The seller that Zsolt warned us about is much more dangerous to the unwary. While some fakes are obvious, a seller who can fool Martin, Zsolt, and other knowledgeable dealers is to be avoided at all costs. They mix just enough real specimens in with the fakes to lend credibility to their bogus offerings. One is real, the next is fake. Those are the types of sellers we need to keep an eye on. Thanks again to Zsolt for exposing that scammer. This Chinese guy with the dirty fingernails holding his CK4 meteorite is pretty obvious. But, if anyone wants a Lop Nur CK4, I have a driveway full of them. Wait, is Lop Nut similar to the Loc Nar? Are they related? Hi All, Do wonders never cease. The blue hue is interesting, but if it is a lunar, then I'm Mickey Mouse! Maybe it is another one of those Magic Moon rocks, but in this case it turns blue when you flash it with a camera. Speaking of which...P. T. Barnum was right and with the holiday season coming up, there will be those that are naïve and buy something as a gift that is far from what they thought. Case in point, I have tried multiple times to get ebay to address this listing that has been on there for many months: http://www.ebay.com/itm/231011500778?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Judging from the current listing, they have sold 13 of these magic moon rock kits in this round alone. Being a novelty item and cheap price is irrelevant. It's bad. I have submitted complaints several times in the ebay report an item procedure, pointing out that to list it in the title as Moon rocks and then do nothing in the description to substantiate the claim is bogus, especially when they are nothing of the sort. Ebay has done zip in response. Maybe someone more persuasive can get eBay's attention. Notes to the seller go unanswered. The only magic is their ability to trick the unsuspecting! Re: [meteorite-list] Ebay Again!
Hi Folks, Over the years, going back into the List archive, you will see intermittent spurts of vigilance for these fakes, especially in regards to eBay listings. Frankly, there are just too many different sellers and too many different fakes to police them all. eBay does not help in most cases and you are generally wasting your time trying to get eBay to make enforcement on their end work. That leaves us on the outside, and most of us are too busy with life to take on the added work of being eBay-Cop for meteorwrongs. It is also a thankless job if one chooses to accept the work - lots of pissed off or trollish sellers who do not give a damn and the sucker buyers are born every minute. The obvious fakes are not really the true problem. The misrepresented meteorites are the biggest threat to market and collections integrity in my opinion. Selling a piece obvious of coal or slag as a meteorite is usually a one-off scam by some opportunistic yahoo - they use disposable eBay accounts and it's like playing whack-a-mole to keep them in check. Truthfully, they cannot be stopped entirely - it's buyer beware. A modest amount of homework before buying will pay big dividends with any newbie buyer. The bigger and more insidious threat is fallen dealers operating in the relative safety of eBay - they put out mislabeled or misrepresented meteorites. They are real meteorites, but not the type or locality being offered. Is that an Ash Creek or a Chergach? Is that a Buzzard Coulee or a fresh-looking Bassikounou? Is that really a Chelyabinsk or a Oum Dreyga? Some are easy to spot and avoid - others can be tricky to the eye with clever camera-work and lighting. The best advice for eBay newbies - know your seller. If you do not, then find someone who does and ask them. These rocks are bituminous coal that fell off passing trains. I live right next to where these were collected (Newark, Ohio), and the old railroad followed the creek. I've seen this material myself many times. I informed the seller of this, and here's his reply: lol if you think this is coal ur a mor on Can't argue with that. Exactly what I thought and stated, a grinder cicle! The problem is that this slag will often test positive for nickel. Ford motor company used a good amount of nickel in their FE big block engines. Many of these engines were melted down, recycled and ground on. Unless a flying saucer is equipped with a Ford big block engine, then these claims of extraterrestrial origin are invalid. The guy selling this thing is probably the same patron at the Old Town Saloon here in Nevada that was crying about being stocked by a massive flying saucer everywhere he goes. He claims to have trapped a baby flying saucer out in the desert under a deadfall baited with Jack Daniels an pepperoni logs. He reported to the small crowd that the mother ship has been bothering every since. He said that he hit the UFO over the head with a shovel one time and sent it packing with hits tail between its legs but it keeps coming back. The locals here were not all that impressed with his story but he was insistent. It is obvious that UFO Conventions, Jack Daniels and the Mohave desert don't mix! - Original Message - From: rickm...@earthlink.net To: Raremeteorites raremeteori...@centurylink.net; meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Wednesday, October 01, 2014 6:42 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Ebay, again! Wow! Maybe I should have kept all of the ones that I knocked off of the chop saw. I'd gladly have sold them for one-tenth of the asking price in this auction! This is a metal cicle that spalled off of a grinder in a machine shop. The other thing was here in Laughlin, NV at a UFO convention where Bob White got all the free drinks he could handle. Wait a minute; Drinks are served for free here at any casino, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in Laughlin. All you have to do is ask. Bench mounted grinding wheel slag!!! I've seen many, during machine shop clean ups.. Since I don't want it to become contaminated I don't keep it in my display cabinets amongst the other meteorites but prefer to watch it rusting away in my sterile backyard. It is quite obvious that these objects are created in the mysterious underworld of Mars as a secret weapon for Gandalf who occasionally throws them in our direction to remind us that he's still alive, and NOT during welding processes as they happen every day on earth by the thousands. [meteorite-list] Ebay, Again!
Hello, Yes, back to meteorites. Maybe! This Ebayer has just been brought to my attention: _http://shop.ebay.com/hroller22/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562_ (http://shop.ebay.com/hroller22/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562) He is selling a lot of Campos, odd ones with only 11% iron! I don't believe anyone of them has ever been in space. Would anyone of you know that seller? He is in Las Vegas, so maybe one of you Las Vegas meteorite-experts might like to talk to him about real meteorites. Count Deiro? you said you were bored!!! ;-) Good luck. Anne M. Anne and all, This first listed specimen looks a lot like Snowflake Obsidian notice the gray oval spots on it in one of the 3 photos. Some of the other specimens look like slag also. He's the High Roller and has many feedback on his Campo and some Wabar iron. All the best!
