Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson show
Hi Said, and all others doing the Show: I find it interesting and perplexing that you would not Bother to put yourself in the Meteorite Exchange Tucson Guide To Meteorite dealers and people! Instead, you post to this list - which, if everyone did, would Be utter mayham attempting to piece together a map of where Everyone would be at the Tucson Show. Paul Harris and Jim Tobin have, like so many other times, Donated their time, efforts and web space, at no expense to anyone else, to benefit all of us, put together a guide for the show. Everyone can put themselves in and everyone can then Print a copy and take it to the show to know where to go and where everyone is. Go here: http://www.meteorite-times.com/tucson/ Anyone NOT in the Meteorite Exchange Tucson Show guide Should add themselves NOW, or expect to loose business as a Result. Anyone going should print this guide and take it with them To know their rear end from their elbow. As so many other times, we owe a debt of gratitude for the Splendid efforts and genius of Paul and Jim. Thanks, guys! Re: [meteorite-list] AD
Hi All, I offer several SUPER offers, including 2 of the 3 most In Demand hammers: PEEKSKILL: Many super, ultra thin slices of one of the 3 most sought after hammers ever the Car Smasher and the most filmed of all bolides ever. (Fell on a Friday night and over a dozen parents were filming their sons' football games). SEE: http://aquarid.physics.uwo.ca/~pbrown/Videos/peekskill.htm The price on this keeps getting higher every time I buy new stock. Supply clearly will never match increasing demand. Many of these were so thin I had to put them in a 1.5 X 1.5 membrane box, then weigh the box and subtract the weight of an average box, so, weights on all of these is not exact. However, this is one of those purchased based on size of surface area and on that basis ALL of these are bargains: SEE ALL PHOTOS AT: http://entertainment.webshots.com/album/569594507bzxTfa?start=0 .828g = $225- FC .729g = $175- .336g = $85- .318g = $75- .310g = $75- .317g = $60- .293g = $50- .261g = $60- .193g = $40- .172g = $40- .164g = $60-FC .131g = $75- .115g = $40- Multi Frags = $25- SYLACAUGA! Also a hammer, its circumstances of impact are overshadowed by its contents of amino acids proving that life could possibly (probably) come to this planate via meteorites and/or comets. The price has climbed to the point that the usual price is $200/g and higher but not here: 32g whole specimen = $6,400- SALE = $3,200- ( only 100/g! don't hope to ever see it at this price again) LA CREOLLA: 556g Whole Stone. 95% Fusion Crusted $6,500- (under $11.75/g). Re: [meteorite-list] What makes a hammer a hammer?
Steve, Robert, Dave, Walter, Mike, John et al, Several comments: (I would have responded earlier, but I was watching The Chargers KICK ASS!) 1) Any information listed on my hammer page http://www.michaelbloodmeteorites.com/Hammers.html Regarding Sylacauga is more accurately expressed by (THE REAL) Steve Arnold. I stand corrected by him on All accounts regarding this specific hammer. 2) Walter Branch's original page can be seen at: http://imca.repetti.net/metinfo/metstruck.html His reference to HAMs he states, is a reference to humans, animals man made objects and is unrelated To my coining the term, Hammer in reference to any Fall that resulted in a stone striking one of the above. 3) Dave Geesling was essentially correct in stating that The word, HAMMER first appeared in a book by Niven and Pournelle, entitled, LUCIFER'S HAMMER, Fawcett Crest, 1977. (Ironically, in the book, this term is a misnomer, as the Astronomer who first views the object and predicts a Huge earth impact was named Hamner, and it was a religious figure that stated that Lucifer's Hammer Was going to punish the people of the earth (much like The gobledgook vomited by the religious that state that AIDS is a punishment by God for the sin of homosexuality. I read this book 10 or more years before I got into meteorites But my use of the term hammer was, in fact, inspired To a degree from this book. However, I thought long and hard About the term I wanted to use before deciding to use hammer. Since I was collecting them and determined to offer the largest Selection available of them, I felt a name was definitely called For and hammer it was. 4) When one coins a term, that person sets the parameters Of definition. Inevitably these parameters will change or Be refined over time. My use of the term Hammer was In reference to a meteorite that nailed something - specifically Human, animal or human made, just as was made reference to In Walter's work. Personally, I EXCLUDE roads and cultivars (varieties of hybridized fruit trees), though there are others who collect hammers that include them. 5) The entire fall is a Hammer fall and a specific individual that hit A specific object, animal or person is a Hammer stone (very, very Few irons)(the use of hammer stone was introduced by Adam Hupe. Though I originally debated his usage, conversations with him brought Me over to his side on this issue). Of course, one would always prefer THE hammer stone Of a fall or one of several For instance, I have 9 different Park Forest Hammers that include several houses, a car, a tow truck, A fire station, a baseball grandstand, fence, etc. However, in many cases The one or few hammer stones is not available (the guy in the boat Threw all that landed in his boat into the river, as they were clearly evil- Chiang-Khan) or the tiny Mbale stone that struck a boy I Have a photo of him holding it but no amount of research has resulted In finding ANYONE who can even say they have any idea of what Happened to that particular stone. As for Allende, Pultusk, Holbrook, etc, there is written documentation describing houses and patios, a train station being struck - I am working on a book that will cite a good deal of written records attesting to such events - the topic is far too extensive to include here. 6) I am amazed at the egocentric attitude of people who look down on others Who are into something that holds no interest for them. It would be like Me stating all NWA material is insignificant, regardless of rarity of type Because it is nearly all undocumented as to both date of impact and in The vast majority of cases, not reliably recorded as to specific location of find. While these statements may (or may not) have credibility, my personal Value system being applied is, relatively speaking, irrelevant. 7) Mike Gilmer asked why some falls were hardly ever referred to as hammers though they fit the description: Holbrook, Allende, etc. Yes, Mike, in those cases the fall, itself was so extensive and significant in Other ways that, though they included in any reasonable hammer collection, That is not their only claim to fame. 8) What percentage of meteorite collectors specifically collect hammers? This would be an excellent polling question for the list. If people want to Email me off list, I will count up the responses and report to the list. I believe the list currently has about 900 members (it is impossible to know Because a significant number of people use more than one email address To receive posts). Regardless, we could get some idea. From conversations I have had with collectors, my GUESS would be about 10 percent of all Collectors go out of their way to collect hammers (usually as ONE of their Interests in meteorites). However, a pole would be far more revealing, as Hammer collectors tend to contact me at a much higher rate than other Dealers, I am sure. When I opened my Hammer Page

Hi Dave, I am sure you are right. It has been like 30 years since I read the Book - EXCELLENT read - and that was before I was into meteorites, So, it held all kinds of fanciful stuff. I am sure major parts of the movies DEAP IMPACT and The one about the old grogers blowing up the Asteroid headed for earth were both influenced by this book. My favorite, of course, was the guy surfing the tidal wave Through downtown LA, dodging buildings as one must dodge Pier footings. Re: [meteorite-list] AD Encyclopedia-of-meteorites.com website for sale
Greetings Pierre and all, Pierre, I was concerned about your comment of hoping The new owner is not a meteorite dealer who would benefit From the web site personally in any way. Being a dealer puts one in a position to contribute to the meteoritic community and not just be some kind of blood sucking leach! In fact, most of the dealers I know are major contributors to the community some are truly outstanding in giving of their time energy, Such as Anne Black, Adam Hupe - all the dealers who have served On the IMCA board (that is a LOT of work, folks), Paul Harris Jim Tobin (Meteorite Times, Most of their Meteorite Exchange web Site), etc, etc. Of course there are many pure collectors who have also contributed plenty. The point is, any conscientious individual would be fine (I have No personal interest, myself). Just because someone makes money dealing meteorites does not mean they can't serve the meteoritic community as well. Most dealers do - some more than others. ALL of them have to make Money, as well, but these two things are in no way in conflict, even Though a few dealers have made their own beds that way. HAPPY NEW YEAR! The Tucson Meteorite Auction on-line catalog is now complete? It has 78 lots offered. For the first time, all of the original lots are NO MINIMUM BID. That means wide open bidding for everyone - ANY bid could win. See on-line auction catalog at: -- http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/AuctionTucson09.html -- People need to email in their absentee bids NOW. If you do not get a Confirmation within 24hrs, something went wrong - please email me again. Absentee bids will give you an excellent opportunity to buy as though you were at the auction, even from Europe. You offer your highest bid And are automatically bid up only with the live bidding, so, you could get it well below your maximum. There are still plenty of spaces for more entries, especially for $3K and up items, which are lacking so far, even though we have some really choice mid-range items. Remember we will be in the old location where the 4 auctions before The last location (in 2008) were held. Email in your absentee bids and any remaining entries. Re: [meteorite-list] Need a meteorite picture repository (was Alternative Meteorite Group Track Records)
Bob, I don't see the problem... There are many free photo sites - Upload your photo, get the URL, put the click-to URL into your Post to the list and there you are. Hundreds do it. The worst Case scenario is you have to copy/paste the URL to your browser. I like Webshots : http://www.webshots.com/ because of the Ease of use and the option to pay a little and expand your capacity, but there are dozens out there - just choose one (I will admit there is at least one list member that cannot seem To get this basic concept, talks about a photo we certainly should Be sure to see - and leaves the URL out of his posts Concluding with ...Enjoy! - enjoy WHAT?) Other than that, how easy can it get, Bob? These sites are Out there - pick one, use it, post to the list. Best wishes, Michael on 12/26/08 8:14 AM, Bob Loeffler at b...@peaktopeak.com wrote: Hi all, I'm not posting this to MikeG's chat group discussion because my idea is not the focus of that discussion. I see only one thing missing from this Meteorite list: A picture repository for list members who don't have websites. We can have all of the meteorite-related discussions that we so desire on this list, but if a member wants to show us pictures of his meteorites, he/she has to use a service like Flickr if he/she doesn't have his/her own website. Flickr and some of the others are nice for general use, but then we have pictures strewn about all over the web and it's impossible to search for them. Not easy for new members (or old members) to view them. What I would like to see is a meteor/meteorite picture storage site that is easy to navigate and easy for people to post their pictures to. It would need to be moderated (e.g. someone posts a picture and caption, then the moderator would need to OK it before it is viewable by everyone) and you would need to be a member of the website (free, of course, but donations would be good) to be able to post (so it would cut down on spammer posts). The moderator would then prevent the few spammer posts to be uploaded. Each member would get his/her own folder (or album) to post pictures into. And maybe they could create more folders within their main folder. It would need to be searchable (e.g. I want to see all Sikhote Alin meteorites). Anyone could become a member, even dealers who already have a website, because they might want to share their personal collection with everyone else without putting it on their dealer website. There would be no advertising on this, but you could add your website URL to the caption of a picture if you want people to be able to easily find your website. There would be NO discussion on the website since we already have a place for that. :-) Just pictures and their captions. It should be able to have it's own website domain name (e.g. www.met-list-meteorites.com). I volunteer to pay the yearly domain name fee if others would share the monthly web hosting fee (I could help with that, too) and the daily work. I am too stretched on other volunteer work, so I can't do much of the daily moderation (which of course could be done every couple of days instead of daily). Is there any website system out there that can do this already? Or is there anyone who could make one? Thanks and Happy Holidays! Re: [meteorite-list] meteorite blooper of the year
Hi Bob, The term slab is almost never used for meteorites. Instead, It is slice, part slice full slice OR end piece (any slice or hunk Of meteorite with one cut face only is an end piece). Usually, slab is qualified with a full slice forming a giant Slab or a flat end piece forming a slab type of thing; but mostly slab is very rarely used as a meteorite term - and then, always In the context of a HUGE full slice - such as a giant slab Of Esquel (large enough to be a coffee table). In short, it is a vague term and a slice or end piece with Dimensions are much more definitive terms. Hi Jerry all, That is a fair price, but not a particularly good price. ($10 to $12/g for 5 to 7 gram pieces, good quality) List member Michael Gilmer is offering a VERY good Price, but his pieces are only up to 2 or 3 grams - but MUCH Cheaper. ($3 to $5/g??? - contact him for quote at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]) That is a VERY good price - but Only small pieces (prices go up quickly with size). I have some large pieces (10 to 16g) @ $10/g. So, if you want small, Michael Gilmer is the best price by Far. If you want size, mine are the best I am aware of (doesn't Mean there aren't large ones at a better price somewhere). While If you want medium sized, they guy you mention is a fair price. It depends on the size you are after and the total you are willing To spend. Re: [meteorite-list] No wonder Bonhams was a bust
Hi Mike and all, So far there are no minimum bids on ANY of the entries in The 10th annual Tucson Meteorite Auction. Thanks to Anne Black, there are now about 50 items and I Think another source is providing an additional 20 or so items. So, even though listings are behind schedule, all photos should be Up within the next 24 hrs or so and absentee bids are encouraged. I have decided to drop absentee bidding fees to the lowest level Possible, so, if you can't make it to the Show you can still bid on The items. No minimum means NO minimum - there will not be Any pulling of an item because of lack of interest or no heat. You never know what bid might win and it doesn't cost you anything To place absentee bids that do not win the bid. Check it all out here: http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/AuctionTucson09.html Best wishes, Michael on 12/8/08 7:26 AM, Michael Gilmer at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: No, buyers' premium was 20% and California sales tax (without a resale number) is 8%. ...So add 28% Jason There you have your answer, in part. Add 28% means subtract 50% of the potential bidders, including me. I watched that auction, and was scared away from bidding by the man in a black ski-mask and a Bonham's jacket on. Call me naive, but tacking on an extra 30% after the gavel (almost) is highway robbery. And I thought eBay fees were ridiculous. I guess I'll never bid on a Bonham's auction. No offense to Mike or any of the other sellers who got hosed, but you couldn't put a gun to my head and make me give my stuff away like that and then pay through the wazoo to do it. No thanks. Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Meteorite Auction Ad
Greetings all, While I am looking foreword to seeing everyone in Tucson I must admit that with the combination of increased overhead and a HUGE lack of response to requests for entries in the auction, it is entirely possible this will be the final Tucson Meteorite Auction. Perhaps it has run its course. Personally, I hope not. While it is A LOT of work, it is, at least for me, a LOT of fun - and it has Always seemed to be a lot of fun for all who attend. HOWEVER: Deadline for minimum commission entries is in two days And I have 7 entries (usually, by this time I have 70 or 80). I Have to sell about $25K worth of specimens just to brake even, so, this is looking dismal as the sponsor of the event. It is always Possible tons of entries will come in at graduated fee rates as The event grows nearer and nearer, but that has never been the Case in the past. At least 75% of the items tend to be in and up in the on line catalog by now. Now, this will still make for an exciting auction, as there Will undoubtedly be at least a few more entries and, most important To the bidders, there will be plenty of room to allow for all the late entries, many of which I have turned down in the past and most of which turn out to be large whole Stones Irons with no minimum - so, buyers will have a field day. Also, Jerry Armstrong's lecture should be very meaningful - so Much so that I am hoping to have him audio tape it for me so I Don't miss it, myself. So, while THIS auction will go on, it is Looking like it will be a large financial loss which I can take only Once. If so, then, of course, this will be the 10th and the final. Not to worry if you are a buyer, as you will have a ball, no doubt: Jerry's lecture, Twink's Gold Bason Birthday Cake, food and Open bar with a hundred or more meteorite buddies tends to Make for a great time. I suppose it is entirely possible people are going to flood me With entries of high quality with no minimums over the next few Weeks or so, but I am not holding my breath. On the other hand, People seeing how few entries there are may realize their piece(s) Will be in higher demand, so, feel more inclined to enter specimens. Those that are thinking of submitting can still get the lowest Possible fee by submitting a list of the entries in the next 48 hrs Even if they have yet to take digital photos - I will extend the Deadline for photos on a person by person basis. Please submit high quality pieces only, as $10 and $20 items Are not going to keep the doors open. If you enter 10 or 20 items, some at the low end are fine, of course. I hope I am wrong and have a flood of work over the next Couple of weeks. Best wishes, Michael Save huge $ on gas mileage: http://go4best.water4gas.hop.clickbank.net/ Info on Govnt. Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Show Schedule
Hi All, Someone contacted me off list re the specific schedule of the Tucson Gem Mineral Show. I Wrote him back, then realized there may be a bunch Of listees who would like the same info. Also, remember That Meteorite Exchange will be prosting their famous Show Guide closser to the event - that will tell you Exactly WHERE each and every dealer will be. For now, here is the schedule as far as the meteorite Part of it goes: -- BIRTHDAY BASH : Fri, Feb. 6 - usually about 8PM? TUCSON METEORITE AUCTION : Sat, Feb. 7 Jerry Armstrong lecture at 6 PM, Bidding starts at 7:30PM -- Dealers start trickling in on the weekend preceding the 7th and are mostly all there by Sunday - this year will be Like Sunday, Feb 1 - most try to open by Sat (this year, Sat, Jan 31) but some won't get unpacked until Monday (Feb 2) Many meteorite dealers start packing up to leave by Wed following The weekend of the Birthday Bash Meteorite Auction (this year, That will be Wed, Feb. 11) and all will leave no later than Sunday the following weekend after the BD Bash and Met. Auction (this year, Sun, Feb. 15) So, as you can see, there is NOT a simple answer. The weekend Of the Birthday Bash and the Meteorite Auction is the only weekend ALL meteorite dealers are there, set up and open. (This year, that is Fri, Feb 6 Sat, Feb 7). The weekend before after consists Of most, but all not there and in various stages of unloading or packing To leave and many not really open some of those days. If you want to Spend a whole week with the most meteorite dealers present you are best off from any seven days around and including Feb 6 7. I HOPE this answers your question. As I said, there is no clear Cut start date and the end date IS Sunday, Feb 15 this year - but Many dealers will have left prior to the official end date. NO other country did it to us. We have been electing the same old people year after year to do the same thing year after year. Look at Iowa. Senator Harkin is going to get reelected and go back to Washigton and vote for the same things he has for the last 30 years. No change. He voted for NAFTA. All he votes for is to spend money on things that the tax payer ends up paying for. Lenny - - -- Yahoo! Re: [meteorite-list] TUCSON AUCTION, 2009
Greetings all, There were some real problems securing a space for the Tucson Show Meteorite Auction; the place on Craycroft was sold After Checking around, it turned out the OLD VFW Post on Beverly did NOT sell (which is why I had switched), so, in 2009 we will be back at the Location we were for about 5 years running on Beverly just off Speedway. Full directions will be provided in a new page going up on my site VERY Soon - probably later today. The date will be Sat, Feb. 7 Jerry Armstrong will be lecturing in the space used a few years back By U of A and his lecture (NOT about painting) is going to be something people will not want to Miss. Jerry is also planning to bring NEW paintings to Tucson this year! These will be originals - paintings not commissioned but for sale - and there may even be one in the auction. He will also be bringing a variety of his high quality Giclees, as well. CALL FOR ENTRIES: People submitting auction specimens (via good JPG and basic description - Name, type, weight, dimensions, etc) before Nov. 15 will STILL get the exceptionally low consignment fee of 10% of the price of the sale My goal is to have a 100 item On Line Catalog up as quickly as possible. After Nov. 15 consignment fees will increase incrementally. Of course, the Birthday Bash is the preview of Geoff Notkin and Steve Arnold (the real Steve Arnold, not Chicago Steve), but I have Spoken with Geoff and the Bash will be held Fri, Feb. 6 - Geoff will Later announce the location. Any questions, please feel free to contact me off list - unless you Feel the question is one to which other list members may want the answer. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites that can't get any, Casper the frendly theif, and a deeply stupid article
Interesting... Anyone know who is David Serchuk? Is he Just some writer who peeked into the meteorite Market long enough to gather a few facts and Then jump to conclusions? While I agree with many of his statements, His never to return again hypothesis regarding The height of meteorite prices in the late '90s is not just questionable, but almost certainly wrong. For one, the number of high roller fossil collectors and comic book fanatics may increase Only slowly over time, but meteorite collecting is An arena that could explode to many times its Current level in a relatively short period of time - And the group of collectors today is so extraordinarily Small that it could grow to sever hundreds of times Its size in a sprint of only a few years .. and then continue to grow. So, his conclusion of prices having peeked to A level never to be seen again is nothing short of absurd. Other thoughts? Michael on 10/22/08 9:37 AM, Darren Garrison at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: http://www.forbes.com/markets/2008/10/21/comic-book-bubbles-markets-bubbles08- cx_ds_1021tiny.html Tyrannosaurs And Superheroes David Serchuk, 10.21.08, 6:00 PM ET The meteorite market has crashed to Earth, and will never reach the heights again. In the late 1990s, during the great meteorite bubble, a gram of material from the Martian Zagami meteorite could go for $2,000. Today it fetches $200. The Christy's auction house sold a tenth of a gram of lunar rock for several hundred thousand dollars. Today lunar material fetches $400 a gram. What happened? What always seems to happen in a bubble: Demand lead to speculative hoarding, which lead to oversupply, which lead to a crash. The meteorite craze started in 1997, when European prospectors in the Sahara found meteorites that, due to the dry climate, were practically virgin. At first, the stones traded among just a few hands, but soon mania spread. Before long, it began to display the usual signs of a bubble, including people sitting on collections instead of selling them. That lead to what was once inconceivable: a meteorite glut. By 2001 everybody and their grandmother was in the Sahara, says meteorite dealer and appraiser Michael Casper. Nomadic tribesmen started dealing the rocks, and over a million grams of once scarce material flooded the market. That same year the craze imploded, and it hasn't returned. In Pictures: Tiny Bubbles From Baseball Cards To Beanie Babies A similar bubble occurred at roughly the same time in the fossil market. Through the late '90s, animal fossils appreciated in price, fueled by novelty and the plentiful money coming out of the tech bubble. The signal event of this craze was Sotheby's (nyse: BID - news - people ) 1997 sale of renowned T. rex skeleton Sue for $8.4 million. It was a surprising peak, says Peter Larson, paleontologist and president of the Black Hills Institute. It brought eight times more than I thought. Fossil-mania ran wild. Hollywood players like Nicholas Cage, Ron Howard and Leonardo DiCaprio maintained collections. Another T. rex, named Barnum, was bought by a team of investors who paid over $1 million dollars, hoping to flip the fossil. It eventually sold in 2006, for just $190,000. The bubble began to deflate when would-be flippers realized that fossil-hunting wasn't easy labor. So much work and expertise needs to go into this, says Larson. It's not the same thing as picking up a meteorite, or a coin. Most of the price (for a fossil) is in the labor. Unlike in the meteorite crash, the higher end of the fossil world has held value, even if it's not commanding the prices of the bubble's peak. People still want to put their money into something real that will maintain its value, says Larson. Rice, corn and trilobites will always have some value. One of the hallmarks of a bubble is that dealers find many different ways to market and resell a single product. Take the comic book boom that started in the mid-1980s. Comic book publishers would come to produce variant covers of the same issue, inciting collectors to buy the same product multiple times. Collectors then hoarded the books, ensuring a glut. Much like repackaged mortgages, buyers found that a different cover on the same product was no indication of safety, quality or long-term desirability. Throughout the late '80s, and into the early '90s, the bubble grew higher, says Joseph Koch, a partner in New York City-based comic book store Forbidden Planet. There were far too many books for too few customers, he says. Dealers would buy cases of comic books for $2000, and only sell a few of the comics, holding onto the rest in hopes they'd go up in value. Like over-leveraged banks, dealers even went into hock with their distributors to buy more cases. Eventually it all backfired. Things came to a head during what is known in the comics biz as Black April, in

Re: [meteorite-list] Kevin Kichinka's report - The Economy and the Price of Meteorites - Do You Really Want to Know?
Hi all, You can read a review of Kevin's report (mentioned below) in my column in the current METEORITE TIMES or directly via: http://www.michaelbloodmeteorites.com/MMT.html Best wishes, Michael on 10/12/08 7:52 PM, Kevin Kichinka at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: There's a thread today concerning meteorite prices, the economy and the present meteorite market. In September I offered here my Global Meteorite Price Report - 2008. I've sold quite a few, they've gone out to people in twenty-seven different countries, and many were to collectors who purchased the first report in February, 2007. I assume that means that they found the report useful or they wouldn't have purchased it again. A few dealers have also purchased and/or re-purchased the report, and these are people who I consider to be very serious about selling meteorites. They probably would prefer that you DON'T KNOW the price of meteorites. As for the rest of those dealing mets, if you don't know what the competition is asking for a meteorite, there's a good chance you are too high (and losing sales), or to low (and losing money.) Realistically, few dealers have the time to keep up with the price trend of every rock in their inventory. I offer here that service. Quite frankly, the meteorite market is so confused, and always has been, endless opportunities exist for collectors to locate and purchase bargain material of all kinds. In the process of compiling and creating this report, I located historic falls, Mars and rare lithologies that were grossly under priced. Wouldn't you want to know about this? I trade stocks these days, and I need all the information I can harvest. In equities and bonds, there are endless sources. For today's meteorite prices, I humbly assert that I am your only qualified, unbiased, experienced source. No one else is doing what I have done, and it is a massive project sold inexpensively to benefit all. Additionally, ten percent goes toward my charitable donation to astronomers in La Paz, Bolivia. Here's the advertisement I submitted a couple of weeks ago. The Global Meteorite Price Report - 2008 might be the best $11 you spend this month. - K ** Dear List Members: Every year since 1995 I have prepared a report to estimate the value of each meteorite in my collection. This is done by painstakingly visiting every legitimate dealer website. The results of these surveys have become a true snapshot of each year's market prices. Last year, I realized that this type of information might interest other collectors and dealers. After adding value by identifying and interpreting price trends, I shared the data by selling it inexpensively on the Internet. The 2007 Global Meteorite Price Report was limited to the eight-five meteorites within my collection, but was instantly popular and the feedback I received was very supportive. This year, to better serve the meteorite community I have expanded the report to include many other popular meteorites beyond those held in my personal collection. There are now 121 different meteorites (plus a few of their permutations). I would have included more, but at least one hundred historic or well-known meteorites that were on my search list are not currently being offered for sale rare birds indeed. This fourteen-page document contains three years worth of price data, July, 2005, February, 2007 and September, 2008, so that price trends among the meteorites you own can be identified. Actually, I do it for you. My methodology is explained, and following the price list comparisons, there is my State of the Market Report with Market News, Impact of Dealer Competition, Individual Meteorites of Note and I introduce a new concept to meteorites called Tiered Pricing. Breaking up the prose are many color photos of meteorites and related items never or rarely seen before and select meteorite microscopy works by the vanguard in this field, Tom Phillips. But there's more. Did you ever wonder if you shared first names with a meteorite? As a fun addition, I have included a two-page list of meteorite names compiled from Monica Grady's latest version of The Catalogue of Meteorites that are also people names. Anyone named Mike in the audience? You have a meteorite. Anyone owning my book (see www.theartofcollectingmeteorites.com) that enjoys my writing style will want this report. Anyone trying to understand the effects of the world's slowing economy on their collection's value will want this report. Re: [meteorite-list] Tangible assets
Hi again, ALL investments are iffy - with one And only one exception: gold. Gold is the oldest currency throughout History of most cultures. In fact, money generally Has no meaning whatsoever except as it relates to Gold - how much gold will a dollar/peso/yen/ruple/pound, etc Buy? The bottom line is, gold, itself, never changes value - Currencies change value in relationship to gold. That being said, I would never, ever buy gold during A depression or even a recession. The time to buy gold is When the value of the dollar (or whatever currency) is strong (relative to gold). Then sell it when the nit wits Panic and the price of gold is through the ceiling. (of Course, ideally, one has enough $ to always keep about 20% of all one's wealth in gold in case the whole damned Racket goes to hell. However, as we can now see around the world, the world's governments are just going to print more Monopoly money until solvency is reached. These days, gold is not used exclusively, rather a cartel of bankers daily decide What each currency is worth relative to each of the other World currencies for that day. Weird. Tricky Dicky (Nixon For you younger readers) was key in propelling this system To its current level when he stopped backing US dollars with Gold. Terribly ironic is the fact that that may now serve to Keep this all from turning into Mad Max. It is their monopoly game, so, they will just make sure it all keeps going. A depression doesn't make anyone richer - even the filthy rich and titans of the oil industries (who have more sway than any country). They now play a role as powerful As the Church from the Dark Ages well into the age of Exploration. Likewise, now is a TERRIBLE time to sell most stocks. Now is the time to BUY most stock - when it is cheap. A great Many millionaires made their money doing just that. I have a friend that has hundreds of millions of dollars Of Microsoft Shares. Many years back one of his son's called Him and said, Gee, dad, I am really sorry about how much You lost last week. He said, What are you talking about? And his son told him his stock had fallen 195 million dollars The previous week. He responded, Son, I didn't loose one penny. You only loose if you sell when the stock is down. I am not worried, It will be back up whether it is a few weeks, a few months or a Few years doesn't matter. I have no intention of selling when it Is down. Interesting lesson I learned that day. Anyway, just a couple of points of interest. Best wishes, Michael on 10/12/08 10:48 PM, bill kies at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I don't see meteorites as a tangible asset. Tangible of course. Well, OK then: No one seems to be interacting with the list, but Here goes I ordered a bunch of a meteorite originally named Mali, then called Erg Chech and now officially called Chergach. Fell in the summer of 2007 in Chergach, Erg Chech in the Timbuktu district of the Republic of Mali. The material on the market is prized due to being a witnessed fall and having rich black fusion crust with a fresh, white interior showing in broken sections. I originally paid $5/g for a lot wholesale, though I have seen it offered for $4/g. I have a very nice shipment that just arrived and I am offering the 5 remaining pieces for $2.25/g for specimens with nearly100% FC and $2/g for specimens with a broken side. I do not believe anyone will ever see this material again for these prices and I will be offering it (if any don't sell) in my catalog at a considerably higher price. So, list members now have a very rare chance to get a nice, big, fresh stone for your collection at the price you now have to pay for highly weathered, unidentified NWA material. (PS: Some of the cut slices and end pieces of this material have shown distinct impact melt brecciation, though none of this material has any cut surfaces, so, I have no idea what a cut section would be like). When ordering, I suggest you name at least ONE alternate, as I suspect these will go very quickly at this price: SEE SPECIMENS AT: http://community.webshots.com/photo/2293914970035542431qhFDNZ Specimens Nearly 100% FC ($2.25/g SALE) 257g = SALE =576- 500g = SOLD 1,077g = SALE =2,425- (Great regmaglypting) Specimens with broken side ($2/g SALE) 117g = SALE = 230- 300g = SOLD 338g = SALE = 675- 708g = SALE = 1,416- if you can't see the photos at: http://community.webshots.com/photo/2293914970035542431qhFDNZ and are interested, email me off list and I will send you an attachment. Hi Paul, VERY cool! However, I do know that I had NO photos in my first website and the one below has a photo of the MBC-10 AND the famous Tobin Polarascope Adaptor which came much later. (Unfortunately, These are no longer available as Jim can't get a supply of linear Polar lenses - they are all now circular). Still, yoiur memory is undoubtedly better than mine which I lost to Mad Cow (Denny Crain) years ago. I remember that crazy tick-tock exclamation point! Too cool. Re: [meteorite-list] Zuhua Sale
Greetings all, As most of you know, the latest Hammer slammed through the roof of a house in Zunhua, China on April 12, 2008. This material has been very hard to get and prices have soared in China. I have some stuff I got early enough to offer it to list members at prices you can not even get it for in China any more! I have just cut it, so part slices are now available. However, there is also a minor tail of woe: I have a web site provider (with whom I am not happy) - I was already paying $250/yr to get aprox. 2% of what I have found out I can get for under $120 per year. He has, for the second time cheezed out of yet, another $30, (for using too much bandwidth though, as I said, it is about a fiftieth of the normal bandwidth one gets for half the price) having charged an additional $30 only a few weeks ago, and then didn't even give me enough time to PayPal him and he has shut down my web site! It should be up soon (tomorrow?) but then, again, it should never have been down. I will soon have a decent provider - but will be able to retain the same URLs. In the mean time, You all can see my newly cut Zunhua at: http://community.webshots.com/album/564687274 I am offering a wide selection of Zunhua from $175/g to about $200/g depending on size and FC - in sizes ranging from .308g to 11.660g. Each specimen will arrive in a labeled membrane box ready for display - They are as follows: Photo 1: 11.660g - 2.5mm thin - about as thin as this material can be cut for this sized specimen = $2,000- Photo 2: 5.971g = $1,045- 3.891g (HUGE chondrule at the top of the part slice) = $680- 4.625g (Fusion crusted edge - very thin) = $945- 2.539g = $445- 2.682g = $470- Photo 3: 4.028g VERY THIN = $800- 1.343g - thin = $265- .308g - one side fusion crusted = $75- Photo 4: .429g nice partslice = $170- http://community.webshots.com/album/564687274 Thanks, Michael __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] More on Mitchell's Aliens
Darren and all, While there can be little doubt that the brobe routine is the modern era's version of Incubi and Sucubi, various reports have Preceded Mitchell's comments (and remember, all the astronauts Were the most highly screened group for sanity and overall neurosis free group that may ever have existed). My mother worked on a Navy base for 22 years and an officer She knew well and considered totally sane swore he knew for a fact That there were 2 alien bodies and one survivor who lived a couple of months after the Roswell event. Anyway Once again. Is this really list material - I guess MAYBE so in a very abstract manor. I just do not find it easy to totally disregard the very calmly Spoken word of an astronaut just because our current Paradigm Prohibits faster than light travel. I remember reading several years ago that MIT researchers Had discovered sub-atomic particles that appeared to move faster Than the speed of light and when they encouraged other researchers Around the globe to repeat their tests those researchers also discovered Sub-atomic particles that appeared to move faster than the speed of Light. I remember someone said (Carl Sagan?) that any technology sufficiently advanced from a given culture would appear to that culture's Members to be magic. I am not advocating yes or no on the alien issue, but I do find it interesting that so many people would dismiss any thought of aliens out of hand. But people always amaze me the way they dismiss any evidence that does not fit their own map of reality. This makes it very difficult, of course, to adapt to new data. But if this guy is talking about the purile drivel that is the lore of the UFO believers today-- including the aliens being humans with trivial morphological differences, who go around kidnapping people and sticking objects in their anuses, mutulating cattle, buzzing aircraft, and making crop circles, well, that means he is firmly a nut. Not because the details of the stories are too bizzare, but because they are too prosaic-- the very-slightly-alien aliens with their very-slightly-alien activities seem to be the imaginings of poorly-educated hicks and rednecks with limited imaginations-- and probably are. __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car. __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Today I offer a unique auction for list members. I have a large, oriented NWA meteorite (Partially identified by Ted Bunch as a common chondrite - it had been sold to me as an Enstatite, but I knew that was unlikely at the time, but figured it was worth more than the asking price, regardless. I will accept bids over 13c/g starting now and ending Monday at Midnight PDT. This is a terrific price as at the last Tucson Show the African dealers were asking $1/g for anything approaching a whole stone - and those had more of a desert varnish than FC. This piece weighs 4,600g and is clearly oriented. It has a fully Fusion Crusted top and sides and a flat bottom that is coated with what I would swear is that red caliche on the bottoms Of Millbillilli and Camel Donga - but of course, it is not Australian. Re: [meteorite-list] Fwd: How many meteorite dealers are there?
Hi Norbert and all, In terms of the survey I conducted a few years ago with list Members, whether or not someone was a meteorite dealer Was left up to them - and there were a LOT of people who Reported themselves as meteorite dealers. I, personally, would consider having a meteorite web site Or a meteorite mailing list to be minimal as qualifying as a Meteorite dealer. Selling your upgraded collection pieces on Ebay occasionally would not cut it - however, if you sell meteorites On eBay on an ongoing basis, week after week, that would definitely Constitute a dealer and is exactly what Dean Bessey did for a very Long time before having a web site. HOWEVER, again, this topic (what constitutes a meteorite dealer) Can be found in the list archives and was discussed for days involving Many dozens if not hundreds of posts on the question. Best wishes, Michael on 7/9/08 4:54 PM, Norbert Classen at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Alex, and All, A very good question, and I believe there's an answer to that. But let's start by asking some more questions: If you sell a T-shirt or a pair of Jeans on eBay from time to time, does this make you a commercial dealer, or even part of the textil business/industry? If you sell a used book once in a while, does this make you a book seller? Surely not. If you have a registered business for selling meteorites (or minerals) you might consider yourself a commercial seller (dealer), if you don't you are probably no dealer, but just a private person/collector who sells a rock/meteorite sample once in a while. So, do you have a commercial eBay account, or a private account? It's that simple. I don't know for other countries, but in Germany there's a clear distinction (set by the tax authorities): if you are making a profit with it you have a business and you are considered to be a Händler (commercial seller). If you are spending more on a hobby than you earn with your related sales you are considered a Liebhaber (hobbyist), and they won't even tax your related income because you are making zero profit with your once in a while sales. So I guess some people need to re-consider the real meaning of the word dealer in a social and economical context. If we are talking of commercial sellers, and people who make a real profit by selling meteorites there are probaly not as many meteorite dealers as you might think. Just my two cents, Norbert -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Can you tell the MeteoriteMan is a dealer or the collector is the MeteoriteMan? Is there a borderline? Exactly this is what I called into question! :-) Any suggestions for a definition of dealer? Alex Berlin/Germany ...who thinks there are more than those mentioned dealers on that list, but then again, where is the borderline, in terms of, may be, common sense and understanding? Re: [meteorite-list] The wonderful wizards of Osmium CHICXULUB I
Hi Sterling and all, I saw an educational video that stated they had discovered An impact crater (based on shocked quartz - shattercones) That was 500 MILES in diameter. Michael on 4/10/08 4:35 PM, Sterling K. Webb at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, List, There's a little bit of straw-manning going on here (caution: science journalism at work -- theirs not mine). They say the accepted size estimate of the Chicxulub impactor is 15 km to 19 km. That's wrong. The most commonly accepted estimate is 10 km (although some favor 12 or 13 km). Their size estimate is based on the idea that all the osmium they found was ALL the osmium from the impactor. I doubt that the transport mechanism from impactor to ocean muck was 100% efficient. Two-thirds of the planet is ocean, one third land. If what what they found in the muck was two-thirds of the osmium? The impactor would be 5 km across instead of 4.4 km, not an astounding increase. All we know from the Chicxulub crater is the kinetic energy of the impact: not the size, not the speed, but the product of the two: mass times ( speed squared ). The Bang at Chicxulub was 100 TeraTons of TNT. (That's 500 Zetta- Joules, zetta being 10^21), or 100,000,000 MegaTons of TNT! A 5 km impactor weighs 1/8th of what a 10 km impactor of the same material would and so it would have to go 2.8 times faster when it hit (2.8 squared = 8). Interestingly, while we know the energy well, estimates of velocity are a little shy. Those that offer up big impactors keep the speed down and those that talk of smaller impactors boost the speed estimate appropriately. But if a 5 km stoney impactor did all that damage, we are talking about velocities in the neighborhood of 35 to 45 km/sec. A highly eccentric orbit is required to achieve those kinds of encounter velocities with the Earth. The most recent theory (I like it) of where the Chicxuluber came from is the breakup of the parent body of the Baptistina family of asteroids about 160 million years ago (the biggest survivor of which is 298 Baptistina). The high encounter velocity also encourages proponents of the comet impact theory. True, the press release says: chemical traces of the impactors left behind in rocks... suggest otherwise, but you can forget that. The traces are of a carbonaceous chondrite, a likely composition for a comet, which is afterall just an asteroid with extra frosting. Sterling K. Scientists would love to have a better record of asteroid and comet impacts to understand how these catastrophic events have affected life and Earth's climate. But most impactors that made it through the atmosphere either gouged out a crater that was subsequently erased or splashed into the ocean. Now, scientists have developed a new tool to uncover these events, based on concentrations of the metal osmium found in mud at the bottom of the ocean. The technique was developed by François Paquay of the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, US, and his colleagues. Osmium atoms come in two varieties, or isotopes, one of which is slightly heavier than the other. Crucially, the osmium in meteorites is much richer in the lighter form than the stuff native to Earth. As a result, scientists can determine how much of the otherworldly stuff is present in any given deposit of the metal they find. Paquay's team has been looking for the metal in samples of ocean sediment obtained by drilling into the ocean floor. The sediment was laid down in layers over time, allowing scientists to date when they were deposited. Multiple strikes In 1995, members of Paquay's team pointed out high levels of the lighter osmium isotope - associated with extraterrestrial material - in ocean sediment laid down around the time of the impact that killed off the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Since then, they have found another big spike in extraterrestrial osmium laid down at the time of another known impact event that happened 35 million years ago. At that time, multiple impacts shook the Earth in what is known as the Late Eocene impacts. The team estimates that 80,000 tonnes of osmium from the object that wiped out the dinosaurs was vaporised by the heat of the impact. It then dissolved into seawater

Well, Not EXACTLY: In the US, the Enlish word, Value is most often translated To mean what is the dollar amount someone will pay (the Free Enterprise system is based on what Anthropologists refer to as negative exchange - each side is attempting to get the better Deal in an interaction). In such a system, DOLLAR value is strictly What one will pay. However, we often forget that true value is the importance We, ourselves place on an item, relationship, etc. Personally, I am staggered at the cost of even modestly status Cars and women's shoes. I certainly do not value them like many, Many others. The point is, everything has a value ONLY in the eye of the Beholder - a market is when many have a similar eye regarding Given items.
