Re: [meteorite-list] Who sold their collection to a pawn shop?

2020-12-01 Thread John higgins via Meteorite-list
Hey Mike,
Check out the Dar El Ghani 995 and examine the listed weights for the stone.
Take into account the two photographed specimens in the encyclopedia of
meteorites.
https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=6535
https://www.ebay.com/itm/46-5-G-Dar-al-Gani-995-Meteorite-Specimen-Main-Mass-Black-Fusion-Crust-DaG-995-/264951405461?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292
Main mass of 46.5g and the bulletin says the type specimen weighs 11.2g . The
tkw is listed as 56.12 This is a physical impossibility since the Pawn Shop
shows a tkw of 57.62, more than the Meteoritical Bulletin shows exists, and
that is not accounting for cutting loss and the 2 photographed specimens. Maybe
the meteorites were purposely stripped of the provenance to hide something.
Maybe they are stolen? Clearly someone is trying to get rid of them really
fast. Buyers should be cautious, and the collection they are sourced from
should be identified fast!!!

Re: [meteorite-list] Questions About NWA 7034, "Black Beauty" Pairing

2018-03-13 Thread John higgins via Meteorite-list
Last time I checked the wholesale price of Black Beauty has always stayed above
$1000 per gram, any rumors of a stone being sold as Black Beauty for $100 is
likely a fake, just a fantasy.

And I have proven in the past that this seller in question is self pairing and
making illegimitate claims. Read my facebook posts, all the facts of my
experience with him cheating me are there, he should not be given any credit.
This is a big fleece taking place here. You are a sucker for supporting and
entertaining this.

Martians especially Black Beauty likely pairings should always be verified.
Labs do have the time and manpower for planetary meteorites and yes it's up to
you especially as the seller to verify. If you do not verify by lab, and your
intent is to sell, you are destroying the integrity of the market place and
looking to make a quick buck off another's hard work. There is a unspoken code
here that forbids this illegitimate practice. The new generation of collectors
are educated and they disdain any seller participating in any such sales. No
more excuses.

As to whether or not people are willing to buy specimens that cost as much as
Black Beauty under the advertisement of a probable pairing, it is entirely up
to the buyer.

This is a topic that has been discussed to death. Probable pairings are simply
that, “probable” based on the knowledge of the seller, and the extent to which
the buyer trusts them. Labs have neither the time nor the manpower to verify
every specimen of every meteorite that gets sold. As a result, the trust
between buyer and seller is what is most important when buying probable
pairings.

Re: [meteorite-list] I love e-Bay

2013-05-07 Thread John higgins

I love e-Bay!

There is no other place where you can find such great deals on such a wide
range of items.
For those who complain and blame about the service, I'm sorry you feel that
way, I suggest you focus your energy on something more productive than shooting
down what has always been ultimately the best and cheapest place to find nearly
any type of meteorite specimen.Yes there will always be plenty to complain
about, politics, taxes, corporate profits, etc
I suggest to take e-Bays policies with a  grain of salt. It's the availability
of so many specimens on e-Bay that through the years helped fuel the fiery
passion of so many for meteorites. Nowhere else can you win a beautiful
polished rare meteorite specimen for .99
Oh and lets not forget to mention how much fun the bidding process is!
It is the ultimate place for the shopper to discover and fall in love with the
world of meteorites, especially if you are on a budget. Lets put the customer
first and focus on availability and price. The competition on e-bay keeps the
prices down for everyone, and that includes collectors, scientist and
institutions who want affordable specimens to study. I support e-Bay and
believe it's impact on meteorites and the culture of meteorites and the science
is much further advanced than had e-bay never existed.

I have great respect for all meteorites dealers who do business on e-bay and
off of e-bay, lets all share that sentiment of mutual respect for one another
regardless of where we choose to do business.

May the culture of e-bay and meteorites live long and prosper!

Sincerely kindest regards,
John Higgins

Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] eBay plus and minus

For all of the smack I talk about eBay for sellers, as I buyer, I love
it.  Buyers can do no wrong.  eBay coddles it's buyers because it's
profit model changed when it acquired PayPal.  Prior to the
eBay/PayPal era, eBay tried to compete with PayPal by offering a rival
in-house payment service called BillPoint.  For years, eBay made the
bulk of it's revenue from the fees generated by sellers.  The playing
field, vis-a-vis buyers and sellers, was more level then.

BillPoint failed miserably and PayPal dominated.  eBay bought out
PayPal and then the profit model changed.  Suddenly, eBay made
revenues from sellers and buyers in a more equal proportion - seller's
fees (listing, enhancements, final value) *and* now fees from buyers
via PayPal (which are paid by the seller).  From that point forward,
eBay had to consider both sides using a different formula that
eventually tilted the playing field in favor of the buyer.  This is
worsened when eBay started generating significant advertising and
third-party revenue, further eroding it's financial dependance on
sellers.

eBay is now a hell for sellers and a heaven for buyers - more so than
ever before.

I salute those old guard eBay meteorite sellers like the Humphries,
Bessey, and Hupes and others - they are a dying breed and a throw-back
to the heyday of meteorites on eBay.  If things keep going downhill
for sellers, the last diehards may abandon ship for better venues to
sell.

Is the writing on the wall for eBay meteorite trade dominance? One
look at Greg Hupe's killer new stand-alone website, and I see a trend
gathering momentum.  Ask Greg if he regrets setting up that website.
I can't speak for him, but I bet he's wondering why he didn't do it
sooner.  Plus, it's good eye candy.  :)

Best regards,

MikeG

 ROCK huge 7g slice

Nice Part slice polished on one side with three edges of fusion crust. The
designation L-melt rock is incredibly rare and shares the classification with
only 14 other officially classified non-Antarctic meteorites. This meteorite is
nicer than most melts, even Cat Mountain. What makes NWA 7191 so incredible is
a bow-shock wave that gives the metal and flow material an orientation in the
matrix. This fresh meteorite has a low total known weight, its super rare
and unfortunately there wont be much to go around.

Re: [meteorite-list] [IMCA] 2013 Membership Dues, Dues, Dues are Due

2012-12-07 Thread John higgins
I agree,
I think the complainers and blamers have some nerve and no right to suspect,
question or demand anything of the IMCA board members.
It's a privilege to belong to the IMCA, not a right.
We need to stand together to support our elected officials and stand behind
their actions.
I don't know of many organizations that have yearly dues of $20 compare that to
the Meteoritical Society that charges over $100 per year.
I think we need to raise the yearly dues , the budget is so small it's a joke,
what can we possibly achieve as a serious organization on such a little budget?
And there are a few bad apples that call for more time and money spent on
accounting? Ridiculous! And then to be heckled all the way, what a shame.
I'm proud to be a member of the IMCA, and sadly this issue keeps coming up over
and over, It's old news get over it, I don't think the members have any right
to make demands, they should stop worrying and accusing their organization of
negative actions and speculating.
Most of the trouble is being stirred up from past IMCA members who bowed out or
left disgracefully. It boils down to jealousy and hatred, grow up!
Stop the negativity right here, right now.
Lets all come together and spend our time to make contributions, stop trying to
fight and knock down what you are a part of, rather lets build the IMCA to
become one of the greatest and eternally lasting association.
Sincerely Kindest Regards,
John Higgins

In my opinion the members should only become concerned when we all
find out that Maria and the ELECTED board have several hidden bank
accounts around the world, including the Cayman Islands.
Then and only then should that be enough for all us to become
suspicious.

  Hi Maria/all,

I know the issue of financial transparency has been raised many
  times
before but i dont recall there ever being any sort of vote put out
  to
the membership on this issue? I understand the issue of safeguarding
that info so that only members can see it and how this is linked to
the security issues of the website. But surely to find out if this
  is
really an important issue to the majority of the members or not we
need to have some sort of poll? If this issue is only important to a
few then so be it but if for example you get more responses than for
the voting for board members then it would be clear that it is an
important issue. Surely if its something that the majority of the
members want to know then the board (who are indeed elected to serve
the members interests) need to take note. The only way that this
  will
be known is to vote on the issue. For the record, i for one do feel
that seeing where/how the members dues are spent is important. In my
opinion where members request to see this and that info is not then
shared you risk engendering an atmosphere of mistrust and lack of
support amongst some of the membership.

My opinion only of course for what its worth :-)

I have no qualms with asking the seller to sign and even personalize meteorite
displays or certificates that comes along with any meteorite, I think it's a
great sign of appreciation and respect. It builds a bond between both people.
It also adds tremendous value and is a ironclad seal, securing provenance
title-ship. But asking for an autographed photo, that is a bit of a
stretch! However I would be honored to have such a item.

 Hi all,

I was recently written to by a purchaser of an item sold on
 eBay who
lives in China. He started his email 'Hi Meteorite Man' and
 requested
a signed photo of me to be sent along with his purchase
 :-)  Now
although I am happy to oblige with a signed photo of me I
 feel that he
may be a tad disappointed when he receives it!  ;-)

 What to do?! ;-)

Geoff,  Steve,  what do you suggest?  Maybe
 you could send him a
signed photo as I am sure he would be much happier with
 that.

Of course he may genuinely just want a signed photo of me, I
 mean who
wouldn't! On that note, any list members that would like a
 signed
photo just let me know and I will be happy to oblige ;-)

 Cheers all

 Martin (not the meteorite man)

Re: [meteorite-list] Novato Meteorite Stick

2012-10-25 Thread John higgins

Your eyes are always the best tool in the shed when meteorite hunting, but when
you go to war, you need an arsenal.

The next best thing to having 20/20 vision is the Bazooka of all meteorite
hunting tools the Meteorite Stick!

Leave your metal detectors home! Metal detectors are useless in finding Novato
they are not suited for this meteorite or terrain. The Meteorite Stick is the
ultimate tool, it's ultra light, weighing in under 2 pounds and has proven to
be invaluable time and time again!

The Novato meteorite will quickly jump and stick onto the ultra powerful
magnet!

[meteorite-list] New unpaired CO3.6 Meteorites!

2012-09-15 Thread John higgins
Introducing! NWA 7005 NWA 7006

It's not very often such a significant discovery is made in succession,
sent from outer space, landing on Earth at different times and places, found by
members of the Berber tribe who are a native nomadic culture and the
foremost meteorite hunters of North West Africa.
I have been entrusted with this wonderful opportunity to present, two exciting,
interesting and ultra rare meteorites recently classified by Dr. Anthony J.
Irving.
Two unpaired carbonaceous chondrite type CO3.6 meteorites that are very much
like the Moss meteorite fall of Norway 2006

NWA 7005 CO3.6 (Provisional) 225g
Well-formed small chondrules. Olivine (Fa0.9-37.5; Cr2O3 contents in ferroan
olivine range from 0.02-0.06 wt.%), orthopyroxene (Fs1.2-9.0Wo0.8-2.9),
clinopyroxene (Fs1.3Wo39.0; Fs18.1-18.4Wo46.3-47.5), with accessory calcic
plagioclase, troilite, pentlandite, taenite and altered kamacite. Some rounded
composite metal+sulfide aggregates. Sparse small CAI composed of fine grained
spinel, with varying amounts of Mg-ilmenite, grossite and corundum; some CAI
have Wark-Lovering rims composed of sodalite and wollastonite.

NWA 7006  CO3.6 (Provisional) 335g
Well-formed small chondrules, mineral fragments and rare CAI in a reddish-brown
matrix containing minor kamacite and troilite. Olivine (Fa0.4-38.6; Cr2O3
contents in ferroan olivine range from 0.02-0.04 wt.%), orthopyroxene
(Fs4.2-5.7Wo0.8-0.4), clinopyroxene (Fs1.4Wo37.0; Fs1.0Wo42.6), with accessory
troilite and altered kamacite.

Don't miss the chance to see them in my eBay store,

[meteorite-list] Introducing a spectacular new Mesosiderite Meteorite NWA 6953 -AD

2012-04-15 Thread John higgins
Dear Meteorite List,

I would like to take this opportunity to present to the scientific world and
collecting community at large a very exciting Mesosiderite meteorite.

Northwest Africa 6953 is an interesting new mesosiderite whose unique nature is
a result of its composition and the collective effects of long-term terrestrial
weathering. The metal content in NWA 6953 has experienced dramatic alteration
and has almost entirely been replaced with the iron oxyhydroxide goethite. But
it’s not the oxidation or alteration alone that makes this meteorite
fascinating. Studying how the iron oxidation process takes place on Earth in
NWA 6953, a predominantly orthopyroxene-rich meteorite, may have huge
implications for comparing how iron oxidation may take place in aqueous
environments on other alien worlds. (See BBC News article Spirit claims Mars
water prize http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4094437.stm) More
importantly, studying this meteorite can potentially reveal clues as what to
look for in discovering other highly terrestrialized meteorites that until now
have mostly gone unnoticed.

This meteorite probably fell 40-50 thousand years ago when the Saharan desert
was sub-tropical. It was not a desert then, and the area experienced rainfall
much like any other place on Earth. NWA 6953 was exposed to a much wetter
environment, and after many millennia of weathering (at the surface and even
during burial and exhumation) nearly all the metal has been replaced with
terrestrial minerals. In fact, the visual appearance of the meteorite has been
radically changed into a strange and beautiful form that is unlike any other in
terms of aesthetics and chemistry. Voids in the meteorite matrix have been
filled with terrestrial minerals in crystal form, producing a prismatic effect
with internal reflections.

The visual similarities of this meteorite to a weathered orthopyroxenitic
diogenite gives some casual credence to the theory that asteroid 4 Vesta may be
the parent body of mesosiderites, and when the classification results came back
as a mesosiderite, everyone involved was quite surprised. The original metal
content (estimated to be about 30-40% by volume) has been replaced by
carbonates and goethite. However, the original orthopyroxene, calcic
plagioclase, minor olivine and some troilite remain, and even a few rare grains
of the original taenite and kamacite have survived. The refractive quality of
the crystal mixture is amazing, and another quality of this meteorite is the
presence of water trapped within the matrix during the terrestrialization of
iron hydroxides. (See the thin-section photos provided courtesy Mirko Graul
Meteorites)

As the newest and strangest member of the mesosiderite family, NWA 6953 is sure
to be the subject of much discussion and interest.

You can find the available offerings on my e-bay sales webpage

Re: [meteorite-list] Auction Kings ( PROVENANCE COA's )

2012-03-23 Thread John higgins
,

A properly papered item will almost always bring in the big
bucks in an auction house whereas it may not do so well on eBay where
some dealers tend to print their own COAs and grade items themselves.

Adam, with all due respect, I don't understand this statement, where do you and
your COA's fit into the picture? Don't you print the COA and describe/grade the
meteorites you sell and classify? Sounds like you would be hesitant to buy
meteorites from yourself? I think comparing baseball cards and antiques that
hold cultural value to meteorites that hold both cultural and scientific value,
is like comparing Apples to Oranges.

To Everyone,
I would like to go one step further, I urge the meteorite community at large to
consider standardizing COA's and provenance. Each dealer should still have
his/her own unique style but there should be a simple standardized field of
data provided for each specimen. This will promote the science of studying
them, adding value to all of our collections in the future.

Thanks for taking the time to hear my opinion, Have a Great Day!

Hi Adam and List,

Some good points there.

About COA's - even if a COA comes from a trusted grading or
certification firm, the value in the COA is not the COA itself, it is
the name of the grading or certification service on it that is known
to collectors of that particular type of collectible.  If you buy a
rare collectible and the COA says Confirmed authentic by Acme
Certification Services, Walla Walla Washington, Serial number
#123456, then the value of the certificate is that the buyer or
potential buyer can contact Acme Services, have them check their
database and confirm that the item in question is indeed genuine.
However, anyone can print a piece of paper that looks like it came
from Acme Certification Services and the ruse will only be exposed if
the buyer follows up on the info printed on the COA.   The COA itself
is worthless.

In the world of meteorites, there is no certification service or
central authority that can be relied upon to authenticate meteorites.
Without an authoritative body backing a COA, it's just a pretty piece
of paper.

Otherwise, I agree 100% with the other things you said.  :)

Best regards,

A lot of buyers judge the price of collectable items from eBay.  EBay is
not known for fetching top dollar, especially on collectables.  A solid
auction house will almost always fetch more than what would be realized
on eBay.  The problem with many auction houses is that their commissions are
out of line, some charging in excess of 40%! Then some fleece the
buyers with expensive shipping and handling fees.

Don't get me wrong, there are a few great auction companies out there, I
have used some of them.  One problem I encountered is that if the item
doesn't sell or the buyer can't pay for the item after bidding on it,
then the seller can be out of some serious money including catalog and
no-sell fees.  They need to do a better job of vetting their bidders!

A lot of dealers don't bother with middle men anymore since they can get
wholesale prices right off of eBay.  Some specialty shops get most of
there product from eBay, mark it up considerably and put it on their
shelves. The problem is that a lot the collectable items offered on eBay
have no expertise behind them and are accidentally or purposely
 misrepresented.

There are reputable independent companies that can authenticate and paper
items so COAs  are important to me.  I wouldn't purchase a valuable
coin, baseball card or any other collectable without first seeing that
it has been papered through an independent grading and certificate
service.  A properly papered item will almost always bring in the big
bucks in an auction house whereas it may not do so well on eBay where
some dealers tend to print their own COAs and grade items themselves.

 Kind Regards and Happy Collecting,

Re: [meteorite-list] Auction Kings ( PROVENANCE COA's )

2012-03-23 Thread John higgins
Hi Mike,

I consider that little piece of paper you put inside the micros a valid
provenance and COA.
It's your design and has your name on it. Regardless of how small or cheap
others perceive it to be, it's unique and it's the only provenance that comes
from you. That in and of itself makes it special, and something worth being
proud of. It adds a cultural and historic attribute to every meteorite you
sell.

You don't have to explain yourself, I consider you a friend, I like you and the
meteorites you provide, I like your comments to the list, you and solely you,
add a dimension to the meteorite world where there would otherwise be a empty
space. When I see your post I don't always respond but I always take pleasure
in reading what you have to say. People don't have to agree with you, who cares
if they agree or not, you take pride in what you do and you make a incredible
effort making great contributions to the meteorite community on a daily basis.

And let me be the first to Thank you for being who you are, telling it like it
is, and shooting from the hip, telling people how you feel,In my book that puts
you near the top of the list. Not too many people put themselves out there like
you do. Even though your not big on contributing great volumes of new
meteorites, you more than make up for it in contributions you make elsewhere.

Sincerely,
John Higgins

PS. I still am in support of standardization of provenance.

Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Auction Kings ( PROVENANCE COA's )

Hi John,

Some specimen cards or COA's would be easier to counterfeit than
others.  The best one I have seen, in regards to difficulty to
duplicate, would be the cards issued by Martin Altmann and Stefan
Ralew.  Their specimen card is very glossy and professional, but it
also has an embedded hologram.  This adds an extra element of
difficulty to reproducing their cards and would act as a solid
deterrent.

Truthfully, I don't issue COA's (or even specimen cards) with the vast
majority of my specimens for one reason - cost.  The bulk of my sales
are specks, crumbs, and tiny pieces that cost $10 or less.  It's just
not financially viable for me to produce cards and COA's for every
little micro I sell.  At the rate I sell micros, I would need
thousands of them over the course of time, and I just cannot afford
the expense.  When I have to choose between putting gas in my truck
(or food in my belly) and ordering up a batch of specimen cards to be
custom made, I have to pick the former.  I operate on razor-thin
margins and this is how I feed my family.  I don't have a day job or
income outside of meteorites.  Also, my inventory has such a high
turnover rate, that a meteorite I have in stock today might be gone
tomorrow and might never be offered again.  And I am a man of
opportunity, most of my acquisitions are based on opportunity alone
and are not planned.  I have no idea what I will be offering tomorrow
or next week.  Frankly, I am flying by the seat of my pants.

I'm not saying what I do is best or should be emulated by others.  By
the time I figure in the cost of packing-shipping materials (bubble
mailers, baggies, gemjars, printer paper/ink, mailing labels) and
other stuff like business cards, I am already spending about $2 on
packaging each $5 micromount.  Figure in PayPal fees and the profit
gets even smaller.  I have to draw a line somewhere and I draw it at
COA's and specimen cards.  Not to mention the 20% off coupons I throw
around on the web.

Every micro I sell comes in a 1.25 gemjar that has a paper label
inside.  The paper label states the meteorite name, locality, type,
and my URL/name.  That small piece of paper, is for all intents and
purposes my specimen card.  On larger or higher-dollar specimens, I do
offer specimen cards.  Or, if I am reselling a specimen I bought from
another dealer, I pass along the original specimen card or a copy of
it.  Also, if a buyer requests it, I will provide a specimen card (of
the conventional type) for any micro I sell.  Most buyers don't
request it.

I am aware that I lose potential buyers because of how I present my
meteorites in a spartan way.  I have had several collectors contact me
privately and tell me this.  Honestly, I am not trying to compete with
the big guys, the Hupes, Farmer, Cottingham, or any of you veteran
dealers.  I don't have the financial ability to compete and I have no
desire either.  I am quite happy in the small niche I have carved out
for myself.  I have a cadre of repeat customers who like what I offer
and they come back again and again.  If they are happy, then I am
happy. They know what I offer, and if they want a big specimen, they
go elsewhere.  I often refer them to the other dealers for those big
specimens

I agree with Mike, Daryl!

I'm trying to imagine a scenario of a house on a ravine, a guy finding a rusty
lump, and the wife persistently tries to throw the lump out in the garbage(?!)
instead of simply heaving it over the fence?

Doesn't track. Sounds like a scripted story.

Like we say at work - The name's Tucker, not sucker!

  Folks,

I need your help; there is a problem here---I'm just not certain as to its
  nature.

A seemingly honest fellow from Sandy Hook, NJ came to my office late today
in the hope I could verify what he was told could be a meteorite---and it
  is.

This fellow said that just after he moved in a year ago, he found it on
the embankment of his backyard just beyond which is a 75 foot escarpment.
The wife said she tried to throw the rusty thing out a couple of times and
both times he rescued it from the garbage. It is a medium octahedrite
which weighs 4.236 kg. How do I know it's a medium octahedrite? I could
make out a feint pattern underneath a veneer of rust on the cut face. Yes,
roughly speaking, this fellow found a cut and prepared meteorite in his
  backyard.

The fellow left the specimen in my possession and agreed to allow me to
have a sample removed and forwarded for analysis. I advised him there
could be a problem here that could be readily determined---and he didn't
seem fazed. While I've been accused of being naive, I nonetheless
genuinely believe he and his wife are honestbut I just don't get it.

Any thoughts here? Northeastern New Jersey. End piece. Medium octahedrite.
  4.2 kg.

I'll get a pic posted tomorrow.

[meteorite-list] AD- 5 Great Meteorite Auctions Ending Today

2011-11-06 Thread John higgins
Dear Meteorite List members,

5 meteorite auctions ending Now!   started @ .99 cents.

Please visit my eBay http://stores.ebay.com/Outer-Space-Rocks

www.OUTERSPACEROCKS.com  for meteorites professionally presented with
provenance:

NWA 6077 (2.67g) Incredibly rare, Officially classified Ungrouped Achondrite
similar to a Brachinite type meteorite. Many scientist have considered this to
be one of the most significant finds in history. To put in perspective how
important, this meteorite comes from a time when Earth was a primordial ball of
molten rock. It may be the only surviving ancestor of Earth itself. The last
time such a important discovery was made is when anthropologist found Lucy the
missing link between Ape and Man or maybe the much more petrologically
important link between Luce and L'Aigle. This meteorite comes with special
documentation and Oxygen isotope information which pairs this stone to the
famous NWA 5400.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NWA-6077-Ungrouped-Achondrite-Meteorite-2-67g-/320785005176?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item4ab046ba78

NWA 6080 (10.5g Windowed Fragment) Super nice looking Officially classified
rare LL4 type meteorite with plenty of Well-formed chondrules. Olivine
(Fa28.7-28.9), orthopyroxene (Fs22.7-23.5Wo1.5-1.3). clinopyroxene
(Fs7.9-9.4Wo45.1-41.5), sodic plagioclase, chromite, chlorapatite, altered
kamacite, taenite, troilite. This would make a super addition to any collection
and is a fine windowed fragment with some fusion crust.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NWA-6080-LL4-Chondrite-Meteorite-10-5g-windowed-frag-/320785195255?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item4ab049a0f7

NWA 6290 (6g End Cut) One of the newest Vestan siblings.Introducing an
incredible, Officially classified Diogenite Breccia meteorite. Made of Fresh
polymict breccia composed predominantly of distinctly “milky” orthopyroxene
fragments and some polycrystalline clasts, with sparse pigeonite, olivine
(bimodal in composition), calcic plagioclase, chromite, troilite and Ni-poor
metal.  Orthopyroxene (Fs22.9-24.9Wo1.0; FeO/MnO = 30.8-31.0), pigeonite
(Fs28.1-29.1Wo13.4-7.0; FeO/MnO = 22/6-26.0), magnesian olivine (Fa12.9-13.1;
FeO/MnO = 40.9-48.5), ferroan olivine (Fa31.0; FeO/MnO = 44.2).  Most of the
orthopyroxene is charged with microscopic inclusions of chromite and troilite,
which render it pale tan-colored in thin section. The TKW of this meteorite is
only 1000g and this is a excellent end cut displaying some really nice
refractory crystals when exposed to light from different angles.

[meteorite-list] French version of Steve Curry found

OK you won't believe this but I just identified a French version of Steve
Curry.
He goes by the name  Pascal Charissou
you can read all about his work here:

I suggest using Google translator to convert the French to English

It makes me wonder how many more people we will discover with the same

Re: [meteorite-list] Bonhams Auction Zagami LOT in question and others May 17th 2011 NYC.

2011-04-13 Thread John higgins
I have a question about the exceedingly rare meteorites in question.
Why does Bonhams devalue these meteorites by stripping them of their provenance
and chain of ownership history? Why are they being sold without the supporting
information of where they originated from? It does not seem to be in the best
interest of the buyer

[meteorite-list] Official Announcement NWA 6077 is Paired with NWA 5400

2010-10-05 Thread John higgins
Official Announcement

NWA 6077 IS PAIRED WITH NWA 5400

North West Africa 6077 Description:
An olivine-rich assemblage with cumulate (or possibly metamorphic) texture
exhibiting triple junction grain boundaries. Olivine (Fa30.2-30.7),
orthopyroxene (Fs24.1-24.5Wo2.1-2.0), clinopyroxene (Fs9.4-10.0Wo44.0-43.5),
altered kamacite, chromite, chlorapatite, Ni-bearing troilite and/or
pyrrhotite.
No plagioclase was found. Analysis conducted at the Carnegie Institution of
Washington show that the oxygen isotopic composition of this specimen plots on
the Terrestrial Fractionation Line. In conjunction with the mineral
compositions
and texture, this establishes that NWA 6077 is paired with NWA 5400.

The averages of the two Oxygen Isotope Results are:
d17O = 2.780, d18O = 5.358, D17O = -0.019 (all in per mil)

This brachinite was recovered out of Morocco in 2008 as one whole stone and
purchased by John Higgins. It was submitted for classification to Dr. Tony
Irving and was given the provisional classification number of NWA 6077. This
meteorite has a modest TKW of less than 1000g after the type specimen was
removed.

Personal Notes: Although I suspected that the two were possibly paired due to
similarities in visual observations and classification compositions, I felt it
was important to wait for secondary Oxygen Isotope results to come in which
have
recently confirmed the results beyond a reasonable doubt. There was also
another
important factor besides Oxygen Isotope testing that had to be taken into
account. Orthopyroxene which is present in NWA 5400 was missed the first time
around in NWA 6077 because it looks identical to clinopyroxene in
back-scattered
electron images. However further in-depth microprobe studies of the thin
section
have confirmed the presence of orthopyroxene, and are now noted in the updated
description. I feel that making a self pairing based upon my own
visual observations, is not only unethical, inappropriate, and akin to
pirating,
but would only feed the controversies regarding this meteorite without the
scientific testing data to back up such speculation, such action would be
premature, immoral and unfair to Greg Hupe and NWA 5400 after all the time and
effort he put into the study of what has become one of the most important
meteorite finds in history.

Have a Great Day!

Re: [meteorite-list] Official Announcement NWA 6077 is Paired with NWA 5400

2010-10-05 Thread John higgins
Greg Catterton,

I would be very cautious with throwing loose words around like considering all
the pairings
As far as I know NWA 6077 is the only whole stone other than NWA 6292 of which
is very fragmented that has conclusively been paired through testing and
subsequent testing to NWA 5400, from what I understand most of the others are
purely conjecture, or speculative without the extensive testing completed or in
various stages of testing...
I think our focus should be on the Science and authenticity of claims before
you
start making bets and psychic predictions about how much more material is
paired
to this very special and important meteorite.

Regardless of what you think, and however hard you try to knock this meteorite
for TKW, of what may or may not come to fruition, this meteorite is priceless
to
Science. I don't understand what the focus on TKW boils down to other than
monetary value or jealousy, this meteorite truly transcends price. And I think
the focus should be on the science of what this meteorite can teach us about
our
past. And possibly give us clues to the future. NWA 6077 is a Meteorite that
has
most likely come from the mantle of a planet, which one? The Oxygen Isotope
results suggest one like our own planet Earth. Even if there are 10kg or more,
this meteorite is from the mantle of a planet that is similar to our own and
comes from a place in time that does not exist anymore. I hope we can, as a
community become more productive with our time and focus on figuring out what
the meteorite parent body is and what the conditions are that existed when it
materialized. I suggest we shift the emphasis to the scientific study rather
than putting such a great focus on prematurely rushing TKW statistics, that can
only be revealed only after many more years of scientific studies.

John Higgins

Its great that there is such a nice amount of this material when considering
all
the pairings... With over 10kg of this material in pairings known so far, I am
willing to bet there is likely a good amount more still.
I bet the Brachinties are coming out of the woodwork to be tested.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Update, Very Important Serious- AD

2010-09-15 Thread John higgins

Hello Good Day to you all,
http://stores.ebay.com/Outer-Space-Rocks

As you know for some time I have been able to provide .99 starting bids and
free
shipping on my auctions for quite some time now in my e-bay store
OuterSpaceRocks. However I would like to note that the supply of Meteorites
from
North West Africa has dramatically declined recently, if not come to a
standstill altogether. Prices have already doubled, and tripled in some cases,
and the meteorites that I am selling cannot be replaced. The Nomads are
actively
trying to buy back meteorites from the Moroccan dealers, in expectation that
prices will soon skyrocket. Currently the prices being paid in Morocco exceed
any prices paid in the USA over the last 4 years. I'm sure the spike in the
price of gold, and the global rush to buy hard assets and avoid paper
currencies
has exacerbated the situation creating a insatiable demand that has finally run
NWA dry of it's Meteorites. Now I don't want to get anyone excited, and I know
we have all heard this was going to happen for the last decade, but it seems
the
music has finally stopped playing and the lights are on, looks like the show is
just about over folks. I also believe that there may be some undercurrents that
have masked the severity of the situation, that being many well known dealers
liquidating inventories to raise cash in this tough economic environment, as
well as changes in eBay policies. There are multiple factors I believe have
only
temporarily and artificially deflated the prices of Meteorites.

What is being done?

First of all you will see dealers raising prices dramatically, I have already
started the process, and have been keen to watching others do so as well.

Secondly corners are going to have to be cut, I'm not sure if I can continue to
provide free shipping and .99 starting bids. But I will continue to do so until
it becomes financially unsustainable, currently my sales are indeed on the
brink
of that threshold, and in many cases, once you figure in, my cost, eBay fees,
packaging supplies and shipping fees I am paying most buyers to take away my
most precious meteorites. Please don't forget about my time and commitment it
takes to provide you the buyer with a first class experience and nicely
prepared
meteorite slice with no saw marks, it is my insatiable passion, and love for
meteorites that has kept me going this long. Just like you have seen dealers
slices get smaller and smaller over time, this is a trend that will take hold
and become more apparent. No longer will you see nice Complete slices for sale
or large pieces of rare meteorites at affordable prices.

Currently I am having a sale that will end Thursday and Friday of this week.
Consisting of 17 meteorite Auctions started at .99 with free shipping
I would like to take this time to point out some incredible deals that should
not be overlooked,

For Example: There is a 1.478kg Meteorite that cost me over $250 and can easily
run me another $50 in shipping fees, this meteorite will have cost me over $300
cannot be replaced, has beautiful remaglypts and a incredible matrix and is
currently at the insane low price of $36 with less than 24 hours to go. I do
not
think you will see this quality of material start at .99 ever again, that is if
you are lucky enough to find someone willing to part with it.

All my other auctions are currently at giveaway prices, giving me dramatically
negative returns.

I encourage you to please stop by my ebay store, take a look, and consider
bidding:
You can find all the meteorites in my ebay store entitled OuterSpaceRocks by
copying and pasting either of the two links below.

Hi List,

I don't want to re-open the debate between science and laymen over the
involvement of private meteorite hunters. But I think something
should be pointed out in regards to the recent development about the
age of the solar system (story linked below). This story is a perfect
example of how private involvement can benefit meteoritics and science
as a whole. This NWA meteorite has yielded some potentially-valuable
data, and the stone was made available by private nomad hunters and
private collector/dealers. Without private involvement, this
meteorite would still be laying undiscovered in the desert and
possibly buried forever by the marching dunes, or left to suffer the
fate of terrestrialization as a part of desert pavement. It's a fun

Re: [meteorite-list] Magnet canes are evil DONT THINK SO!

2010-08-24 Thread John higgins
Hello Eric,

Respectfully,
I think your statement is outrageous, especially coming from the creator of the
upcoming Meteorite Hunting Magazine. How can you make a statement that is in
opposition to what you are promoting?
There is nothing wrong with using a meteorite stick!
Meteorite Hunting is a fun activity that people of all ages can be involved in.
You should know what a special experience it is to be hunting out in the field
and find a real meteorite. Sure over time you learn that you should not hold
magnets to meteorites, this act will make them useless for certain magnetic
experiments. But to say from the door that magnets are bad is kind of
ridiculous
in my opinion. Everyone knows the first Meteorite test is to see if a magnet
sticks. Sure it would be great if all Meteorite hunters were as experienced as
you are, but this is not the case, and they cannot be taught to spot a
meteorite
without the use of a magnet, or first hand experience. That is just the reality
that we live in. Almost every collector holds up a magnet to a meteorite to
test
it, why don't you go attack them for that matter. Meteorite Hunting is fun. I
think any activity that promotes the science, culture, and study of them should
be encouraged, even looking for them with a magnet on a stick!

Curious about the magnetic properties of meteorites as well. We all know that
you can magnetize metal just by placing it near a powerful magnet.

I read yesterday in Richard Kowalski's post about Brother Guy Consolmagno's
visit to Tucson. Dr Concolmagno's research also includes the study of magnetic
properties of meteorites. I'm sure he's not the only person to study these
properties, but it got me to thinking about it. If one does in fact use a
magnet
cane on a meteorite, do you impart any magnetic field into the meteorite? I
would think yes, even if it is small on a scale only readable by the most
powerful equipment.

My question is does it cause problems with analyzing/testing? Is this a form of
contamination?

My question would of course then be... Why use a magnetic cane at all?

If you think about it, we're taught NOT to remove a meteorite from it's
original location until we get in-situ photos, and record GPS coordinates of
the
find. If you use a magnetic cane, the meteorite will be removed from it's
ancient resting place as it snaps onto the magnet.

I have never used a magnet cane, nor will I ever, and I always
advise new hunters against their use. A magnet cane is basically
 an H-, L-, iron, and stony-iron filter. I sometimes carry an LL6
with me to the desert on the off-chance I'll run into someone using
a magnet cane. That usually cures them. ;-)

It should have read : you can NOT even identify the other shoppers

 Hi List,

Fleabay has been a hell for sellers and a heaven for buyers for a long
time now. I have stopped 99% of my selling on eBay because I can sell
the same items on my own website for zero fees. But, I still buy
stuff on eBay, including supplies like gemjars, bubble mailers,
shipping boxes, and shipping labels. I also pounce on the occasional
meteorite deal and have snagged a few of Adam's offerings in recent
weeks. I used to really like the eBay atmosphere back in 1999 when I
first started out there, but eBay has since done everything it can to
enforce a corporate-mindset on the membership, and now the sense of
community is gone. It's just another anonymous row of quasi-retail
storefronts and you can even identify the other shoppers standing next
to you while you are shopping. This is what happens when something
good is taken over by a bunch of suit-wearing, country-club
multimillionaires who don't give a damn about the product or the
service, just the amount of green streaming in. Unless the
shareholders mutiny, expect more the same from eBay in the future.

Having said that, I do have a single .99 cent auction up right now -
the first piece of NWA 6026 ever offered on fleabay. Feel free to bid
on it, or ignore it, or watch it -

 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=290414451908

 Some other eBay-like sites :

Bonanzle - better than eBay. No listing fees, small final value fee
only when an item sells. You get a free storefront plus live chat
bundled in. Downside - not quite as much traffic ebay, but still
pretty decent. I actually make a few regular sales there - and I have
staked my claim on it as the biggest meteorite dealer Bonanzle.
Until one of you folks set up shop over there and knock me off my
throne, I am the meteorite king of Bonanzle. LOL

Etsy - an arts-and-crafts version of eBay, dominated by artists and
mostly female sellers. You won't sell many meteorites there, but you
can sell some as crafting-supplies. I've sold some meteorite dust and
cuttings over there for artists to use in their works.

iOffer - auction site. I tried it, didn't like it.

Finally, when you folks are tired of getting strong-armed by eBay,
check out High-Wire ecommerce stores. It's where I host my store.
You pay a low monthly flat fee to have a store - no listing fees, no
final value fees, no percentages. You don't pay anything for sales -
sell a dollar or sell a million dollars and the fee is the same. I
love it. Caveat - you must be able to drive traffic to your store for
a service like this to replace eBay in your sales. I can drive
traffic to my site, so my sales are good. I cannot promise similar
results for everyone, but I don't miss eBay at all when it comes to
selling. If anyone reading this signs up for High-Wire (used to be
called Buy it Sell it), use my referral link to sign up because I'll
 get a kickback! :)

I think the cause of the extremely cold winter is due to the extreme Solar
Minimum. The climate on Earth is directly affected by the activities of the
Sun. Look into solar cycles, and the effect on climate change, there is more to

Subject: [meteorite-list] Haiti Relief Auction?

Hi List,

The extent of the devastation in Haiti is great and it makes whatever
problems most of us have pale by comparison.  If anyone is planning
some kind of relief auction or sale, I would gladly donate a few
specimens with the proceeds to go to the disaster relief.  I don't
have any high dollar pieces to donate (mostly small stuff like
micros), but anything would probably help.  I have my hands and plate
full with my wife's medical problems at the moment, so I don't have
the time to organize or host such an auction/sale, but I'll definitely
donate something.

Best regards and happy hunting,

[meteorite-list] Fw: Merry Christmas ! Harvey Nininger Signed book ending today! AD

2009-12-24 Thread John higgins

Hi Mike and Martin,
Wow that's some story, this book has some history now, maybe it's even worth
more with the original signature and the speculation of the enhanced signature
overwritten in black, you know what they say there's no such thing as bad
publicity but maybe that's just wishful thinking since its now a suspected
forgery. Thank you for preventing any tarnish to my reputation. Either way If I
found that there was any speculation after the book was sold, I  would have
given a full refund to the winner. And to that note, Im sorry this book is no
longer for sale. Before I thought it was an unusually signed Nininger book, but
now the plot thickens. Mike do you remenber who you sold it to? Did you
sell the book to someone in Germany, where i purchased the book from Hiele
Arendt who resided in Leipzig. And I wonder how much he bought the book for
But so far this book has been in the Palmer collection, the Jensen collection,
and the Higgins
collection, I wonder how many colletions this book has passed through. As far
as im concerned, this is the most exciting book I ever owned! Thanks for
the information!
Warmest Wishes,
And Merry Christmas to you all

Hi John and Martin
I remember both of those books rather well since I sold both of them a
few years ago. They came out of a collection of books from Tom Palmer
a well known mineral dealer from El Paso Texas;
http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=808
That is what the TP stands for in the upper right corner of Martin's image.

He had the largest collection of signed Nininger books I have ever
seen. He also had what I would call a complete set of signed books.
Here is the set of his books;
http://jensenmeteorites.com/BookNiningerSet.htm
I sold it as well to a fellow list member.

I remember the signed book that John had as it had Nininger's original
signature traced over.  I believe this tracing was done much later and
not by Nininger as I found a paper in with Palmer's stuff that used
the same color ink pen. The paper was covered with several obviously
forged Nininger signatures. I did disclose my suspicions of the
tracing to the person I sold the book to. It obviously it was not
John.
Tom also had another inscribed book but it did not have Nininger's
signature. I guessed Nininger was in the process of signing the book
but then got to talking about meteorites and just forgot to finish it.
Unfortunately the book had an obviously forged signature in the same
color ink and style as the Palmer paper but not the same color ink as
the inscribed portion. I'm not saying that Tom Palmer forged the
signature just that the practice signatures paper in his estate seemed
to match the signature in the book. I sold the book as an unsigned
copy with a forged signature.

I have been out and about asking around for clues to the whereabouts of the
famous PA fireball.
I would have to say that about 20% of the informants that I asked heard it or
knows somebody who did, Have yet to meet an eye witness, and from the data I
gathered, The informants are telling me that they believe its in the New Park
area or at least that is the direction the explosive sound was coming from.

My suspicions lead me to believe that it's possibly in the Susquehanna Trails
Area, However there is no hard evidence that leads me to this conclusion.
Only the trajectory which i devised from reading the news reports and talking
to people on the ground.

The terrain in this area is extremely rugged, hilly, and overly abundant
in growing cornstalks, which would make a organized search next to impossible,
even if the search area is narrowed down to a mile or two. And you guys could
forget about using CCTV's from car dealerships or the like because there is
nothing around for miles and miles. I believe that without definitive pictures
showing the exact trajectory of the fall from several locations, finding this
meteorite will be harder than finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. We
are talking really rough very sparsely populated country!

Anyway I'm here and will continue the search tomorrow, If anybody wants to meet
up, I truly believe that we can accomplish more as a meteorite recovery team.
give me a call at 973-687-9888

Good Luck to all you Meteorite Hunters!
Have a Great Day!

Re: [meteorite-list] Delightfully On-Topic - Re: New meteorite find

2009-01-21 Thread John higgins
I  Second that Mike!
There are many meteorites that have such beautiful fusion crusts,  I too have
been reluctant to cut them, and whenever I do get around to cutting them, I am
usually surprised to see that they are even more beautiful on the inside. And
then I always ask myself, why didn't I cut this sooner? Look at what I was
missing out on all that time!

Guess the old saying is true

Don't Judge a Meteorite By it's Cover!

Hi Stefan!

What a wonderful surprise! :)

Every meteorite is like an Easter Egg - there may be a treat inside.
And in this case, the inside is even better than the outside.  I can
understand your reluctance to cut it - the crust with it's delicate
textures are lovely enough on their own.  Please keep us updated on
the eventual classification of this specimen.  I am curious what it
turns out to be. :)

I have a 110gram UNWA that is a whole oriented stone with relatively
fresh crust, but it's so beautiful that I can't bring myself to cut
it.  Now I am rethinking that reluctance! ;) LOL

Best regards,

MikeG

Dear List,

I`m sorry for posting something meteorite related here on the list.;-)

Please let me show you two pictures of a really amazing new find from the
Sahara, a small single stone with a nice orientation and a fresh black crust
(very light-weight stone). I had to think for a while whether I should cut
this beautiful piece or not. But cutting was worthwhile because the result
was much surprising. The cut surface shows two lithologies, which have a
very sharp border. Its definitely a chondrite, and probably a carbonaceous
chondrite. Enjoy:

The uncut main mass:

The cut surface:

I really like this piece because I suppose that it could be something new.

Best wishes,
Stefan

Re: [meteorite-list] Alternative Meteorite Group Track Records

2008-12-26 Thread John higgins
Hi Elton, this post is not in any way intended to be  a attack, trolling,
disparagement, of you or anyone else who feels the same way. And the meteorite
working group, would perfer this conversation be OFF-LIST. We don't want this
to be a meteorite list issue! Instead of discouraging other people, which you
have obvisouly acclompished with flying colors. Come and join in our
discussion. Get to know the people you are calling untalented auto salesman,
and see if when you are done you still think of us as selfish, greedy self
centered folks, who only have their own self intrest at heart. A dicussion is
all it is at this point. If the idea gets far, and you still disagree. Then
bash it all you want. Our group already stated that we want a private
dicussion, you are trying to bash us in a public forum, not very nice. Maybe
somebody can make comments on your moral judgement and nature for doing so, but
that is not in our nature, so we cannot comment on
that. I have already responded to your post in Mike's yahoo chat group.
Anybody who is intrested, should go there and comment. You can find my post as
well as others at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/meteoriteworkinggroup/

Subject: [meteorite-list] Alternative Meteorite Group Track Records

Hello Folks--  Season's greetings. I just wanted to share some thoughts on
forming new meteorite interest groups--past empire building in the meteorite
world in general and why some succeeded and some failed. Please, no one take
this as an attack, trolling, disparagement, discouragement, or a dissing of
anyone.  It is not directed at any one, although it may have been bumped to the
forefront by Mike's recent thread. An honest idea was proposed and I am not per
se addressing his proposal in any way so please keep an open mind.  On this
list we are as close as can be to inclusive(99%) in having a collection of
members within the existing meteorite interest niches.  As a long time member
with observations regarding empire building as an alternative to the
Meteorite Central list, The Meteorite Times web space, IMCA, etc.  there have
been a plenty.  I could list a long string of people who wanted to make a big
splash campaigning to
 improve/perfect the
culture they did not remotely understand. In spite of -- or because of--self
caused blunders, there were many patient old timers willing to  advise them on
how to get oriented to the list rather than making the list fit around them.
They tried to help them get up to speed and direction with the technical side,
the meteorite market, and the meteorite culture often being rebuffed, accused
of trying to squash competition, or rejected as not knowing what they were
talking about.  What was hard for some  novices to accept was that their own
mindset was the reason they were unable to make inroads into the community as a
true mover/shaker.  There were many more that took the help and are strong
respected contributors today.

Not wanting to get in their way, the long-time members stepped aside, letting
them fall into craters of their own making--some many times over.  Many, many,
times we have seen Internet/ web page savvy folks offer to provide
alternatives
to the meteorite forum communities.  For the majority of those past forums,
I'd have to look hard to see if they were still around.  Some were more noble
than others.  There were some who spend a lot of effort making dust clouds
promoting a solution looking for a problem.  When the dust settled they sat
wondering what went wrong and why their enterprise/forum/ efforts failed to
hold attention.

Just in passing, there are several meteorite interest groups/ mailing lists:
some active but with only duplicate postings, some are inactive/abandoned with
only newbie postings who never bothered to look at the membership numbers or
posting activity,  some private technical lists which are by invitation only,
and of course-- the dealer's own list where ads go directly to the member.  For
reasons beyond the scope of this babbling of mine, 99% of all the inhabitable
niches for this hobby have been taken and are being served well by the host.
There is a saturation point and economy-of-scale even in this field of
interest.  In the words of a frequent poster it is a free county so anyone
coould feel free to start up all the groups or forums they wish--the Internet
is a very large place.  Those that offer a truly unique and desirable service
will last and those that are offering another way to slice up the limited pie
won't--  and will end up on the ash
 pile
of Internet redundancy entirely on their own. Those that did succeed, did so by
offering real value and in an unselfish manner within many many manhours and
personal expense to do so

[meteorite-list] LOOKING FOR IMCA SPONSORSHIP! PLEASE SUPPORT THE CAUSE FOR A HONEST METEORITE COMMUNITY!

2008-12-15 Thread John higgins
Hello,
I want to join the IMCA. this whole thing about Evans, Casper, Matteo, etc...
is important, and I believe its for reasons like these that the IMCA was
established, to identify and extract the black cancers from among us honest
members of the meteorite community. Also it is important to do everything
possible to distance yourself, using all the available methods, to make a
distinction from the good and the bad. The IMCA is and will be the first and
foremost tool that collectors use to make a educated meteorite purchase. And I
want to be a part of it, now more than ever.
I ask for two sponsors to officially recommend my induction into IMCA
Thank You,
Have a great day!
