Wireless Network GUI
I want to make a small desktop application (probably GTK+, since I've never done anything in GTK) that shows available wireless networks, signal, and a few buttons to connect to each/configure each. I don't intend to make a huge daemon like the linux's NetworkManager, but, instead, just a simple application you open, connect, and close. Done. No bloat, and definitely ***NO*** requirement for stuff like HAL. I wanted to get a few pointers before I started: 1) First of all, I want to be sure no one's already working on something like this. 2) I initially considered just parsing the output of "ifconfig ". This does seem rather hackish, but would get the job done fast and can still be very maintainable code. However, what's the proper alternative (just a few pointer to know what to start reading will do) to do this sort of this. Thanks :-) -- Hugo Osvaldo Barrera

I'm pretty happy with my Asus Eee PC 1005PE. Wireless, graphics, sound, touchpad and keyboard all work perfectly fine. Bluetooth works acceptably, although I need to re-pair my mouse each time I boot. I dual-boot, so I'm not in OpenBSD all the time, but I'm pretty happy with it. Power management needs some help, but I haven't dug into that any further as of yet (fan runs constantly, acpitz overtemp until I disable the driver in the kernel, things like that). All in all, I've been happy with this netbook under OpenBSD. Benny -- "Because you have arms like noodles, while I am vigorous and burly." -- Hodgins, "Bones"

E.g., at least a dmesg from your working 4.7 install, and if you could transcribe at least the last few lines of dmesg output from booting install48.iso (e.g., did it panic or just hang?) that would go a long way.

Some mail bug must have happened. I ment that install48.iso's bad.rd stops booting after configuring storage devices on my ACER AO531h netbook. I'm currently running 4.7 with no issues on the same hardware. On Oct 6, 2010 11:58 PM, "Matthew Dempsky" wrote: On Wed, Oct 6, 2010 at 2:29 PM, Dmitrij D. Netbook for OpenBSD?
Hello, list! I'm a FreeBSD user (a very little experience with openbsd in the past), but i'm kind of interested in any bsd flavour (i like *nix, but dislike linux for some reasons). So, the question is if there is any positive experience with using OpenBSD on modern netbooks of the following: 1) Samsung N127 2) ASUS Eee PC 900AX 3) MSI U120-094 Or any other models with 10" monitor and 4+ battery lifetime? By positive i mean mainly correctly & stable working wireless. If nothing fits, please give me a recommendation which usb wireless card should i use. Thank you for your time, -- The way of the world is to praise dead saints and prosecute live ones. -- Nathaniel Howe With best regards, Krutov Mikle, Bercut ltd. Technical Support department
Re: Is there a method to boot from floopy after booting from CD?
Thanks everybady for answering my stupid question.Seems like the cause wasn't DVD drive.I'm afraid of that I said stupid things. I haven't found informations of somebady who installs OpenBSD on this VAIO.However I found some informations of installed Linux on this VAIO in some websites.there say instalation will stop without disable pci. Some of them also disable usb by the command below. linux ide2=0x180,0x386 pci=off linux ide0=ata66 ide1=ata66 ide2=0x180,0x386 nousb Does OpenBSD also have commands like these? > I would suggest trying a -current snapshot, it's quite possible that your > machine is supported better there. (Or wait for 4.8 release). There > were many changes in ACPI since 4.7 which may very well have fixed > things for this vaio. Thank you.I tried.Unless It shows the same problem... Maybe 4.8 is going to be much better??

No, I was not aware of that, but I am not the least bit surprised. I have not travelled to the US since '98. Post-9/11 and the PATRIOT act, I have no intention of returning to the US (I am a Canadian citizen) due to similar stories, but I didn't know about that "fun" fact. Everything since then hasn't "smelled right" to me. Believe it or not, I don't personally know anyone that has entered the US post-9/11. When I think about it, everyone I know has been on international flights that did not involve entering the US at all. Thanks again for the information. I've had a long suspicion that if I got to the border, I'd say "No" to something and would be denied entry, so I haven't even tried. I miss Hawaii, but apparently it doesn't miss me. ;)

I'm not trying to be a wise-acre here, I agree with Theo 100%. I doubt anyone wants to be screwed by customs (anywhere) due to licencing issues. I also don't doubt that customs would dig deep to find "dirt" if they really wanted to. My question is: Has it ever happened to anyone? Has anyone actually had a customs agent say "Wait a minute, you're using /foo/ OS. You can't be crossing our border." No flames please; I'm just curious. I realize the distinction here is between it not being possible (OpenBSD) and theoretically possible (FreeBSD).

I have several small projects housed at sourceforge.net that fall under a similar export restriction because they are housed there. Just using the arc4random() stuff (from OpenSSH) for linux requires one to report it to the US government because it uses crypto (OpenSSL) afaik. I believe the US government put pressure on sourceforge.net to adhere to export restrictions even if the developer is from outside of the US. Could it be that the same happened to FreeBSD and that's why the license change? regards, -peter

I have ideas for 1- and 2-, but it's not trivial work so don't expect to see it coming very soon. At least 2- requires making huge changes to the queue which I'm not willing to make before some basic features are fixed first. Gilles -- Gilles Chehade
