Apart from the one of KONG that has been discussed on other boards, I was also
offered one of these for TOP HAT a few years ago with a similarly absurd asking
price.
When I questioned the date originality and asked for more information, I got a
stonewall.

It's a poster printed for the library circuit. I had about a dozen of these
at one time, all different titles, but including the CK. From the 1950s, they
came from a theater owner who sold me a few thousand posters, and he told me
what these were. Back in the 50s, they would provide films for the schools and
libraries to show to the kids during summer. These posters were provided to
help publicize the library showings.

  hope this helps.

Re: [MOPO] CITIZEN KANE On Ebay. Antiques Roadshow the Verified Appraiser?

2007-03-18 Thread Bruce Hershenson
Something got jumbled here. I did not say these ARE military posters, merely
that they are similar (in printing and paper stock) to military posters. Given
that they are a different size, and do not have the notation that is at the
bottom of every military poster (either Litho in USA or Printed in USA) I
would say they are most likely not military posters (although, since they were
obviously done for classic films years after the fact, I guess it is possible).

I feel 100% certain that they are NOT from the original years of release. Given
that they are folded twice and would fit easily into a record, the idea
occurred to me that they might have been a giveaway stuck into classic
soundtrack albums, but I have nothing to support that. I had not heard Rich's
comment about these being made for library showings in the 1950s, but that
certainly seems quite possible.

This is just one more item to add to the Antiques Roadshow blooper reel of
mis-identified and wildly over-estimated items (there could be at least a 24
hour show of these gems!).

I'm not sure why we are all still guessing at this.
Is there some reason to doubt Jon Warren's word (it was Jon not Rich, who
identified these Bruce) as being no good now?
He bought them directly from a theater owner who told Jon how they were
used.
Sounds like the end of the story right there.

Well, I don't think anyone is saying that Jon's word is dubious. His
explanation is perfectly plausible, probably correct. But persons'
memories,
Jon's included, mine included, as well as the guy who explained the
origin of these

Re: [MOPO] CITIZEN KANE On Ebay. Antiques Roadshow the Verified Appraiser?

2007-03-18 Thread Bob Brooks

My 2 cents...

I'm with Jon on these. They look like the posters you would get from those
secondary distributors that distributed 16mm prints (which is probably where
the library story comes from). I would be surprised if they were from the
first release (likely at least a year or two afterwards at least). They
don't look like military posters to me at all (other than the size). But, I
wouldn't have been surprised to see one of these hanging up at a college or
university theatre several decades ago...

Cheers,

Bob

[MOPO] CITIZEN KANE On Ebay. Antiques Roadshow the Verified Appraiser?

2007-03-15 Thread Flixspix
I am sure many of you guys have seen the 10 grand listing on Ebay for the
Citizen Kane poster. I of course being Mr. nice guy tried to point out the
error of their listing. I made mention that at the time of the film's roll
out,
a small printed version of the onesheet was made available during the
initial engagements for inserting into big city newspapers, not all that
different
from a herald. I made mention I have seen several on Ebay, and in fact had
one put on linen for a client and that they sell for $150 -$200 I also
pointed out that no dimensions of the poster is posted anywhere in the listing
to
confirm definitely the value of this piece I got this reply:

this is not a reprint. yes the reprints are in full color to help sell them.
this has faded over the years. there was only 1200 made and I have one. this
was shown on the antique road show several months ago with my client and
they verified it is authentic. value 10K - 20K at auction sorry your limited
to
a very small amount of information on this item. if it does not sell we will
be sending this to NY for auction

I replied in a second email saying I never mentioned that this was a
reprint. I also again requested the measurements of the poster to positively
identify. But Antiques Road Show is the verified appraiser of this poster?
Good
grief I doubt seriously they would make such an error

I will get the correct size later today. thanks for your input and your

2007-03-15 Thread Richard Halegua Comic Art
Freeman, I have one of these.. it is an original poster.. Original
what is the question

some think it is a military style poster
others think it is a wilding poster from the 50's
someone told me it was from the pressbook, but Dan Strebin said he
had 9 mint pressbooks over time never saw this poster
it is fairly common however in that I have seen it at least 10 times
in the last 4 years

I also had someone at Ray's show bring me 5 different titles - all
40's titles - in the same format had a CK in the batch. I could
have bought them for $150 total. But they were mounted on something

it is some kind of real theatrical poster.. what kind.. no one really knows

the poster is definitely NOT a video release poster

Re: [MOPO] CITIZEN KANE On Ebay. Antiques Roadshow the Verified Appraiser?

2007-03-15 Thread Sue

Hi Guys:

This is Sue from LAMP http://www.learnaboutmovieposters.com. I didn't
get the initial email on this thread so I'm winging it here. But from
what I have gathered from some of the emails, I'd like to throw out
another possibility.

There were several companies that were licensed non-theatrical film
distributors. They would distribute feature length films to colleges,
trains, cruise lines, hospitals, etc. From what we have been able to
gather, they would issue posters that looked like smaller versions of
the one sheet. One of these came up on discussion about a year ago but
I don't remember the title. Ed's looking to see if he can locate his
notes. One of the most well known of these distributors is Swank, who
has been around since 1937 and is still in business. On their website,
they claim:

 Studios We Represent

We represent Walt Disney Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, Touchstone
Pictures, Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Warner Bros.,
Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Paramount Classics,
DreamWorks Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, United Artists, Miramax
Films, Focus Features, Lions Gate Films, IFC Films, First Look
Pictures, ThinkFilm, Paramount Vantage, Picturehouse, HBO, Magnolia,
Newmarket Films, The Weinstein Company and more, and offer all of
their box office hits to the non-theatrical markets (markets outside
   theaters) where we are licensed.

Here's their website. http://www.swank.com/Index.html
