Re: [meteorite-list] TUCSON METEORITE THEFT

2024-02-12 Thread Alfredo Petrov via Meteorite-list
As someone who lives in Tucson, I'll add that many Tucson storage units are
notoriously unsafe! I know of numerous thefts from storage units, and the
storage facility owners will not even necessarily inform you after your
unit has been burglarized. Especially for foreign dealers who only visit
their storage units once a year during the show, and burglars can easily
find out that the unit is not visited the rest of the year, I recommend
doing whatever you can to find alternatives to a storage unit.

I will be going. The only venues that will be closed by the Covid Comissars
will be the City-Owned properties like the Convention Center. That still leaves
the lion‘s share of locations free to
choose. If you can go to Home Depot, the grocery store, or Christmas shopping,

All things considered, April sounds a bit optimistic.

If a show was outside, like Quartzite, then I would be less worried
about exposure risk while attending. My main concern would be
traveling to and from the show and how lodging could be handled.
Traveling and lodging present their own inherent risks.

Or, they could just move the show to Florida where the governor is a
science-denier and business is open as usual. A lot of people down
here are acting like nothing is happening. Events, parades, parties,
sporting events with fans in the stands, the whole nine yards. Of
course, the hospitals are filled to the rafters and the morgues are
overflowingso there's that.

Stay safe!

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Show 2017 Precautions and Advisories

2018-01-13 Thread Adam Hupe via Meteorite-list

Scary stuff,

Thank you for the heads up on the restaurants in Tucson that failed
health department guidelines. I have eaten at three or four of the
listed places in the past. I thought the stomach gurgles were from the
infamous Tucson Crude (flu) that goes around the show almost every year.
I remember my wife complaining to a waiter about the refried beans
being cold at an IMCA dinner at La Fuentes and he stuck his finger in
them and agreed. The waiter returned 20 minutes later with a second
serving of even colder beans.

The bed bug warning is definitely in order. My wife only agreed to
attend the show this year if we holed up in a hermetically sealed
Airstream travel trailer since she will not stay in a hotel in Tucson
ever again. We were attacked by these blood sucking vampires a few
years ago at a gem and mineral show which proved to be very costly. We
disposed of our luggage and clothes afterwards not wanting to bring
these disgusting bugs home with us.

Now, we always inspect hotel rooms for signs of bed bugs before
unloading our luggage. My wife made the mistake of closing the curtains,
turning off the lights and shinning a black light around the room the
last time we were in Tucson. Almost every surface exhibited fluorescence
caused by excitation of atoms in bodily fluids left behind from previous
guests. It looked somewhat like a murder scene you would see on a crime
show. We requested another room, were unable to sleep well and wished
we could forget what we saw.

Bed bugs are at epidemic levels in Tucson which ranks number 14 in the
entire nation for bed bug infestations!

Reference:
Aug 24, 2017 - Arizona Daily Star. Aug 24, 2017. Terminix is warning
Americans and those of us in Tucson and Phoenix that bed bugs are on the
rampage. Of the 20 top cities with a bed bug problem, Tucson ranks No.
14, which is not as bad as Phoenix at No. 7.

Warning; do not look at this graphic image if you do not want to see
some victims horribly bed bug bitten butt:

http://themeteoritesite.com/adam/BedBugBitesTucson.jpg

Be careful what you eat since they may be attracted to flatulence
especially when you are at your most vulnerable, degassing at night:

http://www.toptenz.net/top-10-reasons-why-bed-bugs-are-pure-evil.php

Woman killed by bed bug bites:
https://www.zappbug.com/killed-by-bed-bug-bites/

In all seriousness, be careful and use precautions so that you do not
pick up the flu, get eaten by bed bugs, get food poisoning or are
sickened by black mold.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Tucson Show - Any IMCA Dinner Pictures?

Dear List Members,

I could not help but notice that with the Ensisheim show coming up that
there was not much fanfare about the Tucson show this year. I decided at
the last minute not to attend because of the lack of social activities on
the venue for meteorite people and reports that it was very, very slow. I
remember a time when there were five or six get togethers at the show and
you had to book a room nearly a year in advance.

Speaking of social activities, did anybody take pictures of the IMCA
dinner?, the sole meteorite specific activity left. I have not heard
anything about it.

Best Regards,

Adam

Amazing things on display and for sale. I had to leave for a family emergency
but am dealing with that and will return Sunday evening. Jim can handle all my
business in my absence.
Be sure to check it out. Room 184 Hotel City Center. Moritz Karl and Comet shop

Hello All,

Saturday morning we landed in Phoenix on delayed flights due to the storm
and didn't make it to Tucson until 3:30 AM. After sleeping in we eventually
made our way to the Inn Suites around 2:00 PM enjoying the pouring rain and
flooding. Being an experienced show attendee, I was able to 'talk' my way
through the blocked hotel parking area and found a spot 10 feet from the
covered walkway.

We spent the next three hours visiting with old friends, meeting new ones
and finally meeting a few 'Facebook' friends I have never met in person.
That night we met with close friends from out of state for dinner and
enjoyed great seafood and Margaritas... Awesome first day of the show!

Yesterday, after a relaxed morning of sleeping in again, we went to a couple
show rooms and I bought two nice diogenites, a CM2 and a gorgeous
howardite... We later met with friends for fantastic southwest grilled
seafood and delicious pizza while watching the Super Bowl, fun times were
had by all.

Today is another relaxed start of the day and more meteorite 'Fun
Friends'...

Looking forward to meeting up more peeps!

Adam, I am sorry the only one having adversity seems to be you.
Good luck with that, one day when you actually leave your house and use those
cool trucks you might be happier.
Tucson won't be the same without you. But everyone here is getting a kick out
of your posts regarding the show. It's ok, Bagdad Bob was funny as well. Those
of us still in the business are doing fine, well, with some exceptions of
people who think eBay sales and kickstarter scams will make them any money.
Anyway, nice chatting with you, I have a very busy and large room of meteorites
to attend to.

Good luck at the show. I do not depend much on eBay these days although it
is a good place to liquidate items if you are not concerned about getting
anywhere near top dollar. I still believe better deals are to be had online
these days for collectors who choose to stay home and make deals. I feel
sorry for all the Tucson show attendees that came early believing they would
get a good deal (full retail) from the Moroccans who's inventories are stuck
in customs.

It is appalling that some meteorite personalities would be involved with
crowdfunding (kistarter scams) and I have no clue who Bagdad Bob is since I
tend to stay away from heavily monitored social media. I leave Facebook to
my wife who can waste time comparing recipes, posting pictures and other
small talk.Even the creator of Facebook didn't have an account until a
few years ago. He doesn't have time for it.

It will be good to get back in the field and away from those who I no longer
trust,

Lowest consignment fees still available. Cost for credit cards
Has gone down and will be passed on to bidders as well.
More soon, Michael

Hi Adam,

You are a good man. I take care of an elderly parent at home, and it is
wonderful to hear that you too have the love and concern to want to take
care of family. Too often, parents are shoved off to live the rest of their
lives in an assisted living facility because nobody wants them. They cared
for us when we were children, but somehow, that does not always come full
circle when they grow elderly.

Yes, there are instances where assisted living is the only good option, but
like you, I wish to avoid that until it becomes absolutely necessary.

I sincerely hope that your mother-in-law's health continues to improve.

Warm Regards,

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Information Page

2013-01-13 Thread Michael Blood
Hay everyone,
I have checked the page and so far there are 3 (including myself)
In the dealer section - look, everyone, if you are at the Tucson Show
And NOT in the Tucson guide, unless you are prominent at the Inn Suites
(now known by some other stupid name) you will DEFINITELY loose
Business by failing to be listed in this guide.
In the VISITING TUCSON section there is a grand total of 4,
Counting me and Chicago Steve. That will make it easy for everyone
To call each other on their cellsNOT.
Come on, what is with this year's show? Nearly everyone entered
Their items in the Auction very late - and 4 or 5 yes, but later people
Still not in - and now no one is listing themselves in the Tucson Guide
PageWHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?
Time to get the lead out, folks
Michael

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Meteorite Auction Update (AD?...probably)

2013-01-10 Thread Michael Blood
Hi Y'all,
I had been waiting on several people who had said they
Were putting more lots in, but the time has comePlease
Send in your absentee bids this month. Please do NOT wait
Until the end of the monthlast year SEVERAL people
Emailed me AFTER I had left for the show so never got their
Absentee bids counted (If there is any question, here is the
Answerif you do not get an email CONFIRMATION of your
Absentee bids, I did not receive themalso, sometimes emails
To not arrive - same thing - no confirmation = I didn't get the
Email {heard from someone today who had emailed absentee
Bids recently, but I never received them})
So, there you have it. Check out the goodies at:

http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/AuctionTucson2013.html

If you aren't going to Tucson, now is the time to put in those bids.
As always, just like eBay, you can place your highest bid and it will
Work as a next highest increment above bidders in the auction
And/or other absentee bidders.

RSVP off list,
Thanks, Michael

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Meteorite Auction (AD)

2012-09-19 Thread Michael Blood
Dear List Members,

Please check out about 65 items now up, including over a dozen
different pallasites, large old Nininger Canyon Diablo, a cool large Gibeon,
A large Canyon Diablo with a nice sized hole, etc, etc.

http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/AuctionTucson2013.html

ALSO, it is time people who will be placing absentee bids start
Doing so. Last year about 30% of the absentee bids came in AFTER
I had left for Tucson, so never were recorded and bid for. You can always
Ad more when new material comes in.

In addition, the call now is for higher mid range and substantial
specimens for the remaining lots (I have plenty of low and lower mid
Range specimens to satisfy the ultra thrifty bidders).

For really substantial specimens I will negotiate consignment fees.

RSVP
Thanks, Michael

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Meteorite Auction 2013 (AD)

2012-08-03 Thread Michael Blood
Dear fellow List members,

This coming Tucson Meteorite Auction will be held in the
Same location as the last several years on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013.

http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/AuctionTucson2013.html

First, I would like to thank all of you for your past patronage in
The Tucson Meteorite Auctions of the past. I appreciate it very much.

Unfortunately the cost of putting on the auction has increased
So significantly in the last several years that I have been walking a
Narrow line just to stay in the black on these events, let alone make
any money from them. On occasion, it has even cost me - after hundreds
Of hours of prep (the on line catalog is quite time consuming)and money
Up front.

As you are probably aware, most auctions charge at least 25%
Consignment fees while 35% is rapidly becoming the norm. In short,
I must raise my consignment fee to 15% (for items submitted by Sept. 1)
to be certain I will break even.

In addition, most auctions now have a Buyers' Premium of 15%
At least and often more. I will be holding that to 10%.

I already have 15 items up and a personal collection of 17
pallasites and 38 other meteorites on the way - in
the mail to me NOW
As soon as they arrive I will get them photographed and
listed in the
On line catalog. That will make 70 lots from the get go. SEE HERE:

http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/AuctionTucson2013.html

Those who would like to submit items, please contact me off list.

I hope you all will be continuing your involvement - I would
certainly love to see this auction continue as the joyful event it has
become as part of the overall Tucson Show experience for the meteorite
community.

Thanks, Michael

Hi Doug -

I wouldn't try it without your wonderful personal help.
I don't know how to say more lidocaine in Spanish.

My guess as to where the Yaqui meteorites are is in their pockets or in their
houses.

You could just ask them, and unless you're too greedy or obsessed, they'd
likely tell you. The key is respect, and remembering that they have their own
way of looking at things, and valuing them.

Hi Ed, I'm sorry you can't make it to
Tucson, but if you don't have dental insurance, you'll
probably get a better work for half the price right across
the border from Tucson/Nogales and can make your trip
 worthwhile.

Plus you might find some interesting stuff in Yaqui culture
if you look hard enough in that territory.  Really from
a meteorite hunting perspective it's hard to top the
Yaquis.  They traditionally believe that everything
that inhabits the desert intercommunicates with a
 proto-language.  This includes (especially)
rocks.  I have always wondered what lore of meteorites
they might have and what they would make of it and you would
be the guy to work that out.  Maybe a full-blooded
Yaqui fluent in the old language could ask the rocks where
they keep their meteorites ;-) as a bonus!  Anyway, a
super interesting never-conquered culture which if not for
commercialization of La Bamba would probably get even more
 respect and a better understanding...

Anyway, the Deer Dance is all about the arid desert hunt

survival.  Here's an excellent no bullshit/no props

Subject: [meteorite-list] Tucson College Rodeo - February 4th

Hello all,

Late January and the entire month of February are very busy days in
Tucson. I don't have to mention all of the various gem and mineral shows
that have during that time, but besides these shows, we also host the
Accenture Match Play Championship and other events as well as two rodeos.

The big one, The Tucson Rodeo, is a professional rodeo and attracts large
crowds. The smaller one, the Tucson College Rodeo is hosted by the
University of Arizona Rodeo Team. My wife and I try to attend both rodeos
each year, but we have been struck by how good some of these college
students are. In some events, the kids and animals have provided much
better performances and more exciting rides than the professionals do. We
actually like this rodeo better in many ways!

Most years these rodeos occur well after the gem mineral shows end but
this year, due to some changes in the Grand Canyon Region scheduling, this
year's college rodeo is not only happening before the professional rodeo
(usually it is the weekend after the big one ends), but the college rodeo
is happening during the shows.

I thought some on this list who have never attended a rodeo, or come from
countries where they do not have rodeos, might be interested in attending.

The rodeo occurs on February 4th, which is a Saturday, and is the same day
as the Blood Auction.

The main performance begins at 2pm but Slack begins at 8am. (Slack is when
there are more contestants than can be fit into the normally scheduled
performance.)

The events at this rodeo are the same you'll see at most any rodeo;

Saddle Bareback Bronc Riding
Steer Wrestling
Tie Down Team Roping
Barrel Racing
Breakaway Roping
Goat Tying

and of course everyone's favorite

Bull Riding!

(Sorry, no Mutton Busting)

The rodeo is free as is the parking. It takes place at the Tucson Rodeo
Grounds. Here is a map:

http://tinyurl.com/7gtsvu7

Note the parking lots are accessed from S 3rd Ave. The other gates will
probably be closed.

Again, this is a free rodeo and the parking is free also. There are
usually one or two food vendors on site during the events too.

I hope some of you coming to Tucson in a few weeks can take a few hours
and come down and enjoy the rodeo!

Richard,

I stayed in Marana last year at the Motel 6 that Ruben mentioned on Ina
Road. The prices did not increase for the show and it was an ok Motel
6.

It's a 10 mile easy freeway drive to the show and not much of a problem at
all.
I am staying there again this year. I booked months ago but if I remember
right it was under $70/night and they do accept AARP cards for discounts.

Mike's description of the prices was spot on. A room worth $70/night or
less gets about $180 to $250 per night for the show closer to town. Way
out of my price range.

I'll be there the weekend of the bash and auction doing some filming with
Ruben. I'll also be running around during the show filming and if anyone
want to be filmed or show your rooms to the world, I need to kinda get an
idea. This will be on MTV (Meteorite TV) at some point during the show
(at least that's the plan right now!) There maybe two streaming feeds
this year, but Ruben and I will work that all out and come up with a
schedule of sorts,should be fun!

Cheers

You had better hurry, rooms expensive even for crap at gem show time, if you
have the ability, best to try and stay in casa grande or benson both about

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson lodging advice help ??

2011-12-22 Thread Ruben Garcia
Hi Richard,

The Ruben vs Anne TV show should really be called Ruben Loves Anne
Cause we're just playing and are really good friends.

Don't forget though, if you can't make the Tucson Meteorite Show I'll
once again be broadcasting live from the infamous Birthday Bash and
also the Blood Auction. So, if Anne dares or is up for it, we can
always have more friendly banter on LIVE MTV (Meteorite Television)

As for Lodging. Even when every room in Tucson is booked the Motel 6
off of Ina and I-10 still have plenty of inexpensive rooms. At least
that has always been my last minute room.

If you are considering putting a nice specimen or two
(or more) in, now is the time. If you get me the description
Today and send in the photo within a week I will give you
Today's rate.

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Auction

2011-02-25 Thread Göran Axelsson

Very well written!

Keeping the results secret will only create doubt in those of us that
put in a absentee bid and couldn't visit (I live in Sweden) or watch the
broadcast (I fell asleep).

This year I had a couple of low bids but didn't win any of them. I've
been a absentee bidder for a couple of years now and won some and lost some.
A couple of times I've put in an absentee bid higher than the winning
bid but didn't win the piece anyhow as Michael made mistakes during the
auction. This have happened more than once for me (2007 3 lots, 2009 2
lots).
If I ask for a list of realised prices in private, what would keep him
from adjusting it according to my bids to keep me in the dark if he made
another mistake. Was it a mistake or did he favour one of his friends?

I say, publish the prices to keep the doubt and mistrust out of the auction.

I don't know if I will make any bids next year. It will probably depend
on if the prices is publicised or not.
The only reason I see to keep the result secret is to keep the auction
as a dealer - dealer event and to keep the prices down. By revealing
that you can get a great deal would attract more bidders.

At least I would like to know the final prices of the following lots. I
also reveal my absentee bids if anyone is interested.

Lot 6 ETw 1 Moss 648mg $45
Lot 71 TM 1 Moldavite $65
Lot 76 DP 2 Lovina (ANOM Iron)$40
Lot 77 DP 3 Hvittis (EL6) $90

2011-02-25 Thread Greg Hupe

Hello Tucson Auction Enthusiasts,

I have no problems with the auction results being publicized, I say go for
it. But, like I stated before, it would be good for all involved (especially
new collectors) to have the disclaimer that prices realized do NOT
particularly reflect retail pricing.

Retail pricing is subjective as discussed here so it is a very difficult, if
not impossible, job to put together a guide that reflects all levels of
pricing. A guide that includes; Web Site 'asking' prices, completed eBay
auctions, completed Tucson Auctions, completed BIG Auction Houses, etc.
would be a guide that would encompass all levels of 'retail' sales and would
be a valuable tool for collectors at ALL levels of experience.

In the meantime, I support Michael Blood's auction and will continue to do
so!

Just my two lunar chips worth!

Best Regards,
Greg

Michael,
First and foremost I would like to apologize if I offended you.
I am truly sorry you felt the need to say these things because I meant nothing
personal.
The fact that people favor certain things in collecting was recently discussed
right here on this list and we all know that hammer would be your favorite
feature in a meteorite. I like hammers too and people have asked me why we did
not collect or even photograph the dead animals at the scene of the Carancas
fall. Well, to be honest, my crew never thought of it. I think it may have to
do with cultural issues. Our team was mostly Bolivian Catholics. Enough said.
Apparently there would have been a market for those dead animal parts but, I
guess we missed an opportunity there. I had no idea.
As far as *taste* is concerned. I will leave that judgement alone.
And finally, I have no problem understanding people's
willingness to pay high dollars for Gems from space. What my biggest problem
with this concept had only to do with consumer trust.
These Gems could never be scientifically verified. Or could they at a
reasonable cost? That's all. EBay would be flooded with fake Peridot from
space with certificates of Authenticity. which can be printed by anybody. It
could say something like; I found this meteorite in Kansas and melted the
metal away myself so, I certify these as authentic Gems from space. As I
pointed out. there are others that already say this but, in their case it
happens to be true. I am sure Keith and Dana are legit but there will be
hundreds of posers to follow.
In fact it would not surprise me if we begin to see other dead bugs on EBay as
well.
Again, nothing personal and please accept my apology.

do with cultural issues.
It could say something like; I found this meteorite in Kansas and melted the
metal away myself so, I certify these as authentic Gems from space. As I
pointed out. there are others that already say this but, in their case it
happens to be true. I am sure Keith and Dana are legit but there will be
 hundreds of posers to follow.
In fact it would not surprise me if we begin to see other dead bugs on EBay as
 well.
Again, nothing personal and please accept my apology.

Hi Martin,
My recollection is that there was a jump bid (a bid higher than the

Perhaps there was a bid I missed? Or, perhaps you expected me

If the latter, I explained some auctions past that while people were

2011-02-24 Thread Shawn Alan
Hello Listers,

I guess if the final value prices got posted on the List from the auction, Mr
Blood would have done that awhile back ago? But as for the auctions goes, I
dont see how the final prices can reflect the meteorite market value, prices go
up and down and auction prices cant gauge the real market value of any given
meteorite. Also, Jason made a great post about the value of meteorites and what
collectors look for in determining value, so I think that is also something
good to think about.

I'm a little perplexed over this statement. You've got to

 here? Aren't we

I'm sorry, I disagree with this whole thing. Make it be

2011-02-24 Thread Darryl Pitt

John and Greg do indeed have terrific points.

The issue with Mike's Tucson Auction is that the prices attained are, far more
often than not, anomalously low. I'm not exactly certain why---but several
factors come to mind. To a lesser extent, the same occurred with the Macovich
Auctions at Tucson...was it a decade ago? (Wow.)

I am all for transparency, but transparency can frequently result in
disinformation if there is no context. And to be clear, I did not state this
was a wholesale event. I suggested that be stated that the auction occurred at
a wholesale marketplace.

For me, it's precisely because this is not the same as eBay---this is a
traditional auction and its perceived gravitas is far greater---that perhaps we
should be more sensitive to the messages being provided. Just a thought.

Nonetheless, I totally get the opposing point of view.

All best / Darryl

it, there were a lot ofcomments made. But why are we trying to hide
something here? Aren't wetrying to be honest? Not even with the buyers,
but with the public thatview this list? We're just adding to meteorite
buyers / collectors beingcorrupt. We don't need to hide anything and we
don't need to give thosethat frequent these pages fire power to say
that we're not legit.I'm sorry, I disagree with this whole thing. Make
it be known, make itbe public. That's the only way we're going to move
forward from beingnegative. That's just my thoughts and not anyone
else's. But I'm alittle concerned about the non-transparency. Bear with
me, I'm not outto condone anybody, but give it some
thought.CheersJohnIMCA # 2125-Original Message-From:

While, as someone who couldn't attend the auction, I originally asked
the List if there was any way to know the final-sales-prices of the
auction, hoping I could find them somewhereNow I suggest that
Michael, Capt. Blood, makes them available only off-list by request
to avoid publication in a rogue journal or hyped newspaper/journal
adventure bent on achieving TV ratingssomehow for those of us who
still don't know (I listened to the whole Ruben-feed but didn't take
notes). I know that there will be a bunch of posts about this (no

what do you think? Respect intended, Richard Montgomery -

Please do consider not publicly posting the auction results---or if
you are intent to do so, I urge you to consider making it absolutely
clear the auction occurs at a wholesale marketplace and the prices
attained reflect the same. The last thing needed is more confusion
for the growing legion of new buyers who are exasperated in their
efforts to navigate the murky waters of meteorite valuation.
Thank you for your consideration. All the best / Darryl On
