I know we have space based weather radar satellites, but what about pointing them into empty space to search for asteroids? Sorry if this is a dumb question... Just curious. Regards, Eric Not a dumb question and one that I field every so often. While it could be possible to detect NEOs and other asteroids usig a space based radar system, such a system would be ungodly expensive and difficult to construct and operate. Remember that radar works by sending our the radio signal and then observing the reflected energy. The radio telescopes here on earth that observe asteroids and other planets using radar are huge (The dishes at Goldstone and Arecibo) and they require huge amounts of power to operate. The engineering alone would make the project unlikely and the power requirements make it a non-starter. Also, while we are familiar with air traffic and weather radar systems here on the surface, these are vastly less powerful than what would be required by an NEO detection system. ATC radar can be much less powerful than required to paint every target because most aircraft have a transponder installed. The transponder in effect hears the radar pulse and transmits essentially a Here I am! message in response. Asteroids of course have no such transponder, so you have to paint the asteroid and then detect the reflected signal. Finally, most radar systems have narrow beams. This Field of View is tiny on the two dishes I mentioned. The optical community frequently gets requests for continuing observations of NEOs that will be observed with radar to make sure they point the telescope precisely enough that the asteroid is in their beam. Even a handful of arcseconds off (an arcsecond is 1/3600 of a degree) and they miss the asteroid entirely. Optical telescopes can have very wide fields of view and are relative cheap to build and operate making them the obvious choice, especially in this cash strapped era. Re: [meteorite-list] Space Radar?
I've got an idea. (imagine that) ;) Since funding for space programs and missions seems to be so damned hard to get, and budget cuts usually effect the space program first. Perhaps someone should package this program/mission as a defense program. A private company seems to get a government defense contract much easier than a scientific study and research grant right? Technically this is a war of our world. We're a sitting duck in a solar system sized pond for those 140m and 1km sized objects. Anything larger than 140m can do serious damage, kill millions of people, cause hundreds of billions of dollars in damage, and damage the infrastructure of our nation to an extent it would cripple us on a national security and financial level such that's never been seen before in the history of humanity. After effects from an impact of even a 140m sized object say on Manhattan Island NY would wipe out all of downtown New York City, killing over 10 million people and destroying a world financial hub. Disease would run rampant, hospitals for hundreds of miles around would fill with the injured, and our first responder system would be overwhelmed. It was overwhelmed with 9/11. I couldn't imagine an asteroid strike. Not that an asteroid would slam New York, I'm just using that as an extreme example. The statistical chance of one hitting the Earth is very low, much less that it would impact New York. One could impact in the ocean. 75% chance of that happening right? Maybe that's why the gov isn't doing much on this? Statistics? But those statistics are only based on the ones we know about. It's the one you don't know about that gets you. The more I learn about asteroids, meteorites, and where they come from, the more I realize that there's more out there that we don't know, than we do know. It's sobering for sure. The more we search, the more we find. More eyes open looking up gives us a better chance of seeing one before it surprises us. It just boggles my mind hat the gov doesn't devote more time to this given that we are finding so many larger sized asteroids out there at an ever increasing rate. It hasn't slowed, it's increased, and as technology gets better, I'd hazard a guess that we'll find ever more. Little more than 100 years ago there was a little event in Russia that leveled thousands of square miles of forest in a remote area. Tunguska should have been a wake up call for everyone. But alas the human memory is nothing compared to the cosmic memory of the universe. 100 years is nothing in cosmic time, and we have no way to know whats out there unless we're looking up. Perhaps ignorance is bliss. Close your eyes everyone, it won't hurt much. I think people may underestimate the number of rocks out there with our name on it. Maybe I'm overestimating, but I don't think so. Sorry if this seems all doom and gloom, but the USA perhaps should fund this through both a scientific AND and defense related mission. I know this was a bit of a rhetorical question, but I'll add a bit more to this discussion for those who may not be familiar with the topic. Unless I missed something, the United States is the only country funding NEO surveys at this time, so apparently the worth of the earth, as ascribed by the rest of the world is nothing, zip, nada. At least on this topic I think you're point is probably better formed by the question How much is our civilization or species worth? About one month ago we had a meeting here in Tucson consisting of representatives from all of the current major NEO surveys, professional follow up observatories, other associated parties and Lindley Johnson and Don Yeomans. Don may be familiar to some of you and he is the Manager of the NEO Program Office at JPL and Lindley is the Program Officer at NASA HQ. Lindley commented that as March 1st the estimated population of NEOs 1km in diameter and larger was estimated at 940 to 1050 objects. with a total of 6938 known NEOs of all sizes. At that time we had discovered 909 1km and larger NEOs, or approximately 87 - 97% of the population. Since we were tasked at finding 90% of all NEOs in this size range, we have effectively completed the original goal of the Spaceguard program, but he did stress that we aren't ready to make this claim just yet. To prove the point that we aren't quite finished, I picked up another 1km object on my very first run on a telescope after the meeting. As you know the 1km diameter was chosen because it is the size object that will end our civilization and anything much larger than that will make us go extinct. The next phase has not yet started
Re: [meteorite-list] Space Radar?
What about IR? What about funding a public or private RD company/group that might be able to modify existing, or create new technology for asteroid defense? A network of telescopes is a good start. We have that, and millions of amateur astronomers out there could look skyward too. How many millions could be generated by a privately funded asteroid hunting program? So radar is out for early warning? Low powered Doppler? Could space based radar be used for early Meteorite Fall prediction? Could radar used for locating smaller closer objects that might impact Earth? It's not about money or politics or priorities. It's about geometry. Anything that a radar can do in space, passive optical detectors can do FAR, FAR better. Asteroid detection with telescopes is an inverse square law problem; asteroid detection with radars is a range to the *4th* power problem. Thus radar is useless for early warning. Where radar is VERY useful is for pinging NEOs that have already been discovered (quite likely by the Catalina Sky Survey) in order to refine the knowledge of their exact orbits. We can only do this for NEOs that come quite close to earth (due to that pesky 1/range^4 factor), and thanks to their enormous size ground-based radars will always be far more sensitive and powerful than anything we could put up in orbit. --Rob -Original Message- From: meteorite-list-boun...@meteoritecentral.com [mailto:meteorite-list-boun...@meteoritecentral.com] On Behalf Of Meteorites USA Sent: Thursday, April 14, 2011 11:02 AM To: Richard A. A novel idea would be to publish what was ACTUALLY WRITTEN. Seems a simple fix to me. Since rebuttals are getting chopped up, sliced and diced, and edited until they no longer convey the originally intended message, or worse gets turned into a message which might reinforce NYT's own stance, perhaps the NYT should publish Unedited rebuttals. Thereby keeping the purity of the letters, and journalism. Simply limit the number of words to say 250 or 500, and set some basic ground rules. Be professional, no profanity, verifiable facts, etc. This would of course require extra time and effort and perhaps research and fact checking on the NYT's part though. ;) Regards, Eric On 4/12/2011 12:40 PM, Matson, Robert D. wrote: Hi All, The main problem with the Times' editing of Darryl's submission is that they altered his factually correct letter into an inaccurate (or at best, misleading) one. Re: [meteorite-list] OT -Oil reserves, the reality
Go electric. Eric On 4/8/2011 1:30 PM, Michael Gilmer wrote: Before Art politely asks us to shut down this OT thread, I wanted to add a little something. I lived in southern Louisiana for 10 years. For those of you who have never been there, let me describe the area in one word - DIRTY. Don't get me wrong, I met some of the nicest people there. But the land, air, and water are filthy by any definition of the word. Why? Because the oil industry is everywhere in southern Louisiana. It is not being environmentalist or liberal to say that oil is a dirty industry. It is the truth that the oil companies go to great lengths to obfuscate. Anyone who has been near an oil refinery or drilling rig will tell you - it is dirty. It produces copious amounts of pollution even under the best of circumstances and regulations. Everywhere oil has a presence, it's footprint is big and dirty. I'm glad our governor had the sense to restrict on-shore drilling. I enjoy clean beaches, wildlife, and unspoiled natural areas. I want my grandson to grow up with these same beaches. The fact that some self-centered, short-sighted people think we should destroy our land in order to drive Humvees and use gas-powered leaf blowers to clean their driveways does not impress me in the least. If they love oil that much, let them go build a house next to an oil refinery and have their children grow up in an area soaked with carcinogens. I sweep my driveway with a broom and I rake my yard with a rake. When I used to work at Lowes, I'd see people pull up in their Humvees and purchase a yard-vacuum attachment for their riding mower - so they can have an aesthetically pleasing yard free of bothersome leaves with a minimum of work. It's laziness and entitlement - pure and simple. The attitude is - I worked hard for mine, so screw you, screw your kids and screw the planet. If I want to burn fossil fuels to clean my lawn, I am entitled to do so. If people would wise up, grow up, and act like adults, we could slash our oil consumption considerably. We burn oil and gasoline for the stupidest things - all because we have the freedom to do so. One of the first lessons every child should learn is - just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should. Many adults have never learned this lesson. I never want Florida to look like Louisiana. There is a reason nobody lines up to take vacations on Louisiana or Texas beaches. And there is a reason why Florida's beaches are famous around the world. That reason is very easy to see. Every time I hear somebody say drill, baby, drill!, I want to drill them in their face with my fist. I could but I don't - because I am not a child and I can control my urges - unlike many fools who burn gas like it grows on trees. Do the math! We consume 6.6 billion barrels per year - even using the imaginary number of 24 billion barrels, that is only 3-4 years - that does not free us from foreign oil (at least not in my lifetime - maybe you're planning to pop off in the next year or so). To take this farther, the Green River formation has *way* more potential than the Bakken formation, and it is estimated that it can only yield some 1 million bbls/day at maximum capacity, but we can't recover it economically yet; USGS estimates put it out to 20yrs or more before the technical and economic hurdles are overcome. Greg, you are correct in noting that it has been determined that we are better off importing cheap foreign oil and keeping ours in reserve. We aren't likely ever to be oil exporters on the scale of Saudi Arabia, however. Mike, I completely agree that petroleum should be used for plastic, not burned, but we don't have viable alternatives for transportation at this time. And the other Mike, yes, why don't we try to use less? That's a very good idea, and I, for one, believe that reducing our dependence on foreign oil is good for our national security, but we don't have enough of our own to do so (yet). Politicians are not preventing the oil companies from exploiting oil shales, simple economics is. Politics seldom gets in the way

I will be conducting interviews as well. I've spoken with a few of you already, (thanks for your participation) but would like you guys who normally keep quiet to step up and tell your side. A lot of opinions have been shared and I'd like some back and forth from your differing points of view on the forum. Begin Quote-- ...Hi I think the quote is from a post of mine. I still 100% behind the statement and in the case of Gebel Kamil I mostly agree with the article. No matter if a sample is bought second- or third handed, it still very wrong to do so unless it's legal, ethical and morally in order. I my opinion it is a disaster that profit hunters or collectors spoil such places like the Gebel Kamil crater. And yes there's huge problems - It is possible to buy say, Canadian samples, were the permits is not traceable to specific sample. Lars... End Quote-- He got one part absolutely right when he said I’m surely a part of the problem. Not trying to be mean, but this kind of ignorance is what hurts our hobby. It's worse even when it comes from within our community. I will refrain from commenting further on this as I might say something that might be construed as harsh. [meteorite-list] BS In The NYT: Black Market Trinkets From Space
This is one of the most sensationalized, biased, uninformed, and skewed article I've ever read on NYT's website regarding meteorites. Mainly the article focuses on the Gebel Kamil iron meteorite, however it paints a grim picture and tries to draw a connection to all meteorites implying that the private market is somehow damaging the science. Black Market Trinkets From Space: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/05/science/05meteorite.html Quote: Popular or not, the meteorites were taboo. In Egypt and elsewhere, scientists say, it is illegal without a permit to remove meteorites from a country. Quote: Dr. Harvey of Case Western Reserve said the quandary applied to the scientific community as a whole. The rampant looting of meteorite sites and skyrocketing prices for the fragments, he said, “dramatically reduce who can get samples to do the research. Quote: The collectors association, founded in 2004 in Nevada, now has hundreds of members around the globe. And while some traders deal in legitimate exports, many do not. One buyer expressed remorse after reading about scientific angst over the thriving market. “I’m very ashamed,” the buyer wrote on a blog. “I’m surely a part of the problem. This article is irresponsible and borderline yellow journalism from the NYT. They should be ashamed for running such a biased and uninformed story. Well over half of the article weighs on the disadvantages and more than infers a possible damage to science which is not there. It almost completely ignores the great good that's been accomplished through private collecting/hunting/curating or meteorites and the contributions that have been made by private collectors and hunters. It never mentions donations to institutions, how much of a sample is needed to study any meteorite, nor does it mention how many people it brings to the science. There is one very good quote from Anne which states: “The scientists do not have time to go hunt for their own meteorites, so somebody has to do it for them,” said Anne M. Black, president of the collectors association. “It’s common sense.” To the uninformed reader, and inexperienced meteorite collector the NYT article looks very bad and creates an artificially biased view from those not familiar with meteorites. Re: [meteorite-list] Fireball question / sonic boom
Curious... I know there are many variables involved, and it probably varies with the conditions under which each event occurs, but I've read that some people have heard sonic booms (as low boom/rumbles) up to 50 miles away or more. Couldn't one figure out that distance by calculating altitude of any given bolide and air pressure/temp during the time of the event, (since it affects the sound waves at different elevations) to determine how far from the epicenter someone could here the sonic boom? Rick, Thank you very much for the very kind words of support. I've said it before and I can't express in words what that means to me. Yeah, I'm not so regular, but I'm genuine. I hope that counts for something. It's hard work, expensive, and the reward of seeing so many people enjoying something I created, and produced is gratifying and I don't mind indulging in that pride one little bit. I'll tell you the same thing I've told some of my friends. My contributors make this magazine, not me. Re: [meteorite-list] Wickramasinghe Canned, Claims Ageism
I agree with regard to how science is done. It's not up to the majority in science . It's up to the evidence. Science is NOT a democracy nor a dictatorship. You don't vote what truth is, any more than you tell someone what it is. The minority view typically becomes the majority, and generally accepted over time when evidence is proved. Those with ulterior motives, false pride, huge egos, or are afraid of changing the status quo are as bad as corrupt politicians. When politics enters science the science suffers. The whole idea behind science is not to prove yourself right, but to find evidence that proves a hypothesis, regardless of who that hypothesis disagrees with. Peoples' egos are unimportant in the pure scientific process because emotion has no place in pure science. Re: [meteorite-list] The Human Presence in the Solar System
Let the data and knowledge speak for itself. Voyager I II Apollo Missions Space Shuttle Missions Hubble (without which many of these missions would not have been possible or even considered) Spitzer StarDust Dawn EPOXI WISE Spirit Opportunity Curiosity (coming soon to a planet near you) Messenger Hyabusa (not ours, but worth doing) Kepler (perhaps the most important) And many many more successful missions. What else do they want? Come on... The government dropped $700+ Billion on the banks and auto manufacturers... Why can't they spare $100 Billion for the advancement and preservation of the human species? What the advancement of the space program (which has a direct influence on the advancement and survival of the human species) has achieved both intrinsically, and scientifically is immeasurable in dollars. Knowledge is priceless. It's also the most precious and valuable thing in the universe, we should cherish it, where it came from, and how we gained it. More advanced technology, more businesses, more scientists, and more money has been pumped into the economy than can be accurately measured since the beginning of the space program. A student today, who watches the Moon landing on video for the first time may be motivated to study astronomy, or become an astronaut themselves. They may join the military, become a pilot, and perhaps fly a real space craft. Humans are curious. We want to know. It's in our nature, it's what makes us human. Would there be as many people interested in science if NASA had never so much as launched a rocket? Would there be as many astronomers and scientific discoveries if Hubble never existed? The Hubble Deep Field is a perfect example. 1,500 galaxies discovered. Then as if that weren't good enough, another photo was taken, this time deeper into the blackness of space. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field. One photograph 10,000 galaxies in a section of space equal to only 1/1270th of the total area of sky. If the whole sky was photographed and the same data holds true throughout, that's 127 Billion galaxies in the visible/observable universe. And that's not to say there's not more, considering that's at the limits of current technological possibility. If we could see further, would we see more galaxies? Yeah, I'd say that's a safe bet. The economical effects may not be measurable. What is the effects of the money that's injected back into the economy by those entrepreneurs that were inspired to start a new business or create a new technology based on what they learned through the space program? If we never had the space program would we have the technological advancement we have today? Would there be as many scientists advancing human knowledge at an ever growing exponential rate? Re: [meteorite-list] Lorton Meteorite
So basically, IF this Washington Post article is accurate in it's reporting, the landowners dropped the case after getting portrayed as the bad guys in the media by the Doctors who had a free lawyer, no legal fees, and they played the media game. I have to say the Doctors played the game well, it got turned into a PR war, and they won. So this case NEVER went anywhere legally? The actual issue of legal ownership is still not resolved. Regards, Eric On 3/18/2011 11:22 AM, JoshuaTreeMuseum wrote: The landlords got outlawyered: http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/whatever-happened-to-the-lorton-meteorite-/2011/03/04/AB14tMq_story.html By Neely Tucker, Sunday, March 20, 11:42 AM When last we heard, Everybody's Favorite Meteorite was locked up in legal limbo. The oblong little rock from outer space lighted up the late afternoon sky across Washington on Jan. 18, 2010, and rocketed into a doctors' office in Lorton. Moving at a leisurely 200 mph, it crashed into examination room No. 2 in the Williamsburg Square Family Practice, even though it did not have an appointment. The startled (but unhurt) doctors, Marc Gallini and Frank Ciampi, donated it to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, which houses the world's largest collection of meteorites. But then their landlords said not so fast: The 2-by-3-inch visitor from the asteroid belt was estimated to be worth at least $50,000 on the earth-bound meteorite market, in part because of its dramatic and well-documented entrance. Thousands of people saw its fireball descent (the museum has a photograph of the vapor trail), and radar sweeps documented its path across the region. The landlords demanded its return. Gallini said of their behavior: It isn't nice. Legal wrangling ensued. We are delighted, a year later, that there is a happy ending. The landlords eventually dropped their claims, the Smithsonian gave the doctors $10,000 for the Lorton meteorite (its formal name) in early February, and the physicians donated the check to the charity Doctors Without Borders last week. Linda Welzenbach, the meteorite collection manager at the Smithsonian, says it will soon be on public display, though no date has been set. We are very happy that it's staying at the Smithsonian, Gallini says. We felt that where it's belonged since the beginning. Deniz Mutlu, a member of the family that owns the building, said his only issue with events was that we got portrayed as the bad guys. All we wanted to do was donate it to a different institution (Phillips Exeter Academy, in New Hampshire), where my wife attended school, he said. The doctors wanted to litigate. They had pro bono counsel. We just let it go. The meteorite, which existed for about 4.5 billion years floating around between Mars and Jupiter, now spends its time in a little plastic box deep in the Mason-Clarke Meteorite Vault in the Smithsonian. It has thousands of other little asteroid friends, including three from Mars, to keep it company. Holding the Lorton meteorite with blue latex gloves, Welzenbach smiled. It's going to stay here where everyone can see it. CURIOUS? Tell us what past Washington Post story or person in the news you want us to update. E-mail tre...@washpost.com or call 202.334.4208. Re: [meteorite-list] Oman prison saga
Hi Mike, Glad to have you guys back here safe and sound. I'm sorry you and Robert endured such torment. Hopefully this event will set some kind of positive precedent for the international meteorite world. It takes people like you and Robert to make it known to all what goes on behind the scenes. Your stay in hell was terrible, and not to be wished on any human being. Hopefully this event will pay great positive dividends for meteorites worldwide. And, even more important, the human rights violations that have occurred and continue to occur are being brought to light. Perhaps for a good reason at the right time. Welcome home Mike and Robert! Regards, Eric On 3/13/2011 8:36 PM, Michael Farmer wrote: 90% of the meteorite list is interested in the Oman meteorite saga that Robert Ward and Michael Farmer went through from our arrest in early January until our release ordered on March 7th 2011. This is my story, Robert can tell his, as it is a little different as we were separated, interrogated, and housed apart for more than half of the event. On December 31st we headed for Oman, my 20th meteorite hunting expedition there. I have studied the law there since the arrest of the Russian and American hunters back in 2005. There is no law against meteorite hunting in Oman, those who asked why we keep doing it, that is why. It is legal. After months of meeting with lawyers, looking at Oman law, I think we know what we are talking about. We had a very successful trip, I found 35 meteorites, 3 pieces of the Dhofar 1180 Lunar, more than 100 grams, and some other nice things. On the last day we headed out of the desert and towards Dubai. At 1 PM on 13 January we arrived at a police roadblock in Adam, nothing out of the norm, until they rushed my car with M16's and they had heavy belt-fed guns on their trucks. They forced us out of our cars and ripped them apart of course, finding the meteorites immediately. We were taken to the Adam police station and interrogated for 10 hours. The Wali (governor) of the area arrived and was very upset at our confinement, he kept apologizing to us and saying he did not understand why we were being arrested and kept calling Muscat to try and get us released, he was angry at tourists being detained in his district. He then informed that orders from much higher in the government came in that we were to be taken to Muscat and it was out of his hands. The roadblock was for us, they had intel that we were coming. I have intel on who did it.. We were driven to Muscat in shackles, arriving at midnight, taken to an interrogation center in Qurum. Stripped, put into separate rooms, and never saw each other again for the next 25 days except when the embassy came, our lawyers came, or we were taken to the hospital a couple of times. Qurum Criminal Investigation Division is little more than a torture chamber, we heard many times people being beaten, and dragged around. I was interrogated in a conference room after more than 72 hours without sleep. We were kept in small rooms, 9 x 9 x 12 ft, with small pad on the floor and two blankets, horribly filthy, crawling with roaches, and things on the floors and walls which I decline to try to describe. There were 4 rooms, Robert and I in two, and other people in the others, we could hear them crying or screaming sometimes. I tried to speak to Robert a couple of times just to see if he was there, and he would yell he was, then the police would come and threaten me not to speak again, this went on for 25 days and nights, 24 hours a day in that room, cold, a small light on 24/7 you never knew the time of day except when food would come. It was a nightmare that never seemed to end. I was close to losing it, never did, but my military training kicked in and helped with that. It was more than 48 hours since our arrest that I was interrogated, forced to sign a statement of guilt, then driven to a prosecutor's office at midnight on the 15th of Jan. No phone calls in that time, no chance to see lawyer or embassy despite endless pleas. I was charged with various crimes again with no chance to see lawyer beforehand. I begged the prosecutor for a call and he refused, then thankfully after he sent me out into a waiting room, another person handed me a cell phone quietly so I called my wife and in 20 seconds told her I was in jail in Muscat, and to call for help to the embassy,. It took a week for the embassy to find us. Oman violated many laws, they are required to provide lawyer before charges are filed, and contact embassy within 24 hours, neither done. After that, the endless days passed in hell, the toilet a hole in the ground and I will leave the rest to your imagination. We went to trial on 6 Feb, a 15 minute joke in Arabic with one question asked by the judge, who then sentenced us to 6 months in prison and a $250 fine for illegal mining operations. We were sent the next day to the Sumail

There is no denying that John Blennert warned Mike of the unfavorable situation in Oman (of which John would certainly know). So I, for one, am quite curious to understand the reason why Mike ultimately decided it was worth risking continued travels there. In his defense, Mike has been to Oman countless times without incident, so I can see why he might poo-poo Blennert's warnings. And if the Omani government was so focused on detaining/encarcerating Mike, how is it that they failed to do so on the many visits that occurred subsequent to John's warning? Hey Jason, you're forgetting something... ;) Time.4.56 billion years worth of it. The easily available rocks we don't collect didn't really originate here... The rocks from space we do collect are only interesting only because they've not yet been terrestrialized. NASA Science News March 1, 2011: Every day about 100 tons of meteoroids -- fragments of dust and gravel and sometimes even big rocks - enter the Earth's atmosphere. Stand out under the stars for more than a half an hour on a clear night and you'll likely see a few of the meteors produced by the onslaught. But where does all this stuff come from? Surprisingly, the answer is not well known. Now NASA is deploying a network of smart cameras across the United States to answer the question, 'What's Hitting Earth?' Did that meteor you saw blazing through the sky last night come from the asteroid belt? Was it created in a comet's death throes? Or was it a piece of space junk meeting a fiery demise? When I get to work each morning and power up my computer, there's an email waiting with answers, says William Cooke, head of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. And I don't have to lift a finger, except to click my mouse button. Groups of smart cameras in the new meteor network triangulate the fireballs' paths, and special software^1 uses the data to compute their orbits and email Cooke his morning message. If someone calls me and asks 'What was that?' I'll be able to tell them. We'll have a record of every big meteoroid that enters the atmosphere over the certain parts of the U.S. Nothing will burn up in those skies without me knowing about it! In other U.S. meteor networks, someone has to manually look at all the cameras' data and calculate the orbits - a painstaking process. With our network, our computers do it for us - and fast, says Cooke. The network's first three cameras, each about the size of a gumball machine, are already up and running. Cooke's team will soon have 15 cameras deployed east of the Mississippi River, with plans to expand nationwide^2 . Cooke is actively seeking schools, science centers, and planetaria willing to host his cameras. Criteria are listed in the notes at the end of this story. In addition to tracking fireballs and their orbits, Cooke's system gives him other valuable information. It provides data on meteor speed as a function of size - and this is critical to calibrating the models we use in designing spacecraft. Meteorite hunters will reap benefits too. By determining a bright fireball's trajectory through the atmosphere, the network's software can calculate whether it will plunge to Earth and pinpoint the impact location fairly precisely. And when we collect the meteorite chunks, we'll know their source. I could be holding a piece of Vesta in my hand.^3 It would be like a free sample return mission! Opportunities like that, however, will be rare. Most meteorites fall in the ocean, lakes, forests, farmer's fields, or the Antarctic, says Rhiannon Blaauw, who assists Cooke. And the majority of those meteorites will never be found. But our system will help us track down more of them. All cameras in the network send their fireball information to Cooke and to a public website, fireballs.ndc.nasa.gov. Teachers can

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Auction
I have to say, John, you have a point. Share the info publicly. Sure there will be those who don't understand the difference between wholesale and retail, and may want to buy at wholesale what is supposed to be retail. But if they think they'll get wholesale pricing on a single item purchase they need a fact checking lesson anyway. I say to hell with convention and release the info publicly! It was already broadcast LIVE anyway! lol Eric On 2/23/2011 7:38 PM, John.L.Cabassi wrote: G'Day Michael, List and All I'm a little perplexed over this statement. Not even with the buyers, but with the public that view this list? We're just adding to meteorite buyers / collectors being corrupt. We don't need to hide anything and we don't need to give those that frequent these pages fire power to say that we're not legit. I'm sorry, I disagree with this whole thing. Make it be known, make it be public. That's the only way we're going to move forward from being negative. That's just my thoughts and not anyone else's. [meteorite-list] Cometary Beauty
Astronomy Picture of the Day: Comet Tempel 1 from Stardust-NeXT Spacecraft No comet has ever been visited twice before. Therefore, the unprecedented pass of the Stardust-NeXT spacecraft near Comet Tempel 1 earlier this week gave humanity a unique opportunity to see how the nucleus of a comet changes over time. Changes in the nucleus of Comet Tempel 1 were of particular interest because the comet was hit with an impactor from the passing Deep Impact spacecraft in 2005. Pictured above is one digitally sharpened image of Comet Tempel 1 near the closest approach of Stardust-NeXT. Visible are many features imaged in 2005, including craters, ridges, and seemingly smoother areas. Few firm conclusions are yet available, but over the next few years astronomers who specialize in comets and the understanding the early Solar System will be poring over these images looking for new clues as to how Comet Tempel 1 is composed, how the 2005 impact site now appears, and how general features of the comet have evolved. http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110216.html __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Flyby Time. Happy Valentine NExT http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2011-050cid=release_2011-050msource=11050tr=yauid=7771872 --- NASA Spacecraft Hours From Comet Encounter February 14, 2011 Stardust-Next Mission Status PASADENA, Calif. -- As of today, Feb. 14, at 9:21 a.m. PST (12:21 p.m. EST), NASA's Stardust-NExT mission spacecraft is within a quarter-million miles (402,336 kilometers) of its quarry, comet Tempel 1, which it will fly by tonight. The spacecraft is cutting the distance with the comet at a rate of about 10.9 kilometers per second (6.77 miles per second or 24,000 mph). The flyby of Tempel 1 will give scientists an opportunity to look for changes on the comet's surface since it was visited by NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft in July 2005. Since then, Tempel 1 has completed one orbit of the sun, and scientists are looking forward to discovering any differences in the comet. The closest approach is expected tonight at approximately 8:40 p.m. PST (11:40 p.m. EST). During the encounter phase, the spacecraft will carry out many important milestones in short order and automatically, as the spacecraft is too far away to receive timely updates from Earth. These milestones include turning the spacecraft to point its protective shields between it and the anticipated direction from which cometary particles would approach. Another milestone will occur at about four minutes to closest approach, when the spacecraft will begin science imaging of the comet's nucleus. The nominal imaging sequence will run for about eight minutes. The spacecraft's onboard memory is limited to 72 high-resolution images, so the imaging will be most closely spaced around the time of closest approach for best-resolution coverage of Tempel 1's nucleus. At the time of closest encounter, the spacecraft is expected to be approximately 200 kilometers (124 miles) from the comet's nucleus. The mission team expects to begin receiving images on the ground starting at around midnight PST (3 a.m. on Feb. 15 EST). Transmission of each image will take about 15 minutes. It will take about 10 hours to complete the transmission of all images and science data aboard the spacecraft. Live coverage on NASA TV and via the Internet begins at 8:30 p.m. PST (11:30 p.m. EST) from mission control at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Coverage also will include segments from the Lockheed Martin Space System's mission support area in Denver. A post-flyby news conference is planned on Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. PST (1 p.m. EST). For NASA TV streaming video, scheduling and downlink information, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/ntv . The live coverage and news conference will also be carried on one of JPL's Ustream channels. During events, viewers can take part in a real-time chat and submit questions to the Stardust-NExT team at: http://www.ustream.tv/user/NASAJPL2 . During its 12 years in space, Stardust became the first spacecraft to collect samples of a comet (Wild 2 in 2004), which were delivered to Earth in 2006 for study. The Stardust-NExT mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver built the spacecraft and manages day-to-day mission operations. The incident happened before 12:45 p.m. ET, according to witnesses who called Fox 29. There are also reports on Twitter and Facebook about the incident. Fox 29 TV reporter Chris O'Connell also saw the object, which he described as majestic and beautiful, at about 12:35 p.m. as he was driving on I-95 near the airport. A Fox 29 viewer spotted the object at 12:36 p.m. in Delaware. There also have been several reports of similar occurrences today in Connecticut and New York. Meteorites are naturally occurring objects that originate in space and survive a fall through Earth's atmosphere. Most are remnants of asteroids or possibly comets. Re: [meteorite-list] Sponsored met adds in google search
Melanie, You're talking about Google Adwords. It's the advertising program that shows vendor ads (sponsored ads) in the right had column when you do a Google search. It's based on keywords, and/or keyword phrases, and what any vendor bids on those keywords. Some dealers may or may not be running their ads during the show, or may have cut back on their daily budget. MikeG is right, it could be economic. I think it's a combination... Vendors bid on keywords and Pays Per Click every time a user clicks the ad. It's rightly called PPC advertising, and how Google makes BILLIONS! Type in How to make money online in Google and you'll be bombarded with Adwords ads in the right hand column of most any browser. However type the single keyword chondrite and it shows nothing, or only 1 or 2 ads at random. This is because not many people/vendors are bidding on that keyword. Type in Meteorites for Sale and a few more results show up. The reason my Meteorites USA does not show any more in the Sponsored Ads column, is because I turned off my Adwords ads. ;) It's not cheap, and it was only pulling 25-100 visits per day. I get 5-10 times that traffic through organic search each day, so it's pointless for me to run my ads constantly unless I have a special promotion. Also, Tucson Show is going on right now. Meteorite dealers may have turned off their ads while they are at the show. Hope this helps... Regards, Eric On 2/3/2011 7:13 PM, Melanie Matthews wrote: It would be nice if when one punches in the key words: meteorite, chondrite, chondrule, achondrite, pallasite, Martian, Lunaite, etc...that a sponsored link (or links) would appear in the upper right of the page to online stores that sell mets such as Meteorites USA, Meteorite Market, and so forth.. Ruben, a Broadband connection through Verizon Wireless, or another carrier will work. There might be some lag, but the speeds are fast enough to stream low resolution audio/video. Bandwidth or data charges might apply depending on carriers. WiFi of course would be good but might not be reliable for streaming video, depends again on the strength of signal and speed of the connection. Then frozen meteorite is then shattered and it fragments along the crystal-plane boundaries of the taenite and kamacite - the result is these crystals with a polished appearance. This process works best with coarse octahedrites of lower value like Campo and Nantan. Some people like them, some people don't. I think they are a neat way to upcycle a lower grade piece into something more marketable, but they are also a bit misleading because newbies may tend to think iron meteorites naturally look that way. Forwarded to the list for Sean Murray Folks, Does anyone have experience taking a core sample from a chondrite for repository / classification. The purpose would be to preserve certain exterior characteristics by taking ~25 grams in a core and keep the 5gm crusted plug. Re: [meteorite-list] Huge Fireball: Possible First Meteorite Fall of 2011
UPDATE: I've added another map to the mess. ;) Don't really have time to do anything with this, those who can use it here it is. Marc Fries' radar data is plotted on the map, http://radarmeteorites.wordpress.com/2011/01/13/southern-ms-12-jan-11-0244-utc/ and I credit him for his work. Nice job! An interesting note is that I conducted 2 phone interviews with two eye witnesses a day or so before Marc posted his radar data. When I plotted their reports on the map, they roughly pointed in the same general area as the radar return with regard to their sighting direction and flight path of the fireball. The witness North of Pickens AR reported massive fragmentation, and the witness in MS stated they saw no fragmentation and that the fireball appeared to fall all the way to the ground. Not sure if 20 miles would make the difference between seeing the fragmentation or not, but the MS witness was 241 miles from Marc's radar return, whereas, the Pickens AR witness was 221 miles away. (this assuming the radar return is the bolide event) It's possible that the small differentiation between the distances from the fireball event and the curvature of the Earth allowed the AR witness to see the fragmentation, whereas the MS witness was unable to see it because their view was obscured by the horizon. A lot of things need to be considered like the altitude, the timing of the sighting, the height/altitude of each witness. Either way, it's interesting. Let me make this disclaimer. This is only a rough estimate based on compiled information, sonic boon reports, fireball sighting reports, radar, and phone interviews. Use this info at your own risk. Video is basically useless, and I've not yet plotted ANY video on this map. I've heard of some CNN video, and other video which actually shows the fireball in the air, but have only seen one. Anyone wanting to help let me know. I'll plot it when I get time. Enjoy... Happy Hunting! Hey Robert, a short duration Fireball doesn't really mean much with regard to whether meteorites are on the ground as evidenced by the Whetstone Mountains meteorite fall. The question on this one is whether there was fragmentation, and if there is video of that fragmentation. Fragmentation has been reported by many eye witnesses.
