Subject: [MOPO] Is there a database of poster artists?

I have a coworker who had a relative named Tulio Martin that was based out of
New York who painted the artwork for some movie posters in the past and I am
trying to see if I can help him identify some of them. I know this is a long
shot since many artists don't get credit for their work but hoping I can find
some leads. Any advice on where to start with this project? Any help is
always appreciated.

anyone here uses an alternative for turbo lister she/he can recommend ? and

Dear Restorative Mopos -

I picked up a number of one sheets (and other stiffer paper pieces) that
were shrink wrapped using black foam core board backings.

Each of the posters has a spot or two of some very strong glue added on the
reverse to “tip” or affix them to the backing -

So, one sheets with a dot or two of strong glue at edges on foam core.

Most often, I have been able to lift paper from an old glue spot, but this
glue won’t let go - my guess it came from a frame shop, but not one aware of
collector’s issues.

Is there a way that I can lift this poster at these spots by using some
particular chemical or technique?

Or is this the domain of a specialist in paper restoration? - Which I am
not.

The posters are not very valuable - so an expensive technique or even pro
services might well be prohibitive.

Any thoughts on approach?

Thanks in advance for your time.

but my points are all the same points I would make for any company or person.
obviously, they see the need to raise the BP. I haven't asked why, but seeing

the increase from $14 to $19, and that's what I was seeking justification for.
Anyway, midnight here in UK and I'm off to bed. I think this particular topic

Those of you who don't like the BP can bid or not if you choose, HA isn't going

so what comment would he make?

they have a BP. It's not a hidden cost. When I buy something, my only concern
is getting it for a price I can deal with. Lately, because I'm largely winnowed
down to needing the expensive or rare items, I'm having to deal with bigger
prices and almost nothing I buy is under $100. in which case the bp means
nothing to me, especially as I account for it when I'm bidding, always. I have
a little paper chart next to the computer for the sig auctions so I can check
it easily

the first time I ever bid in a live auction, I was confused by the BP. This
would have been at a local auction to where I was living at the time. First
time I bid at Christies in the 1980s, they had a BP.

I've grown up paying BP..

if I don't want to pay the BP, I don't bid.

exactly what solution would you be expecting Grey to post for you?

Rich

Really? We know HA access this site as they promote their listings here, but he
is so busy making money that he simply ignores a forum of collector/dealers,
possibly some of his best clients, when his business model is being criticized,
and that's not corporate arrogance?

sorry Tommy, that is such a simplistic definition of the work involved in A)
listing material for sale.. and B) being in business

I wish it was as simple as snapping my fingers, but first you have to gather
(in HA's case) 500 posters

then you have to send them down to the photography dept

then they have to be individually catalogued

then the catalogued list needs to be converted or uploaded etc to the site

you have to promote the auctions

you have to answer the questions

then you have to have the orders pulled individually

you have to send them down to shipping

shipping has top package & post them

all that is just the A)

the B) is that you have to pay for your website, your rent, your lights.

you have to pay your employees, your software designer

you have to pay for all that advertising you do

I probably haven't even touched the surface

this is why I have fewer auctions, even when we work out the bug

Hi,

I have been contacted by someone looking to sell an uncatalogued collection as
follows:

upstate NY 1980 -2015 - 8 screens - 70% arthouse

10,000+ one sheets

2-3 copies on average
1/2 used -

100+ banners & bus shelters

maybe some stills

trailers - over 20,000 (5-6 each) - 1997 on

I have explained that the price will need to be low without more info but they
have asked me to see if there is a buyer willing to go buy it sight unseen or
go through it and strike a deal there.

Pls let me know if anyone has any interest.

thx,

Subject: [MOPO] 20 Years of MoPo!

Well we made it to 20 after all!

Today marks MoPo¹s 20th Anniversary. For the last couple of years, our
anniversary has been preceded by a discussion about how little we actually
discuss posters on this forum. This year it was John Reid¹s February 12th
post, ³How MoPo has Changed,² pointing out the lack of discussion or comment
on movie posters. In 2014, in time for our 19th birthday, Helmut posted an
analysis of MoPo posts (84% were either auction or for sale posts) and
former member Bruce H. mentioned how 2 other poster forums are pretty dead.
I find it just an interesting coincidence that this seems to happen just
about every February 24th! But no matterŠMoPo is still chugging along.

We¹ve survived longer than I ever dreamed (much longer than the majority of
Hollywood marriages). On February 24, 1995 the first official MoPo post was
distributed via American University¹s listserv. There were 11 members at the
start, and as is my annual custom, I recognize these MoPo pioneers: Mahtab
Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh Kai Shen, Evan
Zweifel, George Nichol, Cindy Nemeth-Johannes (we lost Cindy in 2008, but
her husband Jay is still a member), Jeff Static (AOL¹er Static555), Adam
Ehrlich and myself. In addition to Jay, Michael, Rob and Evan are still
members.

Last year I wondered whether MoPo would make it to 20, or if it even should.
Well, here we are and I guess we¹ll soldier onŠat least until American
University decides to shut down their listserv! I do hate to see longtime
members leave, (Poster seller Bruce Hershenson and the prolific Tom Martin
are 2 examples of people who exited this past year), but that¹s the way of
Internet forums.

Thanks to all of you for keeping this relic of the 20th century alive for
yet another year!

Thank you Peter :-)

As I said I don¹t get much time spare to post on MOPO but will try to get
more involved.

I would completely agree that many of the customers I have are male BUT I¹ve
seen a growing number of customers Œbuying to frame¹. This really for me has
brought in a completely new audience and therefore a highly percentage of
female buyers.

With my business I have a lot of customers who like to Œchat¹. I am assuming
this is in part due to the service I offer but also because it forms a huge
part of being a collector. Just being able to talk to someone else who
understands your passion.

Is this common with the male sellers as well? Do you have a lot of customers
phoning you for a chat prior to making a purchase?

Clare :-)

Subject: [MOPO] Attention MoPo dealers: YOU saved text view (at least for

Five days ago, I posted the following:

We are going to eliminate the text mode from our Auction History and
Auction Galleries unless we hear from enough people who use it!
 Our Auction History http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archive.html
and Auction Galleries http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/all.html have
contained 3 ways to view results (Grid, List, Text), and the first two
included images but the last one did not. Some of you have told us that you
are stuck in text view, and it occurs to us that we don't think anyone
uses that text view, so we are thinking of removing it. We are giving you
one week to tell us whether you want it kept or not
mailto:phil...@emovieposter.com?subject=My%20thoughts%20on%20keeping%20the%
20text%20view . If no one (or only a few people) tells us they want it to
stay, then we will soon remove the text view so that you will then only be
viewing Auction History results in a Grid layout or a List layout, BOTH with
images.

The only reason we ever had the text view was back from the day (years
ago) when we had our images in a separate database from our results, and
when we combined the two databases we kept the text view because a few
people were still on dial up modems and they could not handle pages with
lots of images. But that is ancient history now, so unless we find some
reason we missed, this text view will be gone in one week!

THANKS TO THE RESPONSES FROM MANY DEALERS RIGHT HERE ON MOPO, WE ARE GOING
TO KEEP THIS TEXT VIEW!

Of course, something could change down the line, but for now, you still have
text view, and, as always, YOU DON'T HAVE TO REGISTER ON OUR SITE OR SIGN
IN TO VIEW ANY OF THE ONE MILLION PLUS RESULTS (OR THE 933,00 PLUS IMAGES)!

So the next time you are thinking of posting and don't, remember back to
this time, where just a small number of dealers were able to make a big
difference, because they took the time to post!

Text mode is much better for this kind of searching.

I only need the images if I want to check out the specific style of a given

Mainly the info I am looking for is title, format, condition and price. The

So text mode is by far the best way to get these results for me

I REALLY wanted to go this year, but some personal issues (not poster
related!) came up and I just can't do it. :(

I sure hope I can next year! I used to go every year and I always found it
worthwhile, and the best part was getting to put faces to people I knew
well through emails or phone calls. And Morrie Everett is about the second
nicest person I have ever met (his wife, Diana. is even nicer).

Did you know that we are strongly considering have our Tuesday and Thursday
 auctions end one hour earlier?
Why? Because they currently end at 7 PM CST, which is extremely late for
our European customers, and ending one hour earlier would mean they don't
have to stay up into the middle of the night to bid as they close! But it
would mean that the auctions end starting at 4 PM PST instead of 5 PM PST,
and 7 PM EST instead of 8 PM EST, which might be better or worse for our East
 Coast and West Coast bidders.

So we are making our Face/Off over the weekend a choice for our bidders as
to whether they prefer to leave the ending times exactly where they are, or
to have them change to one hour earlier. Go to our homepage,
 http://www.emovieposter.com http://www.emovieposter.com/ , and vote in the
Face/Off before Monday at 12 PM CST, and let us know YOUR preference!

Fellow members of our Marvelous Gaggle of Geeks:
I have been selling ...or trying to sell, in some cases...various items on
Ebay. I've raised a bit of money, and, to be frank, I was going to put it
towards a 3D television (a cheap one, buthey, I became addicted to 3D when
i saw HOUSE OF WAX back in the late Fifties.) Well...I believe it was Woody
Allen who said , Want to make God laugh? Tell Him your plans. I knew that
this would probably be my mother-in-law's last Christmas. She has colon cancer,
and is refusing all treatment: no chemo, no radiation, nothing except an
occasional Vicodin. I'm 88, she told me at Thanksgiving, and I want to go
out with some quality of life and my family with me. We we were prepared for
that, but now it turns out that the healthiest, most ass-kicking person i know,
my sister-in-law Jan, has Stage Four lung cancer. She is responding well to
some amazing alternative therapy (it's called I.P.T. ;it's chemo that doesn't
make you sick or lose your hair. They are working on BUILDING her i!

looks much better. I love her so much and her bravery inspires me every day. My
wife is being such a trooper...
I have a bit of money in my Ebay account: not a lot, but I know my
sister-in-law could use it. (She just retired from 30 years as a dispatcher at
the Sheriff's office in Truckee.) That stupid TV can wait.
I didn't write this letter to try to get you guys to bid on my stuff:
I've done enough of that this last couple of weeks. (FA; FA; FA, ad
infinitum...) I just wanted to vent some of my shame at being such a greedy,
materialistic dick while people I love and who have been so kind to me are
dying or very sick.
AND!I also want to thank some of the MOPO members who tried to
help me sell my beloved S2 Karloff MUMMY stone litho recreation. Your notes to
the group were small but heartwarmingly selfless acts that made me proud to be
a part of you. Toochisyou are a gem. (Toochis wrote to me saying she would
bow out of the sale as she thought I could get more for the poster than her
final bid price. that was still during the I wanna-gimme my 3d TV plan. (I
shoulda gone for your priginal offer, Toochis, butwhat was i saying about
being a greedy, materialistic dick? You ladies and gentleman, supposedly my
'competition, tried to help me sell my item. I have met Tom Martin...who is as
delightful as you would expectbut I have not met any of the rest of you and
yet i consider you dear friends. Thank you for cheering me up during a
difficult time. This is what Christmas is truly about. I hope to do so someday.
My household bills were taken care of for the next coup!
le of months by a surprise royalty check, so i can do something nice for my
wife's little sister.
Sosigh... I'll still be listing stuff, including that goddamned MUMMY
poster, but with a much larger heart and the feeling that i have people who
care about me out there, You're a good bunch of geeks. Love and Merry Christmas
to you all, Greg Douglass PS-Lest I get the reputation of being TOO warm
fuzzy, after a bit of research into the life of Charles Dickens I understand
that Tiny Tim f**ked his leg up playing chicken with a horse-driven carriage
after drinking a combination of mead, opium, and goat urine. You'd think
Scrooge would be able to see through THAT scam!!! Well, we all make mistakes.
You guys made this holiday a special one in significant, tiny ways for this
collector.. Now light a fire and drink some egg-nog.
Love to one all,
Greg Douglass

[MOPO] Intuit Small Business Big Game

2013-08-06 Thread Jim
The Cinderella story at this year's Big Game will take place during a
commercial break. Why? Because Intuit is giving one small business a TV
commercial on the 2014 Big Game.

It's the world's biggest stage, and a lucky small business could be on it
right beside some of the biggest brands.

I just voted for my favorite business. Click here to vote for them, too!

Looking for the original one sheet for (ahem) Tracy Lords in NEW WAVE
HOOKERS from 1985.
This would be the 27 x41 one sheet from the distributor Dark Brothers.
Doesn't have to be perfect.
If it displays minor evidence of handling and even light staining that is
fine..which I just realized
sounds somewhat twisted in this regard. But you get my drift.

Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Subject: [MOPO] MOVIEPOSTERBID ANNOUNCEMENT.. New Auctions Schedule, New
Site... New Stuff!!

Hello Folks.

we're making some changes at MoviePosterBid starting this week and I wanted
to let everyone know what is going on at MoviePosterBid.com

First of all, we're going to go to a 14-day auction format.
We're just 3 people over here, and 2 of us don't even work full time!
Anna, whom all my bidders know, only works 4 days a week. Valerie, who
assists Anna most of the time only work a few hours 3 days a week (or less
as she is a college student). The result of that is I work all the time, I'm
always down at my office/warehouse and I don't get to enjoy the wonders of
Las Vegas, which is kind of antithetical to living here. So I'm trying to
cut my work down by some measure.

However, though we are going to 14-day auctions, that does not mean we are
only having 26 auctions. We will have 40-45 auctions this year and the
remaining auctions will be 14 days. The big difference is that of the number
of auction, most of them will overlap the previous auction for 7 days. The
auction that begins tomorrow of Belgian posters, Weds the 6th of February
will be the first 14-day auction and it will end on Feb 20th. Next Weds (the
13th) we will upload the following auction (bulk lots, and miscellaneous
items that do not fit into our other auctions) will end on Feb 27th.

At the same time, I recognize that during 2012, we got a bit off-track and
started selling considerably more lower quality items than we had the
previous years, and we will be reducing the amount of lower quality
material, in part because we need to up the game
somewhat, but also because as we will be doing a few less weekly auctions,
we'll be selling 4000 fewer items each year, which will be included as bulk
lots every 10 weeks rather than single item listings.

This also means I will have more time to deal with comic book items,
original comic art, Big Little Books and other comics-related collectibles,
of which I have hundreds and hundreds of boxes full.
I've already started listing comics material on my companion site
www.comicbidz.com for those of you who are comic fans.

I hope that our new format will please all current members as well as future
members to my auction sites and you will be one of them

Also, before I forget.. We are designing a new website right now!
The MPB site hasn't had an upgrade since 2007 and it's time to move on to a
new platform. It will take a few months (at least) to create the new site
and as we get closer to finality, we'll be asking for suggestions on site
additions. We'll keep you informed.

Meanwhile, if you have any comments on our new auction format, please email
me and I'll be happy to read them

thanks
Rich

Got a procedural question here.

How can some listings get posted with pix and others get bumped back because
of pix attachments?

Just tried a few times and couldn't get a photo attached to get through the
system.

Yet am seeing some folks postings with pix.

I always suspected most of these 'reality' shows to be scripted but knew for
sure when I rewatched an older episode of Pawn Stars. A guy came in and
sold PS an old coke machine that had been in the family. The Pawn Stars guy
took the coke machine to Ricks Restorations to have fully restored. If you
watch the Ricks Restorations show now you will see the guy that brought the
machine in was actually Ricks brother. So Ricks brother sells a coke
machine which is then brought to Rick to be restored. Making business for
his older brother works for me.

An email we just received:

Hello! I have been asked by the television show Pawn Stars to sell my
Steve McQueen Bullit posters and lobby cards to Rick on an episode. Rick is
a HUGE Steve McQueen fan and even had a 68 mustang made to exactly match the
movie car. The kicker is they don't really want to negotiate like on tv.
They want me to tell them how much I'd sell them for before I get there and
act like it is a negotiation.

Would you be willing to give me a estimated value you think they are worth?

The posters are folded but I'd say excellent shape using your standards
listed on your website. The lobby cards are also in excellent shape or
better.

I have two of the posters and 3 lobby cards.

I have attached pictures.

I would really appreciate it.

He attached photos of a beat up Bullitt insert and 3 misc. 8x10 stills.

Natalie Wood had plenty of everything except a Spanish accent. Definitely

Please indulge an off topic post. You might think that this
is simply another story about a wounded vet. It is. But it
also about the precious nature and difficulty of independence. What is it,
and what
should it mean to all of us? I have a 96 year old father, and he is now
totally
dependent upon his caregivers, my sister and her husband and myself. I
don't
usually tear up over the New York Times, but I did this morning.

You should take the time to read this. If it doesn't break your heart,
and then lift it, you probably don't have one.

Re: [MOPO] Slabbed Lobby Cards at Heritage

Steve

Therein lies the problem! They guarantee their certification and that the card
is original but will they refund your purchase price if it is proved a fraud? I
think not the fine print somewhere says that they will cover the cost of
certification. Also (and jus being a devils advocate here) the only way to
discover that it’s a fraud is to BREAK it out of the capsule, and by doing so
you nullify the certification. Until proven otherwise it’s a lose lose
operation.

I see your point, but I would never do this because it is deceptive. If the
slabbers can sell the hobby on their idea, so be it.

But I doubt they will do much convincing of long time collectors. They likely
will get a bunch of comic book and baseball card people involved. people who
have a love of investing rather than a love of lobby cards, and that's their
right.

By the way, is it not painfully obvious that my two main questions have been
completely avoided? Maybe I wrote too many words in asking the questions, so I
will shorten them!

1) Exactly who is doing the grading, and what is their prior experience grading
lobby cards?

2) Exactly who owns the grading company (percentages, if it is owned by several
people)?

The strategy for the anti-slabbers is obvious: Starting NOW, before slabbing
gets a foothold, you need to advertise your lobby cards as “NEVER SLABBED!,”
implying that that’s a good thing, and that never having been slabbed is a
virtue. Like “original miles” on a classic car meaning it hasn’t been rebuilt,
or “unrestored” implying “never been screwed up by someone who didn’t know what
they were doing.” If enough reputable dealers start crowing NOW that their
lobbies have NEVER BEEN SLABBED, then, even without your saying exactly WHY
that’s a good thing, you’ll sow suspicion in the minds of consumers (especially
those new to the hobby) about the practice of slabbing. And by saying “Never
slabbed” rather than “not slabbed,” you’d be suggesting that any lobby that has
EVER been slabbed has been permanently sullied, thereby actually REDUCING the
value of slabbed lobies. Marketing 101.

[MOPO] Inv Man Lobby card set

2010-06-19 Thread JIM GRESHAM

Is there anyone alive who actually still knows what an Inv Man lobby
card set looks like? the pressbook only has 4 cards in it. On page
124 of children of the Night is the title card 4 cards. there are
three missing cards. what I am wondering is if there is anyone alive
who knows what is missing? On the top of page 127 is a possible card,
based upon the pressbook, which we fabricated. However, I dont know if
it actually existed. Ken Schacter says he thinks there is another
silhouette. any idea who may know what cards are missing? wouldnt it
be a shame if we have lost that information forever?

We are delighted that our gallery was chosen to display The Gems of the
Silent Screen Revisited exhibit, says owner and silent movie buff Jim
Episale. While major museums have displayed silent movie posters, gallery
showings are quite unique. We have been fortunate to house a number of
diverse poster exhibits. We are pleased to add this exhibit to our
repertoire.

Is it my imagination or are many movie poster discussion group members
REALLY testy as of late? Not just here, but on that one those who mainly
collect newer posters frequent, allposterforum, so it covers all types of
collectors.

And what accounts for it?

The Great Recession?

The Implosion of eBay?

The summer heat?

Or what?
