[mou-net] Brewer's Blackbird a mistake
A pair of Rusty Blackbirds in bright sun under my feeders this morning lead me to believe I was mistaken in my idenification yesterday of a Brewer's Blackbird. It's ironic that while we require a photograph to confirm rare bird sightings, had I submitted the best of yesterday's photos a lively debate may have ensued. I believe the conclusion would have been possible- not confirmed. Fortunately the presence of the Rustys today in much better light leaves me certain that the blackbird yesterday was most likely a Rusty as well. Re: [mou-net] Threats against birders in Sax-Zim Bog
Hi Birders: I've been to the bog many times, know the area, and have seen this residence, but not lately. Can anyone say how much frontage this person has on the road? When are you safe to stop nearby? It may also be nice for those who have been there recently to write some landmarks to watch for (coming from each direction) while birding this immediate area, so people know when they are getting close and can coast on by. On the other hand, unless there is a staked-out boreal chickadee or the like, this land is just like ALL the rest of the bog, so there should BE NO reason to need to stop and aggravate this person... Re: [mou-net] Threats against birders in Sax-Zim Bog
Holly: Has anyone contacted the guy's family or the Veteran's Administration to get him the help that he needs? In addition to being a menace to anyone, let alone birders, who happens to drive along the road in front of his property, the guy is a menace to himself. One of these day when that fellow does his confronting he may run into a non-birder or birder who may fight back and result in one or both people getting hurt. Other than birders not travelling on Stickney Rd, the simplest solution seems for folks who get threatened to file a complaint with the St. Louis County Sheriff's Department. Perhaps people who have had run-ins with the guy should go to http://www.stlouiscountymn.gov/GOVERNMENT/DepartmentsAgencies/Sheriff.aspx to express their concerns. If they do so, they should be as polite and courteous as possible when expressing their complaints or concerns about the guy. Hope this helps. Re: [mou-net] Threats against birders in Sax-Zim Bog
I agree with Mr. Hawkins. Placating this fellow will not make him go away, and sooner or later, he will hurt some unsuspecting passer-by, or himself. This man's actions are dangerous and often illegal. The remedy is to report every single incident to the law enforcement, and to follow up by pressing charges where appropriate. A restraining order might be effective too, but I'm not familiar with applicable state law. It might be worthwhile to contact the man's family, but I suspect that he's long since broken ties with any family members. Contacting the Veteran's Administration might be fruitful, too, but only if he decides to cooperate with them. This man's activities ought not to be tolerated. It's not fair to the community at large, and it's especially not fair to the inevitable innocent person he hurts someday.Responsibility lies with law enforcement, but they need the community's help in reporting, in prosecuting, and, if necessary, in testifying in court. Simply avoiding public roads near this man's home gives him carte blanche to continue his reign of terror. Peter Dullea P.O.
