Everything from details in the credit block to the smoke from the lit
cigarette clearly indicated bogus.Linen backer wasn't perpetrating a
fraud, just linen backing for a client, but he did say he wouldn't want to
mention this finding to this particular client.

I'd never want to to do business with that linen-backer again. By hiding
the fraud, he's perpetuating and extending it. In my opinion it's shameful
and unethical behavior.

Probably my first collision with a fake poster is from one of my all time
favorite films BLADERUNNER. It was being linenbacked by a well known
studio and I mentioned it didn't look authentic. With that I remembered I
had one in my car being shipped out. I went out, undid the packaging and
put my original against what I strongly felt was a bogus copy.

Boy I'll say.Everything from details in the credit block to the smoke
from the lit cigarette clearly indicated bogus.Linen backer wasn't
perpetrating a fraud, just linen backing for a client, but he did say he
wouldn't want to mention this finding to this particular client.

I just acquired one folded and three rolled BLADERUNNER onesheets from a
very respected dealer that I was thrilled to add to my inventory. I wasn't
present, but at the last Court's show one of these were used to confront a
seller present who was selling fakes. Denials and words were exchanged but
do not know much more at what went down.

My intention is to bring these out to coincide with the 5 disc ultimate DVD
BLADERUNNER collection (what! you haven't pre-ordered?) first week in
December. What kills me is I really need to get about $300 for each, but
the confusion and doubt surrounding these onesheets have kept the numbers
depressed. Possibly Ebay will not be the proper venue but one-on-one sales
to existing clients whose confidence I have earned.

On a completely unrelated topic, RATATOUILLE just came out on DVD. This
is one of the most gloriously beautiful PIXAR animated films and you owe it
to yourself to rent or purchase if its theatrical run passed you by. I
promise, you will be absolutely blown away. Save for 3:10 TO YUMA its my
favorite film of the year so far.

[MOPO] FA: Even More Rarities You May Have Missed at Heritage!

With all the attention being given to such high-profile pieces as the Style D
Bride of Frankenstein one sheet, the Scarface one sheet, the Dracula title card
and the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 40 x 60, it's easy to over look some
of the other great pieces in the upcoming Heritage Auction Galleries Vintage
Movie Poster
auctionhttp://movieposters.ha.com/common/auction/catalog.php?SaleNo=667ic=auctionhome_catalog.
Here are just a few I'd like to call to your attention:

One of the greatest futurists of the twentieth century was Herbert George
Wells. Best known for his science fiction novels, including The Invisible Man,
War of the Worlds, and The Time Machine, the majority of his works dealt with
the social, political and environmental changes that he saw as inevitable. He
wrote several books on this topic, including Anticipations, his first
bestseller, and Things to
Comehttp://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?hdnJumpToLot=1Sale_No=667Lot_No=28015,
which he adapted for the screen in 1936. Although Wells treatment was
unconventional and controversial, the film that resulted, directed by William
Cameron Menzies and starring Raymond Massey, Ralph Richardson, and Sir Cedric
Hardwicke, is an enduring masterpiece. From its intelligent, compelling script
to its glorious art deco designs, this movie is a treat for both eye and ear.
Paper from this early sci-fi epic has always been scarce, and all it takes is
one look at this beautiful one sheet to see why it's so highly desirable. Along
with the one sheet, you'll also find a title card
http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=667Lot_No=28016 and
six scene cards from the original release of this classic film.

Few characters in American history have been as colorful as William Buffalo
Bill Cody. The legendary Indian fighter and frontiersman became so popular and
well-known that he was able to parlay his fame into a traveling show that
toured from 1893 until about 1903. The gorgeous stone litho one sheet, Buffalo
Bill and San Juan
Hillhttp://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=667hdnJumpToLot=1Lot_No=28135,
in this auction is truly a sight to behold. Although there's absolutely no
evidence that Cody was anywhere near San Juan Hill during the legendary battle
in 1898, the poster, which pictures The Rough Riders Heroic Charge, is truly
a thing of beauty. Posters such as this, promoting Cody's stage show, are very
hard to find, and of interest not only to poster collectors, but to Western
fans as well. If you're a Buffalo Bill fan, you'll also wand to check out the
one sheet for Adventures of Buffalo
Billhttp://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=667Lot_No=28136,
the elusive Essanay poster from Cody's 1917 movie.

My all-time favorite movie, tops on my desert island list, has always been
The Adventures of Robin Hood
http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?hdnJumpToLot=1Sale_No=667Lot_No=28192
with Errol Flynn. For my money, this movie has everything: action, drama,
humor, romance, thrills, excitement, glorious Technicolor, a classic score by
Erich Wolfgang Korngold, a great cast, and more. No matter how many times I see
this film, it always remains as fresh as the first time and just as enjoyable.
I really like all the paper produced for this film, but the one sheet is
particularly iconic and striking, as it perfectly captures Flynn's roguish
charm and the swashbuckling nature of the picture. Many other actors have
attempted to portray Robin Hood, but no one has so perfectly epitomized the
English outlaw as Flynn. This poster, and the film it promotes, is a timeless
classic.

It's always fascinating to see foreign paper for American movies, especially
Swedish posters produced during the 1930s. They tend to be very strong
graphically, and extremely eyecatching. A perfect example is the Swedish one
sheet for The Last Days of Pompeii
http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?hdnJumpToLot=1Sale_No=667Lot_No=28204
in this current auction. You can practically feel the heat from the lava
radiating from this dazzling poster, rendered primarily in bright reds and
yellows. This is one of those posters that catches your eye when you first see
it and refuses to let go. Even if you've never had much of an interest in
foreign paper, you have to check this one out.

If trippy is your thing, take a look at the one sheet for the 1968 film, The
Acid
Eatershttp://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=667hdnJumpToLot=1Lot_No=28327.
This is the epitome of psychedelic, a real flashback to the groovy era of the
1960s. Produced by David Freidman, the man behind such cult classics as Two
Thousand Maniacs, Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS, and Blood Feast, this over-the-top

[MOPO] Advice to new movie poster collectors

2007-11-07 Thread Evan Zweifel
I've been thinking about my collection recently. Specifically, how
can I get more enjoyment out of my collection? Many of the pieces
have been hidden away in boxes for years and as I unfolded and
photographed the pieces, I was amazed to find that I remembered when,
where, and from whom (and for how much), I obtained them.

Not all of these memories were good -- some I overpaid given their
condition, some resulted from bad trades, and a few were bad decisions
when I needed to chose between two posters and just chose wrong.

So, I wanted to jot down some advice to new movie poster collectors.
And this is what I came up with -- 5 simple items (feel free to add your own):

1) Take the time to enjoy your collection. Stashing your collection
away in a box is unacceptable! Know what you have, and put it up
on the walls so that you can see it. You will quickly amass more
pieces that you can display -- so rotate regularly. If you find that
you have pieces that never get displayed, perhaps its time for them
   to find a new home!

2) Buy what you like. By this I mean, know what you want and more
importantly why you want it. Personally, I recommend buying
posters for movies you like, but even then only if the poster is
interesting graphically. The obvious corollary to this is, don't
by what you don't like -- this is equally important. If you don't
like 50s sci-fi don't buy it (there are plenty of people who do --
leave it for them). If you would never put it on the walls, you
   should probably just pass.

3) Learn about the material. Take the time to know what's available.
What are the standard sizes? What are the standard conditions? Buy
(and read) as many poster books as you afford. Visit a poster
dealer to see/touch a stack of posters. Know what kind flaws are
acceptable to you (and which are not). Learn how to grade posters.
Research foreign posters -- frequently their artwork is more
appealing. Chances are you can't afford to buy it all -- so you
will need to know what's the best piece for you to own for a
particular title. Know how to determine what a piece is worth --
know what price guides you trust.

4) Its about the hunt! Collecting is about collecting, not about
owning. You will remember how you came to own most of your
significant pieces -- so, take time to enjoy the hunt. Go to a
live poster auction. Go to poster convention. Hunt down local
collectors and see what they have (and want to get rid of). Go to
antique malls. Google movie poster, and visit every site on the
web! Stuff is out there, be patient, know when to make your move.

5) Remember that you are not alone. Meet and get to know other
collectors and dealers. You will find that you have a lot in
common with them (they love film, they lover posters, they love
telling you about the time they didn't by that mint copy of
Breakfast at Tiffany's from the fat man at the Denver Collector's
Fair for $125 in 1992). Go online and search out mailing lists and
chat groups, sign up, lurk in the shadows for a while then
   introduce yourself.

Thats it! Just 5 simple things to remember. Let me know how it works
out for you. And if you ever run into a 1930s Cary Grant 1-sheet in VG
or better for a reasonable price, give me a call.

Hey Evan,
What a wonderful post! I could relate to each part of your advice. Sometimes
I forget how fun it was searching for certain posters. I have been very
fortunate to have had very few bad experiences. I have made many wonderful
friends along the 34 year way! Most are kindred spirits who understand the
continued desire for some of these posters. Most of my close friends have never
understood it. Oh well, to each his own. You were right on in your post and it
is often the very same advice I give to new collectors that buy frames from me.
Educate yourself and buy what you like...

2007-11-07 Thread Richard Del Belso

And I like the part about making sure to LOOK AT your collection, and
displaying as much of it as possible. I try to do that...but sometimes it's
difficult so i just go through my boxes and take everything out and admire
it...sometimes all be myself, just for the fun of it.

Wonderful advice, Evan! Especially about
remembering to enjoy the hunt itself! I myself have been surprised over and
over
again both at what turns up and where it turns up...often when and where you
least expect it!

And sharing your latest finds with others who
really appreciate it is one of the best parts of the hobby. I've met (online
and
off) many great people who I wouldn't otherwise have had the good fortune of
knowing.

Thanks for posting.

Subject: [MOPO] Advice to new movie
  poster collectors

I've been thinking about my collection recently. Specifically,
  how
can I get more enjoyment out of my collection? Many of the
  pieces
have been hidden away in boxes for years and as I unfolded
  and
photographed the pieces, I was amazed to find that I remembered
  when,
where, and from whom (and for how much), I obtained them.

Not all of these memories were good -- some I overpaid given
  their
condition, some resulted from bad trades, and a few were bad
  decisions
when I needed to chose between two posters and just chose
  wrong.

So, I wanted to jot down some advice to new movie poster
  collectors.
And this is what I came up with -- 5 simple items (feel free to
  add your own):

  1) Take the time to enjoy your collection. Stashing your
  collection
away in a box is unacceptable! Know what you
  have, and put it up
on the walls so that you can see it.
  You will quickly amass more
pieces that you can display -- so
rotate regularly. If you find that
   you have pieces that
never get displayed, perhaps its time for them
   to find a new
  home!

  2) Buy what you like. By this I mean, know what you want and
  more
importantly why you want it. Personally, I
  recommend buying
posters for movies you like, but even then
  only if the poster is
   interesting graphically. The
obvious corollary to this is, don't
by what you don't like --
this is equally important. If you don't
   like 50s sci-fi
don't buy it (there are plenty of people who do --
   leave it
for them). If you would never put it on the walls, you

  should probably just pass.

  3) Learn about the material. Take the time to know what's
  available.
What are the standard sizes? What are the standard
  conditions? Buy
(and read) as many poster books as you
  afford. Visit a poster
dealer to see/touch a stack of
posters. Know what kind flaws are
   acceptable to you (and
which are not). Learn how to grade posters.
   Research
foreign posters -- frequently their artwork is more

appealing. Chances are you can't afford to buy it all -- so
  you
will need to know what's the best piece for you to own for
  a
particular title. Know how to determine what a piece
  is worth --
know what price guides you trust.

  4) Its about the hunt! Collecting is about collecting, not
  about
owning. You will remember how you came to own most
  of your
significant pieces -- so, take time to enjoy the
  hunt. Go to a
live poster auction. Go to poster
  convention. Hunt down local
   collectors and see what they
have (and want to get rid of). Go to
   antique
malls. Google movie poster, and visit every site on
  the
web! Stuff is out there, be patient, know when to make
  your move.

  5) Remember that you are not alone. Meet and get to know
  other
collectors and dealers. You will find that you
  have a lot in
common with them (they love film, they lover
  posters, they love
telling you about the time they didn't by
  that mint copy of
Breakfast at Tiffany's from the fat man at
  the Denver Collector's
Fair for $125 in 1992). Go online
and search out mailing lists and
chat groups, sign up, lurk in
the shadows for a while then
   introduce yourself.

Thats it! Just 5 simple things to remember. Let me know how it
  works
out for you. And if you ever run into a 1930s Cary Grant 1-sheet in
  VG
or better for a reasonable price, give me a call.
