nope , wicd is actually based on gtk & python , also wicd-client for
kde available on kde-apps.org.
( written in qt4 )

Haven't tried though on *bsd's.

No mistake. Randy said Theo has a valid point, and he does.

If you ever get the chance to have a discussion with either Theo or
Randy, you should realize two things immediately:

1.) They're really fucking smart, and they've done all their homework.
2.) They're probably *way* ahead of you in the discussion, and they're
impatiently waiting for you to mentally catch up.

More Fun:

 * 2.2. Intel grants, free of charge, to any person ("Licensee") obtaining a

It seems "worldwide" means some other world besides this one.

wicd is as small as network gui I can find in linux. Also I believe
pc-bsd made their own version of network gui. It probably depends on
kde or qt though.

Wireless Network GUI

2010-10-06 Thread Hugo Osvaldo Barrera
I want to make a small desktop application (probably GTK+, since I've
never done anything in GTK) that shows available wireless networks,
signal, and a few buttons to connect to each/configure each.

I don't intend to make a huge daemon like the linux's NetworkManager,
but, instead, just a simple application you open, connect, and close.
Done. No bloat, and definitely ***NO*** requirement for stuff like
HAL.

I wanted to get a few pointers before I started:
1) First of all, I want to be sure no one's already working on
something like this.
2) I initially considered just parsing the output of "ifconfig ".
This does seem rather hackish, but would get the job done fast and can
still be very maintainable code. However, what's the proper
alternative (just a few pointer to know what to start reading will do)
to do this sort of this.

Thanks :-)

Hi,
i would like to explain a bug :
On my laptop, I install the latest iso file downloaded here :
ftp://ftp.fr.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/snapshots/i386/install48.iso

If I do a classic boot, the machine shutdown after 10 seconds saying :
"Oct  1 16:38:15 laptop /bsd: acpitz0: Critical temperature 255C

If I do a boot disabling the acpi (thanks to pea), then my machine work
fine, but the battery is not correctly managed :
# apm
Battery state: unknown, 0% remaining, 0 minutes life estimate
A/C adapter state: not known
Performance adjustment mode: manual (1663 MHz)

If I start "apmd -A", nothing appends and in /var/log/message, I can
see :

Oct 1 17:23:46 laptop apmd: cannot open device file `/dev/apmctl':

I suppose that is due to acpi is disabled.

help, but I haven't dug into that any further as of yet (fan
runs constantly, acpitz overtemp until I disable the driver in
the kernel, things like that).

All in all, I've been happy with this netbook under OpenBSD.

Most places have demos out for customers to test. So, install OpenBSD
-current to a USB stick, then go to Office Max or Best Buy or someplace
similar and boot the Netbooks from the USB stick to see which has the
best supported hardware. Be sure to type on the keyboard too, make sure
it fits your hands.

man the wireless drivers to see a list of supported USB 802.11 cards.

Some more details would be helpful. E.g., at least a dmesg from your
working 4.7 install, and if you could transcribe at least the last few
lines of dmesg output from booting install48.iso (e.g., did it panic
or just hang?) that would go a long way.

Netbook for OpenBSD?

2010-10-06 Thread Mikle Krutov
Hello, list!
I'm a FreeBSD user (a very little experience with openbsd in the past),
but i'm kind of interested in any bsd flavour (i like *nix, but dislike
linux for some reasons).
So, the question is if there is any positive experience with using
OpenBSD on modern netbooks of the following:
1) Samsung N127
2) ASUS Eee PC 900AX
3) MSI U120-094
Or any other models with 10" monitor and 4+ battery lifetime?
By positive i mean mainly correctly & stable working wireless.
If nothing fits, please give me a recommendation which usb wireless card
should i use.
Thank you for your time,

Does OpenBSD also have commands like these?

Thank-you, Chris. No, I was not aware of that, but I am not the least
bit surprised.

I have not travelled to the US since '98. Post-9/11 and the PATRIOT
act, I have no intention of returning to the US (I am a Canadian
citizen) due to similar stories, but I didn't know about that "fun"
fact. Everything since then hasn't "smelled right" to me.

Believe it or not, I don't personally know anyone that has entered the
US post-9/11. When I think about it, everyone I know has been on
international flights that did not involve entering the US at all.

Thanks again for the information. I've had a long suspicion that if I
got to the border, I'd say "No" to something and would be denied entry,
so I haven't even tried. I miss Hawaii, but apparently it doesn't miss
me. ;)

IIRC, sourceforge was required by some US agency to block IPs from
various countries or else remove the given projects from the site. It

I'm not trying to be a wise-acre here, I agree with Theo 100%. I doubt
anyone wants to be screwed by customs (anywhere) due to licencing
issues. I also don't doubt that customs would dig deep to find "dirt"
if they really wanted to.

My question is: Has it ever happened to anyone?

Has anyone actually had a customs agent say "Wait a minute, you're using
/foo/ OS. You can't be crossing our border."

No flames please; I'm just curious. I realize the distinction here is
between it not being possible (OpenBSD) and theoretically possible
(FreeBSD).

I have several small projects housed at sourceforge.net that fall under a
similar export restriction because they are housed there. Just using the
arc4random() stuff (from OpenSSH) for linux requires one to report it to
the US government because it uses crypto (OpenSSL) afaik. I believe the US
government put pressure on sourceforge.net to adhere to export restrictions
even if the developer is from outside of the US. Could it be that the same
happened to FreeBSD and that's why the license change?

man 3 inet_aton:
SYNOPSIS

So yes, order does matter.

I guess you actually meant

$ mixerctl outputs.line-pnk_dir=input-vr80
outputs.line-pnk_dir: output -> input-vr80

:-)

You're trying to build smtpd-current on an OpenBSD that's not -current and
unfortunately things that matter for smtpd have changed in OpenBSD between
your version and -current.

The imsg framework has moved to libutil so smtpd no longer ships it and is
trying to find an imsg.h that you don't have.

There are two solutions, the easiest one is for you to upgrade to -current
or to a snapshot; the other i'm not telling you because it will turn your
-stable into a bastard system that won't be supported here ;-)

I don't have access to any of the UBNT's we use right now, but any
mode except WDS seems not to be fully L2 transparent, hence it might
be incompatible with trunks and IPv6 doesn't work either. However,
WDS mode works just fine (tested on hundreds of devices, on network
with ca. 1300 users). Might help (doesn't do the stupid ARP proxying
crap).

As far as I know, this isn't doable yet.
smtpd lacks one of two things to be able to cooperate with an antivirus:

1- be able to hand over data to an external application during the
   transaction, which it cannot do yet.

2- be able to store incoming mails in a temporary queue where an
   external app can do the processing before it is added to the
   real queue.

I have ideas for 1- and 2-, but it's not trivial work so don't expect
to see it coming very soon. At least 2- requires making huge changes
to the queue which I'm not willing to make before some basic features
are fixed first.

significance of order of inclusion of header files

2010-10-06 Thread Edwin Eyan Moragas
Hi misc,

while compiling picolisp on openbsd, i encounter this warning:

gcc -c -O2 -m32 -pipe -falign-functions -fomit-frame-pointer
-fno-strict-aliasing -W -Wimplicit -Wreturn-type -Wunused -Wformat
-Wuninitialized -Wstrict-prototypes -D_GNU_SOURCE
-D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -D_OS='"OpenBSD"' net.c
net.c: In function `doHost':
net.c:116: warning: passing arg 2 of `inet_aton' from incompatible pointer type
net.c: In function `server':
net.c:130: warning: passing arg 2 of `inet_aton' from incompatible pointer type

the code in question is:

any doHost(any x) {
   struct in_addr in;
   struct hostent *p;

   x = evSym(cdr(x));
   {
  char nm[bufSize(x)];

  bufString(x, nm);
  if (inet_aton(nm, &in) && (p = gethostbyaddr((char*)&in,
sizeof(in), AF_INET)))
 return mkStr(p->h_name);
  return Nil;
   }
}

checking out the man pages for inet_aton(3), i didn't see anything
that would lead to the warning. so i tried to tweak the order of the
header files to reflect that of the man pages.

the diff to the source would look like:

e...@obsd $ diff -u net.c*
--- net.c   Thu Oct  7 01:05:22 2010
+++ net.c.orig  Thu Oct  7 01:02:58 2010
@@ -6,9 +6,9 @@

 #include
 #include
-#include
 #include
 #include
+#include

compiling the source after changing the order of includes didn't
produce the warning.

is this really supposed to happen?

cheers,

/e
