I'm also a reading specialist in NY. We use the state ELA test and the MAP test. According to what we've been told the students are compared to students on their level so as long as growth is shown that is equivalent to other students there is not a problem. My district gave up reading classes about 4 years ago. Biggest mistake they ever made. Our scores went down drastically which now has the district in a tizzy. The kids are missing reading strategy instruction as well as reading workshop. The idea was to have Lit Coaches incorporate reading into the content areas. This did not work the way it was planned. I wouldn't be surprised to see a return to some kind of formalized instruction after the next round of low scores. Two years ago our district decided to eliminate reading in grade 6 of our middle school. They made one period a day for Language Arts (39 minutes) and instituted one literacy coach per grade to help the content teachers do more reading strategy work with the students. At the same time they decided not to put many students into the AIS (remedial classes). It has not been a good situation. The classrom teachers are overwhelmed with kids who have difficulties and are not getting any services. The 3 literacy coaches are not very connected to the classroom. At the same time there is a feeling on the part of the classroom teachers that it's not fair that they are responsible for 90+ students and the literacy coaches not responsible for any. Due to the lack of AIS services for many students our 8th grade state test scores are dropping and of course the administration who made this mess can't figure out why. [MOSAIC] Very Disabled Readers
I am currently teaching reading to students in grades 6 and 8 in small group classes with children who are severely disabled in reading. I am working on the strategies with them and have started with them hearing their inner voice as they read. We are having difficulty with this even with me modeling and doing read alouds with them practicing. How would you approach reading with students like this? [MOSAIC] Reading INtervention program for middle school
I will be teaching greds 6 and 8 AIS next year. AIS is a response to intervention program for kids who have scored a low 2 on our state's assessment the previous year. I've taught these same courses this year and I have found the kids have very poor vocabulary, fluency issues and their comprehension is terrible. The 8th graders really concern me as they are one year from moving into a highly rigorous high school program. If you were to teach these classes what are some things you would do? My district used the MAP test for the first time this year. I can't say I was impressed by it. The test is completed on the computer so many of the reading strategies the kids are taught goes right out the window when they can't highlight or make margin notes on the test. Supposedly the test does not allow the kids to randomly guess at answers, it will shut down if they start randomly guessing. We had students do this and the test never shut down on them. I just received my schedule for the next school year. I will have three 8th grade AIS (academic intervention services) classes. These students are the lowest regular ed readers in the building. Class size will be kept small. These kids will be missing some of the more fun classes (technology, art etc) to take this reading course. [MOSAIC] ELA time being cut at my school
Recently our new middle school schedule was unveiled for next year and it is cutting ELA time in the whole school but especially in our 6th grade. Currently our 6th graders have two periods of ELA so that we can adequately cover both reading and writing. Next year we will have one period a day, 39 minutes in length and each class will get an additional 39 minutes once every 6 days. All of us who teach ELA are shocked by this. This is being done mainly so that the students can take a foreign language every day versus every other like we currently have. I teach in NY in a district in Westchester County where education is valued by most parents. Any suggestions how to get the word out to parents and get them to complain about this. This is so unfair to the students. I'm not sure how the teachers who will be teaching this are going to be able to cover both reading and writing in this short time amount.
