Address translation would break but you should still be able to get
into the machine.

This error occurred after upgrading the kernel and then rebooting.
After userland was brought up to date as well and the system rebooted
everything was fine. The system in question was local so outside of
being offline for the amount of time it took to build userland there
wasn't a lot to worry about. What I'm concerned with is this being an
issue on a remote system where not being able to get back in after
rebooting with just an updated kernel would (if it happened) be a
 serious issue.

I would *very strongly* recommend out of band management of some sort
for any important remote machine. Whether it's serial console, KVM/IP,
or a remote management card (one with dedicated nic; there are good
reasons why openbsd doesn't support the shared nic cards).

If you skip this, it's more important than usual to the same upgrade
path on the same type of machine locally first. There's usually no
problem, but sometimes you get unlucky with various code changes.

heimdal-1.4

2011-05-09 Thread Markus Peloquin
I am trying to update OpenBSD's Kerberos to Heimdal 1.4. I took a diff
between heimdal-0.7.2 and src/kerberosV/src, and manually applied those
changes to heimdal-1.4. I also updated the files in kerberosV/include/
and kerberosV/openbsd-vers/.

The next, possibly bigger, step is to update the Makefiles in the
OpenBSD build tree, but I don't understand the build system well enough.
It seems to involve translating Heimdal's Makefile.am's into OpenBSD
makefiles.

Here's a tarball with two patches (one for the small CVS changes I could
do, one for the heimdal-1.4 source) and a script `prepare.sh'. The
script uses the patch `heimdal-1.4-obsd.patch' and a
`heimdal-1.4.tar.gz' tarball to create something suitable to replace
kerberosV/src/ (it removes the same files removed when heimdal-0.7.2 was
merged into OpenBSD).
http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~markus/misc/heimdal-1.4-obsd.tar.gz

I guess I'm hoping somebody knows what to do with these Makefiles.

NO, it's not always safe to skip rebooting, not is it always safe to

I'm not really interested in the install, I can do that. I'm searching for

It's been running -current for quite some time (and the original

two, this time there were three weeks in between.

What problems?
Just use it like any other kind of drive.

Need a knob to fiddle? Try kern.bufcachepercent .
The effect will be more prominent with slow drives like sd-cards.

Squid on LAN

2011-05-09 Thread Alessandro Baggi
Hi list. I've a question about positioning a proxy server into the LAN.
I've tried this in dmz (also in transparent mode + rdr pf), and works
great, but now I'm trying to put this proxy in LAN.
Also in this case it works, but when I try to set it in transparent
mode, and put rdr rules on the firewall (OpenBSD 4.8):

match in on $int proto tcp from $int:network to any port 80 rdr-to
$proxy port 3128

it does not work, and the request seems not be redirected on the proxy.
I've ridden this:

http://www.openbsd.org/faq/pf/rdr.html

I'm trying to get solution only with pf rules without no results.
Could some point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance

you could reserve minimum amount for
 /usr/obj (2G or less consumed)
 /usr/xobj (1G or less consumed)

in your fs layout.

Then I do,
umount /usr/obj
mount_mfs MY_DEV_PARTITION /usr/obj

I know my /usr/obj becomes dummy and a waste of space, but I stick close
to default recommendations.

And then I run the userland or xenocara build, and reboot. I make sure no
obvious errors as this is not a cron job.

This is really to save the writes, but anyway I use hard disks. I am just
fiddling so wait for a more authorative opinion.

Thanks,
amit

If possible, put the proxy server on a different vlan.

If you can't, try the method in http://www.openbsd.org/faq/pf/rdr.html#rdrnat
It works, but your proxy logs will then only show the firewall's address
rather than the original client addresses.

This won't work for machines on the same subnet as the proxy.
In that case the return traffic (proxy-client) will bypass the
firewall so PF only sees half of the packets so state tracking
will break things. (It might initially appear to work but
try a larger download and watch for the connection breaking).

Plone 4 and OpenBSD 4.9

2011-05-09 Thread Vijay Sankar
Hi,

Is Plone 4.0.x incompatible with OpenBSD 4.9? I am able to install and
everything appears to work. However, when I try to do any site setup, Plone
restarts. I increased ulimit since that had solved it earlier on OpenBSD 4.7
but on 4.9, it just did not work. I tried both amd64 and i386 versions as well
as -current for both platforms.

Any clues/advice please let me know.

Thanks very much,

Vijay

This won't work for machines on the same subnet as the proxy.
In that case the return traffic (proxy-client) will bypass the
firewall so PF only sees half of the packets so state tracking
will break things. (It might initially appear to work but
try a larger download and watch for the connection breaking).

Looking into this further, the issue seems to be due to py-Imaging-1.1.7.
Plone requires py-Imaging-1.1.6. I tried to build a package but don't know
enough about Tk and other dependencies for py-Imaging.

Can this package be built into the standard ports tree so that Plone sites can
run on OpenBSD 4.9? If someone can give me a hand with this I can try to build
it also but I am not sure how to deal with errors such as

I posted it to misc for general archival.

When creating diskless systems that do not use pxeboot, I use mfs
mount points to construct userland in memory from a bsd.rd kernel.

I can do this with a modified rdroot with shadow paths and symlinks.

An alternate binary path with the default instbin will suffice while
replacing /sbin and /bin paths. Then, any setup media (hd, cd) can be
unmounted.

Anyone wanting to do the same will find this patch useful.

Creating release using site48.tgz

2011-05-09 Thread Stefan N
Hi All,

The OpenBSD version that I am using is 4.8 and the default source file is at
/usr/src

I was trying to make a new release using site48.tgz. I have plan to put
/etc/pf.conf, /etc/rc.firsttime and /etc/backup.sh inside site48.tgz

Below is my steps:

1.I need to prepare of /etc/rc.firsttime and /etc/pf.conf and /etc/backup.sh.
2.After that I compress and zip using tar and gzip:
tar -czf site48.tgz pf.conf rc.firsttime backup.sh

3.Once site48.tgz is done, I will copy it inside /usr/src and follow the
instruction to make release (http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq5.html#Release).

Are my steps correct?

Regards,
Stefan

Close, but install sets are created in /usr/release and extracted
relative to root so you need something more like this:

tar -czf /usr/release/site48.tgz etc/pf.conf etc/rc.firsttime etc/backup.sh

Although I would also recommend creating site49.tgz and installing 4.9.

you don't need to build your own release for this, just put the siteXX.tgz
file with the base*.tgz man*.tgz and other files from a normal release on
an ftp/http server / burned CD / etc.

 Regards,
 Stefan
