Re: [meteorite-list] New Brenham Coin
Hi List. Just curious, does anyone out there who purchased the new Brenham Coin notice that the side with the meteorite seems cloudy instead of shiny like the Nantan Palau Coin? Is it just my coin or is this normal for this coin. I just was comparing coins and noticed how the Brenham coin (meteorite side) seems spotty then shiny. Just curious. Hello Don, Thanks for your interest in the Brenham coin. The Nantan Palau coin is polished, such as proof coins are here in the US. The Brenham coin is palladium plated in the sky, which gives it the cloudy look...although I prefer to think of it more as a metal flake look. How about metal flake ghost look? Clear Skies, Mark Palladium is worth quite a bit more then silver, and closer to the price of gold. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Nantan Meteorite Coin in National Geographic
Hello everyone, Just a note that the Nantan meteorite coin is mentioned in the latest National Geographic. In the Money Pardon me, is that a meteorite in your coin? Actually, yes! A growing number of countries are embedding objects in commemoratives. That's how space debris from China ended up in a coin from Palau. A tpyical mintage is 1,000 to 10,000 coins, priced $50 to $100 for silver, about $1,000 for gold. The result can be a boon for national coffers. Canada and Poland are among the nations minting the coins themselves Interestingly the article shows several embedded objects in commemorative coins, but not the Nantan coin. (There is also an interesting article on global warming and the National Geographic is always coolso pick it up if interested.) Re: [meteorite-list] Fw: Brenham Meteorite Coins
Thanks for your comments Griff. It was nice seeing you again in Denver. The sky is amazing. What a cool effect. I have not seen a sky like that before. The sky is palladium plated. Palladium is a precious metal that sells for around $360 an oz., up about $10 this last week. On the coin, if you have not seen one in hand yet, it gives the sky a sort of a metal flake look. I agree, it is a cool effect. I am now sold out, or within a couple from it. Out of the gate, this seems to be the most popular coin of the three. Of course it has a Kansas meteorite so that isn't really fair...;^) Clear Skies, Mark Bostick Kansas Meteorite Society Hello and good day Mark I got my coins today. Really cool . The sky is amazing. Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2007 10:19:18 -0700 (PDT) Hi list-members. After nearly two months of endless travel, I am finally home and beginning to get some work done. I have received a long awaited shipment of new coins that Jim Strope and I just manufactured. They are the second in a series of coins we are making, the next being an incredible set of Moon and Mars coins, already in production, and scheduled for delivery just after the Denver show. This newest coin is commemorating one of the most important chondrite finds in history, the venerable NWA 869 chondrite. So far over 4000 kilograms of this meteorite are know, doubtless more out there. We felt that this great meteorite warranted use in a coin. Many of you know that I produce jewelery from NWA 869, and after production, I get all of the small tumbled pieces back that were not usable in the manufacturing. I am putting these small pieces into each coin. Again, we have made a 1000 coin run, and each is numbered 0001-1000 just like the Campo coins (nearly sold out)! The color is the same, measurements are the same, and it would make a great match beside your Campo coins. See these wonderful coins at the links below. http://meteoriteguy.com/ebayauctionstockphotos/869coina.JPG http://meteoriteguy.com/ebayauctionstockphotos/869coinb.JPG They are $25.00 each plus $2.00 shipping (of course I can combine shipping on multiple coins, but they are heavy and the wonderful USPS has recently more than doubled the cost of domestic shipping rates lately). I will immediately begin taking orders via email. We will not sell coins #0001-0010, all triple numbers, or all 100/200/300 etc coins. Re: [meteorite-list] Family ClaimsMeteoriteFellInTheirCourtyardinIndia
I agree with Chris although he likely could have worded himself a little better. Our peer review system keeps pseudoscience out of the scientific field, with little exception, which is something MOST, but not all, countries seem to lack. The poll numbers quoted also seem quite a bit off to me, and are possibly because of the way the question is worded. A great example of this is the crack down on online gambling because kids were getting addited to gambling. The poll questions, which first classified a kid as anyone under 23, have you even gambled. As almost 80% had said they gambled at least once, it was declared a crisis situation. Another funny question (in my opinion) was Have you gambled in the last six months? Those that answered yes, were declared addits. This study was used as evidence to ban online gambling, and while online gambling likely is not a good thing, the poll in my opinion was tainted and therefore worthless. I could very well seeing that gallop poll quoted as saying something like Do you believe in a higher power? Which may mean something completely different to Chris then me. Mind you 50% is an accurate number here in Kansas (but not the larger cities), yet across the US, 30% is much more accurate I think, and according to most Christian organizations, this number appears to be dropping. And then one must consider times have changed, that 30% contains 100 different beliefs and many accept science, meaning simply because someone says they are Christian, does not mean you know how they think. Most of the creationist I have seen the last two years, now accept evolution, which includes the creationist theme park, and if I remember right is in Illinois and to my knowledge is the only one. I may be wrong on the later but I live in Kansas and we do not have such a theme park, and I am smack in the middle of bible country as they say. I think I could safely bet that this list has several Christians that accept the age of meteorites. In another related note I got a galllop pole this last week on the US postal service. I mail 2-3 times a week, get 20-25 packaged a week, spend a couple thousand a year on stamps I do not use, so one would think I would be the perfect person to poll. However I didn't like half the answers I was allowed to choose from so I am not going to fill it out. Remember according to the Gallop polls Kerry won the last election. So unless one sees the questions, and has other facts, such as were the poll was taken, they have to be taken with a grain of salt. I would however argue with one of Chris' points, and that is I think the US media is just as bad as any other country in reguard to meteorites. But the US media is not a group of scientists. Re: [meteorite-list] need info composition of lunar meteorites
Thanks for your comments Norbert, Dan and Mike, Dan, I am having a problem with my Cox account but your issue has been addressed. While I do not find the auction to be misleading, I would add a note to please you, but eBay will not let me. The new format does not seem to be without it's errors. Clear Skies, Mark Bostick Hi Dan, I'm pretty sure that he meant anorthite (the mineral), and not anorthosite (the rock type) - it's easy to confuse the two, especially if you consider that most list members or hobby meteorite enthusiasts are no mineralogists, or petrologists. That being said, anorthosite was certainly not found in all rocks returned from the Moon, but if you say anorthitic placioclase that would make perfect sense, even for the lunar mare basalts. It would also make sense to say that most of the ancient lunar crust (the lunar highlands) is composed primarily of anorthositic rocks and breccias - many meteoriticists use the term anorthositic but also the term feldspatic when it comes to the classification of lunar rocks as you will see if you study Randy Korotev's great site about lunar meteorites (the best one around): http://meteorites.wustl.edu/lunar/moon_meteorites.htm To quote Randy Korotev: Lunar rocks are classified by what minerals they contain (mineralogy), how the mineral grains are put together (texture), how the rock formed (petrology), and chemical composition (chemistry). These different parameters sometimes leads to confusion because a geochemist might call a rock feldspathic (dominant mineral) or aluminum rich, (chemical composition) while a petrologist might call it an anorthosite (mineral proportions and implied mode of formation) or regolith breccia (texture and and type of rock components). He also notes that not all petrologists (not to speak of mineralogists ,-) do always easily agree on the classification on any given lunar rock (and that's an understatement, IMHO). What I'm trying to say is that it's very easy to make a small mistake in wording when it comes to this particular field when even the scientists do not always agree on how to call a given rock, and when he's used to hear terms like anorthosite-bearing basaltic regolith breccia and the like which are commonly used when it comes to the classification of lunar meteorites. Hope this helps? Best Regards from Germany, Norbert Classen Planetary Meteorites www.meteoris.de PS: I'm no mineralogist/petrologist, but merely an educated layman, and it just happens that lunar meteorites are my favourite obsession... -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Hi, I joined this list at the behest of someone from the IMCA based on concerns I have with something being advertised as a meteorite. Among other errors and misstatements, the ad states that Anorthosite was found in all the rocks returned from the Moon... As a mineralogist I find this difficult to believe. Anorthosite is defined as a rock type that contains 90% feldspar and is off-white in color, with perhaps a few inclusions of other minerals. On the other hand, anorthite (note the subtle difference in spelling) is a mineral species consisting of anorthite feldspar, the calcic end member of the plagioclase series. To make things more confusing, anorthite occurs as a component of anorthosite, but the two words mean quite different things. I sent two e-mails to the seller via eBay, and have received no response. I would have liked to think the seller simply made some mistakes and listed a common terrestrial rock as a meteorite, but the lack of response gives me doubt. However, I am also curious about where he might have obtained the statement with which I opened this note, as far as whether the original publication indeed says anorthite and that is simply a mistype on his part. [meteorite-list] Greensburg Fundraiser, Where the Money Is Going, Raffle Details
The following I am posting for Steve Brenham Arnold, who is still in Greenburg. Hey List, Another night of rocking out at midnight at the top of the stereo during Marshall Law in Greensburg. Just trying to make the best of a not-so-good deal. I am excited that we are getting a great fundraiser going for my neighbors. I lost a house, but all my neighbors lost both their houses AND their homes, and in many cases they lost much more. Several of us have been talking about how we can best impact the City of Greensburg the best way possible with a fund raiser. After talking with a lot of locals, the overwhelming consensus is that people in Haviland say that the Haviland State Bank's Relief Fund is the place to put it. They are in touch with the people of the area who really need the funds. Of course FEMA, the Red Cross and the United Way are here, but due to some of their bureaucracies, not all of the money donated to them makes it to Ground Zero. The people at Haviland State Bank have assured us that 100% of the funds raised will go to people that need the money, sometimes people that fall though the cracks that the bigger charities seem to miss. So with our whole hearted conviction, we feel that you can rest assured that you participation in the meteorite community fundraiser(s) will make the biggest impact possible. While we will get the money to the fund ASAP, we will attempt to make a formal presentation of the total amount raised to the bank in a formal Big Check on Stage at the 2007 Meteorite Festival in July. Of course we are not doing this to make the meteorite community look good, we are doing it to help people. But we want the neighborhood to know that they have friends out in the world that care about them. We have some great people working on this project, and of course some people that participate are going to walk away with some GREAT meteorite specimens. Kiowa County is one of the few places on this planet that cares about meteorites. And what has happened over the years here has impacted in many way ALL of our lives. Now is the time we can give back to a community that has given so much to us. What happens in the next few days and next few weeks will determine if people's lives come out of this with a positive result or a negative result. We can, and we will make a difference. YOU can make a difference. We look forward to giving you updates as this rolls along. You guys are the best. You all deserve a Harvey for this one! Steve Arnold 308 S. Maple Greensburg, Kansas 67054 (end) I would also like to add that those that have donated funds already will receive raffle tickets in value of their donation. In that case they told us we had to be on our property by 8pm and we would have to stay their until 8am. Kelsey and I looked at each other and smiled. We went by a charity booth, got a dozen bottles of water, some apples and oranges and headed home. We were told that we would be arrested if we stepped off our property, so we are stuck here until 8 am. I still had a half dozen cans of Bud Light cans in the fridge, not that I would need it because our squatter neighbors gave me a bottle of wine to celebrate our constitutional rights! Our neighbors have a generator, and their old rotary dial phone has worked through it all. Miracles of miracles, Greensburg now has 4, count them 1, 2, 3, 4 bars on the cell phone. Maybe it is because FEMA headquarters are 2 blocks down the road. Great news: Bob and Florence Peck are in GREAT Shape! We saw them at their home. Now, HONESTLY Miracle of Miracles is that their home received only minor damage, when everything around them is wiped out. My sister gave me a $20 bill, and asked me to give it to a needy family. So I handed it to Bob, with the explanation of my promise to my sister to give it to someone. He took it with the condition that he would give it to someone else that needed it a lot more than he did. Who am I to argue with him? So I cheerfully agreed. I have a hundred stories to tell, and only 12 hours to tell them. LOL. Anyway, anyone know how to start a blog? Maybe I should do it. Kelsey and I are sitting out by the curb on card tables, hoping to exchange autographs with the great men and women patrolling the neighborhood tonight. We have police, sheriffs, National Guard and a whole host of other people crisscrossing the streets looking for looters. As soon as Kelsey's episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show is over, she will be going to bed in the dry half of the house. Maybe I can post some photos Kelsey took later. Time for the second glass of wine... Hello AL, Thanks for your e-mail. Me and Steve are hoping to be on the ground in Greensburg within a couple days. As of 10 a.m. today, they are still not letting the citizens in. [meteorite-list] Greensburg, One Person Found Alive Today
Sorry for the multiple e-mails again.guess I should listen to an entire press conference before e-mailing. The meteorite being found made me pull the gun. One person was pulled from the rubble alive today. Pretty amazing due to the three days or rain, the many dogs and the like that have combed the area. Many Kansas homes have basements, although they appear to be rare in Greensburg. I have one and almost every house on my block does. I know the local senator survived the storm inside his. I imagine this person was likely trapped in their basement with debri covering it. Because of these basements, it will be some time before the total deaths are known. Re: [meteorite-list] Greensburg Relief Effort
Hello all, Rescue workers are back at the scene today. The weather still does not look good, but we are no longer in full time weather coverage. More heavy thunderstorms on the way in the Greensburg region, and other portions of Kansas, which makes flooding a big threat at the moment. Mal Bishop asked My question is; how should I ask people to donate, or where to send donations? Could someone set up a special PayPal account to collect funds for the relief, or should we just send donations to one of the list members such as Maria, Mark, Steve, Geoff, or someone else? Interesting choice of names. The four of us, and others have been bouncing e-mails. Maria Haas noted: Our intent right now is to get some funds down there quickly. In the next day or so we will finalize the details and let you know about a fundraising raffle we are planning. It will be similar to the one Geoff did for Katrina. Those of you who donate funds prior to us working out the details will be included in the raffle. I am accepting donations through my PayPal account at dragonsoup at msn.commailto:dragonsoup at msn.com. For those of you who prefer not to use PayPal, you can send donations to me directly: Maria Haas, 410 Spring Street, Saline, MI 48176. So, we are going to have a Meteorite Community Greensburg Raffle. I will be launching a web page shortly. Donations can besent to Maria, who will later send out the items to the Raffle winners. Sonny added I would offer some slice of new Nevada meteorites for the auction and a cash donation. We could have Steve and Mark place the money as needed to the residents of Greensburg. I am not sure if Steve will make into Kansas within the next few days or so. I can, of course, make my way over. Currently the place is I believe somewhat locked up, and it was a ghost town yesterday except for resue workers. A curfew was inforced until 9 or 10 this morning. Anyway, I would like to thank everyone for their help with this, especially our charity expects, Maria Hass and Geoff Notkin. As well as Sonny for helping spur us together. [meteorite-list] 2007 WGMS Rock Show Recap
Hello all, Thought I would post a little recap on how our local meteorite themed rock show went. Show attendance was an all-time record, beating the last high by over 500 people. Attendance to programs where 4-5 times the normal, Steve's was the most packed, standing room only, while the Kansas Meteorite Society presentation was a close second. We filled all the seats, Steve just had an overflow. Usually only the first couple rows of seats have bodies in them. The common belief in the upped attendance, meteorites. I sat as an expert during Steves and the KMS presentation, the later I was wearing my Renaissance costume, barely made it back in time, which seemed to entertain the general public. I took my sword off ahead of time. The McPherson Museum had a very nice display, and their curator, a man excited about meteorites and Nininger in his mid 20s, was a pleasure to meet. I am sure we will work with them in the future. John Schooler and his wife had an extremely large selection of hard to find macro and micro mounts, as well as many fine minerals and fossils. He also set up a very nice educational display. Check out his website if you have the time. (www.schoolersinc.com) The Big Well was at the show the first three days. We formed a partnership with them to help make peridot from the pallasite meteorite the state gemstone. The museum had since been collecting signatures and according to an e-mail dated the evening of the tornado (to fellow KMS member Jerry Calbert), everything was going well on their end. I have not heard from anyone since and hope no one was in the building when it was hit. At the show we put a ballot box on our table, and were interviewed by a local television network, which made the evening news. The Lake Afton Observatory , brought a nice collection of different Kansas meteorites along with samples of basic meteorite classes. There program went well. Don Stimpson had a small display and sold samples of his meteorites. He also had two meteorite postcards he made which I know will interest some of you, such as Mike Jensen. These had a circle on them like an old popular Meteor Crater postcard where Don put a piece of the meteorite .prices varied. The KMS had a display including the Wichita meteorite. In fact the show was such a success that we are likely going to squeeze meteorites into the next show as well. We are thinking of going with the peridot gemstone theme for it .meaning could change anytime. The Wichita Gem and Mineral Society in general has turned us into some of it's star members, we have led or have been a part of pretty much all public programs, advertisement, press releases and the like, since joining them. With the WGMS connections, the Kansas Meteorite Society has had a larger radio and television appearance, so this has been a win-win combination. Thanks again to those that helped a little behind the scene and thanks to those that attended.. [meteorite-list] Greensburg, Kansas Update
Hello all, Greensburg was closed off from it's residents again today, while workers started the process of cleaning up and continued the search for bodies. The weather did not let up, raining hail on the rescue workers. The residents were told they would be able to enter the town today but officials changed their mind because of debris spread about during last night's storm. To enter the town tomorrow you must have proof of ownership, although others can come with you. This may be why the meteorite is lost, no one has been allowed to find it where Steve noted it may be, on the flooralthough I have not heard that the meteorite is missing on KAKE, despite perhaps 40 hrs. of local news coverage. The rain has been a problem and another storm is forming and coming up from Oklahoma. Kansas is starting to have some flooding problems, which if there is a bright side to that, I do not think Greensburg is in any trouble in that regard. I am confident we will rebuild Greensburg. Re: [meteorite-list] Greensburg hit with tornado
The damage total is not known, no power in the region is making communication hard, but the storm has finally died down. It had a rain jacket all around it so it could not be seen well. No one can know how many torandos it spawned. Greensburg took the majority of the damage. Dozens and dozens of homes where totally destroyed, about 60% of the town. The high school, the city jail, the hotal/diner, the hostiptal, pretty much every city buidling. Everything on the west side of main street. You can go for a few miles, in what was the busiest section of the little town and the only thing that was left standing in the grain tower (which is ironic I guess). From what I can tell on the damage it did, it appears to have landed about 2 miles east of where Steve found the big Brenham. Haviland has a Red Cross section set up where people are being sent. 100's of rescue workers are on the scene. Injuries are unknown, at least 50 are at area hosptials, no confirmed deaths, which is good and amazing in itself, but it is very early. The storm lasted six hours but has died down. [meteorite-list] FW: Re: Greensburg hit with tornado
Steve asked me to forward the following for him. Mark Hello List, As many of you know, with my recoveries at the Brenham site, I bought a house in Greensburg, Kansas a while back as a location to base my field work from. I got a call last night from my brother in Wichita wanting to be sure I wasn't at my house in Greensburg, when the news of the tornado hit. This last week I was in Iowa on a hunt, and I was planning to return to Kansas yesterday. At the last minute I decided to return to Arkansas first instead of going straight back to Kansas. Reports are that 100% of Greensburg is damaged, and 70%+ of the buildings are destroyed, so I am expecting my home to be gone. Of course I have dozens of close friends in and around Greensburg. And my heart and prayers go out to them. The uncertainty of their well being as well as the conditions of their homes is on the forefront of my mind. The town is evacuated now, but I plan to get back up there as soon as I can this week. Yesterday Greensburg's claim to fame was the world's largest hand dug well, and the 1,000 pound Brenham Meteorite they had on display. This morning it is the Kansas town that got wiped off the map. It is amazing what can change in one night. It is a reminder to all of us what is really important in life. More news when I get it. [meteorite-list] Greensburgs, Kansas Further Updates
Seven people currently confirmed dead, 6 from Greensburg. 16 in critical condition. The town has been evacuated and the National Guard has the place locked up. They are only letting people in, with escort, to recover pets. They have just completed a second sweep of the area, and are starting a third. In that reguard, the death toll is much lower then it could have been. The scene has a Katrina appearance, the houses being marked on the outside if any people are inside and the like. They have also issued a 12 hour tornado watch today, something I have never heard of. A tornado watch means that conditions are right for a tornado. When one is spotted, it becomes a tornado warning and we sound bomb sirens as a warning. It will likely start raining soon as well. One family survived hid in the one room that was left standing. The radio was talking with the mother of the house last night and she kept askingis it going to rain. Which I thought strange at the time. House destroyed, almost killed, everything is in pieces and she was wondering about the weather. This was before any shelters where built and she had nowhere to go.which was her very fair concern, having kids and all. Greensburg is about 60 miles from here, which isn't very far when you consider a mile wide tornado. The closest somewhat good sized city is Pratt, about 8-10 miles away, and the closest major city is Wichita. Having worked a lot with the two towns the last few years, getting to know both mayors to some degree and many of it's citizens, this has greatly saddened me. One of the projects I was kind of working on, was getting a meteorite museum, which we were looking at putting on the highway at the empty gas station, ground zero of the impact, or the Big Well, which also appears to have been in ground zero. I am sure this will backshelf the project. [meteorite-list] Big Well Damage
I can confirm great damage to the big well location. The shed above the well is half missing, the building itself looks like it is missing it's roof. This was/is the location of the 1000 lb. Brenham. Due to the weight of the specimen I image it is still there, hopefullly still in one piece. The tornado stayed on the ground until it entered Pratt county...where one person has been comfirmed dead. That's an eight mile strip. Technology and our understanding of weather saved 100's of people. Along with much of the state last night I watched it form, start to spin, and listened while they declared Greensburg a target of a tornado about 20 minutes before it hit. Anyway, I apologize for the many e-mails on this. Greensburg is has a unique meteorite history; past, present and I believe future. I hope I have not strayed too far into OT. Neighborhoods beside neighborhoods, nothing but small pieces setting on foundations. I did finally see good video, rather then a photo, of the big well, and the quick image I seen before was misleading. It received a direct hit, completely crushed and destroyed, nothing there. [meteorite-list] The Rock Show....moving right along
http://www.meteoritearticles.com/2007GemShowInfo.html Hello fellow list members, The 54th annual Wichita Gem and Mineral Society show, themed Meteorites Dazzling Treasures is moving right along. Yesterday, Education Day, was field trip day for many of the local schools. 1500-1600 kids roamed the show grounds to the delightand perhaps at times annoyance to everyone else. Really they seemed quite well behaved every time and most said thank you and the like when appropriate. John Schooler and his wife is here (for like the 25th time) with a very nice assortment of meteorites. John also has a nice meteorite display showing all the basic meteorites types, along with the Russian meteor-wrong Putoran and nice description sheets. The show has a lot more out of towns then usual, likely due to meteorites, and I even noticed at least one list member from the Northwest US. Today, at 1 p.m., Greg Nowacek of Wichita State University and director of the Lake Afton Observatory, will discuss types of meteorites and show samples. Nowacek recently took over WSU's meteorites, as Professor David Alexander has left us to Iowa. The local university (were many of the local Kansas Meteorite Society once, and in most cases, many years ago attended) has on display about a dozen meteorites. Several Kansas, a Marlow somewhat chunk like specimen that looks exactly like one I have...perhaps sister pieces, and a few various meteorites showing different types. The Kansas Meteorite Society will make a presentation at 3 p.m., which we have done a few times now so it is getting to be a worn in hat. The McPherson (Kansas) Museum and Arts Foundation has a very nice meteorite collection on display, but to be honest I haven't had a chance to look it over. The director seems to be a very likable guy and we are looking at loaning a few meteorites to them for their museum. I think they are doing something today as well. http://www.mcphersonmuseum.com/ Tomorrow Steve Brenham Arnold will be here where he will present a program. Steve is showing one of his meteorite hunting programs and has the meteorite found on display (along with a 22 lb. cut specimen supplied by the Kansas Meteorite Society). Could type more but no timehave to hurry and get in my renaissance costume. Other Kansas Meteorite Society members are able to man the booth so I can make my way to the Faire for a few hours. [meteorite-list] Meteorite Rock Show Promotions
Hello fellow list members, Promoting for the 2007 Meteorites Dazzling Treasures Rock Show is in full steam. http://www.meteoritearticles.com/2007GemShowInfo.html The radio show went fairly well the last weekend, the hour went by pretty quick. Today, Greg Nowacek of Wichita State University appeared on local ABC during the lunch time. (Not sure about coverage on other news slots) and NBC came down and interviewed Kansas Meteorite Society member Jerry Calvert. I believe CBS ran something as well, but i only have one TV so I don't know for sure.) In Jerry's interview he talked about Nininger (born here) and the news story included a photo of him, which was neat. (Not often you see Nininger in the local news). Sadly, the local Renaissance Faire is also this weekend so I likely miss it. It is the only place I know you can wear tights and dead animals parts, while carrying a sword and drinking beer. (Perhaps I can sneek away from the rock show for a few hours on Saturday?) http://www.meteoritearticles.com/renaissance.html I will take this time to remind everyone that the 2007 Kansas Meteorite Festival is coming up. It will be held July 7th in Haviland, Kansas. As time gets closer you will be able to find more information at the following link. http://www.havilandkansas.com/id4.html In sort of related news, we are starting work to get olivine from the pallasite meteorite as the state mineral. Two pallasite strewn fields and four different pallasites could have made us the Pallasite State...if the Wheat State wasn't chose long ago. We are starting a petition at the rock show, and have several helpful to do such, people already exciting about it. They are moving to make a state fossil right now as well, so this is good timing. [meteorite-list] Botanica, Radio Program + Odds Ends
Hello Everybody, Hope everyone is doing well. Been pretty busy around here as usual. After a little cold spell the sun is now shining much to the delight of my baby Oak trees, and my banana tree that perhaps I put outside a little too early. (It really isn't looking good after the last week.) Oh well, on to meteorite things A couple weeks ago I helped Steve Arnold move the Brenham meteorite main mass from the Exploration Place. It was sad to see Steve pull away in his hummer, perhaps the last time the meteorite will be here. I took a couple images and will try to find time to post them. (Speaking of Steve and Brenham, that Cash for Treasures program with Steve and Geoff is getting a LOT of air play.) Last week we presented a slide show at the local Botanica on the solar system and meteorites. It was lunch program, so people had to pay to see the presentation, but we still had about 80 people in attendance. Photos coming when I can find time. The Kansas Meteorite Society will be on the radio this weekend, on a local radio station, KNSS. This will be Saturday, April 14th from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., during the Countryman's Kansas program, hosted by Gene Countryman. We will be promoting the upcoming meteorite themed rock show. You can read more radio show here http://www.knssradio.com/djs/countrymans_kansas.php And after the weekend, not sure when really, you will be able to download the show to your ipod here... http://www.knssradio.com/promo/podcast/index.php Followed up all leads from the lawn show and no new meteorites. Must more in the works, some things not finalized yet, some things I can't really talk public about. Mark Bostick Wichita, Kansas www.meteoritearticles.com PS: I will remind everyone about the dates and times of our upcoming rock show, as it seems like the thing to do. Please try to make it if in the region, but avoid Friday, unless you want to be trampled by the ~1500 kids or so that attend that day. http://www.meteoritearticles.com/2007GemShowInfo.html __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite research
Hello Barb (and list), Mark, Im new to the meteorite-list but surmise from reading that youve got a good handle on meteorite history. Do you have any insight into the following: I am going to assume (you know what they say about that) and guess that you were directly this question to me, there are a few Marks here (but many more Mike's). I get a couple dozen like e-mails a month through my website, and I am somewhat a meteorite historian, so I am not going to far out here. A piece of this specimen is at ASU for positive ID. It is stoney, does not attract a magnet, with lots of large condrules. The time (1881) may be off a few years. It belongs to a friend of ours. Glad to hear that. ASU will surely be able to tell you what it is...or at least if it is a meteorite. In 1881 Andrew Jackson Warner was driving a stagecoach approximately fifteen miles west of Rose City Michigan when he heard what he described as a train passing over his head. Looking up he saw a large rock plunge to the ground in front and to the side of his route. He stopped the stage, got off and walked to where the rock had come to rest. It was slightly imbedded in the ground but was not hot enough to start a fire. He got back on the stage and drove to his destination Damon Michigan about nine miles away. He put the stage away then hooked the horses to a large wooden sled called a stone boat. He returned to the impact site and using the horses he pulled the rock upon the sled. He estimated it weighed about 900 pounds. He secured it to the sled with wire and pulled it into Damon and off loaded it at the Damon School Yard where it lay for over 75 years. Over the years about twenty pounds was chipped away for souvenirs. Warners great-great-great grandson retrieved it from the school yard and has it stored in a garage. The remaining mass and pieces total about 750 pounds. Damon was a logging camp which was abandoned years ago. Interestingly there is a Rose City, Michigan meteorite. It fell October 17th, 1921 and was the fourth meteorite known from Michigan, the second seen to fall. On the event you described, there is not much I can really tell you from what you have supplied. If I was given a date of the reported fall, I could check my archives for Michigan and area meteor reports from that time. I included a couple meteor reports below as a example. (For those outside of the US, Indiana is below Michigan.) I should also note that even if I could match up a date and a meteor report, there would of course be no way of proving the two events were related. Good luck with your submission, and should you have any other questions, feel free to ask myself, or the list in general. Clear Skies, Mark Bostick Wichita, Kansas http://www.meteoritearticles.com http://www.imca.cc Paper: Fort Wayne Daily Gazette City: Fort Wayne, Indiana Date: Sunday Morning, September 25, 1881 Page: 2 (of 8) Under CITY NEWS. A meteor of surprising brilliancy was observed last night, falling due west at an angle of about 80 degrees, and disappearing from view in the northwest. It started falling at 11 h. 22 m. 33 s., Fort Wayne time, and finished 6 seconds later. To-day will be fine and clear though somewhat windy. (end) Paper: Fort Wayne Daily Gazette City: Fort Wayne, Indiana Date: Thursday Morning, October 6, 1881 Page: 2 (of 8) A Southern Meteor. Tuesday night about 10 o'clock the residents in the upper portion of the city were treated to a meteoric exhibition of wonderful brilliancy. The meteor seemed to shoot across the sky from south-west to north-east, its path being marked by a radiance far greater than that of the electric light. It finally exploded, sending out burning fragments or coruscations in every direction. The writer is informed by persons who saw the meteor that it was accompanied by a whizzing sound, and that the noise of the explosion was so loud that they momentarily expected to hear the fragments falling. [meteorite-list] 1900 era New York Times Meteor Wrong Articles
Hello listoids, A few New York Times meteoritic articles from the same time period. Clear Skies, Mark Paper: The New York Times City: New York City, New York Date: Sunday, November 14, 1897 Page: 1 (of 24) MESSAGE PERHAPS FROM MARS. Strange Characters Found in an Aerolite Which Struck the Earth Near Binghamton. BINGHAMTON, Nov. 13. - Scientists in this city are puzzling over an aerial visitor that dropped in this vicinity early this morning. Prof. Jeremiah McDonald, who resides on Park Avenue, was returning home at an early hour this morning when there was a blinding flash of light and an object buried itself in the ground a short distance from his premises. Later it was dug up and found to be a mass of some foreign substance that had been fused by intense heat. It was still hot, and when cooled off in water was broken open. Inside was found what might have been a piece of metal on which were a number of curious marks that some think to be characters. When opened, the stone emitted a strong sulphurous smell. Prof. Whitney of the High School declared it an aerolite, but different from anything he had ever seen. The metal had been fused to a whitish substance, and is of unknown quality to the scientific men who have examined it. The aerolite is now on exhibition and will be placed in the geological collection of the High School. Several persons have advanced the opinion that this is a message from another planet, probably Mars. The marks bear some resemblance to Egyptian writing, in the minds of some. Prof. McDonald is among those who believe the mysterious ball was meant as a means of communication from another world. Nov. 16. - By the falling of an aerolite seven miles south of Crescent City the residence of John Meyers was partially wrecked and the neighborhood was panic-stricken. The meteor came from a point in the sky a little east of south and struck the north end of the house, tearing away at part of the upper story. The aerolite buried itself in the ground about three feet from the foundation of the house. Special to The New York Times NEW ORLEANS, La. July 12. - The village of Bellefontaine, in Webster County, Miss., thirty miles in the interior from this place, was the scene last night of the fall of an aerolite, or meteoric stone, which completely wrecked the large storehouse of Hodge Mabry, and destroyed the stock of goods contained in it. The fall of the aerolite occurred between 9 and 10 o'clock, during a perfectly clear moonlight night. The destruction of the building was preceded by the appearance of a ball of fire passing swiftly through the air. It gave off during its passage enough light to greatly increase the light from the moon. As it came near a loud explosion was heard and a shower of fire burst forth from all sides of the blazing mass, having the appearance of hundreds of falling stars. The storehouse was wrecked simultaneously with the explosion. The explosion of the aerolite caused a report like the sound of distant thunder or the roll of far-away cannon. The debris of the house is being cleared away in search of the aerolite. It has not yet been found. Some of the searchers say that its velocity buried it in the ground. Others assert that the stone shattered into meteoric dust when the explosion occurred. Many cinders of a gray gritty metal appearance have been found in the wreckage. It seemed to be composed of fused minerals, glass, stone and steel. There is a mixture of vari-colored stones intermingled through the otherwise gray mass. Twelve years ago Keron Kiernan, keeper of the cemetery, while at work one afternoon, heard a whistle, like escaping steam, coming through the clouds overhead. Then came a bright light, an odor of sulphur filled the air, and about fifty feet from where he stood a missile buried itself in the ground scorching the grass about and melting the gravel where it fell. The opening showed the object to have buried twelve feet deep. Since then it has gradually worked to the surface. (end) __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com

The Kansas Meteorite Society, along with the Wichita Gem and Mineral Society, will be manning a booth in the education section, the entire week. http://www.wichitagardenshow.com/ We will be handing out pamphlets along with showing and describing meteorites to the 50,000 in attendance. 10% of the Americans have gardens (I read that somewhat?) and most have a small interest in rocks. I should be able to arrange a couple radio spots to tell people they can bring rocks in to be looked at. Among the display, I will bring along my microscope with a thin section of NWA 998. Being a Mars meteorites, and really colorful under polarized light, it always seems to be of interest to the general public. [meteorite-list] Blaine Reed Tucson Notes AD
Blaine Reed is not part of the meteorite list so I am sending this along for him. You can join his e-mail group by going to Yahoo. Mark [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear Collectors, I am finally back from Tucson (comments on the show below) and unpacked enough to offer some of what I brought back now (my next few offerings are likely to be such stuff). Many of these items are consignments left with me at the show. As the owners of the largest pieces want either their money or the items returned, I likely will be offering these first (I would much rather sell them than have to pay expensive registered return postage), but I will be offering more smaller and affordable items later on (many of these need preparation work that I have not had time for anyway). Notes on the show: I have had quite a few people call and ask how things went. To be honest, in a word it was slow. In two words it was very slow. There were not many buyers wandering the show this year and many dealers suffered for it. I managed to do fairly well none the less (but down quite a bit from last year). What I am VERY concerned about is an increasing development the past few years in the actions of the meteorite collecting public. The show in general has been noticeably slowing the past few years. This is probably due to many factors such as cost (every thing gets more expensive in Tucson each year), increased time needed to see the people you need to see (as many dealers leave early and others show up late, almost 8 or 10 days is needed to be sure everybody you need to see will actually be there) and the internet (many of the large chain stores no longer buy at the shows, but have arranged supply contracts through internet connections now). I had been quite smug for the past years of this decline as we had a close knit community in meteorites that seemed to defy these problems. Collectors would come to the show for several days, visit dealers, go to parties and to auctions. Everything seemed to complement each other. Now I am seeing the rapid unraveling of this once neat social fabric. I had originally assumed that not many collectors showed up this year (I had maybe 35 meteorite people come to my room this year #150; I even had trouble giving out all of my special Tucson wine glasses this year). I was quickly shown how wrong I was when we attempted to attend the Meteorite Mayhem party of Steve Arnold and Geoff Notkin. We arrived late due to circumstances (business). The security guard would not let us in, as the bar was over capacity. We waited as several people left, but he would still not allow us in. An attempt at bribery (alas, poor George just doesn't have the negotiating power he once did) and we were told to beat #150; it. Before leaving I looked in the windows to see many dozens (possible a couple hundred) of people that had, at one time been my customers that I had not seen in many years. Clearly there is a problem on my end. What I am finding from the few I have been able to talk with is that most collectors have now become completely focused on the auctions only. Most fly in Friday night, go to Lang's auction on Saturday and go to Blood's Saturday night (and often don't get out until well after midnight) and fly home Sunday morning. I do understand that for many, they are unable to take the extra vacation days to visit the show. I have been trying to formulate some kind of answer as to how I can become relevant to the visiting collectors once more. This is a difficult thing to do when facing something like auctions that seem to work on the same powerful emotional areas as gambling in the human brain. I have had a few ideas such as; 1) Maybe moving to Inn Suites to be a little easier for those already visiting the dealers there to find me (though I don't think many of the dealers there had huge amounts of visitors either). 2) Starting one of my own auctions (Alan once told me this is why he started his #150; to get collectors to at least come to his room and see what else he has to offer ), though I have no idea when I could hold such an event that wouldn't interfere with the already existing ones (which would end up being a detriment to all of us). 3) Setting aside most of my really special or unique items (commonly available stuff generally does poorly at auction) during the year and consign them to one of the existing auctions (not a bad idea actually, but then I would not have these neat items available during the year). The plus of this one is that it could eventually save me huge amounts of money (if I do end up shutting down my Tucson show room that is, then I would only have to be in town for a few days to do some buying and let the auctions do the selling). 4) I am trying to convince Steve and Geoff to allow us dealers to each set up a small display table (no need to haul in a bunch of Sikhote-Alins, NWA 869's and other common stuff #150; just the true collector oriented special items) at their

Re: [meteorite-list] EL3 Fossil Image
Hello Gary and list, I am struck by the porocity of the specimen. What you are seeing most is spaces in cracks due to weathering. And those 'cubic' inclusions. The inclusions are more and less weathered portions (depending on how you want to see it) of the meteorite. The meteorite is very very old. Part of the meteorit had iron leach out of it over time...the lighter part. Add another weathering stage and the portions with more metal, starting weathering faster. It is perhaps the best deal in meteorites today, with prices at around $1.00 a gram and less. The Peabody museum's meteorites are quite impression and it is the oldest (curated) meteorite collection in the United States. I took the opportunity to examine the collection a couple years ago and was quite impressed. Spurred by Michael's e-mail I spoke with Robert and Wanda Donahue this morning. Robert seemed a little more aged then Wanda (for lack of better word), liked he asked where I was a couple times, but Wanda was very clear minded and answered all my questions. Both were kind and I mean no disrespect to Robert with my comment. Wanda recalled, We were overwhelmed, of course. We both heard the noise. A real loud crash. We ran into the room and looked at the ceiling and saw the sky. She also remembered the names of all the people that examined the meteorite or were associated with it to some degree at the beginning. Dr. Roy Clarke made a positive impression on her. I asked what happened to the damage and was told they had the whole ceiling cut out and put into acrylic. This was donated to the local historical society. The item was on display a number of years but is not currently. Paper: Arizona Daily Sun City: Flagstaff, Arizona Date: Thursday, August 9, 1962 Page: 3 (of 16) Tells of Luzon Find Meteorite Expert Nininger Speaks at Flagstaff Rotary Dr. H. H. Nininger, world-famous authority on meteorites, told Rotarians this week that a huge meteorite, recovered from the jungles of Luzon, R.I., is enroute here from Long Beach and will be on display at Sedona for several weeks. It will then be taken to the University of Arizona, Tucson, to be placed in the permanent display there. Nininger said that a trip to the Philippines he was given a small piece of the meteorite by the department of mines. He made a trip to the site but failed in efforts to remove the main mass of the huge chunk of nickel and iron. The meteorite has since been excavated and shipped to the U.S. It weighs several tons. The study of meteorites is no longer an amateur affair, he said. There are now many highly trained scientists devoting their time to this study. Much important information has been developed relating to outer space. Nininger was presented by Jack Wetmore, program chairman. We will never get to the end of the learning in any science, he said. We only become aware of new conditions and new facts which have entered our scope since our last investigations. The continued study of meteorites will undoubtedly lead to even wider knowledge of outer space, he concluded. [meteorite-list] Carleton Moore, Collectors Helped by....1985 NPA
Paper: The Frederick Post City: Frederick, Maryland Date: Monday, September 9, 1985 Page: C-9 Collectors of meteorites helped by farmers, animals, children TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Thank heaven for cows, farmers and children, says Arizona State University geochemist Carleton Moore. Without animals and people, Tempe would not be home to the world's third-largest collection of meteorites, according to Moore, who directs the ASU Center for Meteorite Studies. Case in point: In the 1840s, a meteorite now No. 202sb in an ASU file fell in New Concord, Ohio. It hit and killed a cow. The incident drew attention to a rock that otherwise might have been part of 10,000 unnoticed tons of meteorite material which fell on the Earth that day. A farmer, probably upset over his dead cow, turned the rock in to local scientists, who in turn have passed it on to ASU, Moore says. We get a lot of our meteorites this way, Moore says. Usually, some professor will go out to some farmer's home and ask him i£ he has any interesting rocks. The farmer usually will say, 'Nope,' and the professor will ask, 'Well, what's that thing over there holding the trashcan lid down?' Drawing his thumbs up to his chest to hold imaginary suspenders, Moore completes the tale: The farmer usually comes back with, 'Well, don't know. Dug it up plowing a while back. Sometimes it's a meteorite, Moore says. Finding meteorites is a human aspect, by Moore's accounts. In 1969, the same year ASU researchers were analyzing 200 moon rocks brought back by Apollo 9, impoverished youngsters in northern Mexico found a way to make a year's wages in a day scouring the desert for unusual rocks. What they found was one of the oldest meteorites known, containing ash thought to have come from the theoretical Big Bang, which supposedly set formation of the universe in motion. ASU paid the children about $500 for the find, enough to feed their entire family for a year. The university continues to pay for some meteorites researchers consider valuable. . Other meteorites in Moore's cluttered collection are in the shape of anvils, knives and crow bars some fashioned by ancient Indians, others fashioned by poor people in South America, eager to make use of a metal they would not be able to buy. Today, ASU houses 1,300 meteorites worth between $4 million and $5 million, Moore says. Many meteorites are kept in unmarked rooms. They are snipped worldwide to researchers hoping to learn more about the universe. Inside, their chemical composition hasn't changed in millions of years, giving scientists clues to the origin of the universe and planets. Rocks from Mars share a chemical composition similar to ancient Earth. Other meteorites have carried amino acids from outer space, giving some scientists reason to believe the basis for life was spawned in outer space. Re: [meteorite-list] AUCTION RESULTS - Blood and Lang
Jim wrote All this discussion has convinced me that perhaps I have been looking at the posting of auction hammer prices incorrectly. I now SUPPORT the posting of the prices. However, I do feel that they should be posted by the people actually running the auction as an OFFICIAL record of the auction results. This should be done with the specifications of the auction lot as well for clarification on the quality of the piece offered. I agree with Jim. I understand the problems with posting prices. People seem to think the lowest price they ever see a meteorite sell is what it is worth, which is strange, as they understand the highest price is a fluke. So while I saw no problems in the past, I now think auction prices should be posted to keep things clear and honest. One can also ask, should my absentee bid be what I pay if I won, or should it be the next increment over the previous highest bid? [meteorite-list] Some Good Tucson Auction News
Hello Everyone, I hope that last round of e-mails has not turned anyone off from attending Tucson or the like. It is the greatest assembly of meteorite collectors and dealers and should not be missed if possible. My report on the show will be coming soon. I hope that other attendees take the time to write a few words on their experience as well. Just as you likely enjoyed reading past reports, others will enjoy reading yours. Now for a little good Tucson Auction news. During Michael Blood's People Auction, Michael was kind enough to stop the auction to offer a number of last minute things for the Walter Branch fund. A pair of posters, I believe given by Michael, where signed by all present. One for Walter and the other for the high bidder with all funds going directly to the Walter Branch fund. The signed poster sold for $275 by a generous Fred Hall. A couple other items were also auctioned off, including a Mars tainted wine bottle given by Greg Hupe, and third item if I remember right. Sorry can't remember who gave it or what it was. While I have no ideal how much was collected at the auction, I imagine over $1000.00, which mind you is a fraction of the funds that Walter could use. As you have read his condition is quite serious. I don't see him returning to work anytime soon. Anyway, I would like to publically thank Michael Blood, who received quite some slack for the long running auction, for taking time out for this, Fred Hall, Greg Hupe and the generous meteorite community. And since I am on this subject, I have copied and pasted John's e-mail the other day on the Walter Branch fund. Hello List, After reading the bad news about Walter and his daughter, I called Maria Haas who was in Tucson attending the Gem Mineral Show to tell her the news. Being the good soul that she is, she came up with the idea to collect donations to assist Walter and his family during this trying situation. Maria spent the better part of two days collecting donations from meteorite folks attending the Show and was delighted to find that members of the meteorite community were quite generous. During a phone conversation with Maria on Monday ( she was hunting meteorites in Holbrook with Dave Andrews and Larry Mr. Lucky Atkins), she asked if I'd post this message to the Met. List since she is away from her computer. Anyone who would like to donate money to assist Walter Branch and his family can do so through Maria. She has a Premiere Paypal account, so she can accept payments made with Visa, Master Card, E-Checks, etc. If you prefer to mail donations to Maria that is possible too. Here is her Paypal account e-mail and also her mailing address. Paypal payments : dragonsoup at msn.com mailing address: Maria Haas 410 Spring Street Saline MI 48176 She won't be home from her trip to Arizona/Nevada until late on Saturday, February 10, 2007. So if you try to contact her, don't expect a reply until then. From the description of the injuries, I'm guessing Walter's recovery will be a long process. I've never met him in person, but have been in contact with him for pretty close to 10 years. I'm sure that those of you who know him or have done business with him will agree with me that he is a wonderful guy full of integrity, honesty and charm. Please be generous. [meteorite-list] 3rd Legal Tender Meteorite Coin = Brenham
Hello Everyone, I am pleased to announce that a proposal of mine for a 3rd legal tender meteorite coin has just been approved. While there are several steps from now until the coin is minted, I am happy to say that this coin will feature Brenham meteorite olivine crystals. I could not keep making meteorite coins and not have one done with a Kansas meteorite. Plus the first (legal tender coin, not token as most meteorite coins are) was a stony meteorite, the second an iron so a stony-iron seemed a logical next step. By using the olivine crystals, we will be sidestepping any problems that collectors may have towards Brenham (mind you, the recent Brenham Meteorite Company finds seem quite stable overall). Preliminary designs have the coin featuring a Buffalo (or Bison). The demand for Buffalo coins, since the 2004 nickels have skyrocketed and since this will be the first one with a US meteorite, I think they will be quite popular. Production of this coin, right now, is set at only 1,000 coins...the same as the Nantan coin which sold out instantly and a good share of these will be acquired by the Kansas Meteorite Society. Because of this fact, and that I would like everyone to have a chance to acquire one, I will be offering them for sale when they are first available so if you are interested in them, let me know and I will put you on a contact list. Cost of the coins should be around $60.00, and I will guestimate it will be six months before they are ready. As time goes by I will know more. Another added bonus (perhaps?) by getting one from me is I can hand sign the certificates which like the first two will come certified by me with a printed signature. and not have one done with a Kansas meteorite. Plus the first (legal tender coin, not token as most meteorite coins are) Darren asked So does this mean that the coin could be taken to a store in the country of issue and the store will be required to take the coin at face value to pay for goods or services, and be able to exchange that coin at a bank for said face value? Because if you can't spend it in the country of issue just like any other coin from that country (Marshal islands, whatever) it ain't a coin, and it ain't legal tender. Hello Darren and list, The first coin has a $10.00 face value in Libya backed by the National Bank of Liberia, the second has a $5.00 face value backed by the government of the Republic of Palau. I am not sure where the third coin will come from at this time, as that is being worked out. At this time, the project has been approved and that is where we are. I am excited about this one more then the others so I went ahead and announced it. (The last tow times I waited until dealers had time to get them in stock before posting). This is no different then if you bought one of the 1986 $1 Statue of Liberty coins here in the US. That is a legal tender coin as well. Mind you, someone at your local 7-11 might not understand the Statue of Liberty coin is a legal tender coin, but that doesnt change the fact that it is. Worst case, if you cant find anyone who knows funny US coins you might have to take to a National Bank, but I do not know the commerce laws in all countries so I will not pretend I do. The Statue of Liberty coin and the previous meteorite coins are made of silver, so you would be pretty stupid for exchanging it for face value. (The Brenham coin will also be made of silver). Re: [meteorite-list] Potter: RFS Picture of the Day - January 27, 2007
Darren wrote the following based on Find a Falling Star, pgs. 117 and 118. The Potter, Nebraska meteorite was found by farmer Cecil McKinney when large rocks were struck by his tractor. After digging several large masses from his field, because of their unusual density he used some of them as weights on his disc plow while tilling land until his son-in-law had a chance encounter with HH Nininger in a Sterling, Colorado truck stop and quickly recognized that a small meteorite Nininger had placed on the counter looked much like the large stones on his father-in-law's farm. Samples mailed to Nininger were positively identified by Nininger who then traveled to the farm and purchased around 260 kilograms of the weathered brecciated L6 meteorite. A 1941 newspaper article, which does note the McKinneys name, something the Nininger recollection in FAFS does not, has a slightly different story. http://www.meteoritearticles.com/znp02261941.html Find a Falling Star was purchased in 1972, and was mostly written by Abbey. This leads me to believe the newspaper article is likely more correct. Re: [meteorite-list] Potter: RFS Picture of the Day - January 27, 2007
The details that I wrote up that disagreed with the Nininger book and the article came from Dirk, so I suspect that they are more correct than either of the above sources. I do not see a disagreement with what you wrote and what is in Niningers book. This leads me to suspect that Dirk is using FAFS as a reference. No reference is noted so if I am wrong, please correct me Dirk. The difference in the two accounts is that Nininger says in the book that he met that brother-in-law at a Colorado truck stop, while the article says that the McKinneys were referred to Nininger by a local guy. Also the NPA seems to refer to the find as recent in 1941, and only notes two stones had so far been found and sold, while in FAFS, Nininger says (in the paragraph after you left off) that We recovered a total of sixty-five meteorites during 1937-38. Each has something of a story. But to me You will note in the FAFS, that Nininger does not mention the names of the finder, which he has no problem doing in much of the rest of FAFS. This may mean that Nininger did not have any reference on the purchases in front of him, and that he is recalling the story from memory. As I stated before Nininger didnt actually write the book. From reading personal letters and a few accounts in FAFS, it appears Abbey did a good portion of all the writing for all the Nininger books. At the time of FAFS Nininger was quite unhealthy, so Margret and Huss were doing the lions share of all work, and likely helped with the writing/editing. Dirk mentioned before to the list of having seen some receipts, if I remember right, so perhaps he could shed a little more light on this. Perhaps even provide scans of hopefully dated receipts? Right now I would still more rely with an at the time account (Nininger was still recovering Potter in 1941), rather then a few paragraphs wrote 35 years, and a 100 meteoites, after the event. [meteorite-list] 1906 Selma Meteorite NPA
Paper: The Newport Daily News City: Newport, Rhode Island Date: Sunday, December 22, 1906 Page: 4 (of 10) METEORITE FOUND IN A HAYFIELD. The largest entire stone meteorite ever found, according to Professor Hovey, of the Museum of Natural History, New York. It was found March 26 in a hayfield about two miles from Selma, Ala., by J. W. Coleman. It is 20½ inches high, 20 inches wide and 13 inches thick, and weighs 306 pounds. In shape it is roughly polygonal. Professor Hovey says that most aerolites break to pieces while passing through the earth's atmosphere, probably on account of unequal heating due to friction. The meteorite had evidently lade embedded where it fell since 1895. July 26 of that year several people, living in the vicinity heard a rumbling noise and saw a flaming mass shooting toward the earth. [meteorite-list] 1903 Saline Meteorite, Farrington NPA
Paper: The Arizona Republican City: Phoenix, Arizona Date: Thursday, March 5, 1903 Page: 10 (of 16) Under CURRENT COMMENT The Story of a Meteorite. Professor Farrington of the Field Columbian museum, is reported to have found free phosphorus in a meteorite discovered in Saline county, Kan. In some comments upon this discovery it is said that free phosphorus is not found in terrestrial substances. Hence the deduction that meteorites come from outside space. This may be a confirmation of an old deduction. It certainly is not new. It has long been the belief of scientists that meteorite come from space out side our planet. It is a further deduction, we are told, that meteorites are not hot, as is generally supposed, but come from extremely cold places somewhere out in space. Let us not be so unjust to Professor Farrington as to suppose he talks like that. He knows it is not generally supposed that meteorites are hot, so long as they are in space. But when they enter our atmosphere the friction makes them hot. In fact, the heat so generated disintegrated them, so the only those of considerable size reach terra firma in sold form. Professor Farrington would not be likely to talk about very cold places somewhere out in space. We have no very good reason to believe that far out in space one place is much colder than another or that there is enough oxygen anywhere there to prevent the existence of free phosphorus. A more interesting deduction is that either a meteorite containing free phosphorous can never come from a warm place where oxygen is prevalent, like our planet or else that if it was projected into space from such a planet or sun the extreme cold or other influence of space has the effect to chemically separate phosphorus from other substances. The presence of free phosphorus in a meteorite is certainly very interesting, whether we consider the phenomenon of the persistence of phosphorous in this state in spite of the great heat generated in the meteorite by passing through our atmosphere or speculate upon the possible origin of a body containing phosphorus in that state. The fact seems to suggest the existence of matter which has never been associated with the great masses of matter - suns and planets - where heat is believed always to be present or to have been present at some time - Chicago Chronicle. [meteorite-list] 1860 New Concord NPA, Hammer Stone?
Paper: The Wisconsin Daily Patriot City: Madison, Wisconsin Date: Tuesday, May 22, 1860 Page: 1 (of 4) A Meteoric Shower in Ohio. The following is a definite and detailed account of this interesting and startling phenomena: HENDRYSBURG, O., May 9, 1860. Dear Professor: - You will doubtless see in the papers an account of a shower of meteoric stones that fell on the 1st inst., near the village of Concord, in Muskingum County, Ohio. Lest you should think it a hoax, or at least an incorrect account. I have taken such pains as circumstances would permit to obtain as near as possible all the facts and circumstances connected with it. The shower took place between 12 and 1 o'clock p.m. The day was unusually cool for the season of the year, and the sky about two-thirds overcast with clouds. Simultaneously with the fall of the stones a tremendous explosion took place in the atmosphere. To there near by it resembled a severe clap of thunder in sound, but was accompanied by a jarring sound, which, together with the noise, was felt and heard at a much greater distance than the effect of thunder. It was observed and remarked as something peculiar by persons fifty miles off. I was at the time about thirty miles distant, and so extraordinary was the detonation and jarring sensation that I thought it (although an unknown occurrence in this region) an earthquake shock; in that, such was the general opinion of all who heard it. To those near where the stones fell several distinct reports were heard - accounts very from six to twelve; they were in rapid succession, perhaps not over a second of time between them. So strange was the sensation that cattle in the fields ran started at it. Four stones were seen to fall and have been recovered, but the probabilities are that many others fell. Two, which fell within about six hundred yards of each others, were seen by a couple of men who were laboring in a field. Hearing the reports one of the men looked up and saw a large body fall into a field close by; the other, looking in another direction, saw another which fell upon a fence. Within about twenty minutes they approached and dug out the one which had fallen on the field, where it had buried itself to the depth of about twenty inches in the still limestone soil. It was still so hot that it could scarcely be held in the hands. From the direction in which it entered the earth its fall appeared to be vertical. Its weight was fifty-one pounds, and its shape irregular, long and flattened, but resembling somewhat the enclosed sketch. It entered the ground point foremost. The other, which fell upon the fence, weighed forty-two pounds. In its descent it cut through the rails on the fence, and buried itself in the earth, having a direction apparently from the north-east. About one and a half-miles from where these two stones fell, a young man plowing a field, heard a strange, whizzing sound overhead, and, looking up, saw the clouds in a strange state of commotion. (The same with regard to the agitation of the clouds was observed by others.) Thinking that he heard something fall, upon searching he found a stone weighing thirty-six pounds, which had fallen upon, and imbedded itself in a decaying log. - It was supposed that it had in its fall a direction from the south-east. Near Claysville, about six miles distant, two gentlemen walking out heard the explosion, and very soon afterward a stone weighing four lbs. fell near them, striking the ground so obliquely as to ricochet. The direction of this appeared to be from the north. The four stones about mentioned were all there were seen to fall, another, however, was found which had fallen in the woods and lodged in the earth among a thick cluster of roots surrounding a beach tree. It weighed about thirty pounds, and appeared to have fallen vertically. All of the stones were irregular in figure and had the same general appearance, having a blackened smooth vitrilited surface. This exterior coating was, however, very thin - not one-fiftieth of an inch in thickness. Within the stones had an ashy color, and contained fine particles of some shining substances, probably native nickel. Enclosed I send you a very small specimen which I picked off a large lump. It was my desire to send you a large piece, of, if possible one of the stones entire, but all except the largest one were broken up and the pieces distributed along persons who, while the marvel last, attach to them great value. The largest one (yet unbroken) is the possession of A. S. Milholland, from who, if desirable, you might possibly obtain it for the Smithsonian. You could, I presume, obtain further information and probably a specimen by writing to Dr. M. McConnell or the Rev. Mr. Seigfred, at Concord, Ohio. I write under very unfavorable circumstances, but hope that you will be able to decipher it. Yours truly, JND, Tidball,

Paper: Janesville Daily Gazette City: Janesville, Wisconsin Date: Tuesday Evening, May 8, 1860 Page: 3 (of 8) AN EARTHQUAKE IN EASTERN OHIO - The Columbus Fact of Thursday evening, says: On Tuesday last the counties of Guernsey, Belmont and Harrison, in eastern Ohio, were visited by an earthquake, more serious than any preceding one which there is any record in this section of the country. The earthquake lasted for about thirty minutes (or seconds?) producing the most intense excitement among the inhabitants, and striking terror to the heart of all who happened to be within its range. At Cambridge, Barnesville and other points, the citizens assembled together in the streets, and prayed for a safe deliverance from the destined face which seemed impending. Probably the most singular feature of the event, long to be remembered by those who saw and felt it, was the falling of what is supposed to be meteoric stones in various portions of that locality. Four large stones, weighing from forty to sixty pounds each fell on or near the track of the Central Ohio Railroad, near Concord, burying themselves in the ground two feet, while at Claysville, south-east of Cambridge, and other portions of the country, stones of the same quality, but in greater quantities, fell to the earth. The Cambridge Jeffersonian of Friday makes the following mention of the matter: No little excitement has arisen from the report that the rumbling sound which alarmed the delicate nerves of so many of our fair sex, on Tuesday last, was caused by the falling of a shower of stones, coming in an oblique direction toward the south-east. The specimens that we have seen are angular, of light-gray color internally, and of dark metallic on the outside. They are very compact and heavy. This meteorite fell in Muskingum county, Ohio on May 1, 1860 at 12:45 p.m. More then thirty pieces, 227 kg., of this L6 stone chondrite was recovered. Paper: Whitewater Register City: Whitewater, Wisconsin Date: Saturday, May 19, 1860 Page: 1 (of 4) Fall of Meteoric Stones in Ohio. From the Zanesville Courier An extraordinary phenomenon occurred on Tuesday, about noon, which has been noticed in many counties in Eastern Ohio. This occurrence, although it may be incredible to some, was certainly noticed by many in different localities about the same time. In this city the explosion or noise was distinctly heard. At New Concord, sixteen miles east, a gentleman who was out in his field heard a large crash, similar to sharp thunder, a succession of which lasted half a minute, and then died away, like the sound of a receding train of cars. On looking up he observed an object descending, with great rapidity, in an angling direction, and on marking where it touched the earth, he there found a stone imbedded two feet in the earth, and somewhat warm, weighing 52 lbs. Another was found of 56 lbs., one of 40 and one of 86 lbs., in weight, all within the circumference of a few miles. A small portion of one of these we have in our sanctum. At Bellair the concussion was so strong as to force open the large doors of a car house. At Malaga some of the inhabitances wore frightened, thinking of an earthquake. The shock at Barnesville seemed to jar the buildings to their foundations. Some boys were out in the woods near McConnellsville, which is perhaps thirty miles from Concord, and observed what they termed a large red ball descending to the earth with a fiery tail to it, but were so frightened as to immediately return home. From the Columbus Statesman, May 5th. A correspondent in New Concord, Muskingum County, in a letter published in the Statesman on Tuesday morning, mentioned a singular phenomenon in that neighborhood on Tuesday. It was an astounding noise in the sky like the roar of a cannon, which was followed by the fall of a number of stones, weighing from two to fifty pounds. Since the date of our correspondent's note we have received other letters from the same region of country, which not only corroborate his statement, but add greatly to the singularity of the phenomena. It appears that the noise alluded to was heard through a wide range of country, and that stones of the kind described were found freshly imbedded in the earth in the same manner, miles apart. In Morgan, Muskingum, Coshocton, Morrow and Tuscarawas County the explosion was distinctly head. Near McConnellsville several boys observed a huge stone descend to the earth, which they averred looked like a red ball, leaving a line of smoke in its wake. A gentleman walking the field, near New Concord, hard a terrific crash like thunder , which lasted half a minute, and then plainly saw a large body descending through the air in an angling direction, with a velocity apparently much greater then it could have attained by its own momentum. Going to the spot where it touched the ground, he found a rock weighing over fifty pounds, embedded in the earth a depth of two feet. The phenomena seems to be unprecedented. These stones were found nearly fifty miles apart, although the explosion was heard at all the places mentioned from the direction of New Concord. Houses were shaken by the shock, and in one or two instances the doors bursted open. It occasioned a great deal of consternation in that section of the country, as well it might. Paper: Dawsons Fort Wayne Daily Times City: Fort Wayne, Indiana Date: Wednesday, June 6, 1860 Page: 7 (of 10) ONE OF THE METEORIC STONES. - The Ohio State Journal of the 18th, speaking of the recent meteoric showers in Guernsey county, of that State, says: One of the meteors has been laid upon our table by Mr. John Burdick, of this city, who dug it from its concealment in the bosum of the earth on his farm in Guernsey county. The meteor flashed upon our astonished vision, perfectly docile, a black, wedge-shaped mass of conglomerate rock, with a very mysterious smell. The meteor weighs just nine pounds, and was seen to descend like a streak of lightning blazing like molten iron. It penetrated the earth about a foot and a half, leaving a huge hole. Mr. Burdick has several of these missiles of Heaven's artillery, which he will exhibit to the curious at his residence. (end) Hello all, I have found a dozen or more other New Concord 1860 NPA's, but the one posted have the most good information. None referenced the meteorite hitting any animal, however the very detailed report (a letter sent to the Smithsonian) notes it as having broken a fence.
