I sure wish there was the interest in the actual meteorites recovered or

I do love the amount of flair in international meteorite names.

It reflects the global variety of the 'meteorite world' we

Maybe we should rather talk about the most inspiring

Or invent, for fun, new additional and inofficial names

Just an idea.

Mike:

The answer to your question is Answer (Australia). If that Angers
(France) you, then Fukue (Japan) and the Fukang horse you rode in on! I
like my meteorites smothered in Los Sauces (Argentina, 997kg) and
garnished with a Mu Onion alusta. But my favorite silly meteorite name is:
Un-named (Australia).

Hi List,

In your opinion, what is the silliest meteorite name?

Git Git. (sounds like someone shoo'ing away a stray dog)

Camel Donga, Billy Goat Donga (and all Dongas for that matter!)

I am sure there are many more that I am forgetting at the moment.

Anyone?

Best regards,

MikeG

Martin and Bill:

My 6 year old respectfully disagrees! She laughs at the Australian
names

like Milly Milly, Laundry Rockhole, and Kittakittaooloo. She also likes
Fuzzy Creek, Elephant Moraine, Two Buttes, Belly River, Lumpkin,
Cartoonkana, Bununu, and Muleshoe.

Hello Bill and list member,

I don't see how any are actually silly. (Bill)

I agree with you, Bill!

I do love the amount of flair in international meteorite names.

It reflects the global variety of the 'meteorite world' we
list members do actually live in.

Maybe we should rather talk about the most inspiring
or inspired names.

Or invent, for fun, new additional and inofficial names
(depending on structure of matrix, crust or shape of the meteorite
etc.) for

the
somehow 'austere' NWA numbers.

Just an idea.

Best wishes to all of you

Martin

Needmore seems to be kind of universal meteorite name, Anne. Sometimes,
after a glimpse in your portemonnaie, it changes towards E.A. Poe's poem

[meteorite-list] Silly-sounding Meteorite Names

2011-09-02 Thread dorifry
Mayday, Mayday, Menow' Needmore meteorites. I'll sail my Skiff
down the Little River at Dawn and pay a Ransom in Loot if I have to.
I Felt it's an Enigma, but I Grant you, the Navajo Old Woman
named Dora Rosario likes to read Thoreau and Ulysses while viewing
Ed Hopper, Toulouse Latrec and Vincent Van Gogh watercolors at her
Social Circle. I'll ride my Bronco named Pep with a Silver Bell or
Bells on, to the Rodeo, stopping only to Pooposo often. If you want to
fight about it, meet me under the Oak Lone Tree on the Round Top of
Duel Hill or along Gun Creek. I'll bring my Sharps .50 caliber rifle
to call your Bluff. After my Bath in Beaver Creek we can kibbitz and
kvetch about Ybbsitz. I could go on forever like this, but I have to meet
my old friend Cocklebiddy Cockburn out on Rabbit Flat by the Crab
Hole. We're going to sit on a Loop Blanket and drink some Modoc or
Chateau Renard. After we break Sleeper Camp we're going to Ski down
Alan Hills to the Temple to celebrate our Success. Maybe we'll give
Sterling Webb a call to discuss the Delphi Credo. If it doesn't
Thunda and lightning, we can look for the lost Dingo Pup Donga. Or we
could listen to some Otis day and the Knights while watching old episodes
of Chico and the Man.

Hi Mike and List,

There is interest in the new meteorites. Check the archives.

There were 32 posts about Conception Junction since it was announced.

There were 35 posts about the new Kenya fall.

There were 16 posts about the newly-recovered Mexico fall.

That is a total of 83 posts about new meteorites in the last month.

By contrast, this silly thread you are bitching about has had 34 posts.

Unless my math is wrong, these numbers show that there is indeed more
interest in new meteorites than there is in silly meteorite names.

What else do you want? Should we put you on an ivory throne and sing
praises to you? ;)

Best regards and happy huntings,

MikeG

Widderstall (Ram's Stable) would be not a silly, but
a pretty nice

Re: [meteorite-list] Silly-sounding Meteorite Names

2011-09-02 Thread Michael Gilmer
You announce your latest find, it gets 30 replies and then when the
list members start having a little fun about meteorites, you get all
negative and start bitching that we aren't posting things you think is
on-topic.

It's funny, you'll email me off-list to slam other meteorite hunters
or to bad-mouth other dealers, or to say how horrible this list is,
but you won't add me to your mailing list or approve my Facebook
request. That's fine and you are free to do as you wish, but don't
act like this List is nothing but off-topic crap, because it's not.
Some serious science does get discussed here and meteorites are
discussed. Yeah, there is some off-topic alien crap (I agree with
you on that one), but Art does a good job of keeping things on track.
He reads the List and pops up every now and then to steer things back
in the right direction.

If every member of this List replied to your posts, it still wouldn't
be enough to feed your voracious ego.

But, as you have said a hundred times before - who cares what I think
or say. I am just one of the 1000 idiots on this list who don't
matter because we haven't flown around the world to find a meteorite.
Funny how you suddenly care when one of us is ready to spend money.
You are no different than the other dealers you bad-mouth.

I used to admire your no BS attitude and willingness to be
absolutely frank and blunt about your opinions. But now I see I had
those qualities confused with arrogance and ego.

You are a damn-good meteorite hunter and probably one of the best
currently on the planet - but your ego is the size of Vesta and your
attitude probably loses you a ton of sales - not that you care.

On 9/2/11, Michael Farmer m...@meteoriteguy.com wrote:

Actually not what I am looking for at all. But thanks for the note. Just
making a note as my emails have been coming in and phone ringing off the
hook about these dumb posts. If you think I am the only one, you are sadly
 delusional.
Simply 4 new meteorites, pallasite, rarest of the rare, and 3 falls (mexico,
California, Kenya) all within the last few weeks and again, no discussion.
Seems we need to add some bullshit about aliens and people like you would
 then go nuts.
I invite everyone to my facebook page where you can at least discuss what is
new out there without it being drowned out in worthless drivel. Clearly the
meteorite list is not a place to discuss meteorites, only sideshow games.

That one is great, Greg! We can even overlook that the Laughlin find

But about your Kenya picture with the T-shirts - Looks like a lot of

immediately upon returning was very gracious and it stood out from most
posts. I am sure many other list members noticed it as well.
Congratualtions for your part in the Kenya story, with your buddies.

aspect. The photo of the four Kenyan boys is without any doubt more valuable
as each single found meteorite.

Thanks for that,

best regards,
Matthias

That one is great, Greg! We can even overlook that the Laughlin find is
Arizona, about seven miles from Laughlin, NV, beats me why Devin Schrader
didn't give it the Finger Butte name (or better yet, Secret Pass Canyon).

But about your Kenya picture with the T-shirts - Looks like a lot of fun -
its the best image so far, you got my vote. Also, your post immediately
upon returning was very gracious and it stood out from most posts. I am
sure many other list members noticed it as well. Congratualtions for your
part in the Kenya story, with your buddies.

Kindest wishes
Doug

Mike, I'm sorry Ur not enjoying this thread. I Hope you can

I sure wish there was the interest in the actual meteorites recovered

the

Re: [meteorite-list] Silly-sounding Meteorite Names

2011-09-01 Thread bill kies

I understand that some of these names seem funny when translated from other
languages, compared to slang terms, used as idioms or otherwise misinterpreted
but I don't see how any are actually silly. This thread is silly in the true
sense of the word. I thought the naming process allowed for a certain amount of
flair when there was a choice at all but not silliness.

Is there any meteorite name that can really be tagged as being frivolous?

Mike, here's a few that always make me chuckle:

 Beaver
 Boxhole
 Chadong
 Faucett (this one's always running)
Gan Gan (Git Git's distant cousin)
 Potter (Harry?)
Tatahouine (isn't Luke Skywalker from there?)
Vaca Mueta (dead cow for crying out loud!)

 Best,
 Michael in so. Cal.
