Re: [meteorite-list] Las Vegas

2009-10-08 Thread E.P. Grondine
Hi all -

From what I could make out during my visit several years back, many meteorite
dealers were paying so high rents in Tucson that it left them with little
profit for their effort.

While list members are meteorite centric, we have to keep in mind that the Gems
and Minerals do vastly larger sums of money at Tucson, and would likely do more
in Las Vegas, as it is nearer to Los Angeles and the West Coast. Add in easier
and cheaper airline travel...

Further, with the decline of gambling, rates in Vegas may be set most
attractively for them.

Tucson may have taken it all for granted.
E.P.

Hi Steve and all,

The deserts of the SW part of North America are very unforgiving in late July.
As a young man I spent a few years out there. Many list members from the world
over have posted valuable information concerning desert hunting. Read
everything you can before you venture into what can be a very harsh place.

Good luck,
Bill

Man, you are one crazy dude!
Hope you find the big one.

PS: You might get one of those Tucson crazies to go with you - they
gotta be real Gila Monsters to survive that kind of heat. There
is one of them with an odd British brogue - he seems to be up for

Maybe a favorite spot or known good area. All guide fees would be in the
form of sunburns and desert creatures if any, but will provide gas money, or
maybe the car (depends on terrain as it will be some impossibly small
 rental), eats and drinks.

I would only be able to go August 3rd or 4th (Thursday or Friday), but would
be able to go all day either day while the wife enjoys her vice.

Contact me off list if possible

Hi Mark and List,

I will be in Las Vegas for a couple days next month and wondered
if there is anyone there who would able to guide me on a trip
looking for meteorites. Maybe a favorite spot or known good
area. All guide fees would be in the form of sunburns and desert

A tempting offer at most times of the year, but as Michael Blood
indicated you've selected a rather sporting time of year to
hunt space rocks in the desert southwest! Still, if I happen to
find myself in Vegas at that time, it might be amusing to try
early morning (starting before sunset) til as late as you can
stand. 10am is probably about all you'll be able to take.

I would only be able to go August 3rd or 4th (Thursday or Friday),
but would be able to go all day either day while the wife enjoys
 her vice.

An alternative suggestion is to hunt at night with flashlights
on a dry lake bed (e.g. Roach Dry Lake). You'll have a waxing
gibbous moon on those dates, so you'll also have some natural
lighting to assist. Hunting at night at Roach is actually quite
doable -- there are few rocks, so you simply check every one
as you walk.

Hi Tom (Peregrineflinger, etc.),

Good to see you back on the list. Glad you found work.

Hi, I am going to be working in Vegas and was wondering if anyone from there
can give me info on hunting in the area?
Just wander into the desert...dp into the desert. Look down. Find
meteorite.

Jerry

PS... Take water. Beware of indians.

PPS... Jerry's Tips: first one free, $5.00 each thereafter.
