Re: [meteorite-list] Minor planet impactor witnessed over Botswana
Hey Rob, Nice find. A few more reports have come in, one with a nice video. https://www.amsmeteors.org/members/imo_view/event/2018/1924 The tractor shed seen in the video, I believe is just 200 meters south of the witness reported location. Looking at the surrounding buildings I'm pretty sure this is it. The lat/lon for the building in the video is: -26.743427° 26.222917° Thanks, Mike On Sat, Jun 2, 2018 at 8:22 PM, Matson, Rob D. via Meteorite-list wrote: > Hi All, > > Catalina Sky Survey has done it again -- discovery of an impacting NEO, this > time > just 8 1/2 hours prior to impact. [meteorite-list] AMS Mobile App For iPhone Android
Hello List, I’m happy to report that the American Meteor Society has just released a mobile app for iPhone and Android and its now available in both app stores. The purpose of the app is to enhance the data collected on fireball reports and provide a logging mechanism for meteor shower observing. Here’s an article about the App from Discover magazine that was just published yesterday. http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/citizen-science-salon/2014/04/15/meteorite-app/#.U06E6OZdXni To download the App search the store for “AMS Meteors”. Here's an abstract about the app that was submitted to the Asteroids, Comets Meteors conference. The American Meteor Society (AMS) founded in 1911 pioneered the visual study of meteors and has collected data relating to meteor observations and bright fireballs for over 100 years. In December 2010, the online fireball reporting system was upgraded to an interactive application that utilizes Google Maps and other programmatic methods to pinpoint the observer’s location, azimuth and elevation values with a high degree of precision. The AMS has collected 10s of 1000s of witness reports relating to 100s of events each year since the new application was released. Three dimensional triangulation methods that average the data collected from witnesses have been developed that can determine the start and end points of the meteor with an accuracy of 50km (when compared to published solutions provided by operators of all sky cameras). RA and DEC radiant estimates can also be computed for all significant events reported to the AMS. With the release of the mobile application, the AMS is able to collect more precise elevation angles than through the web application. Users can file a new report directly on the phone or update the values submitted through a web report. After web users complete their fireball report online, they are prompted to download the app and update their observation with the more precise data provided by the sensors in the mobile device. The mobile app also provides an accurate means for the witness to report the elapsed time of the fireball. To log this value, the user drags the device across the sky where they saw the fireball. This process is designed to require no button click or user interaction to start and stop the time recording. A count down initiates the process and once the user’s phone crosses the plane of azimuth for the end point of the fireball the velocity timer automatically stops. Users are asked to log the recording three times in an effort to minimize error. The three values are then averaged into a final score. Once enough witnesses have filed reports, elapsed time data collected from the mobile phone can be used to determine the velocity of the fireball. With the velocity, trajectory solution and RA/DEC the AMS can plot orbital estimates for significant fireball events reported to the society. Our hope is that overtime this catalog of events will reveal patterns relating to the origins of bright fireballs at certain times of year. The AMS also hopes to be able to associate fireball events reported to the society with known meteor showers when RA/DEC radiant estimates fall close enough to those of known showers. In addition to the enhanced fireball reporting application, the AMS Mobile App provides a meteor shower calendar with information, radiant maps and moon conditions for all upcoming showers. There is also a meteor observing function inside the app that enables meteor observers to log meteor observations directly on the phone and have that data uploaded to the AMS online database and associated with that users observing profile. To record observations the user simply points the device at the part of the sky where they saw the meteor. They then drag their finger across the screen in the direction the meteor traveled. The user is then prompted to enter the magnitude of the event and associate the meteor with a known shower that is active for that date. When the user completes their session, all of the data for each meteor along with the information relating to the session is uploaded to the AMS website. Users can then review the data online in the AMS member’s area. Data across all users can be aggregated for statistical analysis and ZHR estimates. Currently the AMS has over 10,000 registered users and facebook followers. In 2013 over 680,000 people visited the AMS website and the society received over 18,000 witness reports relating to 713 confirmed unique fireball events. [meteorite-list] AMS Presentation for IMC
Dear Metlist Meteor Obs, I sent this out a couple of days ago but I forgot to go plain text and I don't think it ever made it. If you already got this email, sorry for the duplication. Hello From Poznan! The IMC finished up today and it was really an amazing convention. Many thanks to the IMO board and members for their kindness and hard work to make this convention happen and also make it GREAT! I really had an amazing time and met fabulous people. I wanted to share the presentation we made for the IMO conference about the American Meteor Society Technology Platform. I hope you all like it. https://vimeo.com/72551924 The IMO has agreed to adopt the AMS software so we will be rolling this out world wide. We have configured the software to easily support a 'white-label' brand and translated text. This means any astronomical society, meteor society, observatory or other organization who wants to collect fireball reports can 'brand' the software with their logo and native language text and then link to it to capture fireball witness data with the most precision possible. Setting up your version of the AMS fireball report is easier than it sounds and there is no cost. If you are interested please contact me. Re: [meteorite-list] Russia mega meteor and asteroid 2012DA14 related, yes I think so...
Esko posted these yesterday on meteor obs. This is estimated. The wired article said it used SETI results. Using mainly the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZxXYscmgRg and the weather satellite image, with no real good calibrations, I get a rough solar system orbit ( the last stage by means of Marco Langbroek Excel sheet). ( Entry with velocity 17 km/s ( 17.3) from about az. 97 with the slope of 18 deg. Corresponding (luminous) start heigth (assumed, quite heigh for the velocity, but considers very big size) 100 km and the end 7+ km.) a=1.66 e=0.52 q=0.80 AU aphelion at 2.53 AU node=326.43 ( J2000.0 ) arg peri=116.0 i=4.05 43.6 days after perihelion The geocentric radiant is 338, +2 This is only of very general quality and given with (a lot) too many decimals. The orbit does not much resemble the 2009 Feb, 16 innish fireball that I told of yesterday. According to that solution, the landing site would be not much more than 30 km away from that video recording site. But I do not know the coordinates of this, except very roughly. There quite probably are a lot of small fragments fallen down much earlier along the track, (with possibly a number of bigger ones, besides the main piece). [meteorite-list] coloma witnesses
Hi Folks, I'm going back to Coloma on Friday and staying for another week. While I am there I would like to interview some witnesses in Coloma and surrounding areas. Very few witnesses from near/inside the strewnfield submitted reports to the AMS and it would be good to get these reports. When I do the interview, I usually use a tripod, inclinometer and GPS compass. This allows me to capture the azimuth and elevation angles for the beginning and ending points as accurately as possible. Any data I gather I will submit to the AMS site and it will be publicly available. I want to do these interviews in an attempt to improve the information we have on the trajectory. Re: [meteorite-list] coloma witnesses
Dan, Thanks yes I did see the video. Very awesome. I've been able to do some work utilizing the topographic features of google earth and mapping them to the pictures, but there's still a good bit of uncertainty. With regard to the picture and video, what we really need to do is get out to these 2 locations (North Reno for Lisa South of Fresno for the video) with a DSLR camera, tripod and a clear night. Then take an astrophoto recreating the same field of view as was used in the fireball images, but also capturing stars in the image. We could then stretch out the 2 sets of photos in photoshop so that the mountain and ground features line up. At that point we would have very nice AZ EL readings for both of these photos. I'm working with someone now who is trying to get these calibration photos done, but he has limited time and it might take him a month or more to get it done. So.. if anyone is near reno or fresno and would like to help out with this effort please LMK. Based on the witness reports I've reviewed so far, I believe there is a bit of northern tilt to the trajectory. My hope is that by interviewing witnesses close to coloma, we maybe able to confirm this. Any witness contacts will be put to good use, so please send them to me, if you got em. Re: [meteorite-list] coloma witnesses
Dan, I can't say with much certainty right now. The trajectory Jake came up with is the best guess right now and I do think it is very close to reality. However, based on some witness reports and also analysis of the 2 videos I think there could be a 5-10º tilt toward the north as opposed to a straight E-W track. Take this with a grain of salt though because I can not prove this right now. Re: [meteorite-list] Coloma/Lotus/SM fall map to date
Jason, I agree with what you are saying. Most of the finds are going to come from the easier/clear spots where the most people are looking hardest. I do think the majority of the finds are being recorded properly, but there have been some that have not been. Jim, I don't want to get into specifics publicly or make any accusations. Just saying: It would be nice if people would report the true location of their finds, and if they can't or don't want to, to just not report the find at all or keep the coordinates private. Posting fake coordinates is just a really crappy thing to do. In the grand scheme of things, most of the finds are probably correct, but I'm sure there are some that are not. Thanks, Mike On Wed, May 9, 2012 at 4:45 PM, jason utas jasonu...@gmail.com wrote: Hello Jim, Michael, All, I'm not so sure about that. Finds on trails should have nothing to do with ethics, as trails typically belong to the land they run through. ...And that 7.3 gram stone I found was sitting right in the middle of the trail (I'll post a photo on facebook soon). I'm impressed by Mark Dayton's nearby five-gram find -- he must have been bush-whacking, and there was *a lot* of poison-oak in there. We spent some time off-trail in there, but it was tough going, and you'd have to just about step on a meteorite in order to find it. Same goes for most grassy areas. [meteorite-list] Sutters Mill - Proper Care Guide
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has a developed a how to guide for caring for this meteorite. I've heard it should be refrigerated to keep bacteria from growing on it , but i also heard, freezing it damages the crystals. I'm also curious, doesn't bacteria grow on everything and all meteorites equally, or will this meteorite get more bacteria on it? I've also heard things about using nitrogen to stabilize it. And a few other things. I just want to get a straight answer regarding the 'best' way to care for this meteorite. the follow up to this question/answer I still wonder about is: after dark flight begins, how many seconds will it take to completely decelerate so that all forward momentum is lost after dark flight starts. for example: if the meteor goes dark at 4km/s how many seconds before it will be at 0km/s and/or what does that deceleration curve look like? [meteorite-list] Fwd: (meteorobs) 2012/02/01 TX Fireball
-- Forwarded message -- From: Bill Cooke cook...@comcast.net Date: Wed, Feb 8, 2012 at 9:42 PM Subject: Re: (meteorobs) 2012/02/01 TX Fireball To: Meteor science and meteor observing meteor...@meteorobs.org We have spent the last few days analyzing the Sandia camera videos kindly provided by James Beauchamp and Kevin Palivec (also thanks to Esko Lyytinen for his insight and comments). These have enabled us to determine a decent trajectory for the meteor; unfortunately the meteor entered at a shallow angle and its path/duration was so long (18.5 seconds) that the linear approximation used in the trajectory codes (MILIG, courtesy of J. Borovicka, and SMETS) is not valid, resulting in a possible error of several (~5) kilometers in the final position. Consequently, we did not attempt the dark flight calculations needed to determine the impact zone, as an error of 5 kilometers in position at 30-40 km altitude would translate to over a hundred square kilometers of uncertainty in the meteorite fall area. I can say that a solution using the first hundred frames of video (meteor is above 65 km altitude) yields a trajectory consistent with the Edgewood doppler returns; all other solutions put the meteor path about 20 km to the north of the radar signature. Here are the beginning and end coordinates of the meteor, based on a solution involving all 976 points (frames) from the 3 videos: Meteor beginning point: 99.176 W, 32.108 N at an altitude of 92 km Meteor end point: 96.357 W, 32.745 N at an altitude of 43 km Mean residuals in trajectory fit (residuals show systematic trends due to breakdown of linear path approximation) Coleman: -0.045 km vertical, 0.703 km horizontal Hawley: -1.889 km vertical, -1.711 km horizontal OKC: +1.302 km vertical, -0.123 km horizontal Again, the end point is NOT the impact location; it represents the meteor position in the last frame in the OKC all sky camera video. Average speed is 16.3 +/- 1.4 km/s Initial meteor speed: ~18 +/- 1 km/s End meteor speed: 9.8 +/- 4 km/s I am confident this meteor produced meteorites. Seen by our camera way over in New Mexico, it was very bright, with peak absolute magnitude around -14 (lower limit). Mass estimates from the light curve range from about 20 kg to just over a metric ton (1017 kg), depending on whose equations/technique you use. I consider a few hundred kg likely, but would find it hard to argue against the metric ton figure. How much mass made it to the ground is anyone's guess, but be assured that this was a BIG rock that blazed across the Texas sky. The gory details are in this pdf file: http://www.billcooke.org/events/20120202_0157.pdf The complete meteor trajectory (text file) is here: http://www.billcooke.org/events/smets.txt Reference for MILIG: Borovicka J.: The comparison of two methods of determining meteor trajectories from photographs. Hello, I've been working on the trajectory for this fireball, but i've been a little discombobulated due to the mystery over Kevin's Hawley / Coleman camera location. A friend forward'd me what I believe to be the best location for Kevins camera and we suspect it is in coleman and not hawley. I am a lot happier with these solutions and want to share now that I'm more confident. I want to stress this is still just a v1 cut at the trajectories and the calculations are based on manual solving of the allsky images, which is an imperfect art form. So, this is probably wrong, but the best calculated guess with available information. I'm willing to share my values and KMZ with anyone who is interested and I would actually like to compare notes with someone to make sure I didn't make any major mis-calculations with regard to lat/long/az/el values. [meteorite-list] Meteorites in Paris
I posted this on FB, but wanted to share with metlist friends too. The pictures should be accessible to all. Yesterday was a lazy day in Paris partly because of jet lag, traveling and touring but mostly because we drank too much the night before -- yes we were hung over. Collectively, we decided to be lazy for a day and just hang out in cafes and wander the streets aimlessly. While I enjoy being lazy every once in a while, I never wander aimlessly and to be honest I had an alterior motive to aimlessly wander into the Carion gallery. I would use only 'the force', my intuition and my little knowledge of Parisian geography to guide the way. Unfortunately, my lack of direction and overall ineptitude for navigation caused me to believe north was south and south was north, so while I thought I was walking towards the islands of the Seine, in reality I was walking away from them. Had I been in America with a working data plan, I would have been using Google earth mobile like a champ, but unfortunately this was not a technological possibility with a US ATT iPhone in France and I was left to my raw senses and the few tools available to me. I expected to find the river after a 1 or 2 blocks, but after the 3rd or 4th I gave up and realized I was lost. So we wandered aimlessly until we came upon a building with a military guard out front that we caught in the middle of some sort of ceremony. After a few minutes, we realized this was the president's home (the French white house) and the guards were changing shifts (the changing of the guard). We watched for a while and then started to move on when a dinosaur skeleton caught the corner of Tracy's eye and she said 'hey, check this out'. Through the window we saw a triceratop’s skull and looked up for a sign of explanation. We had stumbled upon a Sotheby's auction house and cautiously went inside. To our delight the business was open to the public and operated much like a museum except all exhibits were on sale and priced! The triceratopps head could be ours for a mere 220,000-250,000 euro! As we explored the gallery to my delight there were a few exquisite meteorites on display. And so the universe guided me subconsciously to the finest space rocks Paris had to offer. If only my nose would guide me to similar material in the fields of Lancaster. apprécier les images ci-dessous! P.S. Re: [meteorite-list] (meteorobs) Major Fireball Over Southern California, Arizona, and Southern Nevada
Jim, Reports come into the AMS website and go directly into a database with a PENDING status. A human being has to review the reports, assign an event ID and then approve the event before it will show up on the site. Bob Lunsford usually does this work. Bob doesn't get off work today until 3:00 PM so I'm helping him out and reviewed and approved them all just now. Because we have the new system and everything is in a database I was able to review and publish 100+ reports in 5 minutes. That puts 100 reviewed and approved reports onto the AMS site in about 14 hours after the fall. That is pretty freaking good IMO!!! Considering on the old AMS website, the process was manual and an event of this size would have taken Bob Lunsford 10s of hours of HTML labor to manually update the website, this is a major improvement. Not sure if you remember but in the past with the manual reporting it could take days or weeks before the logs would be updated as the process was very time intensive for Bob. I have been thinking about adding a section to the website where you could see what is inside the 'unapproved queue'. This might be a nice feature for folks who are eagerly waiting to see the reports of new fireballs ;). As you noted the reports are now available on the site. Should have maps and trajectories in another hour or so. For more information regarding the new AMS website please see this post and check out the power point slides that illustrate the new capabilities of the site and fireball reporting tools. http://www.mikesastrophotos.com/comets/nasa-meteor-workshop-august-3-4-2011/ Thanks, Mike Thanks! Re: [meteorite-list] (meteorobs) Major Fireball Over Southern California, Arizona, and Southern Nevada
Here's an update on this fall with a google map of all the witness plots. http://www.amsmeteors.org/2011/09/major-fireball-event-seen-from-southern-california-arizona-and-nevada-september-14th-2011-945-pdt/ You can review all of the AMS witness reports visually with this map. I'm still working the trajectory solutions. Right now I can't get a very reliable solution because of the wide diversity in reports. So really need to spend more time refining the witness reports -- this is a case of too much data right now. Best guess regarding the termination point is somewhere between Yuma and Phoenix AZ. I would suggest looking for radar in this general area. On the negative side, there are few credible sound reports. Only 1 report of a boom and the boom came before the guy saw the meteor, so that sounds a bit fishy. Also the trajectory solutions I have, all show what looks to be a very shallow entry angle and a lot of witnesses are reporting a long event (10+ seconds), so it would be interesting to hear some opinions regarding the possibility of space trash. We will update this post with more info as it becomes available. Those interested in finding meteorites or chasing this AZ fireball should really try tracking down all sky video from one or more of the numerous camera operators in the area. http://allsky.ca/NAdatabase.html On Thu, Sep 15, 2011 at 12:23 PM, Mike Hankey mike.han...@gmail.com wrote: This has made national news on MSNBC and CNN... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44529188/ns/technology_and_science-space/ http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/09/15/southwest.strange.light/index.html?hpt=hp_t2 AMS reports are now over 100. Re: [meteorite-list] 2011-06-15 - Georgia Fireabll All Sky Video
Hey Folks, Just a few corrections to this original post. 1) It was Steve Farmer not Fisher who captured the video 2) It seems the end of the event was not captured by the camera, so it may have been a little longer. 3) As pointed out by Esko on meteorobs, the video has been slowed down 2x and the original video is about 8 seconds and not 16. This makes a big difference with satellite re-entry or natural fireball theories. It is interesting to compare the track derived visually from the intersection of vectors on the witness reports and the actual 3d track computed mathematically using precise data collected from three all sky cameras. It is also worth noting the mass estimate of the meteoroid -- 90kg, that is 3x the mass estimate of the recent OKC fireball. Bill Cooke has been nice enough to send me a dark flight model for the recent TN fall. The track was computed with 3 all sky cameras. We decided it would be best to not post this on the web as doing so could encourage bad behavior from the masses and wackos on the internet. This could lead to risk for hassle / trouble with local landowners and bad press for the meteorite community. Instead we decided that it would be best to let the community know the information exists and provide it by request only. So if anyone wants this KMZ feel free to contact me and I will send it to you. If you have already contacted me earlier for the track info, I will send you the whole package shortly. I personally think it is really great that Bill's office has started to roll out these cameras and is openly sharing the information and analysis. This is a real benefit to the meteorite community. It is really nice of Bill to share this info with us so please lets not screw this up by trespassing, being disrespectful to locals or getting in trouble. Below are Bill's comments regarding the KMZ file and how it should be used: Bear in mind that we lost track of the meteor fairly high up, before it underwent significant deceleration. Therefore this is a rough estimate only, pinpointing a general impact area. Please also emphasize hunters should respect the wishes of the property holders. The Scottsboro farmer did not much appreciate people tramping on his land, which is why I am reluctant to divulge impact locations. We'll give this a try. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Bob, You beat me to the punch. I literally just pushed publish on this report: http://www.amsmeteors.org/2011/04/large-fireball-event-reported-4611/ The NASA All Sky Camera Network captured the event on 2 cameras. The AMS post includes a still picture of the event and a map of the AMS plots. Early analysis of the AMS reports put the termination of the event SE of Louisville KY. [meteorite-list] Nevada Meteors WAS Re: East Coast Meteor and MN Meteor 1MAR2011
Count, At least you live in a place where the meteorites can be easily found when they fall. These East Coast Meteors are a real tease. It looks like last night's went in the ocean. In theory NV (or any place else in the world) should get just as many meteors as the east coast. I just don't think there are as many people out there to see them, compared to the densely populated east coast. So the question is If a meteor falls in the NV desert and nobody is there to witness it, does it still make a sound? Does it still leave meteorites on the ground? Thanks, Mike P.S. The AMS website now has a 'search by state' feature. Here are all of the reported NV falls dating back to 2005. http://bit.ly/hLBeo3 (this search will only show reports where the witness was from the state of NV). You just had one recently 12/26/2010 AMS ID: 914 , that was witnessed by 16 people: http://bit.ly/i9fKoU Here's an image of the plot-able witness reports: http://i.imgur.com/Ovsjn.jpg It looks like the flight path would have gone over central CA, which I believe is heavily covered with allsky cameras. Re: [meteorite-list] A query - interest in an online radar class?
Marc, I think this is a great idea and I would be interested. Something for you to ponder regarding the class Instead of doing a 'live' class via webex, you could do a pre-recorded class. There are a lot of advantages to this. It may be a little more work up front, but once you are done you can charge for the class 24/7 into perpetuity and will have to do very little to no incremental work for each additional class / student. It could be a 'rich media' e-book of sorts... combined with video files of lecture, text and images/screen shots. You could even have sample data files (for the west fall or grimsby etc). and then include 'credits' for follow up email questions. You would need to do the setup work up front and develop the product (which you would need to do for a class anyway), then password protect the directory its hosted in and sell one-time subscriptions to it and bill via paypal. I could help you out with any of the website stuff and/or video editing if you had questions about it. Just something to think about. We're talking about knowledge that has taken me many hours to accrue so I'd like to charge for the class, but I think that meteorite hunting should be within the reach of hobbyists so I'd keep it inexpensive. If I know how many people are interested I can make some plans and look into a suitable online platform, perhaps Skype or Webex. I'm thinking that it would take a couple of two-hour classes or thereabouts. Re: [meteorite-list] Frederick, Maryland Fireball
Thanks for sending this out. The article is a little confusing regarding the dates. Part of the article says it was tuesday and part says wednesday. Confusion is added considering there were 2 fireballs out here this week. One was Tuesday: Dec 28th @ 6:45 - 6:50 the other was Wednesday: Dec 29th @ 8:30 The one tuesday night was spotted all up and down the east coast and has resulted in close to 100 AMS reports. I think that's the most ams reports for a single event since WI. Borda News-Post Staff It wasn't a bird. It wasn't a plane. It wasn't even ... well, you know, but there was something that zipped across the evening sky at about 6:50 p.m. Wednesday and a number of area folks say they saw it. I tell you what, the hair stood up on the back of my neck, said Al Labrush, a veteran meteorite watcher and collector. It was frightening. Labrush said he was standing near Danielle's restaurant downtown when he caught sight of something that looked to be about 1,500 feet away. I heard this sizzling behind me. ... I turned and looked: This huge meteorite came. ... It was throwing off sparks and chunks, Labrush said. I'm into meteorites -- every time they call for meteor showers, I'm out. I very seldom get scared -- (but) I never want to see another one like that. Steve Lawrence saw it, too. Lawrence was driving home on Old Kiln Road when he saw the bright object in the northern sky, like a fireball, through the passenger side window. Three white flashes erupted, lighting up the night like daylight for an instant, and then it all seemed to disintegrate, he said. Night turned to day, Lawrence said. The flash was like heat lightning. Sean Dennison saw it, too -- from Hagerstown. Dennison, who works with Lawrence, was walking from his house to his car when he saw it. It was so unusual that he went back inside to tell his wife, before heading out to play racquetball. He heard Lawrence talking about the bright light Wednesday and chimed in. I saw the same thing, said Dennison, who compared the white brightness to burning magnesium, and the object moved slower than a falling star. A burst of sparkles, like fireworks, concluded the scene, he said. Lawrence said he watched a plume of smoke hanging in the night sky for 20 minutes. Robert Gutro, a NASA deputy news chief, said he took a call from a woman he did not know who telephoned Tuesday to report what she had seen. She was kind of panicked, Gutro said. She described the bright object moving across the sky, and it broke up into pieces, he said. A spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command said NORAD did not report tracking anything, which rules out so-called space junk, such as out-of-commission satellites. Frederick County Emergency Communications reported no calls about it. If it was a meteor, it likely left a trail of debris, said expert John Wasson at the University of California at Los Angeles. He said it sounded like a meteor is probably what people saw. Wasson predicted that meteor hunters such as Mike Farmer of Tucson, Ariz., would be on the trail before anyone else. Farmer said he surely would be. Normally, I would jump on the plane and come out, Farmer said when reached by telephone. But Wednesday he was preparing to go to the Middle East on an expedition. Farmer was not aware of any meteoric activity here, but based on the accounts of Tuesday's event, he said he would have people look into it. Lawrence said he had the unsettling feeling that whatever it was fell less than a mile from his house, and he planned to look for evidence. You need to experience that right behind your house, he said __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] NASA finds extra-terrestrial amino-acids in Sudan meteorites
Rob, Marc sent me this response after I posted the article: Yeah, apparently de novo synthesis. Hot, carbon-rich gases in the ureilite formed a small amount of amino acids in the meteorite as it cooled. My bet is that it happened on metal surfaces which acted as a catalyst, and it's not all that surprising. All you need is an appreciable amount of nitrogen in the source gas and you should get a little bit of everything as it cools. I got the impression from the article / marc that the heat happened a long time ago during the meteorites original formation or metamorphose and not during its atmospheric entry. Mike On Thu, Dec 30, 2010 at 4:41 PM, Matson, Robert D. robert.d.mat...@saic.com wrote: Hi Mike and List, Have been meaning to post a reply about the article link Mike posted: http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/301636 I assume they are talking about Almahata Sitta. I had not heard this before. Yes, Almahata Sitta is right. As we all know, ET amino acids have been found in plenty of carbonaceous meteorites, perhaps most famously within Murchison. So I was curious to find out what was so special about finding them in carbon-rich 2008 TC3 (Almahata Sitta). A quote from the article: Amino-acids have been found in carbon-rich meteorites before but this is the first time the acid substances have been found in a meteorite as hot as 2,000 Fahrenheit (1,100c). This naturally heated hot rock should have obliterated any form of organic material, reports National Geographic. Daniel Glavin, an astro-biologist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland said, Previously, we thought the simplest way to make amino acids in an asteroid was at cooler temperatures in the presence of liquid water, this meteorite suggests there's another way involving reactions in gases as a very hot asteroid cools down. So the obvious question to ask is why anyone thinks that the interior of 2008 TC3 was ever heated up to 1100 C? Sure, the *surface* of the asteroid got very hot when it entered earth's atmosphere, but how is that different from Murchison or any other meteorite-generating fall? The interior of 2008 TC3 should never have been above freezing. So something must be missing from the article to explain why they believe Almahata Sitta's interior got so hot. About all I can come up with is that they assumed 2008 TC3 was a rubble pile (almost certainly true given the range of petrology), and that it fragmented into tiny pieces very high in the atmosphere while still moving at cosmic velocity. Instead of heat from ablation only affecting the outer centimeter or so of the surface of a 4-meter monolithic rock, all the individual fragments got the blast treatment. I still don't buy it, though. Small fragments decelerate so rapidly that there wouldn't be time to heat up the interior of even a 1 diameter rock. So the question is, am I missing something? --Rob __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Ice Meteorites From Jesus
Not to ask a stupid question, but, isn't it safe to assume that ice originating in outer space would never be able to make it down to earth's surface due to the heat and pressure of the ablation process? So even if there were blocks of alien filled ice floating around in space, wouldn't these be melted/vaporized/destroyed by the time they hit the surface? Is there any exception to this (like maybe a really slow moving piece of ice, or a really really big piece of ice or a really really small piece of ice)? Also, I think someone should refer this guy to the experts at unco meteorites, I've heard they have a lot of experience with this sort of thing. Larry Knowles AOL News (Nov. 29) -- A Michigan man claiming to possess an ice meteorite rich in extraterrestrial organisms will announce in a news conference Tuesday that alien life, at long last, has been found. The announcement will take place at a Ramada Inn in South Haven, Mich. I prayed for Jesus to send me an ice meteorite, because I knew it would be quite valuable, Duane P. Snyder, 65, said of the chunk of ice he found on a South Haven roadway in 2000. Valuable indeed. For centuries, humankind has sought confirmation that it isn't alone in the universe. If Snyder's claim is accurate, the South Haven resident will be catapulted to worldwide fame, and the Ramada Inn, 50 miles west of Kalamazoo, will likely become an iconic landmark for the human race. Duane P. Snyder E.T. may phone home -- from a Ramada Inn in South Haven, Mich. The red object above was found embedded in a chunk of ice in 2000. The owner of the chunk, Duane P. Snyder, believes the squiggle is an alien life form and will discuss his finding at the Ramada Inn this week. In March 2000, Snyder noticed several chunks of ice on the road near his home. Since it hadn't snowed for weeks, he deduced that the ice must have been an ice meteorite. After gathering up a few pieces and stashing them in his freezer, he spent the next 10 years trying to convince scientists to analyze the frozen mass. However, Snyder received little interest from the scientific community, and in September, he paid to have chemical analyses performed by two commercial laboratories. What the labs found -- that samples contained particles with unique molecular structures -- convinced Snyder that he indeed had in his possession alien life forms. He has set up a website, snydericyrite.com, where people can purchase the lab reports and photos of the particles. He's given the particles descriptive names, such as Red Watani Worm, Six Legged Life Form and Clear Snakelike Life Form. In a phone interview with AOL News, Snyder emphasized that more rigorous analysis is needed to determine just what sort of alien life form he has, adding that the prohibitive cost has so far prevented him from getting tests done. I'm hoping some scientist calls and says, 'Hey, Duane, I'll do it for you,' Snyder said. Last week, Snyder took strides toward getting that call. He issued a press release, under the headline Ice Meteorite Found With Extraterrestrial Life-Forms, in which he announced Tuesday's news conference. The release received worldwide distribution and, according to Snyder, media outlets from Germany, Mexico and Sweden plan to cover the story. All the attention means that, for a brief moment, the Ramada Inn in South Haven will be at the center of the world -- or, in this case, universe. And that has the staff at the Ramada Inn slightly anxious. We haven't had a chance to speak with Mr. Snyder, Saima Farrukh, director of operations for the Ramada Inn in South Haven, told AOL News. And we're all kind of curious to know what kind of life form he has. Farrukh added that the press release only piqued her curiosity. It didn't give a lot of info, she said, so I was going through my chemistry book to find out what the terms mean. Snyder, a former Air Force mechanic and self-described inventor, spent a good portion of his life looking for meteorites before stumbling on his momentous block of ice. I'd been hunting meteorites for a long time, he said, and I kept finding 'meteor-wrongs.' __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list

I saw this on Drudge report this morning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEtTl9cGrJc Looks like a meteor at first. I had seen the report on NYC lights last week and accepted the weather baloon theory as you couldn't see the tail during the day light hours. but this video has a distinct tail, and well... i dunno. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] OT: Dowsing is real, but exoplanets are dubious?!
Rob, I have it on good authority, dowsing is real. According to the New York Times, more than fifteen hundred remote sensing devices have been sold to Iraq's Ministry of the Interior, at prices ranging from $16,500 to $60,000 each. The devices are used for bomb and weapon detection at checkpoints, and have no battery or other power source. Sounds great, but according to a retired United States Air Force officer, Lt. Col. Hal Bidlack, they work on the same principle as a Ouija board — the power of suggestion. He described the wand as nothing more than an explosives divining rod. Even though the device has been debunked by the US Military, the US Department of Justice, and even Sandia National Laboratories, the Iraqis are thrilled with the devices. 'Whether it's magic or scientific, what I care about is it detects bombs,' said Maj. Gen. Jehad al-Jabiri, head of the Ministry of the Interior's General Directorate for Combating Explosives. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/04/world/middleeast/04sensors.html On Sun, Oct 17, 2010 at 5:18 PM, Rob Matson mojave_meteori...@cox.net wrote: Hi Phil, Your last statement is not true. It's very hard to find scientific studies involving anything even remotely connected to the paranormal (gasp!). Look into the German studies cited here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk%3ADowsing I read that abstract earlier in the week. If there were even a half- dozen such pier-reviewed papers, I would still consider it rather weak evidence given the magnitude of the importance of such a discovery if it were true. A sixth sense is an extraordinary claim -- where is the extraordinary evidence? What I wonder is why you don't have the same level of skepticism toward dowsing that you do toward black holes and exoplanets (which have ABUNDANT evidence in favor of their existence). Particularly in the case of exoplanets, the only legitimate reason for your skepticism would be personal unfamiliarity with the rather bullet-proof science. Exoplanets are just as real as planets in our own solar system. --Rob __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Close Shave Asteroids
I read two asteroids came pretty close to earth today. http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2010/09/harvard_scienti_1.html Here's a video of one of them. http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/09/asteroid-animation-2/ in the first frame of the video, there's something to the left of the asteroid, looks kind of like a plume, and fades out over frames 2 3. [meteorite-list] East Coast Fireball - May 10th, 2010
I imported the AMS reports from Monday morning's reported fireball into google earth. Based on witness reports on the AMS and Frank Roylance's blog it sounded like a pretty big possibly meteorite dropping event. 33 AMS reports for 4:45 AM is a lot. It was sighted as far south as South Carolina and as far north as Massachusetts. Reports of fragmentation etc. But... as far as I can tell this thing flew over and landed in the Atlantic. Would be interested in hearing second opinions. I posted a map image of the observations and the google earth file on my blog. http://www.mikesastrophotos.com/comets/east-coast-fireball-may-10th-2010-445-am/ __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

is it significant that the WI and MD fireballs from 5/10 were 15 minutes apart from each other? or is this just one of those unrelated coincidences? reading these comments it sounds like the MD one could have ended up in the Atlantic. http://weblogs.marylandweather.com/2010/05/early_risers_spot_green_fireba.html On Tue, May 11, 2010 at 4:10 PM, Matson, Robert D. robert.d.mat...@saic.com wrote: Hi All, I don't see anything on the La Crosse or Green Bay radars at the time of the fall -- at least nothing obvious in the vicinity of Oshkosk/ Fond du Lake/Lake Winnebago/Lake Poygan. Re: [meteorite-list] Another Livingston (or whatever) story
List, I'm not sure if this has been covered already or not, but I have a question regarding this statement: The largest chunk yet of a meteor that exploded over Wisconsin last month has been found...and now have a 10.6-ounce (300-gram) chunk of space rock Wasn't Joe's stone 332 grams? / Wouldn't his be considered the largest yet? Is the press estimating the actual weight of Marvin's and in reality its more than 300g? Another article was posted recently that made the same statement. I'm just wondering and curious if I'm the only person that noticed this. Maybe I'm mis-informed or missing something?
