The seller that Zsolt warned us about is much more dangerous to the
unwary. While some fakes are obvious, a seller who can fool Martin,
Zsolt, and other knowledgeable dealers is to be avoided at all costs.
They mix just enough real specimens in with the fakes to lend
credibility to their bogus offerings. One is real, the next is fake.
Those are the types of sellers we need to keep an eye on. Thanks
again to Zsolt for exposing that scammer.

This Chinese guy with the dirty fingernails holding his CK4
meteorite is pretty obvious. But, if anyone wants a Lop Nur CK4, I
have a driveway full of them. Wait, is Lop Nut similar to the Loc
Nar? Are they related? If so, definitely avoid! ;)

No, you did not question my material specifically, but you painted a
non-flattering picture in very broad strokes. I am sure the unspoken
implication was there, as you have gone on the record in the past as
not being a fan of me, my crumbs, my coupon codes, and my ads.
Personally, I have never had an issue with you. We have never had any
dealings, good or bad. We just seem to cross wires on the List from
time to time.

If I feel a need to test a specimen, then I don't buy it. If I don't
trust my source well enough to take their specimen at face value, then
I don't want it. I assume many buyers feel the same way, dealer or
collector.

There are some sellers out there (some on eBay), that I wouldn't buy
from if they were the last meteorite dealer on Earth. Not because
they have passed off bogus crumbs, but because they have passed off
bogus whole stones or larger fakes. There are not many dealers who
test every stone of every batch of material they buy. Some do. Many
do not. How many dealers buy a few kilos of NWA 869 from Morocco and
then submit samples of that material for testing before reselling it?
Ditto for almost any such material on the market. Chergach? Prove
it. Bassi? Prove it. Oum Dreyga? Prove it. Zag? El Hammami? Ash
Creek? Buzzard Coulee?

If I spend $5 on a crumb and it turns out to be driveway dirt, then I
got burned. If I paid $100 or $500 or $5000 for a specimen for North
American fall and it turns out to be a North African find, then I am
sorry as hell.

Who is selling fake crumbs besides one or two clowns on eBay? There
are some bogus planetary displays going around and we are well aware
of them - their identities have been exposed due to diligence from the
community. Are there others who are operating in such numbers and
volume that they threaten the integrity of the collector's market and
the viability of research collections? Does NASA or ASU have some NWA
in their cabinets masquerading as Tagish Lake? Did someone slip some
Jbilet Winselwan into the Murchison jar?

I hear a lot of things. I hear stuff about shady deals and shady
operators. And I haven't heard jack about anyone dealing in bogus
crumbs. It sounds like fear-mongering to me.

The IMCA has enough to worry about without taking on the
responsibility for policing the market's Bessey Specks. That's it, I
think we should blame Dean. It's all his fault. LOL. ;)

I collect crumbs. I have more crumbs than Pepperidge Farm. If people
want genuine crumbs that are what the label says they are, they can
come to me. There are a few more crumb-mongers who are legit. I
won't name names, but they are probably reading this with interest,
because that picture you painted includes them also - not by name, but
by implication.

That's all. This is silly. I'll shut up.

the viability of research collections?

Bill - Put your money where your mouth is. I have 100 localities of
crumbs. Test every single one of them and post the results publicly.
I'll give you a killer one-time discount deal for the purposes of
testing. Use an XRF gun, microprobe, SEM, nickel test, magnetic
susceptibility, or whatever method you choose. Just because you have a
crazy bias against people who collect micromounts (and trade in them),
doesn't give you any authority to make blanket judgements.

Yes, buyers should always beware, and this is especially true with
micro-crumbs that are not easily identified in a visual manner. If
somebody wants a genuine speck of something rare, they know where to
go. There are a few of us who are well-known and our sources are
well-known. I get my crumbs from many of the same big dealers that

2014-10-22 Thread Daniel Noyes via Meteorite-list
Hi All,

Do wonders never cease. The blue hue is interesting, but if it is a
lunar, then I'm Mickey Mouse! Maybe it is another one of those Magic
Moon rocks, but in this case it turns blue when you flash it with a
camera.

Speaking of which...P. T. Barnum was right and with the holiday season
coming up, there will be those that are naïve and buy something as a
gift that is far from what they thought. Case in point, I have tried
multiple times to get ebay to address this listing that has been on
there for many months:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/231011500778?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Judging from the current listing, they have sold 13 of these magic moon
rock kits in this round alone. Being a novelty item and cheap price is
irrelevant. It's bad. I have submitted complaints several times in the
ebay report an item procedure, pointing out that to list it in the
title as Moon rocks and then do nothing in the description to
substantiate the claim is bogus, especially when they are nothing of the
sort. Ebay has done zip in response. Maybe someone more persuasive can
get eBay's attention. Notes to the seller go unanswered. The only magic
is their ability to trick the unsuspecting!

Daniel

Re: [meteorite-list] Ebay Again!

2014-10-22 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks via Meteorite-list
Hi Folks,

Over the years, going back into the List archive, you will see
intermittent spurts of vigilance for these fakes, especially in
regards to eBay listings. Frankly, there are just too many different
sellers and too many different fakes to police them all. eBay does
not help in most cases and you are generally wasting your time trying
to get eBay to make enforcement on their end work. That leaves us on
the outside, and most of us are too busy with life to take on the
added work of being eBay-Cop for meteorwrongs. It is also a thankless
job if one chooses to accept the work - lots of pissed off or trollish
sellers who do not give a damn and the sucker buyers are born every
minute. The obvious fakes are not really the true problem.

The misrepresented meteorites are the biggest threat to market and
collections integrity in my opinion. Selling a piece obvious of coal
or slag as a meteorite is usually a one-off scam by some opportunistic
yahoo - they use disposable eBay accounts and it's like playing
whack-a-mole to keep them in check. Truthfully, they cannot be
stopped entirely - it's buyer beware. A modest amount of homework
before buying will pay big dividends with any newbie buyer.

The bigger and more insidious threat is fallen dealers operating in
the relative safety of eBay - they put out mislabeled or
misrepresented meteorites. They are real meteorites, but not the type
or locality being offered. Is that an Ash Creek or a Chergach? Is
that a Buzzard Coulee or a fresh-looking Bassikounou? Is that really
a Chelyabinsk or a Oum Dreyga? Some are easy to spot and avoid -
others can be tricky to the eye with clever camera-work and lighting.

The best advice for eBay newbies - know your seller. If you do not,
then find someone who does and ask them.

Best regards,

MikeG

On the bright side, it is an interesting piece of leaverite.

Re: [meteorite-list] Ebay, again!

2014-10-01 Thread Raremeteorites via Meteorite-list
The guy selling this thing is probably the same patron at the Old Town
Saloon here in Nevada that was crying about being stocked by a massive
flying saucer everywhere he goes. He claims to have trapped a baby flying
saucer out in the desert under a deadfall baited with Jack Daniels an
pepperoni logs. He reported to the small crowd that the mother ship has been
bothering every since. He said that he hit the UFO over the head with a
shovel one time and sent it packing with hits tail between its legs but it
keeps coming back. The locals here were not all that impressed with his
story but he was insistent.

It is obvious that UFO Conventions, Jack Daniels and the Mohave desert don't
mix!
