Hi Said, and all others doing the Show: I find it interesting and perplexing that you would not Bother to put yourself in the Meteorite Exchange Tucson Guide To Meteorite dealers and people! Instead, you post to this list - which, if everyone did, would Be utter mayham attempting to piece together a map of where Everyone would be at the Tucson Show. Paul Harris and Jim Tobin have, like so many other times, Donated their time, efforts and web space, at no expense to anyone else, to benefit all of us, put together a guide for the show. Everyone can put themselves in and everyone can then Print a copy and take it to the show to know where to go and where everyone is. Hi Dave, I am sure you are right. It has been like 30 years since I read the Book - EXCELLENT read - and that was before I was into meteorites, So, it held all kinds of fanciful stuff. I am sure major parts of the movies DEAP IMPACT and The one about the old grogers blowing up the Asteroid headed for earth were both influenced by this book. My favorite, of course, was the guy surfing the tidal wave Through downtown LA, dodging buildings as one must dodge Pier footings. I had almost half a wafer cut from the core. Then I bought a full slice (very thin) of the core in the Al Lang Auction for $3,250. Ironically, VALERA (which killed a cow and is highly Documented as having done so) sold for a couple years for under $10 per gram. It has been going up slowly, but steadily. The point is, any conscientious individual would be fine (I have No personal interest, myself). Just because someone makes money dealing meteorites does not mean they can't serve the meteoritic community as well. Most dealers do - some more than others. ALL of them have to make Money, as well, but these two things are in no way in conflict, even Though a few dealers have made their own beds that way. It should be able to have it's own website domain name (e.g. www.met-list-meteorites.com). I volunteer to pay the yearly domain name fee if others would share the monthly web hosting fee (I could help with that, too) and the daily work. I am too stretched on other volunteer work, so I can't do much of the daily moderation (which of course could be done every couple of days instead of daily). Usually, slab is qualified with a full slice forming a giant Slab or a flat end piece forming a slab type of thing; but mostly slab is very rarely used as a meteorite term - and then, always In the context of a HUGE full slice - such as a giant slab Of Esquel (large enough to be a coffee table). In short, it is a vague term and a slice or end piece with Dimensions are much more definitive terms. While this is not directly related to meteorites it IS applicable: Is anyone on the list thechno-savvy (ie enough Of a computer geek) to know how to Foreword an Email that has attachments and INCLUDE the Attachments in the foreword??? Occasionally I want to do this, but have had to Download all attachments to my desktop and then Upload them individually to the email I am going To send. It would be SO much easier to just hit Foreword and include all the attachments. So, is there a way to do that? You can post to The list as I am sure most members would love to Have this ability if it exists. Hi All, A while back I ordered a meteorite (small part slice) and got One marked DHO811 on the side (black lettering on white Painted background). I contacted the seller and he assured me it was what I had Ordered and was accidentally labeled wrong and he had forgotten To remove it. He even sold me another piece. HOWEVER, I neglected to put it in a newly labeled baggy Or display box. It weighs 1.475g and I think it is a Lost City or perhaps A Claxton??? ($10 to $12/g for 5 to 7 gram pieces, good quality) List member Michael Gilmer is offering a VERY good Price, but his pieces are only up to 2 or 3 grams - but MUCH Cheaper. ($3 to $5/g??? - contact him for quote at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]) That is a VERY good price - but Only small pieces (prices go up quickly with size). I have some large pieces (10 to 16g) @ $10/g. So, if you want small, Michael Gilmer is the best price by Far. If you want size, mine are the best I am aware of (doesn't Mean there aren't large ones at a better price somewhere). While If you want medium sized, they guy you mention is a fair price. It depends on the size you are after and the total you are willing To spend. Greetings all, While I am looking foreword to seeing everyone in Tucson I must admit that with the combination of increased overhead and a HUGE lack of response to requests for entries in the auction, it is entirely possible this will be the final Tucson Meteorite Auction. Perhaps it has run its course. Personally, I hope not. While it is A LOT of work, it is, at least for me, a LOT of fun - and it has Always seemed to be a lot of fun for all who attend. HOWEVER: Deadline for minimum commission entries is in two days And I have 7 entries (usually, by this time I have 70 or 80). I Have to sell about $25K worth of specimens just to brake even, so, this is looking dismal as the sponsor of the event. It is always Possible tons of entries will come in at graduated fee rates as The event grows nearer and nearer, but that has never been the Case in the past. At least 75% of the items tend to be in and up in the on line catalog by now. Now, this will still make for an exciting auction, as there Will undoubtedly be at least a few more entries and, most important To the bidders, there will be plenty of room to allow for all the late entries, many of which I have turned down in the past and most of which turn out to be large whole Stones Irons with no minimum - so, buyers will have a field day. Also, Jerry Armstrong's lecture should be very meaningful - so Much so that I am hoping to have him audio tape it for me so I Don't miss it, myself. So, while THIS auction will go on, it is Looking like it will be a large financial loss which I can take only Once. If so, then, of course, this will be the 10th and the final. Not to worry if you are a buyer, as you will have a ball, no doubt: Jerry's lecture, Twink's Gold Bason Birthday Cake, food and Open bar with a hundred or more meteorite buddies tends to Make for a great time. I suppose it is entirely possible people are going to flood me With entries of high quality with no minimums over the next few Weeks or so, but I am not holding my breath. On the other hand, People seeing how few entries there are may realize their piece(s) Will be in higher demand, so, feel more inclined to enter specimens. Those that are thinking of submitting can still get the lowest Possible fee by submitting a list of the entries in the next 48 hrs Even if they have yet to take digital photos - I will extend the Deadline for photos on a person by person basis. Please submit high quality pieces only, as $10 and $20 items Are not going to keep the doors open. If you enter 10 or 20 items, some at the low end are fine, of course. Hi All, Someone contacted me off list re the specific schedule of the Tucson Gem Mineral Show. I Wrote him back, then realized there may be a bunch Of listees who would like the same info. Also, remember That Meteorite Exchange will be prosting their famous Show Guide closser to the event - that will tell you Exactly WHERE each and every dealer will be. For now, here is the schedule as far as the meteorite Part of it goes: -- BIRTHDAY BASH : Fri, Feb. 6 - usually about 8PM? TUCSON METEORITE AUCTION : Sat, Feb. 7 Jerry Armstrong lecture at 6 PM, Bidding starts at 7:30PM -- Dealers start trickling in on the weekend preceding the 7th and are mostly all there by Sunday - this year will be Like Sunday, Feb 1 - most try to open by Sat (this year, Sat, Jan 31) but some won't get unpacked until Monday (Feb 2) Many meteorite dealers start packing up to leave by Wed following The weekend of the Birthday Bash Meteorite Auction (this year, That will be Wed, Feb. 11) and all will leave no later than Sunday the following weekend after the BD Bash and Met. Auction (this year, Sun, Feb. 15) So, as you can see, there is NOT a simple answer. The weekend Of the Birthday Bash and the Meteorite Auction is the only weekend ALL meteorite dealers are there, set up and open. (This year, that is Fri, Feb 6 Sat, Feb 7). The weekend before after consists Of most, but all not there and in various stages of unloading or packing To leave and many not really open some of those days. If you want to Spend a whole week with the most meteorite dealers present you are best off from any seven days around and including Feb 6 7. I HOPE this answers your question. As I said, there is no clear Cut start date and the end date IS Sunday, Feb 15 this year - but Many dealers will have left prior to the official end date. Greetings all, There were some real problems securing a space for the Tucson Show Meteorite Auction; the place on Craycroft was sold After Checking around, it turned out the OLD VFW Post on Beverly did NOT sell (which is why I had switched), so, in 2009 we will be back at the Location we were for about 5 years running on Beverly just off Speedway. Full directions will be provided in a new page going up on my site VERY Soon - probably later today. The date will be Sat, Feb. 7 Jerry Armstrong will be lecturing in the space used a few years back By U of A and his lecture (NOT about painting) is going to be something people will not want to Miss. Jerry is also planning to bring NEW paintings to Tucson this year! These will be originals - paintings not commissioned but for sale - and there may even be one in the auction. He will also be bringing a variety of his high quality Giclees, as well. In Pictures: Tiny Bubbles From Baseball Cards To Beanie Babies A similar bubble occurred at roughly the same time in the fossil market. Through the late '90s, animal fossils appreciated in price, fueled by novelty and the plentiful money coming out of the tech bubble. The signal event of this craze was Sotheby's (nyse: BID - news - people ) 1997 sale of renowned T. rex skeleton Sue for $8.4 million. It was a surprising peak, says Peter Larson, paleontologist and president of the Black Hills Institute. It brought eight times more than I thought. Fossil-mania ran wild. Hollywood players like Nicholas Cage, Ron Howard and Leonardo DiCaprio maintained collections. Another T. rex, named Barnum, was bought by a team of investors who paid over $1 million dollars, hoping to flip the fossil. It eventually sold in 2006, for just $190,000. The bubble began to deflate when would-be flippers realized that fossil-hunting wasn't easy labor. So much work and expertise needs to go into this, says Larson. It's not the same thing as picking up a meteorite, or a coin. Most of the price (for a fossil) is in the labor. Unlike in the meteorite crash, the higher end of the fossil world has held value, even if it's not commanding the prices of the bubble's peak. People still want to put their money into something real that will maintain its value, says Larson. Rice, corn and trilobites will always have some value. One of the hallmarks of a bubble is that dealers find many different ways to market and resell a single product. Take the comic book boom that started in the mid-1980s. Comic book publishers would come to produce variant covers of the same issue, inciting collectors to buy the same product multiple times. Collectors then hoarded the books, ensuring a glut. Much like repackaged mortgages, buyers found that a different cover on the same product was no indication of safety, quality or long-term desirability. Throughout the late '80s, and into the early '90s, the bubble grew higher, says Joseph Koch, a partner in New York City-based comic book store Forbidden Planet. There were far too many books for too few customers, he says. Dealers would buy cases of comic books for $2000, and only sell a few of the comics, holding onto the rest in hopes they'd go up in value. For today's meteorite prices, I humbly assert that I am your only qualified, unbiased, experienced source. No one else is doing what I have done, and it is a massive project sold inexpensively to benefit all. Additionally, ten percent goes toward my charitable donation to astronomers in La Paz, Bolivia. Hi again, ALL investments are iffy - with one And only one exception: gold. Gold is the oldest currency throughout History of most cultures. In fact, money generally Has no meaning whatsoever except as it relates to Gold - how much gold will a dollar/peso/yen/ruple/pound, etc Buy? The bottom line is, gold, itself, never changes value - Currencies change value in relationship to gold. That being said, I would never, ever buy gold during A depression or even a recession. The time to buy gold is When the value of the dollar (or whatever currency) is strong (relative to gold). Then sell it when the nit wits Panic and the price of gold is through the ceiling. (of Course, ideally, one has enough $ to always keep about 20% of all one's wealth in gold in case the whole damned Racket goes to hell. However, as we can now see around the world, the world's governments are just going to print more Monopoly money until solvency is reached. These days, gold is not used exclusively, rather a cartel of bankers daily decide What each currency is worth relative to each of the other World currencies for that day. Weird. Now is the time to BUY most stock - when it is cheap. A great Many millionaires made their money doing just that. I have a friend that has hundreds of millions of dollars Of Microsoft Shares. Many years back one of his son's called Him and said, Gee, dad, I am really sorry about how much You lost last week. He said, What are you talking about? And his son told him his stock had fallen 195 million dollars The previous week. He responded, Son, I didn't loose one penny. You only loose if you sell when the stock is down. I am not worried, It will be back up whether it is a few weeks, a few months or a Few years doesn't matter. I have no intention of selling when it Is down. Interesting lesson I learned that day. Hi List, I am trying to see if I can now get list mail. For days I have been able to send, but NOT receive list mail. I have Taken myself off the list and re-registered - didn't work. Contacted Art (no easy task) and HE took me off and re- Registered me. No luck. I checked with my service provider (COX) and they claim they never block ANY email - so, they Ran me through the do it yourself spam blocker and had Me inject the list email address as an exception. Fell in the summer of 2007 in Chergach, Erg Chech in the Timbuktu district of the Republic of Mali. The material on the market is prized due to being a witnessed fall and having rich black fusion crust with a fresh, white interior showing in broken sections. I originally paid $5/g for a lot wholesale, though I have seen it offered for $4/g. I have a very nice shipment that just arrived and I am offering the 5 remaining pieces for $2.25/g for specimens with nearly100% FC and $2/g for specimens with a broken side. I do not believe anyone will ever see this material again for these prices and I will be offering it (if any don't sell) in my catalog at a considerably higher price. So, list members now have a very rare chance to get a nice, big, fresh stone for your collection at the price you now have to pay for highly weathered, unidentified NWA material. (PS: Some of the cut slices and end pieces of this material have shown distinct impact melt brecciation, though none of this material has any cut surfaces, so, I have no idea what a cut section would be like). Hi Norbert and all, In terms of the survey I conducted a few years ago with list Members, whether or not someone was a meteorite dealer Was left up to them - and there were a LOT of people who Reported themselves as meteorite dealers. I, personally, would consider having a meteorite web site Or a meteorite mailing list to be minimal as qualifying as a Meteorite dealer. Selling your upgraded collection pieces on Ebay occasionally would not cut it - however, if you sell meteorites On eBay on an ongoing basis, week after week, that would definitely Constitute a dealer and is exactly what Dean Bessey did for a very Long time before having a web site. HOWEVER, again, this topic (what constitutes a meteorite dealer) Can be found in the list archives and was discussed for days involving Many dozens if not hundreds of posts on the question. If you look in the archives, I did a survey study of the members of The Meteorite List. While there was not a 100% response rate, the Rate of response was VERY high. I asked 25 questions as I recall And one of them was, do you sell meteorites and does it make up A significant portion of your income. (or the like - y'all know I have A terrible memory. In any event, over 40% of the hundreds of people who responded Stated they were meteorite dealers! Please check the archives for specific statistical information. Those that offer up big impactors keep the speed down and those that talk of smaller impactors boost the speed estimate appropriately. But if a 5 km stoney impactor did all that damage, we are talking about velocities in the neighborhood of 35 to 45 km/sec. A highly eccentric orbit is required to achieve those kinds of encounter velocities with the Earth. The most recent theory (I like it) of where the Chicxuluber came from is the breakup of the parent body of the Baptistina family of asteroids about 160 million years ago (the biggest survivor of which is 298 Baptistina). The high encounter velocity also encourages proponents of the comet impact theory. True, the press release says: chemical traces of the impactors left behind in rocks... suggest otherwise, but you can forget that. The traces are of a carbonaceous chondrite, a likely composition for a comet, which is afterall just an asteroid with extra frosting. Sterling K. Since then, they have found another big spike in extraterrestrial osmium laid down at the time of another known impact event that happened 35 million years ago. At that time, multiple impacts shook the Earth in what is known as the Late Eocene impacts. I stayed with Jerry Armstrong (who was an amazing host) and was able to visit Dave Gheesling and Anita Westlake's homes and see their terrific Collections. Anita's home is like a living museum virtually flowing Over with fascinating goodies - with an impressive hallway of Macromount sized meteorite specimens very handsomely displayed. Dave's, on the other hand, is only one room A room that knocks Your socks off. I have only been blown away by 3 private collections, And his was one of them. I will save descriptions for an article - it Deserves it. The reason I write today is that I heard someone on the list asked If there were any meteorite and/or space art out there. Yes, grasshopper, There is: Jerry's work is renowned - appearing in several museums,on 3 book covers Gracing the cover of Meteorite Magazine. He was entirely out of Circulation for several years following 3 heart attacks and bypass Surgeries. However, he is now back in the game and painting away. In fact, he is currently working on a depiction of the Campo fall! I Can't wait to see it. Meanwhile, he has a few originals still available as well as some Remarkable copies produced on canvas with an amazing process called Gilcee.
