformation and disinformation dispensed in the
commerce of meteorites than in the matter pertaining to this one stone. Why
the ever-evolving narrative? in addition to a newly spirited competitiveness
between buyers, the seller has played each and every buyer off one another with
doses of disinformation.

Hi,

When Mohamed inferred his interaction with the seller was this past
Saturday—that was a detail I could speak to. Given the reframing, I can only
say this story has more wrinkles than a retirement home. It has also,
unfortunately, been a banquet of missteps, false accusations and greed.

That said, I remain steadfast in my belief that an honest seller is the fulcrum
between honest and dishonest outcomes. Specifically, it is a fact that the
written contract to which Mohamed referred is not the only written contract to
have been violated in this matter.

As for the specimen itself, I have every reason to believe it is in transit on
its way to me—and thus the pent-up sentiments now being broadcast on the list.

Re: [meteorite-list] LOVINA

2014-04-05 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi Paul,

Sounds like an interesting vacation.

On February 14th I posted detailed correspondence to the list concerning the
publication of what was then an upcoming LPSC abstract on Lovina which I had
instigated with Qingzhu Yin of University of California Davis. Here is the
link: http://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2014/pdf/1434.pdf

It now seems clear Lovina is terrestrial. At the same time, in the words of
several meteoriticists, Lovina is far more rare than a typical iron meteorite.
Given that its elemental signature—including elemental ratios—so closely
approximates that of an iron meteorite, Lovina is a fascinating link between
the terrestrial and extraterrestrial. In addition, given its ziggurat
(pyramidal) structure, Lovina is the single finest specimen of awaruite known,
and your dad would do quite should he find more.

All the best / Darryl

might have been a Lodranite. (That was back when lodranites were still
grouped by some as a stony-iron due to their high metal content.)

These part slices, while small, dramatically exhibit a fine Widmanstatten

Some of these have a larger iron portions while others have more silicates.
I struggle to determine which I personally like best...they all, while
different to some extent, look awesome.

I have seen very little of this rare rock on the market, although in my

prettier than any Lodranite I have seen.

[meteorite-list] LOVINA REVISITED

2014-02-14 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi,

For those who have followed the saga of Lovina:

Found in Bali, Indonesia, Lovina was classified as an ungrouped iron in early
2008; at the end of the same year I acquired the entire mass. Lovina's hallmark
feature are ziggurat (pyramidal) structures which measure up to two
centimeters. It seems these structures formed while Lovina was in solution in
the tropical shallows from which it was recovered. I had been offering
specimens for sale when the Smithsonian expressed interest in acquiring the
main mass in late 2009—and I first stopped selling specimens when Tim McCoy
doubted Lovina's meteoricity. Sales recommenced when new evidence from an
esteemed colleague of Tim's resulted in the determination Lovina was indeed a
meteorite. Months later sales were again discontinued—through this day—when
additional news from multiple sources (Wasson, Nishiizuma) rolled in which
contradicted the positive findings.

Lovina bears uncanny similarities to the composition of an iron meteorite. If
this wasn't a meteorite, what was it? I had heard several theories, and I had
gone to lengths to have the same verified. Some scientists felt it was slag—a
notion dismissed by most. Others would only speak to me off-record, as they
felt their hypothesis might be ridiculed by colleagues. One thing I've learned
is that if there is doubt about the meteoricity of an object, it is not easy to
find a meteoriticist to do more work on it.

Well, early last year I was so grateful to meet Qingzhu Yin of University
California at Davis and Yangting Lin of the Key Laboratory of the Earth's Deep
Interior in Beijing. Yangting's affiliation in particular was of great interest
to me given a couple of the seemingly rogue hypotheses to which I previously
alluded. A dinner in Beijing with Qingzhu and Yangting—at which Lovina
dominated the conversation—resulted in Qingzhu's profound interest in Lovina;
an interest which culminated in an LPSC abstract entitled New Insights Into
the Origin of Lovina, a Mystery Metal, which can be seen here:
http://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2014/pdf/1434.pdf

Verdict: while it was determined not to be a meteorite by Qingzhu and his
co-authors, Lovina is nonetheless an important find that is extraordinarily
rare. The section of the mass with ziggurats has been preserved intact; it is
certain a museum is in its future.

All best / Darryl

a must-visit for seeing early videos.

Unfortunately, I'm of the opinion that the San Luis Potosi videos
are an elaborate hoax, as the meteor cannot be confirmed using one
of my reliable sources. There was no bright meteor over central
Mexico at any time from 4 pm to 6 pm local time (CDT) on 21 August,
 which corresponds to 21:00-23:00 UT.

Apparently I'm not the only one of this opinion. Dirk forwarded me
the following link that he received from someone who has picked
apart the four videos. You can judge for yourself, but I think he/she
has found some subtle glitches and oversights that call into
 question their validity:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F7ySYpB1RMfeature=youtu.be

I am also bothered by the mismatch between the reported time of the
fall (~5:25 pm) and the sun's elevation angle -- particularly in
the church video. The sun appears to be very high in the sky for
so late in the day. And where are all the witness reports, or
 stories in Mexican newspapers?

Finally, two of the videos are too lucky, in the sense that they
just happened to be recording something rather un-video-worthy (some
random train from a car, and a poorly framed church tower) and
 the meteor magically appears.

Peter, Rob, Folks

First of all, the article in question appears to not be written by the Guardian

Secondly

In my case, press releases are written by a third party, usually with little
or no knowledge of meteorites, but with a whole bunch of enthusiasm. Perhaps
a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. I rarely get to read and approve
 them, sadly.

I can promise there were not more than three press releases issued—if that.
Rob, I personally find it curious that as a major collector offering a portion
of your collection you would not insist on press release approval in the effort
to help sell the sale on its merits and get things right—should that be of
concern. To be precise, for those of us that cultivate major media I believe
it's incumbent on us to police the messages being disseminated as best we
can—because necessarily some details will be tortured.

However, in this particular article, there are so very many spurious claims—too
many, in fact, for it to be so readily dismissed.

Sincerely,

Darryl

p.s. For those unaware, I offered the first collection of meteorites ever to
be made available at auction (Phillips 1995) and helmed the largest meteorite
auction ever (Heritage at over $1M hammer). Take note, neither project was
with Lyon Turnbull, the only auctioneers known to specialise in meteorite
sales. What a joke. (And please do consider that an auction house which has
no sense of reality is a very dangerous entity with whom to conduct business.)

and what he intended to convey in the interview. Having experienced a similar

former television and newspaper journalist on the pitfalls and dangers
associated with press interviews. I have to say I was a very illuminating
day. Not just hearing from this very experienced reporter, but seeing actual
examples of TV interviews where things went badly wrong and the how the words
actually said on screen were creatively edited to achieve maximum
embarrassment for the interviewee. What Rob says, or alludes to, about
reporters/journalists is true in that they basically have very limited
knowledge of the subject they write about, but are still required to file a
story that will grab people's attention by distorting the facts and
misrepresenting the interviewee. The old journalistic saying about never
letting the facts get in the way of a good story has more than a hint of the
truth about it. Rob is an experienced and knowledgeable meteorite

 permissions.

Anne, The Guardian newspaper is one of the few UK newspapers I actually read.
It consistently and (usually) accurately reports the news and it is fearless
in tacking our increasingly right-wing government and its very obvious
shortcomings. I am certain this is just a blip and I would urge all list

Sunday paper the Observer) when they want to find out anything about the UK

Re: [meteorite-list] SPACE EXPO - OFF TOPIC (TANGENTIALLY)

2013-02-27 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi

I want to thank everyone for their input. For those taking their first peek, I
would like to know the coolest things you've experienced at an
exploratorium/museum that pertain to space and space travel—or any other ideas
you have pertaining to the same.

As it regards further details of the expo in which I'm involved

There will be approximately 30,000 square feet devoted to this endeavor which
will take place in the most modern exhibition venue in Tel Aviv. (There was a
jazz festival which occurred in the same space last year and the production
(sound lights, staging, rigging, set design) was among the best I've
experienced).

The exhibition will contain space memorabilia as well as detailed, full-size
replicas of Mercury and Apollo capsules (the latter was used in the film
Apolllo 13)—as well as the replica of the space shuttle cockpit used in all big
budget films and advertisements. And there will be meteorites! (I mean, after
they ramped me in, how could there not be ;-) as well as the Peekskill
Meteorite Car.

There is a lot of room for possibilities for both group as well as individual
exploratorium experiences. It is estimated that over the course of the summer
225,000 visitors will spend on-average approximately 2 1/2 hours at the
exhibit, so there is not much that can be done in terms of small group let's
build this efforts. To use Larry's phraseology, most of this exhibit is
geared to wandering by.

Hoping this further clarifies the nature of this event. Keep those ideas
rollingLarry, please send me your number, I can't seem to find it.

All the best and thanks again / Darryl

Yes, a little more information would be good.

How much space (no pun) do you have (floor or table)? How interactive do
you want it to be and how many people are there to support what you do?
Some activities can be done without a person involved others need a real
 person to run it.

Building (and commenting) on what Peter suggested with respect to
activities we have done in large venues:

Solar System scale model: takes some space and better if you use one that
is not just stringing them out in a line. You can do size comparison
separate from distance and there are ways to actually have them make the
planet with clay, but this takes time.

Comet making can be fun, but for a large venue, probably best to do as a
demo. Takes supplies and can get messy.

I just did a variation of our Earth/Moon size and distance where you have
50 balls of clay and put them into two piles (totaling 50) to represent
the size of the Moon relative to the Earth (40 and 10, 35 and 15, etc.)
and then do the relative distance. Works well with hundreds going by over
 time.

What you can do depends on the venue and the age group and whether or not
they just wander by or you have them in a group.

I could continue this conversation off line, if you want.

 Larry

 Hi Darryl,

 Just a few quick thoughts:

Scale model of the solar system
Meteorite hunting in a salted strewn field with magnet canes
digital polarizing microscope with a cool thin section

 Mars rover race
 Make a comet
 telescope observing

Many of these ideas may not work for you. Could you tell us more about the
 event?

peek, I would like to know the coolest things you've experienced at an
exploratorium/museum that pertain to space and space travel-or any other
ideas you have pertaining to the same.

As it regards further details of the expo in which I'm involved

There will be approximately 30,000 square feet devoted to this endeavor
which will take place in the most modern exhibition venue in Tel Aviv.
(There was a jazz festival which occurred in the same space last year and
the production (sound lights, staging, rigging, set design) was among the
 best I've experienced).

The exhibition will contain space memorabilia as well as detailed, full-size
replicas of Mercury and Apollo capsules (the latter was used in the film
Apolllo 13)-as well as the replica of the space shuttle cockpit used in all
big budget films and advertisements. And there will be meteorites! (I mean,
after they ramped me in, how could there not be ;-) as well as the
 Peekskill Meteorite Car.

There is a lot of room for possibilities for both group as well as
individual exploratorium experiences. It is estimated that over the course
of the summer 225,000 visitors will spend on-average approximately 2 1/2
hours at the exhibit, so there is not much that can be done in terms of
small group let's build this efforts. To use Larry's phraseology, most of
this exhibit is geared to wandering by.

Hoping this further clarifies the nature of this event. Keep those ideas
rollingLarry, please send me your number, I can't seem to find it.

All the best and thanks again / Darryl

Yes, a little more information would be good.

How much space (no pun) do you have (floor or table)? How interactive
do you want it to be and how many people are there to support what you do?
Some activities can be done without a person involved others need a
 real person to run it.

Building (and commenting) on what Peter suggested with respect to
activities we have done in large venues:

Solar System scale model: takes some space and better if you use one
that is not just stringing them out in a line. You can do size
comparison separate from distance and there are ways to actually have
them make the planet with clay, but this takes time.

Comet making can be fun, but for a large venue, probably best to do as
a demo. Takes supplies and can get messy.

I just did a variation of our Earth/Moon size and distance where you
 have
50 balls of clay and put them into two piles (totaling 50) to
represent the size of the Moon relative to the Earth (40 and 10, 35
and 15, etc.) and then do the relative distance. Works well with
 hundreds going by over time.

What you can do depends on the venue and the age group and whether or
not they just wander by or you have them in a group.

I could continue this conversation off line, if you want.

[meteorite-list] SPACE EXPO - OFF TOPIC (TANGENTIALLY)

2013-02-26 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi,

I could really use some assistance, please.

I am involved in a SPACE EXPO and we're in the process of determining what the
most fun interactive exhibits might be for children who are 8-14.

With the foregoing in mind, what are some of the best interactive exhibits
you've seen that pertain to space or space travel? Any ideas or great
experiences that you or your kids had would be much appreciated. Thanks so
much!

A couple of simple examples:

—Child ascends a scale to see how much she weighs on Earth.she moves over
to the next scale which is calibrated to reveal how much she would weigh on the
Moonshe then moves over to the next scale to see how much she would weigh
on Jupiter.

—Child Walks on the Moon. [There is a lunar fragment encased in a Lucite
brick that a child can walk on, and so they are in effect Walking on the Moon.

Thanks again for sharing your faves—and if it's currently exhibited, I would
appreciate your mentioning the name of the institution. Thanks!

Best / Darryl

[meteorite-list] Advert / NWA 7397 (MARS) ONLY $200/g

2013-02-07 Thread Darryl Pitt

HI,

Last year Backplate.net acquired the single 2.130 kg mass of NWA 7397*

Additional fragments of material paired to NWA 7397 have since been recovered,
and in recent days specimens have been sold in Tucson for $300/gram.

Backplate.net has more than one kilogram of such fragments, many with crust
(there appears to be no more than five kilos in total, including the original
designated mass)—and are delighted to offer the same for only $200/gram.

http://www.backplate.net/spec_nwa7397_s02.htm

One day soon we believe this offering will be viewed as an extraordinary
opportunity (and a historic low for a planetary in 2013).

Visit Blaine Reed at the Ramada (#134) or contact Dave Gheesling, now in
Tucson, or send an email to i...@backplate.net to take advantage of the
same—while specimens lasts.

All the best / Darryl

Re: [meteorite-list] NWA 7034 / saharite

2013-01-26 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi,

Saharite is a term I coined many years ago for the crenelated fulgurites from
the Sahara that I believed merited a special moniker—and it's a term which
never stuck.

The references are few and far between and most citations are either my auction
description copy or cribbed from the same.

While not virgin, the use of the term is unproblematic.

Now that you are at NASA you can appreciate the perverse things people
do with words just to come up with a cool acronym. Making the new

measures, like giving NWA 7034 Basaltic Breccia Black Beauty a new

Re: [meteorite-list] Old guy braves the snakes and snails to hunt for meteorites!

2012-12-15 Thread Darryl Pitt

Terrific read.

Well done and thank you!

On Dec 15, 2012, at 12:35 AM, Edwin Thompson wrote:

The summer of 2012 started early for someone from rainy Oregon with a fun
trip for father and son to chase after a new fall in Coloma, CA. The first
trip to the new strewn field was ten days long and only a few days after the
fall. Having the bordello room upstairs at the Sierra House hotel turned out
to be a valuable advantage. With a bar and restaurant downstairs and being
the only road house in the small, historic gold discovery town, meteorite
hunters turned up there every night to compare notes. On the weekends the
crew from SETI and NASA Ames would meet there for large group dinners always
dog tired from another day of covering ground. The Coloma/Lotus area is on a
beautiful section of the American river. It was easy to get to know local
residents there. Since the primary activity during the summer is rafting the
river everyone in the area is used to the summer growth in population. The
town seems to have more than its share of young and attractive girls who
often talk about what they know is coming each summer. They have a common
saying in Coloma; you don’t lose a boyfriend, you just lose a turn.
Except for the poison oak, the ticks, the dreaded star thistle and the heat,
this strewn field was a delightful paradise. The smell of bay trees roasting
in the hot, dry, mountain air was an olfactory delight. The sounds of
splish-splashers laughing and whooping and hollering their way down the
roaring rapids of deliciously cool, clear American river water made one feel
like this was a vacation. And the gentle breezes that cut through the dry,
hot Sierra foothill air were a welcome relief. After ten days it was really
hard to return home to rainy, old Oregon. So much so that it was just that
easy to rush home, pack up the trailer, reserve an extended stay at the
Campground in Coloma and head right back down for the summer. It made sense,
the summer was already planned for a lengthy, determined search in eastern
Oregon for the fall there some five years ago and this witnessed fall in
Coloma was a bird in the hand since pieces were being found.
Since the summer rush had not yet arrived it was easy to get a camp site just
feet from the river’s edge. A number of the camper’s live there year round so
it was much like home after the first week, getting to know the neighbors and
getting settled in. The only difference was that large bright ball of solar
heat supply overhead that comes much earlier in the season for the folks of
the Golden State. With the predictable sunshine comes other elements such as
blistering afternoon temperatures and the legendary rattlesnakes not one of
which was seen by this meteorite hunter in over three months of days out in
the bush. This was truly disappointing. The dollars spent on snake gaiters
and a go-pro camera seemed a waste. And being a serious admirer of reptiles
it was hard to hear all of the stories of sightings and not to get to see one
up close and in person. The days were filled with other sightings; king
snakes, colorful skinks of all sizes, coyotes, foxes, turkeys galore, loads
 of deer and one bobcat.
The hills and mountains were surprisingly steep. Mount Murphy, Mount Clark
and Discovery Mountain were all tough going but the most difficult aspect of
covering steep terrain were the small oval dried oak leaves that covered the
hillsides in several layers and more than once proved to be more slippery
than skates on ice. Over time it became difficult to tell which was more
painful; blistered feet or a bruised backside.
Not wanting to join the foray of hunters asking permission to hunt the
private land that peppered the main body of the strewn field the decision was
made to focus efforts on what might be the area where the bigger masses might
have landed. After spending a week in Dave Moore Park and two weeks in
Magnolia and on the river trails it was time to focus on Cronin ranch and
 then on to Rattlesnake Bar.
Cronin Ranch was work, to say the least. Seventeen hundred acres of hillside,
star thistle and poison oak (the enemy). As summer progressed, days flying by
like time travel, it got hotter earlier. To beat the heat meant getting up at
four a.m. and getting out to hunt at daylight. It was easy to stop by three
p.m. as that was when the water in the hydration pack ran out almost with
religious perfection. Shower at four, dinner at five, bed by eight and up
again long before the eyes were willing to crack open. It seemed like a good
waste of summer sunshine and cool sleep time but determination to find a
hidden treasure or the hope of doing so can be a massive motivator.
The days sped by like never before. The occasional hunter or ‘zombie’ could
infrequently be spotted off in the distance. After the second month in Cronin
 Ranch it was

Re: [meteorite-list] Auction Questions Answered

2012-08-04 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi,

Your disapproval of the protocols of a large, serious auction house fascinates.

Given the depth of such feelings, I am surprised I received more than a half
dozen emails from you the past three weeks in your desire to have the NWA 5000
main mass included in the upcoming Heritage Meteorite Auction…and when I felt I
had no choice but to pass on your proposal, you then turned to someone else at
Heritage---and the consignment was again rejected after multiple solicitations
were again made.

Given your note below, can we now expect to see the NWA 5000 main mass in
Michael Blood's upcoming auction?

 Hi Michael and List Members,

Your fees seem reasonable to me, especially after checking out some auction
houses that charge a 20% seller premium plus a 20% buyer's premium equaling
an outrageous 40%. Then catalog fees are added on top of that figure.
Perhaps you can answer a few questions for me?

Why do some auction houses charge a buyers premium to begin with? It seems
that this practice confuses bidders and is misleading. I know it confuses me
trying to make a quick multiplication in my head during live bidding. Why
should the buyer have to pay this extra amount? It seems the seller should
be pay a straight percentage like most auction sites do including eBay. When
you bid on storage units, houses, cars or what have you, what you bid is what
you pay. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

Imagine if all businesses added a 20% buyers premium to their products and I
am not talking about sales tax. What purpose does it serve? I believe in
 simplicity,

 Best Regards,

 Adam

[meteorite-list] HERITAGE METEORITE AUCTION - FINAL CALL FOR CONSIGNMENTS

2012-07-09 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi Everyone,

This October 14th at the Fletcher Sinclair Mansion in New York City a rather
fantastic meteorite auction will be hosted by Heritage Auctions---the world's
premier collectibles auctioneer.

While the auction is pretty much complete, I am still interested in historic
meteorites with associated collateral (e.g., historic documents,
correspondence, catalog cards) or just plain interesting objects associated
with the subject we love---the older the better.

If you have something remarkable which you would like to sell---with an
attractive reserve---please let me know off list.

This is the last call for what I guarantee will be a memorable event.

All the best / Darryl

No fence. (I asked as I was also bewildered). Reportedly found at the edge of

 Hi Darryl,

Either you run with it or you give it back. But posting the pictures of the
etch pattern should be pretty good evidence of some of the larger transported
 falls.

Lots of explanations could account for the meteorite (the prior owner died
and the rock stayed on the porch --- it's happened before ...etc.), but if we
listen to Jefferson, while it would be easier to believe they are lying, the
facts are what must be established. What do you have to lose? If you don't
want to risk time and money, just see if they'll fax a release giving you
permission to have it analyzed and just for your own protection slip in that
they represent in good faith that the meteorite is their property and
presented to you as an unknown for verification (which you mention is what
gives them the right to have it analyzed since meteorites can be valuble)...

Good luck, if it's a scam, bring it on. Let's see those pix...After all, no
obvious match on the etch is great news no matter how you *slice* it. If the
etch matches a large widely distributed fall, but they insisted and you
wanted out,you could always offer to take a nice slice to pay your expenses
in case it turns out to be common. Does that make sense?

 Kindest wishes
 Doug

This fellow said that just after he moved in a year ago, he found it on the
embankment of his backyard just beyond which is a 75 foot escarpment. The
wife said she tried to throw the rusty thing out a couple of times and both
times he rescued it from the garbage. It is a medium octahedrite which
weighs 4.236 kg. How do I know it's a medium octahedrite? I could make out
a feint pattern underneath a veneer of rust on the cut face. Yes, roughly
speaking, this fellow found a cut and prepared meteorite in his backyard.

The fellow left the specimen in my possession and agreed to allow me to have
a sample removed and forwarded for analysis. I advised him there could be a
problem here that could be readily determined---and he didn't seem fazed.
While I've been accused of being naive, I nonetheless genuinely believe he

Hi,

If the circumstances of the find are erroneous, then the question of rightful
ownership and provenance arises.

I personally think it's incumbent on us all to ask a lot of questions as it
regards meteorite end pieces being found in a backyards.

an existing meteorite and that will then dictate it's valueif it

 Hi Darryl,

Either you run with it or you give it back. But posting the pictures of
the etch pattern should be pretty good evidence of some of the larger
 transported falls.

Lots of explanations could account for the meteorite (the prior owner
died and the rock stayed on the porch --- it's happened before ...etc.),
but if we listen to Jefferson, while it would be easier to believe they
are lying, the facts are what must be established. What do you have to
lose? If you don't want to risk time and money, just see if they'll fax
a release giving you permission to have it analyzed and just for your
own protection slip in that they represent in good faith that the
meteorite is their property and presented to you as an unknown for
verification (which you mention is what gives them the right to have it
analyzed since meteorites can be valuble)...

Good luck, if it's a scam, bring it on. Let's see those pix...After

[meteorite-list] HELP PLEASE - PECULIAR METEORITE DISCOVERY....

2012-02-13 Thread Darryl Pitt

Folks,

I need your help; there is a problem here---I'm just not certain as to its
nature.

A seemingly honest fellow from Sandy Hook, NJ came to my office late today in
the hope I could verify what he was told could be a meteorite---and it is.

This fellow said that just after he moved in a year ago, he found it on the
embankment of his backyard just beyond which is a 75 foot escarpment. The wife
said she tried to throw the rusty thing out a couple of times and both times he
rescued it from the garbage. It is a medium octahedrite which weighs 4.236 kg.
How do I know it's a medium octahedrite? I could make out a feint pattern
underneath a veneer of rust on the cut face. Yes, roughly speaking, this
fellow found a cut and prepared meteorite in his backyard.

The fellow left the specimen in my possession and agreed to allow me to have a
sample removed and forwarded for analysis. I advised him there could be a
problem here that could be readily determined---and he didn't seem fazed.
While I've been accused of being naive, I nonetheless genuinely believe he and
his wife are honestbut I just don't get it.

Any thoughts here? Northeastern New Jersey. End piece. Medium octahedrite.
4.2 kg.

I'll get a pic posted tomorrow.

All best and thanks / d,

Re: [meteorite-list] Large Tissint donated to the NHM....!

2012-02-08 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi,

For purposes of clarity, Dave was not the benefactor referred to in the piece
and I was not on the ground In Morocco searching for this meteorite. Neither
Dave or myself spoke to the wrtier. The aspect of the Natural History Museum's
press release which referenced our role in this acquisition was constrained to
the following:

Darryl Pitt of the Macovich Collection in New York City, and Dave Gheesling of
the Falling Rocks Collection in Atlanta, sold the main mass to the Natural
History Museum. Pitt finally acquired the meteorite after having heard rumors
as to its existence over a period of weeks. With every lead turning into a
dead end, he nearly gave up when he received a fateful phone call. Pitt
reached out to his friend Gheesling to assist with the financing, and shortly
thereafter reached out to the NHM. Said Pitt, It is both humbling and an
honor to be part of this meteorite's journey, and the Natural History Museum is
the perfect final residence. Added Gheesling, Both Darryl and I enjoy giving
talks to kids about meteorites, and while we could have earned far more selling
this specimen elsewhere, there was no discussion of this historic specimen
going anywhere other than a major museum for future generations to enjoy.

Yes, we could have earned far more selling this elsewhere, yet we agreed this
belonged in a major museum. It was a donor of the Natural History Museum, who
prefers to remain anonymous, who helped make the acquisition possible.

[meteorite-list] Advert / Governador Valadares Sells Today - eBay

2012-01-16 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi Everyone,

In approximately eight hours at 3:49p Pacific Standard Time (6:49p EST /
00:49a CET), a slice of the most difficult to obtain nakhlite publicly
available, Governador Valadares, will be sold on eBay.

The specimen weighs 0.205 grams and has some fusion crust. The reserve is $500
or approximately $2500/g---an unheard of valuation, and a gesture to our
community. While I don't recall the precise amount, there is less than 30
grams of GV circulating in the private sector---and that's all there will be,
as the true TKW is less than 100gthe Catalogue of Meteorites entry not
withstanding.

[meteorite-list] ADVERT / Governador Valadares New Shergottite

2012-01-11 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi,

GOVERNADOR VALADARES

A small specimen of GV (0.205g) with one edge of glossy fusion crust(!) is now
on eBay. XTREMELY rare. Offering ends in several days.

NEW MARTIAN SPECIMENS FROM THE TATA FOUMZGIT(?) EVENT

I've added about a eight new specimens to the Macovich site. After I sell
these specimens I will be temporarily out of material---apart from some small
sub-gram specimens and a couple of larger specimens I'm now holding onto.
Ranging in price from $375 - 800 per gram (the latter being a complete specimen
that weighs less than a gram), here are some outstanding examples of the new
shergottite offered to you at prices which will soon be a distant memory. The
$375/g fragmentsmake that $350/g if you mention you saw it heremy last
two!

VANITY MARS

Anyone who has a preference for the letter E (or depending upon your
perspectivethe letter M or Wor the number 3) should have an
especial interest in this SNC, as its shock veins and crust evoke these
referenced characters. Couldn't resist the ET in recognition of my pala
convalescing purveyor of meteorite baseball caps and more.

[meteorite-list] TKW New Shergottite from Tata

2012-01-03 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi,

The 0.652 gram specimen of the new shergottite from Tata sold on ebay for $315
or $483/g.

I was asked what prompted my first auction on eBay. Candidly, I had been
thinking about doing this for a really long time. (Facebook is next ;-)
Given the number of fragments associated with this fall, and my being advised I
was the first U.S. dealer to have received material, it just seemed like the
perfect moment to do so. My next auction offering will include a small
specimen of the most difficult to obtain Martian meteorite publicly available:
Governador Valadares. Look for it later today or tomorrow.

==

TKW of the New Shergottite from Tata

There has been a lot of banter concerning the TKW of this extraordinary
meteorite. Some folks have suggested there are nearly twenty kilos and that
there will be more than enough for everyone while other have expressed a more
constrained amount of material. It would appear a hybrid of both statements
is accurate.

Numerous sources on whom I've long relied assure me we are ultimately looking
at less than 10 kg of material. However, there IS more than enough for
everyone! Apparently numerous meteorites shattered on impact after having
struck a rocky outcropping, and exploded into THOUSANDS of sub gram fragments.
If there was ever a planetary that did not have to be sliced (except for thin
section needs) and where cut loss does not factor into the economicsthis is
it. Even at $1000/g or more, a price point we should anticipate in the near
future, specimens will be within reach.

In the meantime, I still have a few specimens for sale here:
http://www.rocksfromspace.org/MARS.html

If you're interested in additional sub-gram specimens, please contact me off
list.

If you haven't already done so, you want to acquire a bit of this meteorite as
soon as possible. You do not want to be one of the folks muttering I can't
believe I didn't buy [Sanctioned Name] when it first hit the market Christmas
2011

All the best / Darryl

Re: [meteorite-list] Darryl Pitt's TATA MARTIAN auction

2011-12-31 Thread Darryl Pitt

Okay

More first auction hiccups.

I asked Lucas (who as some of you know works in the music biz aspect of what we
do) to set up the auction on eBay. I later mentioned to Luke there were a
handful of typos in the copy and that the headline should have contained the
word meteorite.

I just learned Luke thought he could fix thisand it seems he inadvertently
took down the auction. It's now back up (with the corrections) and still
ending tomorrow, but the specimen is now much cheaper! ;-)

It's listed as this

METEORITE - NEW TATA MARS SHERGOTTITE 0.652 GRAMS

So very sorry for the inconvenience, folks. Ugh!

From a very loud office in Times Squareonce gain, wishing everyone a
really terrific year! Warmly / Darryl

because of my first eBay auction ever?! ;-)

Seriously, this is obviously a spectacular meteorite which is worth far more
than the current prices at which it has been available both here and in
Morocco.

(My understanding is that apart from a handful of noteworthy specimens and
dust, the supply in Morocco is largely exhaustedand I imagine I will soon
be out of material as well.)
