[MOPO] Way off topic

2023-12-14 Thread Alan Heimann
Firstly wishing everyone a happy and healthy holiday season.. sometimes you
experience something and you feel compelled to share it with a chat group,
even though it’s not relevant to what we normally chat about… In this case,
I’m talking about an experience I had at a Target retail store.. This was
at their 42 nd st NYC location..you may have heard in the news that Target
among other retailers is experiencing a high incidence of store theft,
which they say is affecting their bottom line.. firstly, I went into the
store to buy some bar soap… I was surprised I had to get somebody to open a
locked cage to buy this… I could understand things like razor blade
cartridges which tend to be expensive, etc. but bar soap… OK then I asked
the fellow that opened the cage for me if there was a bathroom in the
store? He replied yes But it was closed now… Really why is there a plumbing
problem I asked him. no, he said the junkies go in there to shoot up after
4 o’clock so it’s not safe… OKkkk… I then proceeded to the self checkout
all the machines were being used, so I waited behind a person to watch this
person put about 10 items on the scanner and then put them in a bag without
paying for them. Not sure how that works, and then finally, as I was
proceeding to exit the store I noticed three New York City police officers
at the escalator, a teenager started to walk up the escalator with a pile
of stuff in a basket. One of the officers approached him, and said you got
to be kidding… The kid dumped all the stuff on the floor and ran up the
escalator and started cursing and flipping the bird to the officer… I
thought maybe the officer would radio or chase him, but just told him to
get out.. we all read a lot of stuff in the news, but living the moment is
a different experience

Re: [MOPO] Availability of cardboard frames for Glass Slides

2023-09-21 Thread Alan Heimann
Good suggestions from Tom ..with a little craft you could make the
cardboard borders for the slides on yr own..as to viewing of course a slide
box ..easy and cheap and many available..if you want to project on a screen
or wall then you need one of the somewhat antique projectors avail on eBay
in various states of disrepair..some of these use 500 watt bulbs and not
always avail ..best Alan

Re: [MOPO] Fake "King Kong" on eBay

2023-09-08 Thread Alan Heimann
Hey Greg.. this is a bit reminiscent of some thing I encountered recently…
over the many years that I’ve been collecting my wife, kind of runs, hot
and cold, more cold about me buying Posters… However, as I am now nearing
the end of what I want to collect she tries to be helpful… I don’t
participate in social media, Facebook, etc. but she does… The other day I
was telling her what things I’m looking forward to finish off the
collection… I guess she was receptive cause one of the things I mentioned
was I was looking for the Spanish one sheet for the red shoes so she said
let me try Facebook… And I said you’re wasting your time but she did and
somebody got back to her and said oh I have that so my wife, after all
these years is a bit savvy she says, can you tell me what the poster
measures, and what does it say on the bottom or sides of the poster and the
guy said it measures 27 x 40… My wife said well you have some sort of
reproduction that’s not the original Spanish poster and the guy got fairly
belligerent and said, what makes you think you know that it’s not an
original I assure you it is… Anyway, I encourage her not to respond further
… anyway hope all the mopoers had a healthy and happy Labor Day
weekend..best to all Alan

Re: [MOPO] What was the most grueling high rated movie you have watched?

2023-07-16 Thread Alan Heimann
I think I responded to a similar question sometime ago… The only movie I
ever walked out of was cries and whispers… I was 21 years old when I went
to see it and I remember squirming around in my seat and eventually left
the theater… I think if I had seen it Later in my life, I would have
appreciated it more… I can relate to something Greg mentioned in his post
about being in a movie theater with the AC breaking down… I went to see the
other side of midnight on a very very hot day once summer in a crappy run
down theater in the Bronx.. yes the AC failed.. you might remember one of
the lines that was repeated in the movie something like “ I’m the boy yr
the girl there’s the bed” well people were getting very hot, bothered and
impatient, and in a developing scene later in the movie somebody jumped up
from the audience and yelled” yeah, we know he’s the boy yr the girl
let’s get on with it already” hysterical.. finally changing a little bit
from grueling to gruesome which could be a whole other topic, one movie
that comes to mind is I spit on your grave..in my mind aka payback is a
bitch

Hi John..I think there is some interest in Monroe Wayne and 50’s sci fi

Re: [MOPO] Heritage fees

2023-06-17 Thread Alan Heimann
I think what Helmut is alluding to is what Grey calls an auction anomaly
..ie. A bidding war which may take a poster way beyond its performance in a
number of past auctions ..obviously these are the exceptions not the rules
..dealers should always be concerned with valuations with expectations for
a profit ..while you could compare posters to items you mentioned ..I need
a car I need a loaf of Bread etc I don’t need a poster…Seems there is
always something new down the line ..while posters maybe stagnating
original artwork seems to have found an audience ..comic book cover art ,
concept art for movies ,Mondo etc I’ve never followed props per se so can’t
comment..

Re: [MOPO] Heritage fees

2023-06-11 Thread Alan Heimann
Think Grey’s comment is spot on…and if yr a veteran seller and Rich would
be a good example , who prob has (as the examples he cited )constantly
sought after titles..Star Wars ,Casablanca etc
in his inventory which I would assume he obtained years ago or at a low
price , one can safely assume if you consign those to heritage or Bruce (
not much experience with propstore)yr going to make out well and very well
if the poster gets into a bidding war scenario … the sellers fees, though
obviously not small potatoes, are acceptable..

hi group..just watched the screen worn costume youtube vid..informative
fun and technically so well done with the integration of the movie
clips...while this is one area of movie/stage related collecting i have not
persued I appreciate it..I think most would agree one of the most iconic if
not the most iconic piece of movie costumery is the ivory colored dinner
jacket worn by Bogie in casablanca..I am at least reminded of it all the
time as a life size statue of Rick Blaine guards my movie room (see
below)..yes everyone comes to Ricks but not to my movie room..have a great
weekend y'all

[MOPO] Oscar reminisce and some fun things

2023-03-11 Thread Alan Heimann
For most of my life, teenage years and forward, I've watched the Oscars.
That's about 56 years worth.

During high school, I had a click of friends who were interested in
watching and discussing movies.

I went to a parochial school and while there was some money for the chess
club and the debate club,

Administration was not very pro the " movie club ". One of the things my
friends and I always tried to do

was watch the five movies nominated for best picture, debate their merits
and then watch the Oscars.

Actually watching the Oscars called for some sacrifice as they always
occurred during midterm exams

usually on a Sunday, ending late. There was always an exam on Monday.
Thinking back now there are highlights

we are all likely to remember. The slap, the streak, the refusals Brando
and Scott. I also remember a lively group

discussion about Hoffman in

Midnight Cowboy loss to Wayne in True Grit. The discussion centered if
Voight being nominated

for the same movie/ award might have been a factor. Love to hear any
remembrances from MoPo members they might

like to share. Fast forward recently, with there now being 10 nominees, I’m

I'm lucky if I've seen half of them. This year I've seen five; All Quiet,
Top Gun Maverick, EEAA0, Elvis and Tar

Would imagine most of us spend some time during the week thinking about
movies and movie posters.

Every time I walk into my kitchen I'm thinking Tarantino. If you're
wondering why that is please see the link.

I think you'll understand… I really should get out more.

Prompted by someones posts on MoPo's 28th birthday

string I really remember liking those "what's on your walls" . So I took
some pics of mine. In my former house

a lot of the wall space was dedicated to movie posters, currently only
about 10%. I had framed a large number of posters

and while that was pretty expensive, as my wall space is now diminished
it's nice being able to swap out posters

every couple of weeks. I have a number of figurines/statues on shelves
attached to the wall and I also took some

individual pictures of some of the ones that I really like. The pics will
be a little fuzzy but I’m sure the posters will be recognizable to you. The
link is from my website which hasn’t been updated for years but I keep it
going and use it for links.

Lastly, with a focus on posters, some of you might be familiar with a
couple of books written by Bill Givens called Film Flubs memorable movie
mistakes. He wrote two of them a few years apart. I had the first one, but
no longer do, however something caught my eye in the book and I
photographed it. Two posters issued for The Longest Day..the second one
I assume for a re-release..the studio kept the same poster substituting
the heads of the stars..think Wayne, Fonda and Mitchum..not sure of the
fourth..Anyone know of other examples?

2022-07-02 Thread Alan Heimann
talk about coincidences..if i remember correctly and am happy to be
corrected..VHS players were developed in the US but rapidly gave way to
production by asian companies
similar story for laser disc players..i do remember the magnovox players as
being the earliest out there and i'm not sure but i think the next
iteration for discs after discovision was RCA videodiscs
so coincidentally i visited my favorite vintage store in Greenport long
island yesterday and came across a bin having guess what..7 videodiscs i
photo'd the cover for East of Eden

Hi Alan ..I have quite a large collection Of laser disks… Many deluxe box
sets with various books and reproduction lobby cards… I do watch some of
them occasionally… I have found that some of the earliest ones in the
collection have undergone laser rot but most still play nicely.. as
concerns laser disc players the pioneer elite series was always considered
pretty much the best that was out there… To find one in pristine condition
with the remote is difficult these days and people still ask a lot of money
for those, relatively… although most people would agree that the laser
disks were an improvement over VHS tape somewhere very poorly produced and
not much better… It’s interesting that VHS tape in terms of collecting is
making a comeback and I’ve looked into that and although I have a large
collection of VHS tapes as well not the ones that collectors seem to be
after… I don’t think this is going to happen with laser disks but who
knows… Best Alan

Re: [MOPO] Aw: Re: [MOPO] Interesting.

2022-04-19 Thread Alan Heimann
This string is a great summary of where we’ve been, are and going ..no
mention though of NFT’s ..I mention that because one aspect of movie poster
collecting that was not mentioned is the space required for the avg person
to store or exhibit non- folded posters ..I would imagine by comparison
it’s easy to store comics, coins, stamps etc ..I believe this is an
influence in what and how much people buy ..sure you can find a space for
the Mona Lisa maybe not so for for Teenage Space Dudes ..personally I like
Grey’s philosophy and at the ripe old age of 68 I am starting to think
about the treasured pieces I will keep and the rest to be sold though I
thoroughly have enjoyed collecting them all ..participating in live
auctions and making friends along the way

I don’t think this was staged ..don’t think the academy that desperate for
attention ..there is a lot of woke but not unexpected as The academy
announced a few yrs ago they were going to address women and minority
inadequacies but Tangentially thinking about slaps/punches when I think
back to movies in the 30’s and 40’s some were more realistic than others ie
Cagney punches pretty good some of Bogies real poor ..any thoughts ?

A further thought.. The catalog describes this poster as being very rare…
maybe that should open up a discussion of what very rare is… I don’t think
this is a very rare poster… If you happen to have one that’s dated 1959
rather than 1960.. That might fall into the very rare category.

 Dear Collectors,
I am writing this to inform the poster hobby community that I have
amicably parted ways with Heritage Auctions after 21 years. During my
tenure there as Director of Vintage Posters, I was able to use my voice,
resources, and lifelong love of cinema to make the hobby of collecting
posters into a visible, exciting, and relevant business.

Additionally, I was able to build and maintain a network of wonderful
friends and affiliates who share my enthusiasm for this fabulous hobby.

After a period of much needed rest, I will be poised and eager to begin
opening new doors. I am looking forward to keeping my relationship with
 posters active, fresh and innovative.

[MOPO] Repost of NYD post RE: David K's. post

2022-01-02 Thread Alan Heimann
reposting out of string due to glitches in original post

Well folks it's New Year's Day and having read David K's Post it evoked a
lot of thoughts many nostalgic and some forward-looking and I'll share them
with Mopo..
Topic one beanie babies… yes my wife has quite a beanie baby collection...
They are cute and were relatively inexpensive, unless you bought a special
limited edition piece etc.
It was a good thing, you collect your beanie babies i'll collect my
posters and we're all happy. So the beanie baby fad ended and poster
collecting didn't
While the beanie baby collection was kept in a big box I started framing a
lot of posters and they were hanging everywhere. Eventually she complained
and as fate would have it it was the Saucermen poster that was the object
of her disdain. "why do I have to wake up in the morning looking at a
poster with spacemen
that have brussels sprouts for heads. OK so I swapped it out with a half
sheet from the rainmaker '56 (Beautiful portrait of Lancaster and Hepburn).
I wouldn't say problem solved but it went away for a while. Anyway getting
back to beanie babies I pulled out the box of beanie babies. Guess what my
favorite beanie baby is
it's Batty the bat what else would Bela love,

https://d2j6dbq0eux0bg.cloudfront.net/images/1377056/2833410768.jpg

Now there are web pages and books written about beanie babies and their
value. As with other collectibles a manufacturer error may lead to an
increase in value.
When you really get into this and you believe what you read there are so
many errors on these it's mind-boggling. So it's not just do you have a
beanie baby with an error it's
how many errors and of what type in a given piece that increases the
value. Getting back to batty with the common errors supposedly worth 42K..
Really? However if you happen to have one
with an extra leg then it's 90 K..hmm methinks I'm going to learn how to
sew

On to comic books. I never collected comics but I have some I remember
fondly a fellow in my high school class named David Retter. I guess you
might say he was an entrepreneur.
I went to a private religious Jewish school, Yeshiva, where we spent the
morning learning the Jewish holy books. Sometimes interesting, often
boring. One day David came to school with a bag full of comics
he rented the comics.. Two cents for each for the day. So I and others
rented them, placing them in between the pages of our oversized holy books
which could easily hide them.
When bored we try to read a few frames of course stopping when the rabbi
approached. Unfortunately if you were caught it wasn't a pretty sight. The
comic book was torn up for all to see,
and off to the principals office we went. We never squealed who was the
supplier of the comics. But you did have to pay David $.10 for a torn up
comic. My favorite comic series was the
Metal Men. Perfect for a guy who was interested in science and it had
gorgeous Tina (platinum) as one of the metal people (to be politically
correct) who was in love with her creator Dr. Magnus

https://d2j6dbq0eux0bg.cloudfront.net/images/1377056/2833327507.jpg

If you're not familiar with metal men and are interested I would refer you
to the Wikipedia article.

Who will be the superheroes of the future? The oath keepers? The proud
boys?. I sat and watched the riots/insurrection on TV as it was happening.
My thoughts ran back to my father a World War II veteran. He immigrated
from Germany in 1937. He was beyond the draft age but volunteered for the
draft.
If they agreed that he could go back and fight the Nazis. But ended up
being sent to India, part of the China Burma campaign. He was a field
butcher and they were needed
to provide food for the troops. He was stationed a few miles from the
Japanese lines. He had magnificent stories to tell. He went on safari with
English colonels as they enjoyed hunting
and wanted a Field butcher with them who could dress an animal in field..
Anyway one of the things I remember him telling me was that no matter how
bad things seem to be America is
and will always be the best country to live in. I remembered those words
while watching the insurrection and wondering what he might be thinking now
and thank God he never saw this.
A final word on the proud boys and the oath keepers, since they seem to
enjoy hitting people over the head with chairs and such, think they should
join the world wrestling federation
as what watching wrestling on TV seems to be about these days. Anyway to
quote Forrest "that's all I have to say about that"

The fate of movie poster collecting .. I have three sons the youngest did
show an interest I actually got him to read 3/4 of the way through LAMP but
he got married, lost his job due to Covid ,had a baby,
is doing handyman jobs and is squatting in my other house. Don't think he
has much time to think about movie posters these days though he took some
of my best posters to hang up on his walls er my walls. We drove to
Columbus one year
 as I

reflection a number of pieces that I have copies of were in the auction and
did very well..the auction results speak to the vibrancy of movie poster
collecting at the present time and hopefully this bodes well for the
future..wishing mopoers a happy and healthy holiday season.. PS HarryLime

2020-11-23 Thread Alan Heimann

valued below 10
