Another really good section - We hypothesized that abnormal collecting behaviour, characterized by increased, indiscriminate acquisition behaviour and diminished discarding behaviour, would occur following damage to prefrontal regions, but not after damage elsewhere in the brain. We tested this hypothesis in a group of patients with and without involvement of the frontal lobe, the specific prediction being that damage to mesial prefrontal regions Abnormal collecting behaviour was defined as the gathering and storing of objects to such an extent that significant interference with normal daily activities resulted from the accumulated clutter or from the act of collecting itself. Five criteria were used to distinguish abnormal collecting from normal behaviour. (i) Extent: the extent of the accumulated items must be excessive relative to normal behaviour and the individual’s circumstances. (ii) Content: the collected items must include objects that are of little or no value. (iii) Interference with normal daily functioning: collecting must interfere with normal daily functioning, either due to the accumulated mass of items or from the act of collecting itself. (iv) Onset following brain injury: the collecting behaviour must have begun after focal damage to the brain. (v) Resistance to change: the collecting behaviour must be present for at least 1 year after onset and persist despite attempts by others to curtail the collecting. Thank you, Saul! This was one of my favorite parts: Thirteen subjects exhibited abnormal collecting, characterized by massive and disruptive accumulation of useless objects. In all cases, the abnormality of collecting behaviour was severe and persisted despite attempted interventions and obvious negative consequences. There were no differences between pathological collectors and non-collectors on tests of executive functions or anterograde memory. All subjects with pathological collecting behaviour had damage to the mesial frontal region (including the right polar sector and the anterior cingulate), but there was no damage to most of the subcortical structures that, in species such as rodents, are known to drive the acquisition and retention of objects. The evidence suggests that damage to the mesial frontal region disrupts a mechanism which normally modulates subcortically driven predispositions to acquire and collect, and adjusts these predispositions to environmental context. Director Peter Jackson, at work on his own remake of "King Kong," is
helping produce bonus materials for the DVD debut of the 1933
original.
Jackson is working on a new documentary, "RKO Production 601: The
Making of Kong, the Eighth Wonder of the World," a two-hour, seven-part
feature included in the two-disc "King Kong" set, which Warner Home Video
will release on Nov. 22.
"Fans of this film are going to go crazy; we've got everything but the
kitchen sink on here," said George Feltenstein, the studio's senior vp of
classic catalog.
One part of the documentary focuses on the mysterious "spider pit"
sequence deleted from the film before its theatrical premiere in New York
and Los Angeles.
"For years, there has always been speculation, does this footage exist,
so we have a piece that actually explains what it was and we do a
recreation of it," Feltenstein said. "For fans of the film, that's a big,
important thing."
In true Warner fashion, "King Kong" -- which has never before been
available on DVD -- will arrive in stores in two configurations: a
two-disc special edition and a two-disc collector's edition packaged in a
collectable tin and including a 20-page reproduction of the original
souvenir program, postcard reproductions of the original one sheets, and a
mail-in offer for a reproduction of a vintage 27-by-41-inch movie
poster.
"The real one is worth about $25,000," Feltenstein said. "These are all
reproductions, but they're still nice to have."
Warner also will release a four-disc collector's set featuring the
two-disc "King Kong" special edition along with "The Son of Kong" and
"Mighty Joe Young."
Feltenstein said the DVD of "King Kong" was two years in the making and
the fact that the DVD is arriving right before Jackson's remake opens in
theaters on Dec. 14 via Universal Pictures is "actually a
coincidence."
In addition to the seven-part documentary, the "King Kong" DVD set
includes such extras as a documentary on "Kong" director (and creator)
Merian C. Cooper, a trailer gallery of Cooper's other films, and a
commentary from stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen, actress Terry Moore
("Mighty Joe Young") and special effects master Ken Ralston ("Star
Wars").

Wow... I can't believe the "too cool for school" reaction some have had to this announcment. Me, I think the whole package sounds great. I've been a huge fan of KONG since birth (who hasn't?) and the timing on this couldn't be better. With Jackson's participation, they guarantee a large cross-over buy from his fans -- many of whom have probably never seen the originasl KONG, just the De Laurentis version from the '70s. They pretty much stopped showing the original on TV once the '70s version became available.
So, the original will get full restoration, tons of documentation and extras -- including commentary by Harryhausen, fer cryin' out loud -- and a whole new audience will be curious to see it because by then the publicity for the new Jackson version will be in full swing.
I'll be there with my $25 bucks the day it hits the stands.
