Very interesting indeed, thanks, Paul, for sharing. Would be thrilling to be
compared with Stefan Ralew's NWA 7325. Surprisingly I couldn't find any
references to NWA 7325.

The meteorite which fell between BANMA (班玛) and Mǎn Zhǎng Xiāng (满掌乡), in Banma
County (班玛县), Golog Tibetan Autonomous prefecture, Qinghai province in China on
24 August 2016 at about 21:00 local time is now officially registered in the
Meteoritical Bulletin Database as BANMA.

http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=64021

Still the exact fall location remains confusing.

Both 33°15'11"N, 100°27'54"E AND 33°15.18’N, 100°27.9’E  are mentioned in the
writeup.

Could anyone clarify the exact fall location? Thank you!

Hi all,

I now have gotten some additional info from the Sonneborgh bureau:

Sonnenborgh did not have a weight available, but the stolen Serooskerken ( =
Ellemeet) diogenite piece (pictured in the link above) is about 7 cm (2.8) in
diameter.

The rest of the stolen inventory is not that special, but includes:

- a Bilitonite tektite
- four pieces of Holbrook
- a piece of Dalgaranga
- a piece of Wellman
- a thin section of Arispe
- a pseudo-meteorite (Mellissant)
- a small tube with ash of the Vesuvius volcano

The meteorites were, along with some other valuables and papers, in a safe which
was lifted in its entirety, so the meteorites were likely not the main target of
the heist.

The stolen Ellemeet fragment is one of only two larger pieces in existence.

[meteorite-list] Oued Awlitis 001 - Serendipity !

2014-07-06 Thread karmaka via Meteorite-list
Oued Awlitis 001 - Serendipity !

That's what I call serendipity ! Congratulations!

History: (A. Irving and M. Aid) In January 2014 a group of eight people
traveling in two cars were returning northward after an unsuccessful meteorite
hunting trip to southern Morocco, when they stopped near Oued Awlitis to cook
dinner by the roadside. During a search for firewood, Mr. Zaid Oussaid found a
buried piece of dead tree trunk, but he could not excavate it by hand. With the
use of a pickaxe he was able to pull the wood out of the ground, but he then
noticed beside it in the cavity a flat ellipsoidal, brownish gray rock coated
by glossy translucent crust with anastomozing wrinkle ridges. Upon returning to
his home (at Dwar Ait Gazo, 30 km west of Tagounite), Mr. Oussaid showed the
382 g specimen to Mr. Mohamed Aid, who organized a return trip to the find site
on February 21, 2014, and after a search of the area an additional 50.5 g piece
which fits exactly onto the main stone was found about 50 m away.

[meteorite-list] Cosmochemistry Papers - Future and Support

2014-07-04 Thread karmaka via Meteorite-list
Dear list members,

I do really appreciate this website

http://cosmochemistry-papers.com/

Well done, Dominik! Thank you very much for the time and energy you've invested
into it!

Please read Dominik's post which I've quoted  below.

If you appreciate the website as much as I do, please let Dominik and everybody
know and please consider
actively supporting this website by updating its contents.

I would be willing to participate in updating this website on a part time
basis. Who else is willing to share the work?

Thank you!

Best regards

Martin

Dominik's statement:

The Future of Cosmochemistry Papers is
Unknown[http://cosmochemistry-papers.com/2014/07/04/the-future-of-cosmochemistry-papers-is-unknown/]

This site started in October 2013 as an experiment. Although never advertised
except for an announcement on the MetSoc and the German Mineralogical Society
mailing lists, the site is successful, but judge for yourself. The average
stats are as follows:
Number of weekly abstracts posted: ~15-25  (total until today: 700 –
congratulations to all who read all of them!)
Number of journals currently covered: 21
Monthly unique users: 300
Monthly views: ~2000
Weekly unique users: ~90
Weekly views: ~400
Daily unique users (weekdays): ~25
Daily views (weekdays): ~70-100
Users from Different countries per day: 8-10
Users from 50 countries visited the webpage at least once.
Weeks don’t add up to months and days don’t add up to weeks, as unique users
are reported. Users visiting the webpage more than once a week are counted as
one per week. In addition, 13 followers don’t visit the site, but get the posts
via email. So these need to be added to the stats above.
I started this site as I wished for such a site myself. After almost 10 months,
the site still is an experiment and its continuation is unclear. In any case, I
just wanted to start it. For the moment, I will continue to update it for a
couple more weeks. I will keep this post on top over the next week and would
like to ask whether anyone else likes this page and would be interested in
continuing it. I am happy to provide any further information to anyone who is
interested in taking over. Please also indicate your interest, if you could
imagine participating in this part time, in case a number of people would want
to share the updating process. And please also keep in mind that this should be
a longer time commitment.
However this turns out, it’s been a nice an interesting experiment in all its
facets for about a year, and I enjoyed updating it during this time.
best,  Dominik

I'm very impressed, because it is a very difficult search area!
Very well done!
Congratulations to all those who were involved!
