Re: [meteorite-list] ADS Cottingham

2009-01-30 Thread Goran Axelsson

I haven't spoken up before about multiple ads but it's been close a
couple of times. I have to admit it's a bit annoying when there are a
lot of ads from one seller. If one seller keeps sending multiple ads to
the list it won't swamp the list, but if all sellers starts to do it
then it will become a sales channel, not a meteorite list.

Just because people doesn't speak up it doesn't mean they are happy to
get a lot of ads.

I'm fully aware that sometimes it could be warranted with more than one
message per week but I would like to see that over time it would average
to one ad per week per seller. That ought to be enough.

As for Cottinghams ads, I'm now really tired of them and usually doesn't
even bother to read them as they are so common. That's a bit sad as I
bought one of my finest meteorites from him.
Michael, we all know that you have a lot of meteorites in your ebay
store, you don't need to remind us about it several times per week. Just
tell us when you have something really special or new.
No, I haven't counted ads, it's just the feeling I have that you keep
pushing the same thing time after time. Maybe I'm wrong but I have
decided that I don't have the time to read your ads any longer, there
are more interesting sellers on the list.

I guess that I'm part of that 1% too.

Hello,

I agree with most of what you say. It is good to wait and have patience.

I offer all kinds of sales.

Set prices in my ebay store

10% to 30% off sales, sometimes more.

And 0.99 cents auction about every 2 weeks.

Sometimes items can be bought for less if you wait. Other times there
is no time to wait because it is limited in quantity.

Over all, most of my customers are repeat buyers who know prices go up
and down, but I know they get great deals in the long run and most
probably do the math and know that in the long run they get GREAT
prices from me. Also, it is funny when I have a 30% off sale for
several days and when I have advertised it, but it is the day after
the sale ends that a lot of pieces sell for full price figure that
one out!

I agree with you, Matt. Not all pieces and weights are the same for each
meteorite. There may be only one piece of a certain weight that you want. Also
the pic may show a nicer shape (with some crust or none) or with some
interesting inclusion that the other pieces don't show. Tough to decide whether
to wait or take a chance it'll not be sold before the next sale. Besides, I
admire Michael's dedication. I don't mind paying a few extra bucks ( I usually
select the smaller stuff anyway so there isn't much of a difference.) I've
emailed him with questions in the past and got almost an immediate answer.
Michael is not the only seller I admire. There are others, too, but this thread
is just about him.

Carl

I know this, but I was using the analogy to make a point.

Come on, we all know his stuff is usually on sale for 30 percent
(or more) off the listed prices. So is it a big surprise that if you
pay full price you MAY "lose" money? I thought meteorites were
"special" and not "investments", yet that is what I seem to be hearing
from collectors.

With that said, I do not want to lose money either, but I am careful and very
selective when I buy and at which price I pay.

Meteorites are certainly investments in my opinion and I enjoy them immensely.

Re: [meteorite-list] ADS Cottingham

2009-01-29 Thread Mark Grossman
And here we are talking about meteorites that were purchased on one day, and
a few days later - not a month later - but a few days later - were placed on
sale with discounts of 10 to 20 percent or more.

Under these circumstances, unless someone wants an item really, really
badly, why would they purchase an item when they first see it listed?
Experience shows that the best thing to do is to wait - not buy.

I think it's best when dealers put items up for sale at fair prices, and
then, if after a reasonable period of time, the items do not move, to
advertise for best offers (even though they would have considered the offers
before) or to offer a some sort of discount.

But buying a meteorite on day 1, and then seeing it for sale at up to 30%
less on day 4 or 5, certainly gives a potential buyer reason to pause before
buying again.

Just my thoughts.

Sounds like good advice - if I see any meteorites at Target's, I be sure to
wait for a sale.

There are also some higher end stores that will tell a customer to wait
because the item of interest is going on sale.

Re: [meteorite-list] ADS Cottingham

2009-01-28 Thread michael cottingham

Also, it is funny when I have a 30% off sale for
several days and when I have advertised it, but it is the day after
the sale ends that a lot of pieces sell for full price figure that
one out!

Best Wishes
