MERCER, Pa. (KDKA) — There is a mystery surrounding a strange-looking rock
that came crashing through the ceiling of a Mercer County business.
It happened sometime late Thursday night or early Friday morning.
Employees of the business discovered the shiny, sharp-looking object
inside their warehouse Friday morning.

2013-03-17 Thread Jimski47
I have to agree with the Count. I've seen metal content within type
specimens range wildly. Some even have metal blebs that would lead you to think

it's a stoney iron using a magnet test.

I think you may be oversimplifying the composition of individuals and

process creates a meteorite involves the surety of an equal distribution of
elements throughtout by volumn.

Some areas of the meterorite is gonna have more metal and some ain't. That
would acount for a specimen having different lithographies like Almahatta
Sitta for ezample.

I'm operating on short info here, but I think ya'll get the drift. But,to
answer one of your queries, all nine of my little Pultusk looking peas of
Chebarkul had the same unscientifically measured attraction to a neo magnet.

Hello Graham and Count and the rest of the Listers

By chance with any of the people on here with multiple samples do you
have photos of them grouped together to compare the bunch. Also, I think
someone said Mike Farmer had posted an image/s of the them grouped together,
is
there a link, cause I missed that posting.

Count/ when you tested the chelyabinsk fragments with a magnet, were they
all consistent on how they stuck to and pulled from the neo magnet for the
most part?
I also have a question for the List about the magnet test.

I have a small rare earth magnets which they are strong, but not super
super strong. My question is, with some of the historic meteorites I have,
can over time, the strength at which a LL or L or even a H meteorite increase
over time, due to oxidation and or rusting? Why I ask is because is
because I have two meteorite samples that fell in 1803 and both are from
France,
but two different falls and are both L6. One sample is is less magnetic than
the other. The one that is stronger has about the same attraction and
pull to a H7 Forest City meteorite. All three meteorites come from top dealers
and collectors, so I know the authenticity is genuine, but it seems some
stones can have anomalys within, when tested with magnets. Has any other
listers noticed this, and if so, why would this happen? I have also heard that
some dealer has devised a full proof test to test stoney meteorites to see
if they are LL L or H or HH, or did I just make up HH :)

Mostly small individuals of less than three grams, black even fusion crust, no
other coloration, regs, no cracking except for a few fracturing in flight
with the result that the interior lithography is covered by black fusion

Hi Gary,

I use a product called Bar Keepers Friend to freshen up my etched irons.
It comes in a powder and liquid form. Get the powder one. You can find it
in the cleanser isle of most grocery stores or Walmart. Wet the etched
surface with warm water then mix the Bar Keepers Friend into a paste, then
gently apply it to your etched surface. I use my finger to rub it gently for
about 2 minutes. Then rinse with water, then soak in alcohol, then dry in an
oven, then soak in ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid), wipe dry and your
good to go.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite?

2011-11-30 Thread Jimski47
Hi Doug and List,

After doing some research and talking to Randy Korotev I believe that this
stone is a glacier deposited Basalt. Can't be 100% certain that the grains
are iron. There all less than 1mm in size and hard to see. I have found
basalts in the past with iron flakes and olivine so I think it's very possible
that the grains are iron. I posted some photo's of a couple of the iron
bearing basalts that I found over the years on the Meteorite Junction site.

This rock would be a great candiditate to put up on your website of
wrongs in my opinion, the interior of the first image is very tricky.

I think you are agreeing that it would be difficult to find reduced
metal in an otherwise hematite rich matrix for terrestrial rocks. Does
anyone else have any thoughts on that (which include natural
meteorwrongs or meteorites?)

I measure the specific gravity of most of the rocks that people send
me. The book values for the SG of hematite and magnetite are in the
5.1-5.3 range. I get a lot of hematite and magnetite rich rocks, and
SG's range from 3 to 5. The low ones are usually from rocks with
quartz sand cemented by a lot of hematite or, perhaps better,
hematite diluted with quartz sand.

I also get a lot of rocks that are claimed to contain metal but all I
can see are shiny mica flakes and grains of pyrite or arsenopyrite
that look like metal but aren't. As I say on this page, a good test
is to look at the grains after sawing and see if you can see the saw
marks.

http://meteorites.wustl.edu/id/ordinary_chondrites.htm

If you can't, it's probably not FeNi metal. I'd like to see the sawn
face of the stone in those photos up close.

Ordinary chondrites break apart from weathering in nature because the
metal rusts, causing a volume expansion (like rust blisters under
automobile paint) that fractures the rock making it easier for water
to get in, etc.. That's the only environment I'd expect to see a lot
of hematite together with metal. The rock in the photos doesn't seem
fractured.

be at odds with it being basalt ...). Wonder what Randy would think

Ok, you were warned.

Tomorrow is my birthday (41 going on 16) and I have indulged in a rare
pleasure - a few shots of Maker's Mark. This has made me a bit silly
and a pointless idea spontaneously erupted from my sodded brain...

Have you ever wondered what would happen if a falling meteorite struck
a certain object?

Now you can find out.

I have an unclassified NWA chondrite of dubious worth. It is
weathered. It is ugly. It's probably an H5 chondrite. It weighs 851
grams (1.87 pounds).

Photos of the HAMMER SMASHER METEORITE :

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj24/Meteoritethrower/smasher-1.jpg
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj24/Meteoritethrower/smasher-2.jpg

I am going to use this meteorite to SMASH objects that you nominate
for destruction!

Here is how this will work :

I will accept nominations from the List for objects that will be
hammered by this meteorite.

Once a nomination is selected, I will take the object out into my
backyard and place it on the ground. I will set up a camera to
capture the resulting mayhem on video. I will then climb onto my roof
and hurl the meteorite at the object with the intent of doing some
serious damage to the target object. Then I will upload the video to
YouTube for hammer voyeurs around the world to watch.

Some rules about nominating objects :

1) I am a man of very modest means. This means I cannot, and will
not, smash any flat screen plasma televisions, iPads, Ferrari
windshields, priceless antiques, or other objects which are expensive
or difficult to acquire. The objects nominated should be common items
that are easily available and inexpensive.

2) Resist the temptation to nominate politicians (of any party
affiliation).

3) I will select a winning nominee based on a combination of -
creativity and smashability.

4) If someone wants to donate an object for smashing, I will consider
and accept donated objects based on the criteria laid out in #3 above.
You will bear the cost of shipping the object to me and return
shipping if you want the shattered remnants of the objects returned to
you.

Let the nominations begin!

MikeG

 Hi Mike,

no worries, neither we understood it like that.

Of course, if one looks to the photos, the first idea,
 which comes to one's
 mind is: oil.
No idea, what causes this effect, maybe the composition.
 Also that strange
  tint the cut faces reveal.

And especially worrying is the variety of the odd
 inclusions. I mean
normally we all get already excited, whenever we find a
 carbonaceous
 fragment in a howardite,
but what that stone has all for strange clasts - that is
 really not normal
 anymore.

Since 1999 Stefan is in Morocco and since then we certainly
 had quite a
bunch of materials in our hands,
but such a weird polymict one - extremely unusual.

And it seems that many collectors feel the same, if after
 such a short time
now only three slices are left.

Now all of the smaller ones are gone, sorry for that. But
 we have still a
slice left, which we could subdivide into small partslices,
 if desired - but
for that one has really to raise his finger.

 For the moment!

use. Would a Dremel grinding stone work? If so which one?

Re: [meteorite-list] Mohs hardness and meteorites

Hi List,

Has anyone ever put together a hardness list for meteorites in
relation to the Mohs scale?

I know that irons, stony-irons, friable types (some achondrites, LL's)
will vary greatly in hardness. But what I am curious about is stony
type meteorites, specifically the chondrite family. For example,
let's take the typical H5 chondrite - one of the most common of all
meteorite types. Where does the H5 fall on the Mohs hardness scale?

Up until the time I started cutting and polishing meteorites, I
assumed that an L5 would be softer than an H5. But, I have run
across some L-chondrites that are very very hard and require the same
amount of sanding/polishing work as some H-chondrites. I am assuming
this is because of the individual mineral compositions of the
meteorites in questions, and not so much the petrologic type. So am I
right to assume that stony meteorite hardness is not dictated solely
by iron content?

Hi Mike,

Yes I believe your right to assume that iron content of a chondrite does
not dictate it's hardness. An iron meteorite has a hardness of 4-5 which is
what you would get if the test point of the chondrite was on a iron flake.
It could be higher if the test point was in the matrix and that would depend
on the composition of the matrix. Feldspar which has been found in
meteorites has a hardness of 6 and diamond is a 10.

Type specimens available at Cascadia include 1 piece originally 20.0
g, from which one polished thin section and one polished butt were
made. Thompson holds the main mass.

I did the usual Google Search (polished butt) to find out what this
was, and you don't want to know what the results of that search were.
Let's just say, that is has nothing to do with meteorites or thin
sections.

So I have to ask the List - what is a polished butt?

 The November Meteorite Magazine issue
should be in your mail boxes very soon if it has not already
arrived. You can expect it shortly. I'm sorry
for the delay. We picked up production mid-stride, but
put together what I think is a nice issue with great
articles. I deeply appreciate everyone who helped us
to make this happen. February should be back to
arriving on time. Someone mentioned not having gotten
prior issues in their subscription. The only one that
should be late is November. If you have had other
subscription problems, these will involve issues prior to
our presence. Please let us know, either through the
web site at meteoritemag.uark.edu, or by contacting Hazel

(Hazel can help you with business, back issues, or

For articles, content questions, or article submissions,

Thank you all for your support of this great
magazine. It is an honor and a joy to be working with
all of you to keep this magazine going and growing.
This is meant to be a magazine for the entire meteorite
community, collectors, dealers, hunters, scholars, educators
and everyone else, and we are happy to have your comments
 and participation.

[meteorite-list] Almahata Sitta on DVD

2010-12-15 Thread Jimski47
Just got a heads up on this new DVD release.

Countdown to Impact

Product Description
For the first time in the history of space exploration, scientists spotted
and tracked an asteroid on a collision course with Earth. About the size
of a truck, the asteroid slammed into the Nubian Desert in Sudan, in nearly
the exact spot and only a few seconds from the time scientists had
predicted. Now, together with NASA scientists, National Geographic joins
researchers
as they examine the remnants of the asteroid to unlock the clues to help
us prevent or survive a future incident.

Art, did I piss you off? Is there some sort of hierarchy going on here?
Those that respond constantly get the sweet card? I mean, don't get me

others you can take a whole day before they're posted. So what's going

Curious minds want to know. If anybody can shine some light on this, it

Hello List,

some time now.

In the past there were many complaints re several list members

ads. Many of the list members got quite irate at them for their
posts.

There exists on the list today one who does this, but yet there is no
outcry. He continues to make several posts everyday and I loose count
of the number of ads per week that are posted by this individual.

There were nine posts on Wendsday and today there were 4 posts from
12:30 (Approx) to not quite 2:30 pm, just under 2 hours.

Does Eric enjoy a protected position on this list such that he is
allowed

I find I no longer care to check my email, for fear of clogging my

Does anyone else notice this happening?

Here's another type of storage that comes in different sizes and they look
great also. You just have to substitute the needed water with desiccant.

Hi all does anyone in a humid area keep a relative humidity gauge in
their semi sealed or sealed display case? Even here in Arizona my
living area inside my house is a high humidity area, right now it is
sitting at 47%. But in my display case which is semi sealed with
weatherstripping type seals and has Eva-dry dehumidifiers inside. The
humidity level is 22%. I don't see why you couldn't keep your display
cabinet as dry as mine even if you live in Florida. You may have to
add an extra Eva-dry canister because you are starting with more
moisture in the air than I am. But at 22% I have great luck keeping
irons even without oil on them.
The best gauge I found was at Home Depot they are in the garden
section and sell for about $10.

Re: [meteorite-list] Rust Question about my stone meteorite.

2010-09-11 Thread Jimski47
Hi Shawn,

I doubt that soaking a meteorite in alcohol will remove rust. I've used
fine grit sandpaper to remove rust from slices. Lay the sandpaper on a hard
flat surface and gently rub the meteorite onto the sandpaper. For removing
rust from iron etched slices, I use a product called Bar Keepers Friend,
this can be found in most grocery stores cleaning supplies isle. It comes in
a powder form, so you have to make a thick liquid out of it. Wet the
meteorite with warm water then apply the liquid BKF. Rub it onto the meteorite
with your finger gently. Rubbing to hard can damage the etch. After removing
the rust, rinse the piece, soak it in alcohol and bake it dry in an oven
about 200 degrees for 2 hrs.

You can try the BKF process on a chondrite fragment and use a toothbrush
to scrub it. It should work but you might want to experiment with a cheap
uncl. NWA first.

Hello Listers,

Now can you just soak the meteorite in a 99% alcohol bath for a couple days
and the rust on the surface will some what come off the surface or are there
other steps?

The the size of the L6 fragment is 3.45g, so I dont have much room to work
with. I used a sand/finger nail file and sanded the surface, but not sure
if that made a difference and it seems that the L6 meteorite surface is
stronger than the sand paper on the finger nail file.

If any Listers have some suggestions let me know please :)
