Same issue :( Florian the mirror slows down to a crawl. It only happens
when downloading from that mirror. Other things download at maximum speed
for me which is 2.3 Mbps this is under 100kbps and drops lower then that.

Out of curiosity what Kind of bandwidth would one need to host a mirror?

I have not tried on one of my mac's, but this is a windows machine that
im on right now. I am downloading stuff off of you tube just fine no
speed issues. I am down in Malta oddly enough it only seems to happen
with this mirror. linux vm's seem to be fine as well.

Does anyone have a windows 7 64bit to try test the download and see if
its just an issue with windows 7 networking somewhere.

Hi Jonathan,

I am about an hour north of Milano, with a connection that will not win
any speed awards and Garr is my preferred mirror. I have recently
encountered problems with validation check on updates for my Linux
distro, but download speeds are not an issue for me. I have just tested
by re-downloading LO Win 3.6 from Garr and the speed was consistent for
the whole ~10 minute download. Maybe you have a local connection issue.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

[tdf-mirrors] Suggestion

2012-06-22 Thread Jonathan Aquilina
When one clicks download The user should be able to choose a mirror that
is closest to them if there are multiple mirrors that are geographically
close to the user, or if there is a way to detect a bogged down server
which is recieving lots of downloads, when the download button is
pressed could an alternative mirror be automatically chosen.

the mirror I downloaded form was an italian one gerrit.it mirror and I
noticed 1 thing.

First attempt at downloading i was getting speeds of about 18kbps. I
cancelled the download and restarted again and it started at 780kbps and
started slowing down. I have included the mirrors list in this email too.

as I said: It is based on the bandwith of the mirrors and the net
location of the ASNs. It is *not* solely based on geographical issues.
E.g., for me here in southern Germany, a mirror in Switzerland,
Austria or even in the UK might be much faster and better than one in
northern Germany.

our download system chooses the mirror that best fits your net

having the following issue.

I was trying to download the windows msi installer through internet

some reason the download stalled and never completed.

Tried it on mac this time via the safari browser and it looks like it
didnt take me to a mirror at all, or at least i couldnt tell. but is there
a problem with bandwidth or traffic to the download servers?

Tried it a 2nd time and it seems to be downloading.

I dont know if there is an automatic way to do it but it involves one
making the torrent, you need to add a tracker etc

All this is done. You can download the torrent files via the download
page:
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/

either click "Torrent" of each file or, if You want to seed all files,
click "Info" at the same place which shows all relevant info for the
file including hashes to check integrity. Also shown in the browsers
address line is the path of the file in the distribution file system.

and get people seeding it. If you put together a torrent I am more
then willing to help by seeding.

So the question is *how* to get the files for seeding rather than *if*
so.

My question was about the preferred way of syncing to get the recent
files - the one without bad impact for the statistics.

Gruß/regards
My apologies on my misunderstanding. Was not aware that torrents were
easily available :) but I am more then glad to help seed such a great
project :).

May be not... depending on what is your windows version it may try to
use some v6 to v4 translation mechanism (like Teredo) even if you
never asked it to.. simple check, of your connection is v4 only and
don't need v6 at all go into the network properties and disable ipv6,
then try again.

PS: i just tried on 7 with ipv6 enabled - i do have v6 connectivity
though - and can reproduce your issue. It waits for some time (10
seconds, 20 seconds or so), than start downloading, and it's because
of v6 unreachability of the site.

v6 wont work unless the server supports it as well.

It is most likely the internet connection the mirror is on or its
getting swamped with requests probably. I am inclined to say that the
NIC is the bottle neck. I bet that it is most likely a 100 Mbit network

sorry that I missed to notify you. Indeed, we need to move the

I'm not (or not yet!) maintaining a mirror, but these figures seems to
diverge too much from official Document Foundation announcements,
stating that only 11 GBytes are needed:

http://blog.documentfoundation.org/2011/01/25/the-document-foundation-launches-libreoffice-3-3/

If we need more than four times that space to setup a mirror, then the
announcement is inaccurate or at least incomplete... Is 45 GBytes the
right figure then?

That's more like about 11 GB per release:

11G/tdf/libreoffice/stable/3.3.1

Currently you'll need something like 45GB.

12G/tdf/libreoffice/stable/3.3.0
11G/tdf/libreoffice/stable/3.3.1

Regards,

Right now my reaction is WTF what is taking up that much space O_o

1) To lower the bar for ppl to install LibreOffce I'd not JUST do
torrent. Most endusers prefer a click to download something, sometimes a
firewall/proxy even forbids anything else but HTTP downloads.

Right so!

2) If torrents are done, they could be backed by a few high bandwidth
webservers (mirrors then) via http seeds. This would always give you
quite fast downloads and still saves some bandwidth on the mirrors.

Torrents automatically exist for all files offered on
download.documentfoundation.org. The content distribution network (MirrorBrain)
takes care of this automatically. Furthermore, all mirrors which have the files
are automatically included as HTTP seeds in the torrents. (To be precise, not
all mirrors, just the 10 (or so) closest ones :-)

3) With adaption of LibreOffice from more and more Linux distros the
direct downloads will then go to the package repos of those distros.

4) Currently I don't see much bandwith from tdf though ... why not worry
about it if one can see results from changes (like introducing torrents
when there are LOTS of big downloads from DVD-ISOs). Also the use of
mirrorbrain sends users to the "closest" mirror, so it's not traffic
being sent around the world all the time.

I'm sure the traffic will increase in the future :-)

Peter
No doubt the traffic will increase, hence the suggestion to have them
provided from now.

Having no clue how it works with mirrorbrain in detail, I'll proceed to

Hi!

Perhaps rsync-push should be limited to the core parts (eg. the
/stable/ tree) where simultanous release is an issue. So mirror admins
can choose to rsync-pull the other trees like /old/ and /DVD/.
Another solution would be to have differend kinds of "subscriptions"
for rsync-push, but i guess this would be difficult to handle on the
TDF side.

But perhaps this is not an issue at all, since everyone has enough
space left to take it all. I do. ;-)

I disagree with that Rimas. Even the end users would want a list of
the mirrors as well. for instance what if someone wants to find a
mirror close to them to download from whats going to be done then
without a list?

What happens is:
1) MirrorBrain chooses the closest mirror automatically
2) If for some reason you want to choose a different mirror manually,
there is an automatic mirror list for EACH FILE you may want to
download. Like the one at
http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/testing/3.3.0-beta3/win/x86/LibO_3.3.0_Win_x86_install_all_lang.exe.mirrorlist
.

Does that solve your problem?

On the other hand, I don't see who would actually care about that list

about it because we want to be listed there, so to me it seems like
that page would basically exist just for its own sake, which is rather
unjustified. Not that having an automatic listing would hurt though...

We have per-file lists like this one:

But since RC1 is not public yet, it seems you can't see the list for
its files there. Peter should be able to help though.
