2015-12-15 Thread BHAVESH PATEL
Hi Swarna,

I am making use of siri quite well enough, though not so much for
dictation. I do mostly use it for tasks like setting reminder, opening
apps, setting the timmer etc.
I notice the following edxceptions though with Siri:
1. It does not make calls in India.
2. It does not work with GPS.
3. it seams it does not work well with the default headset provided
with the phone.
Thanks,
Bhavesh.

Re: [Mobile.AI] Android Beginner; Which phone should I buy? (specific requirements present in the message body)

2014-10-08 Thread BHAVESH PATEL
Hi Bhavya,

I have used the Moto g 2nd gen phone my self, and find much better in
terms of accessibility, given that the phone has a stock android OS,
and will certainly receive the android L update. Also note that there
are unlabelled controls in certain apps of the phone, but they are
easy to deal with if you get a hang of those apps.
As far as hardware specs goes, it is better, as there is quod core
processor in the phone.
Thanks.

On 10/8/14, Bhavya shah bhavya.shah...@gmail.com wrote:
 Dear all.
I understand that this question keeps coming on these lists every now and
 then.
But I have give my specific requirements below:
Experience : I have practically no experience with phones after
becoming blind, neither Simbian, Android or I OS. However, I have
decided to purchase a phone running Android (Touch Screen) and please
do not suggest me not to try Android or to go for other OSs.
Keypad : I have no attachment to physical keypads in phones, but
wouldn't mind if a phone has it either, given that the phone is
powerful enough to meet my needs.
Accessibility : Phones with higher accessibility standards would be
nore welcome, however, according to my readings, inaccessible
features/apps of a phones can be easily replaced by third party apps.
S, I am willing to face some challenges here and there.
Looks: The phone should look visually stylish. It need not be the most
flashiest phone out there, but should be decent enough... to be
 carried around by a teenager.
Price: The price of the phone should be under
 Rs. 12,000
 Dollars 200
 Pounds 120
I wouldn't like to exceed this budget, unless absolutely necessary.
Brand Name: The brand name doesn't matter much to me, given that the
phone is great and the after sales service is acceptible. However, it
would be better, if phones from companies not so reputed are excluded.
However, be informed that I wouldn't skip phones that fulfill all of
the other criteria and don't fulfill this one.
Power: The phone should be powerful, and I seriously mean quite
powerful, powerful enoug to allow the usage given below...
Usage: I will play about a lot with my phone. Playing about includes
installing different apps, using standard chatting and social
networking programs, using blindness related apps like OCR apps,
colour identification apps etc., accessible games, and whatever
interesting I come across in the journey in the Android world.
Updates: Since, I like playing about with technology, I would be quite
eager to receive Android updates on my phone, especially Android L.
Findings: Now, let me share what knowledge I have,
Asus Zenfone 5 is a phone that fulfills almost all my needs... apart
from updates. I am wondering if the Zenfone 5 is going to receive the
Android L update or not. If most of you say that it is going to
receive Android L update, and share positive experiences with the
phone, I will go ahead and purchase it without second thoughts.
Moto G gen 2, doesn't seem better to Zenfone 5, but if you all insist
me on giving higher priority to Android updates, then I will skip
Zenfone 5 and go with Moto G gen 2
Ziaomi Redmi 1s: It is an excellent phone for its price, but I don't
want to purchase it because it is yet on JB while gen 2 Zenfone are
on Kit Kat. Even though the phone is excellent, the brand name is not
 yet too popular.
Android One phones: Neither of the ANdroid One phones stand up to the
Zenfone, and the brands are not very reputed. So, preferably, I want
to skip Android One... at least for now, since there is nothing great
yet. I can't wait much longer for better Android One releases.
Moto E: Again, doesn't stand up to the Zenfone 5, and I don't know if
it is going to get the Android L update.
Thats about it, about what I know.
Sorry for the real long mail and for my choosy attitude.
But please share your suggestions/recommendations, because I am
finally going to get my first Android phone!!!
 I would appreciate any assistance.

 Best Regards
 Bhavya Shah

Your second question first, yes you are right, there are 5 home
screens and in order to moove to next or privious screens, you need to
swipe right to left and vise versa with two fingures.

For dialing a phone number, you may like to use DW Dialer app. this
will allow you to tap twice while dialing a number and there are few
other options such as call prediction and so on.

On typing, I am comfortable of typing by lifting fingure, hence i am
not able to suggest you any other method as of now.

 Hope that helps.

[Mobile.AI] a great free alternative to recognise indian currency for iphone users

2014-03-26 Thread Bhavesh
hi Folks,

greetings for the day! i have come across an app called CamFind that recognises
objects with great accuracy, including indian currency. the best part is that
it recognises objects captured from any angle, which is good for blind users.
so go ahead and download it from the app store.

there is any way to know what the image is all about.

Re: [Mobile.AI] Lava handsets

2014-01-05 Thread BHAVESH PATEL
Hi sir,

As long as my experience goes, talkback is now intigrated in all the
phones that have JB update, as talkback now seams to be the intigral
part of the OS itself. the only thing you might have trouble is that
some phones do not have voice data installed that is required for the
TTS injen. you will then have to download and install it. I am using
Lava ires 504
Q, and it had talkback working out of the box.
Thanks.

it would be nice if we could use it.
Many android beginners want to and/or are able to invest small sums to

Any other handsets within price range of up to 8000, please?

2013-09-24 Thread BHAVESH
Hi accessindians,

Although it may be a dis advantage for many or some of us to use a
touch screen phones, there are some advantages as well. For instance
there were many apps we couldn't use tdue to in accessibility of the
apps on the symbian with screen readers. But look at the number of
apps we can use on the IOS or on the android. Right from performing
the basic tasks, such as call managements, up to using GPS, playing
games etc. Playing games, which was not at all possible on a symbian
phone, except for those, who had Mobile spealk. So it's up to every
individual; How does he/she takes the use of touch screen. it may be
of fun for some of us, as they might feel, that using a touch screen
phone is a revolution for the blind folks. Or some may take this as
total disappointment, as they can not take full advantage of each and
every function of their phone, dispight of paying so much money, like
a customer without disability pays. This is my thinking. Please do not
take it personal.
Thanks,

Subject: [Mobile.AI] Overview of Accessibility Features in iOS 7

The long wait is over. It's finally here: iOS 7, the latest and
radically redesigned version of Apple's mobile operating system.
Along with the redesigned interface, iOS 7 has a number of new and
updated accessibility features which I will outline here (with videos
to come soon). I will organize these according to the kinds of
 supports they provide.

The first thing you notice is that it is now easier to navigate to the
accessibility area in the Settings. In iOS 6, Accessibility was toward
the bottom of the General pane . In iOS 7, it is much closer to the
top of the pane, so that you don't have to scroll. A small change, but
one that hopefully will get more people to explore these settings and
to become aware of the powerful assistive technology that is built
into their devices. It will also aid with navigation for the people
who actually use features like VoiceOver and Switch Control.

 Visual Supports
a.. Large cursor for VoiceOver: you can now choose to have a larger,
thicker cursor when VoiceOver is enabled. This is great for me, as I
always had a difficult time seeing the old cursor's faint outline.
This option is found at the bottom of the VoiceOver pane.
b.. Enhanced voices and language support: The Language Rotor option
for VoiceOveer has been replaced with a Languages and Dialects pane
which provides a lot more flexibility. In this pane, you can specify a
default dialect for your language (U.S. English, Australian English,
etc.) and add languages to the rotor like you could in iOS 6. For each
dialect or language, you can now download enhanced versions of the
voices as well as separately control the speech rate.
c.. VoiceOver's option to use phonetics now has a few options (off,
character and phonetics, and phonetics only), whereas before you could
only turn the feature on and off.
d.. You can use a switch to disable the VoiceOver sound effects.
These are the sound cues that let you know when you are at the edge of
 the screen and so on.
e.. New options in the VoiceOver rotor: you can add the option for
turning sound effects on and off to the rotor, and there is a new
handwriting option for navigation. When this option is selected in the
rotor, you can use your finger to draw a letter on the screen and
VoiceOver will announce the number of apps with a matching name that
 starts with that letter.
f.. Enhanced braille support: VoiceOver now supports Nemeth Code for
equations, and there is an option for automatic braille translation
(supporting U.S., Unified and United Kingdom options).
g.. The Large Text option is now called Dynamic Type and it can work
with any app that supports the feature rather than the limited set of
built-in apps in previous versions of iOS. The size of the text is
controlled using a slider rather than by choosing from a list and a
live preview shows how the text will appear.
h.. Bold type and other visual appearance adjustments: overall, iOS
7's new design has less contrast than previous versions. However, in
addition to large type, there are a number of adjustments you can make
to the UI to make it easier to see items on the screen. You can make
text bold (requires a restart), increase the contrast when text
appears against certain backgrounds, remove the parallax motion
effect, and enable on/off labels (I'm guessing this feature is for
people who are color blind. The feature will add a small mark to
indicate when a control is in the on/off position, which would be
helpful because green is used quite a bit throughout the interface and
the changes in state could be difficult to perceive for those who are
 color blind to this color).
 Auditory Supports

[Mobile.AI] Overview of Accessibility Features in iOS 7

2013-09-18 Thread BHAVESH
happening, you can turn off the option for automatic updates in
Settings iTunes App Store Updates. The App Store also supports
the option for redeeming gift cards using the camera (a feature
already available on the Mac with iTunes). For individuals with low
vision, the redeem codes on iTunes gift cards can be difficult to
read, and this option to scan it with the camera makes the process of
redeeming gift cards much easier.

Of the new accessibility features, I am most excited about the
captioning styles and Switch Control. These two features build on
Apple's strong support for the blind community to extend accessibility
to even more people (especially so in the case of Switch Control and
its potential impact for people with motor and cognitive
disabilities). What are your thoughts? What are you most excited about
in iOS 7 with regard to accessibility?

When the Talkback is off, it does get mooved but with talkback on, it

Could it be that, some setting need be changed in phone or in talkback

Hi Dinesh,

I just purchased samsung galaxy s6012 music phone on wednesday. I am
pleased with it's performance. I am really not sure, whether the
android ICS has been customised on this phone, but i got all the
accessibility options in this phone, including for blindness, such as
talkback, touch by explorer by default. in addition, there are
accessibility options for other disabilities, like mobility, hearing
impaired etc. However one factor, which worries me, is that the volume
of the music is not satisfactory as per my point of view. the talkback
volume is very good, and can be heard in crouded places as well. i am
not sure whether you know, but keep in mind, that it is a fully touch
screen phone, except home, volume, and music buttons. it is good look
wise too. overall, I think it is a nice low budget phone. i am not
sure whether it will get JB update in future, but it is mentioned. If
you need more info before purchasing it, feel free to contact me. my

Yes they are, if you enable touch and explore option. one thing

Could you all share your views on this phone?
The new phone is going to be my first android phone.
i wanted to know if anyone has any idea if samsung has made any custom
modifications to the android 4.0 OS which could affect accessibility
 in this model?
Else please suggest the phone which will have stock android 4.0 OS.
 My budget is upto 12000.

 Thanks and Regards.

Re: [Mobile.AI] planning to perchase touch screen mobile phone

2013-01-07 Thread BHAVESH
If at this time i need to purchase, then for which model should i go
for?? what about soney? how much accessibility features does soney
phone offer? please suggest me a good model in the range of 10,000 it
doesn't matter whether it is a touch screen phone or not. however it
would be nice if that model can be upgraded to JB.

If you don't want a Dual SIM phone, then you can consider Galaxy Music
single SIM which is going to be released with JB. Or wait for a good phone.

I am also waiting for a nice phone with JB like above model.

I am planning to purchase the samsung galaxy duos s6012 music, which
has a future upgrade for JB. however, i want to know whether I really
will not be able to use this full touch screen phone at all as a
totally blind person on ICS temperarily? until JB roles out for this
 phone?.
 Thanks!

hello, if you strictly want a touch screen only phone, better wait for
the jelly bean phones which are starting to roll out gradually. much
depends on your budget also. there are few phones like samsung galaxy
s III and galaxy note 2 which have the jelly bean at present but both
 cost around 35k.
