[mou-net] Birds in China
My experience with birds in China about 16 years ago contrasts with those of Mark Alt. I participated in a university faculty exchange between UW-LaCrosse, where I taught, and Nanning Teachers' College in the Guangxi Autonomous Region of SW China, not far from Viet Nam. My wife I lived among the Chinese for 9 months in 1990-91. With no automobile, I bicycled around the countryside near Nanning. Birds of any kind were scarce. I did see a species of kite circling around one of the stone cliffs which stand above the plains of this region. In a street market in Nanning, when some species of laughing-thrush showed up, street boys set upon it with slingshots, and it was dead within minutes. My countryside excursions and a boat trip on the scenic Li River produced few birds. The fields and rice patties any thickets (there were few) were devoid of birdlife birdsong. The city was birdless. In the street marketplaces, caged thrushes some mockingbird type birds of various kinds were for sale, presumably for human enjoyment. Perhaps this Chinese culture economics has changed in recent years. I doubt it. Returning to LaCrosse, I was grateful for the many birds accessible merely by driving some back roads far near LaCrosse in three states, even major highways. However, I think that accessibility is diminishing. Fence to fence tilling, chemicals, and suburban sprawl have reduced many bird populations, at least in my experience. I am unsure of hardwood timber harvest in SE Minnesota, SW Wisconsin, NE Iowa, but I don't think Cerulean Warblers get a lot of attention or respect in our economic system. Fred Lesher LaCrosse, Wis. To: min bird mnbird at lists.mnbird.net Date: Friday, November 14, 2008, 5:23 PM Tomorrow, Nov.15, The USFWS is sponsoring an open house at the viewing area south of Brownsville from 10AM-2PM. Hot cider will be offered. Check this viewing area out. It is 100 feet from the Miss. R and about 100 feet of paved parking lot facing the River. It includes an interpretive kiosk with brochures, a safety rail, and two securely mounted spotting scopes. Parking for a bus about 20 automobiles. Today, there were 12,000-15,000 Tundra Swans whooping it up, standing on the sandbars, swimming, flying overhead. My tally of Bald Eagles was down to 60+/- from 150+/- a few days ago. There is a good variety of puddle ducks, including a high number of Northern Pintails, and the usual flocks of Canada Geese. The dredged sandbars draw some of the the swans, geese eagles within a few hundred yards. This is an impressive effort by the federal government to work a joint project by the USFWS USACOE. I presume MNDOT was also involved. Further south on Pool 9 of the Miss. R. there is also an impressive gathering of waterfowl in Allamakee Co., Iowa viewed from Red Oak Rd. off Co. Rd. I have tried to count a stream of blackbirds flying in to roost guestimate around 120,000 +, or enough birds to pass overhead for 30 minutes in an unbroken string of birds. Good idea not to gaze upward with an open mouth as they pass.) The USFWS MNDOT have constructed a viewing/parking area complete with two spotting scopes a couple miles south of Brownsville on Hwy 26. Check it out! The Corps of Engineers has dredged in several barrier islands created flowing side channels cattail marsh as well as beaches. Directly in front of this new area, Bald Eagles stand around awaiting an unwary Coot or wounded duck, and others soar overhead. The near dredged island is about 100 yards from shore, and the entire project is about a mile long. The Tundra Swans are further out, and strung out up down the River for several miles. The other viewing area is an older small wooden deck another 2 miles or so south of the new area described above. This deck has also been built by MNDOT the USFWS. [mou] Lansing Loop Scouting Report
I scouted the west, Minn./Ia., side of the Loop today. There is very little open water along the Mississippi River on either the Minn. or Wis. sides of the River. At New Albin, Iowa at Poole Slough, there were 9 Sandhill Cranes cranking out their wild calls. There are migrant Bald Eagles standing around on the ice, and at least one active nest. The only concentration of waterfowl was at Heytman's Station, a remote area off Hwy X52 in Allamakee Co., Iowa, between Lansing Harper's Ferry, Iowa. Here were several thousand waterfowl of 13 species, including Canvasbacks Redhead ducks. They are quite distant (600-800 yards), binoc identifiable, but best enjoyed with a scope. The usual Ring-billed Gulls have returned, mostly below the dams. Unfortunately, Loop participants arriving at the Dresbach Information Center for the 9AM meeting time will have to drive past the Center toward LaCrescent, turn around at the Kwik Trip in LaCrescent, and drive north under I90 to make a right turn into the Center. In other words, there is no east/southbound entrance from I90 into the Center. Fred Lesher LaCrosse, Wis. Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! [mou] Names Locations Citations
To All: When offering a bird sighting, please cite a local community, county, nearest major highway down to county township roads, and the state. In some cases, even town, range section. As a subscriber to four birdnets, two in Minnesota one each in Wisconsin Iowa, I am sometimes lost without some basic map details. There are literally 10,000s at least of locations possible, and we all deserve convenient helpful locations cited. Remember, local some state locations may be familiar to you your birding friends, but not to relative strangers newcomers to the list to birding. Also, there is more than one Lost Lake, and I don't know how many Round Lakes even in one state, let alone four states. Thanks to everyone. Fred Lesher LaCrosse, Wis. Turn right at the only stop sign in the park scan the treetops west(southwest?) of the wetland. At the Dairyland Power Plant along Hwy 35 south of Genoa, two Peregrines were perched at the nestbox on the southmost stack this noon, March 7. The Lansing Loop, a six hour auto tour along the Misssissippi River in Wis., Minn., Iowa is March 17. Bald Eagle nests will be visible, Peregrines may be viewed at several locations along the route, plus those likely to nest on the USBANK building in downtown LaCrosse. [mou] USFWS Aerial Survey Waterfowl Counts, Nov. 14/15
As best I can read the spread sheets across multiple screens, there were on these dates 33,710 Tundra Swans on Pools 4-13 of the Upper Miss. R. Refuge. The largest concentration, 18,300 on Pool 8, was mostly in Wis., but some in Minn. next to the riverbank. On Pool 7(Wis.) were 7000. On Pool 9(Iowa) were 2600. Pool 8 is a fine sight to see sound to hear. Dozens of Bald Eagles, including kettles of 12 to 15 above the bluffs. 1,000s of Ring-n. Ducks on Pool 8 in Wis. Maybe a few stray into Minn. [mou] 8000+/- Tundra Swans, 117 Bald Eagles,Pool 8, Miss. R.,Houston Co.
Subject birds viewed from the new viewing deck/pull-off area at Mile Marker 11, Hwy 26 south of Brownsville. This facility is under construction. The plastic orange fence means DO NOT DRIVE ON THE AREA UNDER CONSTRUCTION. YOU WILL GET STUCK! There is room to get off the pavement onto the shoulder. Some swans are within 100yards of the area. Do not get out of your car, slam the door, rattle your tripod, and march across the area. At least that's my advice. You may scare off the closest swans. These swans are stretched out for two miles mid-river. Some are packed so tightly they form a snowbank of white. Watch for those other big white birds: Am. White Pelicans, Am. Egrets, Snow Geese. The latter least likely. Trumpeter Swans have been sighted south of Pool 8 along Hwy 26 on the ponds near Reno. Not today. The 117 Bald Eagles (BAEA) are by actual count. Most perched on snags like Halloween characters, draped like dark shrouds on brooms. Mostly immature birds. I presume this concentration of eagles is because waterfowl are a source of food. Over many years watching, I have witnessed two BAEA kill waterfowl, as recently as last week. This note makes no mention of the 10,000s+ other waterfowl seeking refuge currently on the River. Now is the time to see and hear swans along the Mississippi R. Hearing them howl wail is an invitation to get out and dwell among them. This spectacle brought to you most noticeably by the USFWS and Migratory Bird Stamps. Owned by no one everyone. Fred Lesher LaCrosse, Wis. Access over 1 million songs - Yahoo!
