Hello Listers The Heritage Auctions is having an auction in a few days where they will be selling some meteorites and I see that some Allende meteorite slices are excepted to sell around $35 to $50 per gram. [meteorite-list] Allende meteorite yields material previously unknown to science
Hi all, Interesting news reported today from Caltech regarding research on the 1969 Allende meteorite: Scientists have discovered a new mineral embedded in a meteorite that fell to Earth over 40 years ago, and it could be among the oldest minerals, formed in the early days of our solar system. The mineral is a type of titanium oxide and has been named panguite, after Pan Gu, the giant from ancient Chinese mythology who established the world by separating yin from yang to create the Earth and the sky. As my Hail Mary, as I've never been to a museum on Villa, let me add this which you won't find Googleable: Pancho Villa's decomposed/petrified skull was removed from his R.I.P. body a few years after his death by fussilade. The head was never found. I have it on several sources that it was thrown in some rocks on the Adargas (?) mountains. Anyway - it's a large iron meteorite locality, I believe for a chunk of Chupaderos. Kindest wishes Doug PS Pancho Villa is like Mexico's Elvis. He, his ghost, and his head, and his two dozen plus wives are everywhere and everyone in the north is related to him that you meet on some days. Hi, I don't understand your intemperance. The suggestion that auctions are inherently scams is bewildering. There are deals to be found at auctionsand objects zealously fought over; an auction house merely makes the market. Please also consider it was the traditional auctions in the mid-90s that resulted in an avalanche of media that created a burst of interest in meteorites---which was among the catalysts to a new generation of hunters. As I said previously, Allende was an anomaly. Hi, After having curated the sale of more than 1000 specimens in traditional auctions since having introduced the auction of meteorites in the mid 90s, I can tell you Mike is 100% correct. There are trends, and there are aberrations---and this is an example of the latter. That is,..for now. ;-) And please don't forget my price received on the Allende is a chunk lower than might otherwise be imagined as I also have to pay a nice chunk to the house. d, On Dec 12, 2011, at 4:28 PM, Galactic Stone Ironworks wrote: Hi Shawn and List, The piece in the auction has King collection provenance, but that does not explain the high closing price. Re: [meteorite-list] Allende meteorite selling for around $40 a gram!!!
In my experience at the big public auctions the smaller exotic items nearly always seem to go for lot more than the market price...especially Lunar meteorites. The only good deals are usually the larger museum quality pieces if you are lucky enough to find one without a high reserve and have deep pockets. Hello Listers, I think Michael Farmer made a good point and it seems his post didnt make it on here yet. This is what he said Allende is one of the most important meteorites on the planet. Extremely undervalued due to the sheer amount which fell. Try getting it today. Not easy. I second that and with over 100's of research articles written on Allende, the discovery of CAI's, and that the oldest material found in the solar system was found from within Allende. This could be a fluke or could be a trend with Allende. Who knows but all I can say is get it while it is still around for a good price :) cause times could be changing. Re: [meteorite-list] Allende meteorite selling for around $40 a gram!!!
Hi Shawn, I attended the Bonham's auction yesterday, and I was indeed shocked by the bidding war over that Allende piece. On the other hand, I was equally shocked by the many other meteorites which went unsold, despite low starting bids in some cases. A 910mg slice of lunar Dhofar 1180 didn't even attract any bids, starting at $500! I should have bought that one Darryl and Mike are right, these results must be aberrations. I am often mystified by auction house sale results, both high and low. Considering the typical 25% buyer's premium (+10% CA sales tax in this case), I don't see how such auctions can offer customers consistent value. We all like to complain about ebay, but by comparison, traditional auction houses just don't look competitive to me at all. Well, according to Gary Allende has a distinct smell to it, i asked him what he could compare it to - seems he wasn't sure. One of the reasons I bought it was to find out what it smells like.. I stuck my nose into the baglet it came in with the meteorite inside, and sniffed away... noticed a scent that reminds me of that lime flavored powder used to make drinks (margarita perhaps). [meteorite-list] Allende and a new mineral called Tistarite......
Hello List, A couple weeks ago I came across a letter on the internet published in the American Mineralogist, Vol 94, pages 841-844, 2009 (here is a link to the letter http://www.its.caltech.edu/~chima/publications/2009_AM_tistarite.pdf ) and the topic was about a new mineral found in Allende, called Tistarite. Last month I purchased an Allende meteorite and since then been fascinated by the thought that Allende is older then dirt, to be more exacted, 4.57 billion years old. And to top it off, Allende has traces of nanodiamonds from near by supernovas, making the fine-grain microscopic particles older then our solar system. Now in 2009 from American Mineralogist I read that scientists have found a new mineral only present in Allende meteorite, which is called Tistarite. My question is how will this new mineral impact Allende meteorite in the science and meteorite communities and what significance will it have on future discoveries for new minerals? Hi Shawn, I doubt it will change the value of Allende, but it is one of the cooler new names for a discovery: The mineral is named after the composition Ti and the word star, implying that this new refractory mineral is among the first solids formed in the solar system. -Martin On Sat, Jan 16, 2010 at 3:02 PM, Shawn Alan photoph...@yahoo.com wrote: Hello List, A couple weeks ago I came across a letter on the internet published in the American Mineralogist, Vol 94, pages 841-844, 2009 (here is a link to the letter http://www.its.caltech.edu/~chima/publications/2009_AM_tistarite.pdf ) and the topic was about a new mineral found in Allende, called Tistarite. Hi Dave and All, Should you talk about the long 'inclusion' in the ~ center of the crossed section (from top almost down to bottom), to me it looks like a clast... Strange shape for a clast I admit as they usually are angular and this one is not really. But as it contains chondrules I think it is. A more scientific opinion should be necessary to have a better idea of what it is as I have not seen anything like that before in Allende as well. Re-2: [meteorite-list] Allende
Sincere, humble apology, Lars, I've been made aware of your situation. (How could I have known?) I would help, if I could. Pete Hi Lars, Pete, and List, Pete, my hat (though I never wear hats) is off to you for your prompt and immediate apology! I would help, if I could. Pete You can, we can. If, and I suppose, the person who made you aware of Lars' situation, is the one I am thinking of, well, if (s)he is willing to coordinate donations again, and there are more than 500 list members, .. I would be willing to donate $10 for an appreciable Allende slice. Appreciable ... ? 500 x 10 = $5,000. This would be one big slice for Lars, bigger than any Allende I own. Even if only 100 list members were willing to donate, say $5.00 or $2.00, the slice, Lars would get would still be something out of this world. Any comments? No, no comments, please! Donate or don't. Christmas is ante portas ;-) Lars, you just overlook this mail, will, you! And if the person who made Pete aware of Lars' situation is out there, (s)he will surely let you know in private how to contact him/her. Re: [meteorite-list] Allende inclusion help!!!
LOL. Thats my ebay ad! The dark inclusion is refered to by Smithsonian's The Allende, Mexico meteor Shower, (Smithsonian Contributions to Earth Sciences -1970 no5 - They even show one on page 32) as a Dark Inclusion. Yep, them Yankee scientists get awefully technical. In the booklet, they show the composition of the Dark inclusion as showing higher than average FeO, and NiS. And half the average FeS. Still, I have no idea what the real mineralogy is... All I know is I recovered it on my 2002 expedition to Chihuahua. -mt On 3 Apr 2005 at 10:09, Tom Knudson wrote: Hey List, this Allende has an inclusion and I really would like to know what it is so I am sending this ebay link, not to show you this neat meteorite, but to try to find out what you all think this inclusion could be, I am dieing of curiosity! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=3 239item=6523135359 rd=1 Thanks, Tom peregrineflier IMCA 6168 http://www.frontiernet.net/~peregrineflier/Peregrineflier.htm http://fstop.proboards24.com/ -- McCartneyTaylor, IMCA 2760 __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hi Tom, McCartneyTaylor, and List, Hey List, this Allende has an inclusion and I really would like to know what it is so I am sending this ebay link, not to show you this neat meteorite, but to try to find out what you all think this inclusion could be, I am dieing of curiosity! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=3239item=6523135359; rd=1 It is either a carbonaceous inclusion, a CO3 - a CO3 carbonaceous chondrite within a CV3 carbonaceous chondrite. Maybe you remember the piece that the Hupes offered on EBay until a few days ago and/or the pieces Eric Olson sold in February/March 2004. .. or, as McCartneyTaylor just wrote: an Allende dark inclusion. Still, I have no idea what the real mineralogy is... HEYMANN D. et al. (1987) Carbon in dark inclusions of the Allende meteorite (Meteoritics 22, 1987, 3-15, excerpt, p.3): Dark inclusions (DI's) are among the major petrographic components of the Allende meteorite; the others being: a fine-grained matrix of predominantly olivine, chondrules, and irregular inclusions. DI's have also been called fine- grained xenoliths. Their dimensions can be millimeters, and even centimeters. The larger DI's can usually be recognized easily on cut surfaces of the Allende meteorite because they appear darker than their surrounding areas, and are often poor in chondrules or large irregular inclusions. Fruland, Clanton, and Walton (1977) recognized three types of DI's: (1) a black fine-grained matrix with few clasts and rare chondrules, (2) a discontinuous, black, fine-grained matrix with abundant clasts and chondrules, and (3) densely packed clasts and chondrules with a small percentage of discontinuous interstitial matrix. Fruland (1978) reports SEM petrography on two lensoidal DI's: both display sharp boundaries with the lighter Allende matrix; one has an approximately 60 µm wide, but discontinuous rim of Ca-rich silicates. Fruland notes that these two DI's *consist primarily of silicates, metal, and sulfides*, with grain sizes up to about 40 µm; hence, *coarser than matrix*. Fruland also notes: Many clasts have a *dark 'accretionary' halo*. Three distinct components can be recognized: finegrained black matrix (~60%), chondrules (~30%), and irregular white aggregates (~10%). The matrix consists almost entirely of iron-rich olivine (average 50% Fe2SiO4), with minor amounts of troilite, pentlandite, and taenite, rendered opaque by dispersed carbonaceous material. Most of the chondrules are magnesium-rich, and consist of olivine (average 9% Fe2SiO4) with minor amounts of clinoenstatite and some glass; a few chondrules are rich in calcium and aluminum, and are made up largely of anorthite, gehlenite, augite, and spinel. The irregular aggregates are also rich in calcium and aluminum, and contain anorthite, gehlenite, augite, spinel, nepheline, grossular, and sodalite (the last two minerals have not previously been recorded from meteorites). Complete chemical analyses have been made of the bulk meteorite, a dark inclusion, the matrix, a chondrule concentrate, two individual chondrules, and a single aggregate." [meteorite-list] Allende, the new drug of 2005?
Hello List, serious question here! Ever since my divorce, I would describe myself as a pretty miserable person, always depressed, never happy and always in a mad mood. I love being married, and fear being alone the rest of my life! My daughter can tell you how much it sucks to be around me, at least most of the time. We have a great relationship and have gotten pretty darn close over the last year, but I am still no fun to be around. Anyways, one day she asked what was wrong with me, I asked what do you mean. She said I seemed so happy, cheerful. joyful, like I was happy or something. I had not noticed, but I was in an unusually good mood and had no explanation for it, but insured her I would be back to normal soon. That night, my sinuses where all messed up and I blew my nose ( Sick, I know, but we all do it) , only to find black! I knew then, what happened to all the dust that was flying around when I dry cut an Allende earlier that day. I figured my good mood must have come from my snorting a gram or two of allende dust. With all the ingredients in Allende, is it possible there is something in there that could work as an anti-depressant? Meteorites have always made me happy and when I know I have one on the way, it gives me something to look forward to, and makes my happy, but not like Allende Dust Thanks, Tom peregrineflier IMCA 6168 http://www.frontiernet.net/~peregrineflier/Peregrineflier.htm http://fstop.proboards24.com/ __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hi, Got a great idea for what to do with all that meteorite cutting dust. There may be a great commercial opportunity here, people. People pay high prices for organic produce. People pay high prices for crystals and mysterious space talismans like broken Thailand tektites and chips of moldavite. Why not combine these two ideas into the niche market gimmick of all time?! Grow hydroponic vegetables where the minerals and salts that have to be added to hydroponic tanks is 100% METEORITE DUST, and you have, Yes, Friends! That's Right! EXTRATERRESTRIAL ORGANIC VEGETABLES Organic Produce From Outer Space! What do you think people would pay for Extraterrestrial Tomatoes?! Since the quantities available would be very small, I think you could charge pretty much anything you wanted -- $100 per pound (more for Vine Ripened Extraterrestrial Tomatoes), $200 per pound? Or maybe I should say -- The Sky's The Limit! Sterling Webb Nicholas Gessler wrote: Send me the dust. I'm saving it for a rainy day (no, strike that, it's raining). Plant a seed in the dust and water it with distilled water. See if the seed manages to grow. I'd like to see that experiment done. (Maybe even do it with more than one type of stony-- a ordinary chondrite and a carbonaceous, for example). The tiny asparagus and potato plants were grown in soil taken from Martian meteorites which landed on Earth thousands of years ago. The scientific breakthrough raises hopes that humans may one day be able to colonise the Red Planet. Lincoln University chemistry research professor Dr Michael Mautner has carried out the vegetable-growing experiments in soil taken from the Dar al Gani 476 meteorite which was found in the Sahara Desert in Libya in 1998, and the Murchison meteorite discovered in Australia in 1969. Dr Mautner says the Martian soil showed surprisingly high levels of phosphate, ideal for growing healthy vegetables, the New Zealand Herald reports. He is now convinced that one day, humans will live on Mars. Dr Mautner said: If we build colonies in space we will have to grow plants for food so obviously we need to know the soil can support that. Everyone knows the future is out there in space, so it's exciting. Space-based soils could potentially support future human expansion in the solar system. I wouldn't say very soon, but in a few centuries. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Allende, the new drug of 2005?
Hi, Darren, List Actually, this experiment has been done over and over. Besides the recent Martian trial Darren referred to, it has been done many times with lunar regolith in years past. (Why don't they just call it soil? It's Lunar soil, dammit!) Plants are not fussy. They will grow just fine on Mars. They will grow just fine on the Moon. They will probably grow just fine on the Moons of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and so forth. They do need enough sunlight, of course, and they have an emotional attachment to gravity. (How else to know which way is up?) And it helps if it's warm enough. Just pulverize the surface, throw up a one mill air cover, pump in the CO2 and nitrogen, spray it down with the hose, and get ready to start weeding. Ooops! They won't be weeds unless we bring them ourselves. Not a bad deal. I'm sure Lunar agriculture will be big business some day. 100% Absolute Guaranteed Pollution Free Organic Lunar Produce! With no smoke stacks on the Moon, how could it be otherwise? And any trace elements that are missing in the extraterrestrial environment can easily be added. You gardeners out there know you can buy rock flour, as it's called, for your garden. Deaf Smith County in Texas does a fine business right now grinding up the many stones that litter the Texas landscape and selling the flour. Robert Heinlein wrote a nice little novel about a family of rock farmers on Ganymede back in the 1950's. Turns out there's probably too much ice on Ganymede for that, but it was well-worked out for the knowledge of the day. So, if we give Mars a little thicker atmosphere, warm it up a bit, and plant crops, do you suppose we'll have to bring water to the fields? Guess so. Maybe we could dig some canals... You might also want to write something like Rare, Beautiful, etc. Look at Mike Farmer's or the Hupes' EBay items. These people invite their potential buyers to buy one of their unique, rare, specimens, to buy one of their there won't be much to go around specimens, etc. The other end of the line would be something like Dean's invitation to buy the ugliest meteorite in the world :-) .. and don't forget there are still two days and 23 hours left. Some bidders wait until the very last moment to get something at rock bottom prices. .. and there is a lot of Allende material. .. and there are quite a few very competitive items on EBay at the moment. [meteorite-list] Allende Meteorite Reveals Signs of Life from Space
http://dsc.discovery.com/news/afp/20030623/meteorite.html Meteorite Reveals Signs of Life from Space By Danny Kingsley Discovery Channel News June 26, 2003 Unique carbon building blocks of life called fullerenes did indeed crash to Earth in meteorites, new British research has found. The work by Peter Harris from Reading University has provided the first direct evidence of fullerenes - a special type of carbon molecule associated with the origins of life - in meteorite samples. The analysis of samples from the Allende meteorite which fell on Mexico in 1969 is published this week online in the Proceedings of the Royal Society. Fullerenes are a type of carbon molecule first discovered in the mid-1980s, the most famous of which is the buckyball, which is a closed spherical molecule the shape of a soccer ball. The fullerenes discovered by Harris and colleagues were completely closed and relatively large, containing around 6,000 to 10,000 carbon atoms each, and with a generally disordered structure. Since the Allende meteorite has been shown to have formed at the same time as our solar system's planets, the findings, which show fullerenes are capable of surviving for billions of years in space, provide a further step towards understanding where life came from. One possibility for where the organic building blocks for life came from is that they came from space, said Dr Jeremy Bailey from the Anglo Australian Observatory in Sydney. Not so much that life itself came from space, but the organic molecules that you need to make the primordial soup could have come from space. It's certainly an interesting result, but not a surprising one, Bailey told ABC Science Online. People have generally believed there are fullerenes in space and it's not surprising that you find them in these meteorites because there are plenty of other organic molecules in the meteorites. The findings also support previous claims by astrobiologist Luann Becker at the University of Washington in Seattle, that fullerenes were present in carbonaceous material from meteorites. Her work was considered controversial because of methods she used to identify the fullerenes - laser desorption mass spectroscopy - could have modified the carbon samples, creating the fullerene compounds it was supposed to be finding. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Allende Inclusions?
Hey tom. It's probably light green olivine that crystallized with other pre-solar nebular material, silicates in particular- some of which have no color hue. I've seen many different color hues in my Allende slice and the fascinating and sometimes perfect chondrules when observing them under an American Optical 1000x microscope- rotated down to 100x of course. There's a great book with a section on chondrules alone called (Brazilian Meteorites)and you can get it from: Bethany Sciences (Ron Farrell), New Haven ,CT. . He sold me my first meteorite, Allende, a 156gram 95% fusion crust and a 5gr. slice so that I could better see the chondrules. The whole chondrite has a 1/2in. piece cracked off of it from impacting a widows porch roof. Scared her to death when the rest of the stones came in hypersonic and rained down on(Village Of Allende). Last told, she still has a 10kilo Allende with a beautiful, undamaged, black skin buried on her farm 2ft. down in a plastic trash bag. Imagine a slice off of a 10 kilo Allende , and all the calcium/aluminum and other inclusions, like Gold, Silver, Brass balls- sorry, meant chondrules:), lets not go back there, please! An (e.g.) from the book that I'm pretty sure some of us collectors of nebular fragmented accretions (meteorites), is the description of Chondrule Textures: 1-Porphyritic 2-Barred and Rimmed 3-Excentro-Radial and 4-Granular Porphyritic. It took me 3 years before I found out that Chondrules were formed by the spontaneous crystallization of freely-floating highly-supercooled droplets of melt- in my opinion the best description that everybody can visualize- not my description, I forget where I copied it from? The've found chondrules with tiny nickel/iron cores. Then you throw at your friends or family that the Earth is nothing but a MACRO -CHONDRULE and you've lost'em. Hey, I get excited about free-floating spheres, especially when they have names, you know what I mean? Sorry about the lengthy response Tom. [meteorite-list] Allende CAI origins
Hullo Listees Well, having been in hospital for the past few days, and having the most profoundly unpleasant procedure performed on me (email me offlist if interested - I have no pride!!) I have had plenty of time to lie in bed, woozy on morphine, read some stuff relating to the origin of CAIs and I have come to the conclusion that I am still confused as to what the current received knowledge is as to the origin of these bodies. As far as I can tell they were either blown into the protosolar nebula by a nearby supernova (what evidence? Radiometric age? and so on) or they were amongst the first solids to precipitate out of the protoplanetary disk and were blown outwards from the Sun to the outer reaches of the newly formed solar system by solar winds. Any thoughts? Are they measurably older than the matrix and chondrules we find?
