Depending on the hall's location, there might be an open Wi-Fi network in an adjacent building or business. Unencrypted public networks are all over the place now. Hotels, McDonalds, Starbucks, even some auto mechanic shops have it. Michael, setting up a Facebook page as Richard and MikeG suggested is a good idea. It will bring even more people to the auction via the web. Youtube should be able to host the streaming feed. I was contacted off list by a member who may want anonymity And I checked out Utube on how to live stream Video to net. Three things needed: 1) Quality viedo camera and mike (I HAVE) 2) Quality Tripod (I HAVE) 3) Quality (high speed) laptop with internet connection (I do NOT have at this time) 4) Free website sign up (I do NOT personally have time right now) 5) Do a few practice runs (ibid) If anyone on the list has a high speed laptop with Internet connect capability AND is willing to do this, I Would make it worth your time - which is all that is required If you have the above (I have the camera and a macho tripod video camera if you don't) - please contact me off list to discuss possibility of doing it this year. Re: [meteorite-list] LIVE video feed of the auction
Ruben, a Broadband connection through Verizon Wireless, or another carrier will work. There might be some lag, but the speeds are fast enough to stream low resolution audio/video. Bandwidth or data charges might apply depending on carriers. WiFi of course would be good but might not be reliable for streaming video, depends again on the strength of signal and speed of the connection. A direct connection to a 10MBS (or faster) land line broadband connection is ideal. Hi, Eric, I was using WiFi when you viewed the live feed, so if the strength is sufficient it will work. However, a direct connection is better no doubt. Re: [meteorite-list] LIVE video feed of the auction??? Please?
Hi List, Some of you know that I am familiar with auctions. Those of you who have auction lots consigned to this sale should be behind this scheme 1000%. In fact, it would be worth your sharing what expense there would be for setting up the hardware and access. If someone can come up with how to handle the rapid onlibe bidding, this idea would be a real bell ringer. One other method of absentee bidding is, of course, to give Michael your max bids and let him bid on your behalf, but Michael and I can tell you how hard that is to do fairly. Probably the way I would use would be to send my agent to the auction and have me on cell throughout. Whatever, it would be cool for you consignors...and Michael... to have the maximum number of bidders participate. Sorry buyers :0) Have fun, Count Deiro IMCA 3536 -Original Message- From: Galactic Stone Ironworks meteoritem...@gmail.com Sent: Jan 21, 2011 10:33 AM To: Richard Montgomery rickm...@earthlink.net Cc: Michael Blood mlbl...@cox.net, Jeff Kuyken i...@meteorites.com.au, Count Deiro countde...@earthlink.net, Shawn Alan photoph...@yahoo.com, Meteorite List meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] LIVE video feed of the auction??? Please? Hi Folks, The idea was first mentioned about 2 or 3 years ago, and there were some initial indications that it might happen, but it never materialized. Now, the technology has advanced to the point that a live video feed is very easy. An internet connection at the facility might not even be necessary, if the feed is broadcast via cellular internet via a smartphone. One could put a smartphone on a cradle or easel, point it at the action and just let it sit while it streams to the web. I don't know the particulars because I am a luddite without a smartphone, but it sounds doable from everything I had heard about the technology. If the expense cellular airtime is an issue, I'm sure some homebodies like myself would be happy to subsidize the expense. Every year at the annual NEAF telescope/astronomy show, several vendors utilize live video feeds for promotional and entertainment purposes - broadcasting live via streaming webcam showing the events, presentations, speakers, etc. It's a good way to attend the event vicariously through others. Of course, the NEAF facility has internet, so that makes it easier. From a bidding standpoint, it might encourage absentee bids. If my memory serves me right I think it was Gary Fujihara who was keeping us updated during the auction via FaceBook last year. It was very interesting for those of us who could not be there in person so the idea certainly has merit. Please? MikeG, Michael and Listers, I think it would be a great idea to broadcast the auction via the internet. All Michael would need is a yahoo, AOL, or Skye account and a computer with a cam and a mic and there you go. He could broadcast that and then put out a post on the screen name and when people wanted to view the video, all someone has to do is allow that user to see the video. This is a great idea MikeG and hope Michael or someone else would be able to do this at the auction. For I wont be going to the Gem show and I think auctions are the best to watch and bid on. I know I would be watching for sure if someone sets this up and I think alot of other Listers too. Or the live feed could even come from someones website if they have the ability to do that. Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ author ] Hi Michael, Greg and List, Great idea on the mystery box. I love it. :) It reminds me of the episode of Family Guy where Peter is offered his choice of a free boat or the mystery box. And Peter chooses the Mystery Box while stating - the boat is a boat, but the mystery box could be anything, even a boat! I bet this box has something better than tickets to Improv inside. ;) BTW - Michael, does the auction venue have Wi-Fi or internet access? I bet many people would enjoy watching a live video feed of the auction or perhaps some live snippets of the action, interviews, etc. Would it be possible to set up a streaming video feed on a laptop or smartphone and broadcast this feed live to the internet? Re: [meteorite-list] LIVE video feed of the auction???
Re: [meteorite-list] LIVE video feed of the auction??? Please?
It's not as easy as it sounds. Even though you can stream live video for one person from one camera, it's a whole other story to stream to a lot of potential viewers at once. Most Commercial IP cameras can serve up video for a few viewers at the same time but once it gets to 10 or more at a time per camera, it starts to draw a lot of resources that the camera can't deliver. Not to mention that a each viewer will draw at least 2Mbps to view a decent video. Less if you don't want high definition. If a video server was installed and the camera streamed to the video server, the amount of potential viewers would then depend on that server's resources and then the bandwidth needs to be there. For what it's worth. Hi all, http://www.w5kub.com/ has done this for the past few years at amateur radio shows. I've enjoyed watching W5KUB's feed over the past couple of years. He even does the feed while making the driving trip. If anyone can provide good information on how to do it, it would be him. Just an FYI. WAY over my head though:-) Rod Chastain --- On Fri, 1/21/11, Guenther abe.guent...@mnsi.net wrote: From: Guenther abe.guent...@mnsi.net Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] LIVE video feed of the auction???
