[meteorite-list] AD: Brand new meteorite book - Signed copies for sale
Paid AD - 12 of 12 Hi all, Happy to announce exclusive availability of a brand new meteorite book. *** BRAND NEW METEORITE BOOK l 'Meteorites - The story of our solar system' by Caroline Smith, Sara Russell and Natasha Almeida Exclusively available from Msg-Meteorites prior to the official publication date of 21st February. I have copies signed by all 3 authors available for sale at the normal RRP of £14.99 plus shipping. Shipping will be in a cardboard book mailer - UK - £3, Europe £7, USA £10 (Sorry for the high shipping costs but that's what I pay) For anyone in London, I will exclusively have copies for sale at European AstroFest 2019 in a few weeks. I can also deliver copies free to the Ensisheim Show in June. For those in the USA, maybe you can ask someone going to Ensisheim to pick you up a copy? In 'Meteorites', leading experts from the Natural History Museum, London provide a compelling and cutting edge introduction to the evolving science of meteoritics. They reveal what meteorites are, where they are most likely to be found, and the type of celestial bodies that they hail from. The book contains all the latest information on key meteorite falls and considers some of the big questions that still remain – such as whether our solar system is unusual in creating a planet that supports life, and if it is likely we will find complex life elsewhere. With a mix of photographs, diagrams and maps, Meteorites is essential reading for all those with an interest in the nature of our solar system. AUTHORS - Caroline Smith is Head of Earth Sciences Collections and Principal Curator of Meteorites at the Natural History Museum, London. - Sara Russell is Merit Researcher in Cosmic Mineralogy and Planetary Sciences at the Natural History Museum. She is a Science Team member of NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission, and proud namesake of Asteroid Sararussell. - Natasha Almeida is a Postdoctoral Researcher in Mineral and Planetary Sciences at the Natural History Museum. She specializes in the very rare enstatite chondrites meteorites. All the best. Re: [meteorite-list] Fwd: Lots of Gold and Meteorites on Heritage Auctions
Adam, I am more than comfortable with my reputation and what I have contributed to the world of meteorites. I don't need to blow smoke up my arse or have the need to constantly have others prop up my fragile ego. As for your opinion of me, well it's quite obvious I could not care a jot what your opinion is, it is meaningless to me as it is to most! (a fact that is backed up by all of the messages I've had in private :-)) And as for calling you out, whether on this list or on Facebook, how you can state that that is 'behind your back' just shows your levels of paranoid delusion! This list and facebook are both public forums and I am more than happy to speak my mind on either! And as for the rest of your garbled message, if it was actually coherent, readable and understandable then I might be able to reply.. But, as Johannes says folk are here to talk about meteorites so I won't bore them by responding further. However I'm more than sure that you'll want to have the final word and cement your reputation as someone who is losing the plot by clambering onto your rickety soapbox and ranting further whilst dribbling into your bib.. [meteorite-list] New podcast
Hi all, Back in 2015, myself, Luther Jackson, Graham Ensor and Matthew Smith put on a large display of meteorites at CosmicCon, a large space event held in Manchester, UK. There were Apollo Astronauts, the Meteorite Men and various other space themed areas. I was interviewed whilst there by Steve Rogers (Lach) along with Apollo astronauts Al Worden, Kathy Thornton and Jack Lousma. I was certainly out of my league with these guys, I mean I just own small pieces of the moon, I've never actually been there! Lach has been busy with other projects these last two years but has now compiled the interviews into a new podcast. It's definitely worth a listen :-) So to paraphrase 'Offspring'... Ah, it's time to relax, And you know what that means, A glass of wine, your favourite easy chair, And of course this compact disc playing and your home stereo. So go on, indulge yourself, That's right, kick off your shoes, put your feet up, Lean back and just enjoy the 'show'. After all, the 'beauty of space' soothes even the savage beasts. (https://lach.bandcamp.com/album/the-lach-klatch-episode-1-be-cosmic) Enjoy :-) Cheers Martin -- Martin Goff www.msg-meteorites.co.uk IMCA #3387 __ Visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/meteoritecentral and the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist3.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Black Beauty :-)
Hi all, I'm very happy to announce a new Black Beauty pairing, NWA 11220 (provisional) Black Beauty is perhaps not an obvious beauty but when you probe under the surface, beauty is really an understatement! The first sample recovered, NWA 7034 was not at first even recognised as being from Mars. Now classified as a Martian Basaltic Breccia, NWA 7034, along with a few pairings found since then is one of the most important meteorites scientifically of the last few years. One of the reasons is it’s age, 4.2 billion years old! There are only two Martian meteorites known to be over 4 billion years old, and those are Black Beauty and the infamous ALH 84001. Not only this but Black Beauty also contains Martian water, water that is over 4 billion years old from Mars! How amazing is that! Specimens available for sale can be seen here: (http://msg-meteorites.co.uk/tradesale/meteorites-for-sale/ lunar-and-martian-specimens/nwa-11220-martian-basaltic-breccia-black-beauty/) As always, first come served :-) Cheers Martin Martin Goff www.msg-meteorites.co.uk IMCA #3387 Sent from my mobile phone __ Visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/meteoritecentral and the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist3.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] BIMS yearly call for donations
Hi all, It's that time of year again when we put out our annual call for donations to help fund the British and Irish Meteorites Societys (BIMS) activities for the next year. The more we grow as a society and the more outreach/educational events that we attend the greater grow our costs hence asking for donations and the money raised each year will go towards these continuing expenses. Any expenditure before being paid must be authorised by Mark Ford (Chairman) and myself (Treasurer) The monies raised will be used for display materials and other costs associated with putting on outreach displays. The Paypal email to donate to is britishmeteor...@gmail.com Many thanks in advance for your assistance in making BIMS the society that it is and helping to make it even better and wishing you all a fabulous and fulfilling 2017. Re: [meteorite-list] SPACE ROCKS MAGAZINE
Hi all, The problem as I see it is that Blurb are not just a distributor but the printer too so it's not just a question of switching companies. Blurb use different printing and distribution bases according to the buyers location so not all copies are sent from the US. Copies Sent to the UK seem to have been sent from the Czech Republic so not sure why the shipping is so high for you Sergey? The shipping is certainly high but that is out of Michael's control. All I can say is that the magazine itself is more than worth the cost given the quality of the product but it is a shame the shipping cost is putting some people off. I am more than happy to get multiple copies ordered and then bring to Ensisheim for anyone who wants to wait rather than pay shipping. Just let me know :-) Just want to give a shout out to Michael Johnson who has put his heart and soul and many many hours into this project and the end result is truly excellent. I for one will do everything I can to help and support him so that this grows and becomes a great resource to the entire meteorite community. I am sure that Michael would welcome any help from others too, be that submitting articles and photos, offers of helping to distribute copies of the magazine or just general support and encouragement. The magazine is for us all and we need to support it any way we can. Re: [meteorite-list] SPACE ROCKS MAGAZINE
Hi Sergey, Marcin, Zsolt, all, Just had a thought regards your high shipping prices quoted. Did you change the currency to your local currency before ordering? I noticed that in your screenshot you posted Sergey that it was in US dollars. On the Blurb website you can change the currency and I guess that is how the shipping is worked out in combination with your address. Try it and see if it makes a difference? [meteorite-list] Stolen Sikhote Alin meteorite
Hi all, I am sad to have to report that one of my Sikhote Alin specimens was taken from one of our recent BIMS displays. It is a fantastic oriented shield weighing 50.4 grams. Please see photos of the specimen on my website at the link below and let me know if you see it or are offered it for sale. [meteorite-list] AD: High quality complete polarising microscope setup ready to attach SLR camera
(2nd and last free AD this year) Hi all, Through much trial and error and through much hard work and disappointment I have now arrived at a polarising microscope setup for thin section examination and photography that i am happy with. During this journey I have tried many different setups from different manufacturers and bought countless accessories, parts and adapters both new and second hand. I have now been able through having additional parts to build more microscopes the same setup as my own. The parts are actually worth a whole lot more sold separately but I would love for someone to get use out of and enjoy the complete setup. It really is amazing to add another dimension to your meteorite collecting to be able to view thin sections in cross polarised light. I have now sold two of these to happy customers within the meteorite community and will shortly have another one available. Fully insured shipping can be accommodated via fedex pretty much anywhere. Cost will be around $200 to Europe and around $300 to the USA. The microscope is a Nikon Optiphot full polarising setup and dependant on options the cost would be between $2600 and $3200 plus shipping. My own setups can be seen here: (https://flic.kr/s/aHsjFKUpkE) The below is a list of what it could include with options: - Nikon Optiphot main microscope frame - Nikon trinocular head - 2 x Nikon 10x CFW eyepieces - Nikon rotatable analyser with DIN standard 6mm by 20mm compensator slot (no compensator included but can do for an additional $300) - Nikon centreable 4x hole nosepiece (needed to centre the field of view when rotating the stage and much rarer and more expensive then the standard non-centreable 5 hole version) - Nikon objectives x 3 (probably 10x, 20x and 40x) This would give magnifications of 100x, 200x and 400x) - Rotating stage with 2 x slide clips - Nikon strain free NA 0.90 condensor with swing out lens - Swing out lower polariser - Nikon 50 watt, 12 Volt lamp housing with bulb and 1 x spare bulb - Light compensating filter box with 4 x push down filters (1 of these is the NCB10 filter which corrects the halogen light to a normal colour temperature so it doesnt have an orange cast when viewing and taking photos (hard to find and expensive) - Mains power lead (bear in mind this is the 240 volt UK plug version so you will need an adapter for it to work for you) - DSLR (Nikon or Canon etc) adapter that slots straight into the trino tube as mentioned above If a camera adapter is included it will be a fully fledged, plug in and go system ready to add your DSLR and will work straight out of the box to take high quality photos of meteorite thin sections :-) I will also consider trades or part sale/trades. Have a look at the above and let me know what you think :-) Cheers Martin Martin Goff www.msg-meteorites.co.uk IMCA #3387 Sent from my mobile phone __ Visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/meteoritecentral and the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist3.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Awfully quiet
Hi Anne, David, Matthias and all, I certainly don't think that anyone intentionally wants this list to end as like you we have all had many years of great information from it. I just think times change and bit by bit things happen, people post elsewhere as well as here and find out they get more replies, more quickly and they can reply with a photo to make a point better etc. And then they make a choice to use the other forum in preference and etc etc. And then before you know it traffic is hugely increased elsewhere and is quieter here. I completely understand the issue people have with privacy on facebook but there are many many settings that you can lock down. Also the biggest thing here, is you choose what to post, who to accept into your 'friends' list, which photos you submit etc. You have that control. I understand that for some folk, it may be like Anne says, a bitter pill to swallow, but if I had a business then i would swallow that pill instantly. Hi all, Just wanted to post here as it concerns my post to the IMCA list. My post was basically exactly the same as posted here to the metlist and also on facebook etc. I had posted to all these forums and lists to say i had recently uploaded an article on a recent outreach event that i had attended. I had partly also done this to see which forum yielded the most interaction, it was no surprise to me that Facebook came out top in this respect. This conversation seems to have spilled out onto the metlist from the IMCA list and my post here is purely for the metlist just to explain my motivation in my original post :-) Cheers Martin On 23 November 2014 at 17:50, Galactic Stone Ironworks via Meteorite-list meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com wrote: Hi Jim, That is exactly my point. Look, the last thing I want to do is pick a fight with the IMCA. Been there, done that, don't want to do it again. I buried the hatchet years ago and I wish the IMCA success in their endeavors. When anyone makes a statement that implies that IMCA-sourced specimens are a safer buy for collectors, then that is also an implied statement that non-IMCA specimens are less trustworthy and therefore less desirable. This hurts the non-members who are honest but choose not to be members. Here is an analogy : The IMCA is like a fraternity for meteorite dealers. In many ways, it functions like a college fraternity - you have to pledge and be sponsored by a member. You have rules to obey to remain a member. But outside the confines of the fraternity house, all members are the same as non-members : they are all students studying the same courses offered by the same professors. Being a fraternity member does not make one's college degree any more valid than a non-member's. How do I really know that it is Battle Mountain and not one of hundreds of NWA L6 look-a-likes? Regardless of whether or not the seller is an IMCA member, how can one guarantee authenticity of any specimen, unless that particular specimen has been examined and analyzed by a reputable scientist? I do not know of any dealers who have every batch of material they acquire tested at a lab. They use a combination of faith in their sources and hand-examination to determine if the material should be offered. Sure, new unclassified material is analyzed to have it classified and officially approved by Met Soc. But what about NWA 869? How many dealers have their NWA 869 analyzed prior to offering it? Since I have written seven articles (about 50 pages) and have edited the wohle meteorite part of this book, I'd like to make some additions, especially four our collector friends in the US. The 2014 Munich Show book METEORITES will be available at the Tucson Show 2015 at several booths. For those who don't want so long, maybe a collective order from the Munich Show web site https://munichshow.com/en/shop/the-show-catalogues/ is a good clue. [meteorite-list] Now for something a little bit different..............
Hi all, Now for something a little bit different... See link below for some photos of a cast of the impact pit made by the famous Middlesbrough meteorite on 14th March 1881. (https://www.flickr.com/photos/94515040@N03/sets/72157646778504309/) I know lots of you now have a cast of the Middlesbrough meteorite so i thought you may be interested in seeing a cast of the Middlesbrough impact pit that i acquired back in 2011 but have just uncovered in my garage today Not yet mounted it properly in a display case but i plan on making a replica wooden crate which is how it was originally housed when the pit was originally dug up. The meteorite is housed at the Yorkshire Museum in York and more info on the historic meteorite fall can be seen here: (http://www.yorkshiremuseum.org.uk/collections-2/collections-highlights/the-middlesbrough-meteorite/) Enjoy :-) Cheers Martin -- Martin Goff www.msg-meteorites.co.uk IMCA #3387 __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist3.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
