I did both archaeological surveys and later a couple

they did target practice in the Peason Ridge area, the
firing sounded like War of the Wells Martians were
coming. It was cool experience. Also, there were
eerily silent helicopters that flew by on maneuvers.
The really scary incident was a strange aerial vehicle
with two huge vertical lifting fans within it and
completely silent that literally floated over us one
day just above the tree tops . That vehicle was enough
to give me nightmares about black helicopters.
There was never a dull day working in Fort Polk

Possibly the pilot turned his head to watch the mountain side as he blasted by

Adam, since the day I've lived in Tucson I've watched A10s and F 16s fly from
the base here to go on maneuvers or bombing runs often over to Yuma, hundreds
of miles from here. I hardly think a plane that can fly hundreds of miles needs
to stay within 40 miles of a base.
Amazing here in Tucson that so many people complain and cry about the noise of
the planes overhead, mostly nasty cranky old people. They claim to love our
country and freedom and the military but hate to be inconvenienced by them.
Please kill this lame topic now. High gas prices and the price of tea in China
both affect my meteorite hunting but it hardly needs to be discussed here.

Hi List,

In defiance of a certain Listee who always seems to have something to say
derogatorily whenever I post and the fact that my former mentor, Sonny, has
made a contribution to this thread with a mistaken AFB identification, I will
add a final antidote.

I am a former oil burning aviator of no little experience who spent literally
thousands of hours tearing around the sky over the deserts of the Southwest.
Oblivious all the time as to the wealth of meteorites that were beneath my
swept back wings.

I can attest to the truth of Adam Hupe's account of being buzzed by the Navy
(They fly F-18s, not the USAF) because a pilot will buzz anything he thinks he
can startle, or impress.(There was a good looking young lady in Adam's group).

My favorite prank, when I had the fuel and no wingman, was to see how low I
could fly, at a sufficiently high mach number, over the nearest legal house of
ill repute along my course. I'm sure that the Cottontail, Fran's Star Ranch,
Sherries, Ash Meadows Lodge, the Green Lantern and Bobbie's Buckeye (all
located in remote areas of Southern Nevada not far from what is correctly known
as Creech AFB) have all been in my sights on more than one occasion.

Just remembering what the effect must of been in those cribs makes me chuckle.

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY TO ALL AMERICANS!

Re: [meteorite-list] ED fix

2013-07-05 Thread Adam Hupe

That is interesting.  My father served this country his entire life achieving
the rank of General in the U.S. Army when he was just 42 years old. He earned
both the Legion of Merit and the Silver Cross among his too numerous to count
other medals.  I grew up around military bases and had to move every four years
so I am accustomed  to seeing military aircraft.  I lived a few miles from
McChord Air Force base at one time. I flew in Hueys at the Yakima Firing Center
in Washington (AT 79) where we roamed the desert that it is not all that much
different than the desert here in Nevada.  We would not dream of buzzing a
civilian if one were stupid enough to wander into this restricted area.  An MP
would be dispatched to deal with the problem. The only weapons on board were
rockets so we did not even have the ability to make a field arrest if somebody
were stupid enough to enter the area.

One thing that my father made very clear is that military aircraft was not be
used for civilian purposes or to interfere with the private sector.  He
recalled Washington State National Guard helicopters in flight that the
governor was using for site seeing purposes to entertain her friends.  This was
shortly after the Mt. St. Helens eruptions.  He decided these assets were
needed for rescue operations, not for the governor's personal use so he limited
her to one helicopter.  He turned down Henry Winkler who wanted to be flown in
a military aircraft during the Sea Fair festivities citing that a civilian who
has not served this country has not earned the right to use military resources.
He basically told the Fonz he could sit on it during the height of his
popularity on Happy Days.

F-18 jets buzzing civilians in the desert is no joking matter.  The fly by
startled us so badly that somebody could have lost their footing and fell to

All kidding aside, the Air Force jets have been buzzing people in rural
areas in Nevada for as long as I can remember. We have relatives in
Central and Northern Nevada who have experienced the jets flying so low
over their ranches that it shook their homes. We have witnessed C 130's
landing on dry lake beds (imagine the dust clouds) and military planes

That is interesting. My father served this country his entire life achieving
the rank of General in the U.S. Army when he was just 42 years old. He
earned both the Legion of Merit and the Silver Cross among his too numerous
to count other medals. I grew up around military bases and had to move every
four years so I am accustomed to seeing military aircraft. I lived a few
miles from McChord Air Force base at one time. I flew in Hueys at the Yakima
Firing Center in Washington (AT 79) where we roamed the desert that it is
not all that much different than the desert here in Nevada. We would not
dream of buzzing a civilian if one were stupid enough to wander into this
restricted area. An MP would be dispatched to deal with the problem. The
only weapons on board were rockets so we did not even have the ability to
make a field arrest if somebody were stupid enough to enter the area.

One thing that my father made very clear is that military aircraft was not
be used for civilian purposes or to interfere with the private sector. He
recalled Washington State National Guard helicopters in flight that the
governor was using for site seeing purposes to entertain her friends. This
was shortly after the Mt. St. Helens eruptions. He decided these assets were
needed for rescue operations, not for the governor's personal use so he
limited her to one helicopter. He turned down Henry Winkler who wanted to be
flown in a military aircraft during the Sea Fair festivities citing that a
civilian who has not served this country has not earned the right to use
military resources. He basically told the Fonz he could sit on it during
the height of his popularity on Happy Days.

F-18 jets buzzing civilians in the desert is no joking matter. The fly by
startled us so badly that somebody could have lost their footing and fell to
their death.

Adam all,

As Adam pointed out, this IS highly related to meteorite

Finally something political Adam and I agree on
Whole heartedly. And people are making jokes about this!

This is the second biggest threat to the American way our

Lest you think this is hooey note that everywhere you go on the

One more thing of interest.

Our group consisting of my wife, Zann von Hupe, Dr. Ted Bumch and myself were
literately in the middle of nowhere here in Nevada on a mountain side and were
buzzed by an F-18 jet.  The pilot turned the jet sideways, matched our altitude
and hit his afterburners just to let us know that he knew we were there.  He
flew so close to us that we could see his helmet and face-shield as he turned
his head to get a better look at us.

My question is; what device gave up our position?

No, we were not doing anything wrong and Dr. bunch was extremely angry about
being buzzed so close because it startled all us and we could have lost our
footing on the steep slopes.

Re: [meteorite-list] ED fix

2013-07-04 Thread Adam Hupe
It looked obviously deliberate to me.  We all interpreted the encounter the
same way. Dr. Bunch thought it was some jet jockey trying to show off but this
doesn't answer the question to how he knew we were at that remote location in
the first place.

The pilot completely surprised us.  He came around the mountain and we did not
hear the jet until it was at our exact coordinates.  It was impressive how
close he came to us out of nowhere.  The jet was so close that we observed the
pilot turning his head to get a better look at us.  He hit the afterburners,
then flew straight up and was out of sight in few mere seconds.  We did not
observe any more activity after this.

We had not seen a plane or another car all day and we were completely out of
cell phone range.  The only thing I can think of that betrayed our position was
our FM communications on a Rhino with tagging.  Too bad you can not buy FM
communicators with encryption any more.

A better question in my mind is, why would they send a jet after you and your
group?
If they didn't want you there, wouldn't they send a helicopter?  Or why would
they bother telling you that you are being tracked?
Is there a chance (just a chance) you have misinterpreted this event?
Hope you are well.

and were buzzed by an F-18 jet.  The pilot turned the jet sideways, matched
our altitude and hit his afterburners just to let us know that he knew we
were there.  He flew so close to us that we could see his helmet and
face-shield as he turned his head to get a better look at us.

My question is; what device gave up our position?

No, we were not doing anything wrong and Dr. bunch was extremely angry about
being buzzed so close because it startled all us and we could have lost our
 footing on the steep slopes.

2013-07-04 Thread Mark Bowling
I imagine they were tracking your Rhino as you suppose, but even if the voice
is scrambled, couldn't they triangulate you?

Maybe they just wanted to see who was in the area - which is probably why they
didn't make physical contact - when they saw you were just hikers.  Were you
near any military facilities?

In Southern AZ there are many electronic sensors along the border.  We've seen
helicopters come straight out to our location from Tucson, look around right
where we were and then head straight back to Tucson.  We didn't have any modern
vehicles, GPS or cell phones, so we assumed we triggered something.  The
sensors were for intercepting both drug and human traffickers.  Whenever they
spotted us and realized that we're deer hunters, they would ignore us and
leave.  Today they probably have live video and sound.  There was always a lot
of drug activity in the spot we used to hunt.  We've since abandoned our
50-year family hunting spot because of the increasing confrontations with drug
dealers.

Also when we cut wood out near Sasabe, the A-10's would strafe our trucks.
This was 20 - 30 years ago and we just took it as them practicing on our tank
- we would always wave at them when they flew by us and enjoyed the activity
and didn't feel threatened - this was during the cold war.  Back then we sold
fire wood to several A-10 pilots.

Stay safe,
Mark B.

You all are way too paranoid. Low level = 100% concentrated in flying the
plane and staying on the route. They are also really busy prosecuting the
scenarios. If it is red flag, that's further multiplied 10X. Sorry to burst
your bubble, but they probably didn't even know you were there, and if they
did, you got 100 milliseconds of their brain time, max.

Remember, fighters are weapon employment platforms, not ISR. If you aren't on
the ATO, you don't exist. They don't deviate from the days scenarios or test
cards (if it is a test flight) unless someone else has crashed and they have
been asked to assist.

LOL, seriously, if the pilot saw you guys and did a maneuver, it was out of
showing off and fun. Far from any malice.

As a former aircrew guy, and recently retired from a 23 year air force career,
I promise you they could care less about rock collectors. There isn't enough
training time - especially in the last five years - to go around. They are
extremely busy trying to check the boxes - either test cards or the weapon
school / Red Flag scenario at hand. They are concentrating on the mission, the
aircraft systems, and things in the air that [if not watched carefully] can
kill them. That list includes other airplanes, drones, birds, things falling
off the airplane, engines a few degrees from alloy melting points, and
ridgelines that like to smack pilots that don't pay attention.

They have to do all this, and accomplish an over-loaded task list with just
enough in the tanks to land with a couple of thousand pounds of reserve fuel.

Like an over-tasked soccer mom with 1000 kids in the back of the mini-van, they
are concentrating on much more serious things than people waling around on the
desert floor :)

As a former aircrew guy, and recently retired from a 23 year air force

isn't enough training time - especially in the last five years - to go
around. They are extremely busy trying to check the boxes - either test
cards or the weapon school / Red Flag scenario at hand. They are
concentrating on the mission, the aircraft systems, and things in the air
that [if not watched carefully] can kill them. That list includes other
airplanes, drones, birds, things falling off the airplane, engines a few
degrees from alloy melting points, and ridgelines that like to smack pilots
 that don't pay attention.

They have to do all this, and accomplish an over-loaded task list with just
enough in the tanks to land with a couple of thousand pounds of reserve fuel.

Like an over-tasked soccer mom with 1000 kids in the back of the mini-van,
they are concentrating on much more serious things than people waling around
 on the desert floor :)

I've had jets fly low while meteorite
hunting and thought it was really cool... never thought
anything negative about it at all.

The pilot of the F-18 really wasn't concerned about you, the
little specks on the ground. Worse case, he was doing
his (or her) normal training route, saw some people and
decided to give you a small air show out of fun. You
got a cool treat from an aviator, not a scare tactic.
They have enough on their plate monitoring the aircraft
systems and staying on schedule. Posse commitatus is
 still strongly enforced.

A lot of you are freaking out over non-existent
boogeymen. What you should be asking
yourselves is what really led to the BLM policy. As a
lurker on this list for a couple of years, I've noticed a
few of you, through your arrogance and willingness to
disregard existing laws and regulations, probably
contributed directly to the change. Those of us trying
to take the high road have to suffer.

My question is; what device gave up our position?

No, we were not doing anything wrong and Dr. bunch was
extremely angry about being buzzed so close because it
startled all us and we could have lost our footing on the
 steep slopes.

Sequestration killed that. He only gets dial tone on Mondays and Thursdays
between 8 and 10 Am EST. Calls outside the 202 area code require congressional
budget committee special approval.

We have to buy the fuel from Putin now :)

Are you sure? Obama has the BLM on
his desktop speed dial waiting for that chance to order
missiles free on meteorite hunters. He is tapped in by NSA
computers to your wristwatches. You are only safe if you use
an 1890s or before pocket watch.
