[MOPO] Shattered dreams

2006-03-24 Thread Doug Ball

I usually do not air my dirty laundry to MOPO, but
this is got to be one for the books.

I won two originalglass slides on ebay last
week and wasVERY EXCITED, that not only I won them, but what they
were.

One was an original release from Pinocchio and the
other was the 1940 re-release from Snow White the Seven
Dwarfs.

The selleris "ins3549", the winning amounts
were only 7.00 each and he charged 5.00 for shipping, which was almost twice the
amount stated in the auction. By the way I'm not complaining about these amounts
what so ever...only that not complaining about the shipping,I'd
hopedhe would show a little TLC for the glass slides.

The slides were put together in a white legal
letter size envelope with a very, very thin piece of gray cardboard and mail as
if he was sending a letter.
Needless to say both slides are totally
shattered!!!
I'm sure they went through a letter machine and
hard telling how many tons of mail went on top of this envelope!

Not only were these pieces rare some what
valuable, but irreplaceable!

I just want to
screamAHHH!

Good point. I sometimes think of my accumulation of over $1000 in
losses many of it due to UK Royal Mail and its sellers that use it.

Re: [MOPO] Shattered dreams

2006-03-24 Thread Ron
Gee, Ed, by that logic we shouldn't mourn the loss of any movie
memorabilia worth less than - what, $100?

Isn't the point of collecting this stuff to PRESERVE it?

BTW, many of my favorite pieces aren't worth $20 (and yes, I own some
worth $1000s).

Also, just cuz Doug paid less than $20 doesn't mean the pieces are worth
that. What if he got the deal of the century and they're priceless? How
would that loss make you feel?

Sorry to blow up but your post just really pushed my buttons!

Anyway, Doug, condolences for your loss - and ours!

[MOPO] Shipping Nightmare

2006-03-24 Thread Flixspix

Doug that sucks. For two pieces to have made it through
60 plus years only to have some nimrod feel the mail service was
handled by a butterfly's wings is just outrageous. I would neg
him.

Reminds me of my two disasters. First was paying a
fortune for a mint vinyl Jawa (Star Wars collectors know the small figure I am
referencing where an extremely limited amount were made with a vinyl cape in
lieu of wool which proved far more durable) and it was shipped with zero
packing simply stuck in a white business envelope. The other was a
guy shipped me the only known halfsheet style B from the original release of THE
WOMEN without taking it out of its metal frame and regular glass
plane. Heplaced halfsheet in a box with several inches to
spare on all sides with only one paper dinner napkin taped
overtwo-thirds of the glass and nothing else. Shattered glass simply
rocked back and forth across the three stars faces from Durham to LA. I
was so pissed off I shipped the broken glass back to him hoping he would cut
himself.

Re: [MOPO] Shattered dreams

2006-03-24 Thread JR

I think Doug's point was the totally unnecessary loss of irreplaceable and
fairly rare glass slides. I mean, the seller knew they were *glass* fer cryin'
out loud -- how dumb do you have to be to not pack them in sufficient padding
and a cardboard box, but instead just put them in a regular envelope and mail
them as if it was a regularletter?

That's tragic stupidity and qualifies as one for the record books, I think.
I certainly will never buy anything from "ins3549".

OK, now I normally don't let comments such as this get to me (or cause me to
reply to the group), but I was a little surprised at Ed's flip response to
Doug's heartbreaking situation.

Obviously Ed's idea of what constitutes one for the books is quite
different from Doug's. What I see are 2 pieces of Disney memorabilia that NO
LONGER EXIST due to an incompetent and uncaring eBay seller. To me that is
definitely one for the books and worth shedding a tear over.

I didn't realize that money paid is the only determination of importance.
Sorry Ed, you're wrong on this one.

2006-03-24 Thread Michael B

the amount is irrelevant. all transactions imply a reasonable, safe shipping method.

the snide, unfeelingcomment reminds me of the unscrupulous seller who misleads with false descriptionswho then says.."but i gave him a full refund"- BUT.the disappointment factor of the buyer (who waited a week in hoping to win, then another week until it arrives)is callously overlooked.

one should never do anything to cause DISAPPOINTMENT to a buyer.

2006-03-24 Thread Steven Yafet

Doug,

That's unspeakable! No reason for it and no reasoning took place in
the seller's mind, obviously. How did they ever believe the slides
would get to you undamaged! It's rotten and I really feel for you.
I've experienced some terrible packing jobs from sellers, including a
vintage record tossed into a huge, falling-apart box (the record came
in pieces) and an insert that someone didn't put in plastic but did
mail in a flattened out priority mailer (the ends of the insert stuck
fast in that really strong adhesive they use)

Really sorry that it happened to you and go ahead and scream if you
need to.
