Re: [MOPO] Mystery email about alleged destruction of memorabilia.
I use to get emails many years ago from someone claiming to be from the International Film Archives. Below is an example. Two (2) films in the works, at International Film Archives [IFA], are CIRCUS WORLD and THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD. First: Circus World: If you are familiar with the MGM soundtrack LP recording, or the reel to reel of the same, the LP was pressed wrong sided (Side One should be Side Two and Side Two should be Side One). As for the Cinerama film Overture as premiered in 1964 reserved seat locations and debuted on LD (LaserDisc) - the Overture is not the choral Circus World theme. The Overture is found on the LP and reel to reel as "In Good Old Vienna". The mix is the same with the expection of the first segment being in two-channel stereo and the pickup of the harps coming in at 6-channel stereo to finish the composition. During this section, the house lights are slowly dimmed, the Cinerama log is projected with a quick circus version of the Trapese Waltz, both fade and the wind effect begins the main credits. On the Entr'acte opening for Act Two, the choral Circus World theme is used. On the Epilogue [Exit Music] the full 6-channel harp to finish of "In Old Vienna" is used. Now that's the changes to the correct Roadshow cut. Unfortunately, with rushed for delivery to playdate time, the labs jumped the choral theme for all of the three (3) above positions. Second: The Greatest Story Ever Told In the works for presentation on DVD, according to the April 1964 initial premiere cut, the full "Meditations - Jesus of Nazareth" opening prologue and not the "Come Unto Me" overlay mix to "Jesus of Nazareth"," the Newman score to the "Resurrection of Lazarus" sequence, the "Via Delorosa" (Road of Sorrows [Carrying of the Cross]) and the "Resurrection and Ascension." This eliminates the recomposed "The Robe-Crucifixion" music (wonderful as it is), the traditional Handel "Halleujah Chorus" (beautiful as it is) for the Resurrection sequences, and the appropriately sorrow laden "Requiem" of Verdi, from the washing of hands by Pontius Pilate and voice over of the "Credo (Suffered Under Pontius Pilate)." Roland, It is well noted, specifically in the Main Titles, that THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, is not an entertainment, but a series of unfolding personal meditations, the richness of the human heart (George Stevens intention) and, thus (if you could not read the video transfer titles), they are hereby presented for you: PROGRAMME PROLOGUE MEDITATIONS JESUS OF NAZARETH ACT I THE PROPHECY A VOICE IN THE WILDERNESS COME UNTO ME THE GREAT JOURNEY A TIME OF WONDERS INTERMISSION ACT II A NEW COMMANDMENT THE HOUR HAS COME THE TRIUMPH OF THE SPIRIT In addition (the extras on DVD): the documents (in full) for East and West Coast premieres (you have the covers on these posted), the full souvenir program, 176 8x10 b/w stills issued by United Artists, complete production and costume sketches, the three folder 11x14 color scenes available at theatre (totalling 36). the Saturday Evening Post (October 19, 1963) article and pictures, the Life magazine (March 27, 1964) presentation and pics, the Arizona Highways (January 1965) article and photos, the reviews sheet issued by United Artists (you have posted these), the 16mm 15 February 1965 premiere footage (you can see me in that - smiles), the full run of New York Times advertisments from October 1964 to February 1965, the neve"The Greatest Story Ever Told" under the master film director George Stevens!" the standard Ultra Panavison edition, the 141 minute version, the HBO presentation (Judas Iscariot suicide) of December 1980, the initial CBS/Fox video "error" release of April 1964 (not corrected until 1990 VHS), & the isolated music soundtrack, including unreleased music tracks cataloged USX-5120 (United Artists Music) mastered at 250 copies. So there is the scope of the project to be presented in a deluxe box edition that is white engraved vellum and depicting the initial Roadshow image. Attached for your website: The 70mm/6-channel extract of the Main Title from CIRCUS WORLD (the special print archived for Cinema Centre on June 24, 1964. The actual Main Title from THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD as it was exhibited (note the scroll background) not the orange over saturation on the VHS/DVD Special Editions of 2001. In closing, Yes, I know if have yet send out the CinemaScope tracks as promised. In addition, be safe and continue your reality on Cinerama exhibitions. Love what you do very much.
