[mnemosyne-proj-users] Re: Renaming categories

2008-11-21 Thread Karen

Glad I looked at this email chain. I find all the discussions so
interesting and helpful. And we all have such varying computer
backgrounds. As I'm not at all sure how to edit default menus its
good we have several options to choose from. Thanks to Tony for
giving me a way to change categories that was easy for me to follow
and understand. I'm in the edit deck section frequently, and I had
been doing it card by card but followed his directions and wow - very
good!! Thanks again.
Karen

A good category interface would, I think looks something like this: it
would be a column of text fields, each containing the name of a
category. The text fields would be editable. So if I clicked on a
 field with 'Philosophy::Zen' and I del'd a ':', the entire
Philosophy::Zen category would be renamed Philosophy:Zen. If instead,
I removed the entire '::Zen', it would be merged with the 'Philosophy'
category. If I filled in a new field, a new empty category would be
 created. And so on.

Something like that is indeed what I planned for 2.x.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Peter

But you only need to do the 6 steps once because it then applies to
 all the cards.

Yes, but I also only need to edit a single line in default.mem because
then it applies to all the cards.

So on occasion I need to rename a category. There is no menu command
to do this, as far as I can tell, and it's absurd to go through every

website documentation cover this task - at least, the section on
organizing cards doesn't seem to, and I haven't seen it anywhere else.

I've been doing it by directly editing default.mem, but I understand
that editing it is considered to be ill-advised and risky. Am I
 mistaken ab

category? (Besides either editing default.mem or exporting, doing a
mass search-and-replace, and re-importing)
