Re: [meteorite-list] New Met Bulletin Approvals - 31 OC's and a Martian
Hi Marcin and List, I agree. Although, one cannot deny the extreme scientific value of weathered H-chondrites. ;) LOL I am one of the guilty parties though. I have a 10g OC classified NWA 6696. However, I was suspected the stone was a CR2 when I sent it off. Had I known it was an OC, I would not have bothered. On the plus side, it was a type-3 (LL3.6). Re: [meteorite-list] New Met Bulletin Approvals - new Czech meteorites
Hi Gary, Yes, 20 years seems a bit short for W3. I know it rains a lot in Czech Republic -- more than Roosevelt County!, but here are some estimates of the terrestrial ages of the weathering grades taken from Wlotzka, F., Meteoritics, vol. 28, no. 3, volume 28, page 460-460: A correlation between these weathering grades and the terrestrial ages was shown for meteorite finds from Roosevelt County, New Mexico [1]. In these climatic conditions the weathering grades W2 to W6 develop in the following times: W2, 5000 to 15,000 yr; W3, 15,000 to 30,000 yr; W4, 20,000 to 35,000 yr; W5 and W6, 30,000 to 45,000 yr. Similar terrestrial ages were found for chondrites of these weathering grades from the Lybian and Algerian Sahara [2,3]. Antarctic meteorite finds weather much more slowly. A check of 53 Antarctic ordinary chondrites (of hand specimen weathering categories A to C) showed only 9 of grade W2, the rest being W1. Among the W1s is ALHA77278 (category A) with a terrestrial age of 320,000 yr Best regards, Carl Agee PS: we don't what the climate was like in Roosevelt Co. 30,000 years ago, maybe it was wetter too! Because almost twenty years had passed, there can be no assurance that the recovered pieces are associated with the witnessed sightings. Additionally, Benesov (a) is an LL3.5 and Benesov (b) is an H5 and were found on the same day 250m apart, both with a weathering grade of W3. Characteristics are Weathered fragments lacking fusion crust. The meteorites resemble the terrestrial stones and slag found in the field. To me, this implies that the recovered pieces have a terrestrial age greater than 20 years. gary On Feb 21, 2012, at 6:18 AM, Jan Woreczko - www.meteoritica.eu wrote: Ha Why are these findings are not classified as a falls? Re: [meteorite-list] New Met Bulletin approvals
Hi John all, For those of you who may not be aware, the Met Bull has a great RSS feed where new approvals come through automatically. It's a great service. http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/meteorite-rss.php Cheers, Jeff Kuyken Meteorites Australia www.meteorites.com.au President - I.M.C.A. As i have 25 or so UNWA's and almost always check the Met Bull daily i did miss this one. I am lucky enough to have two today, 6349-5.32g and 6709-5.59g, and wish to thank Stefan Martin for my good luck. As well, i thank the big Kahuna (Gary) for 2 other unwa's i purchased from him that were classified, 6573-1.39g and 6575-5.61g. I hope others had good luck today and everyday of their anticipated acceptance of their Unwa's. Some of these are rare types. http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?sea=sfor=namesants=falls=vali ds=stype=containslrec=50map=gebrowse=country=Allsrt=namecateg=Allmbl ist=Allrect=phot=snew=1pnt=Normal%20tabledr=page=0 * Galactic Stone Ironworks - Meteorites Amber (Michael Gilmer) Website - http://www.galactic-stone.com Facebook - http://tinyurl.com/42h79my News Feed - http://www.galactic-stone.com/rss/126516 Twitter - http://twitter.com/galacticstone *** __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] New Met Bulletin Approvals - Question about the Tilde ~
Hi Gang, Several new meteorites were added to the Met Bulletin yesterday. Many of these have something new I have never seen before. There is a ~ (tilde) in the type. For example - Acfer 393 (H~6) - obvious this means the petrologic type is approximately 6, but how/why is this being used in the nomenclature? Were stones like this ambiguous in some way and the exact type could not be determined? Or, is this some new naming convention we will see more of? Here is a link to the new meteorites - http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?sea=%2Asfor=namesants=falls=valids=stype=containslrec=50map=gebrowse=country=Allsrt=namecateg=Allmblist=Allrect=phot=snew=2pnt=Normal%20tabledr=page=0 All of them, except for two, have this tilde in the type. Re: [meteorite-list] New Met Bulletin Approvals - Question about the Tilde ~
Actually, there are hundreds of these from the last 5 years. They are all equilibrated ordinary chondrites classified by magnetic susceptibility. Because no thin section was prepared, the petrologic type is fairly uncertain. Actually, if there is a lot of weathering, even the chemical group can be more uncertain than usual.
