[mou-net] Summary: Anna's Hummingbird, Dakota Co. Eureka Twp. Left Nov 15

2023-11-17 Thread Elizabeth Tiller (Beth)
The immature Anna’s Hummingbird that so many of you shared at my place left on
Nov 15 in the morning. I saw the bird “get up” from its garden roost and take a
sip of the garden feeder as always at 6:48. Around 7:30 I went out to check a
favorite perch. He was there. I was poised to take yet another photo when he
flew up to the new heated feeder on the deck rail, took a brief sip and then
took off high in the sky to the east.

It was, as you may recall, an utterly calm day and warm. For most of the day I
thought he was hunting insects as he had been doing for the past few warm days.
But he never showed again. I watched until dark. He was on his way someplace
new. Probably a good choice if he shifted south.

Here is the summary of visitors:

ANHU was here 17 days. On day 1 (Oct 30) only I saw him. The same was true of
day 17 (Nov 15). On all other days, many others had a chance.

320 people visiting!! Total visits counting repeat visits was 343.
Youngest was 17 months who did actually see the hummer according to her mama.
The oldest would have to self reveal!
Farthest was Grand Forks ND. Other long distancers were Grand Marais MN, Long
Prairie MN, Crosby MN, and Dubuque IA
Earliest was before the bird got up in the morning! I waited until I saw the
hummer and then walked out to the road to invite him in.

Quite the party. It was wonderful to meet so many like-minded people. Thanks
for coming.

2018-07-22 Thread Elizabeth Tiller (Beth)
On a private bog/fen pond east of Ely (east of Winton) (Lake County) for a week
at a cabin off the grid. Heard Boreal Owls calling (winnowing) every evening,
much of the night and often in the morning as well for 7 days. Sounded like
several individuals based on locations. At least 2, maybe more. Wondered if
this could be independent young keeping contact with parents. Never could find
one visually in spite of all the calling and all my looking. Calling from the
west side that was thick with black spruce. White pines by the cabin.

yellow-rumped, palm, and yellow.

At Forestville, equally bleak for birds (although the wildflowers were
stunning). We saw a female rose-breasted grosbeak and heard a northern
waterthrush and an ovenbird, Otherwise, the same: one palm, yellow rumps, a few
yellows on territory.

I believe Laura Coble and I saw the same Red-necked Phalarope reported by

of the NW body of water, the largest pool. It was swimming in
characteristic circles. Periodically,it would move behind the point of
grasses on the east side, probably feeding in shallower waters nearer
shore, but would then return to mid-lake. At first we had thought to ID a
Wilson's, but scope views, with field-guide checks, suggested Red-necked.
The only shorebirds we found at Jirik/Braun sod farms were Kildeer.

south of Co Rd. 8, Scott County, near intersection of Mushtown Rd. that leads
to Prior Lake). As the sun came up they began to disperse in various directions
on both mornings.

They were NOT present this morning (June 18).

Was this a breeding colony that was disrupted and displaced from somewhere
else? Or does someone have another idea for why so many egrets and so
temporarily?

Anyone else see this assemblage?

[mou-net] Blur-gray Gnatcatchers

2015-05-03 Thread Elizabeth Tiller
Several blue-gray gnatcatchers on the very northeast bay of Hay Lake, Eagan,
Dakota county (immediately west of Rt. 3/Roberts Trail). Treat of the morning!
Gnatcatchers always make one smile (well, me at least).

[mou-net] Whitetail Woods, Dakota County

2015-04-12 Thread Elizabeth Tiller
Whitetail Woods County Park.

Nothing earthshattering but a lovely little flock of ruby-crowned and
golden-crowned kinglets in the woods by EMpire Lake (about a dozen). One Ruby
singing even!
A trumpeter swan on the lake and a Great Egret.
A few yellow-rumps here and there and a phoebe.

Swung out to 180th Marsh. About 25 Rusty Blackbirds hunkered down in a shrub
out of the wind. Yesterday (April 11) one male yellow-headed Blackbird. The
coots and the shovelers were crowded together feeding in choppy waves and
fighting and fighting! (coot v. coot and shoveler v. shoveler). So that was fun
to watch! I thought maybe the waves kept smacking them together.

It's underway... (signed: a Michigander (Yooper) transplanted to the urban
landscape...)
